A case in point: When John Crusius, a research chemist at the United States Geological Survey, published an academic paper on natural solutions to climate change in April, his government affiliation never appeared on it. It couldn’t.
Publication of his study, after a month’s delay, was conditioned by his employer on Dr. Crusius not associating his research with the federal government.
“There is no doubt in my mind that my paper was denied government approval because it had to do with efforts to mitigate climate change,” Dr. Crusius said, making clear he also was speaking in his personal capacity because the agency required him to so. “If I were a seismologist and had written an analogous paper about reducing seismic risk, I’m sure the paper would have sailed through.”

An inspector general’s report at the Environmental Protection Agency made public in May found that almost 400 employees surveyed in 2018 believed a manager had interfered with or suppressed the release of scientific information, but they never reported the violations. A separate Union of Concerned Scientists survey in 2018 of more than 63,000 federal employees across 16 agencies identified the E.P.A. and Department of Interior as having the least trustworthy leadership in matters of scientific integrity.
Findings published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS ONE in April on a subset of those agencies found that 631 workers agreed or strongly agreed that they had been asked to omit the phrase “climate change” from their work. In the same paper, 703 employees said they avoided working on climate change or using the phrase.
“They’re doing it because they’re scared,” said Maria Caffrey, a former geography specialist at the National Park Service who battled managers as they tried to delete humanity’s role in climate change from a recent report on sea-level rise. “These are all people who went to the March for Science rallies, but then they got into the office on Monday and completely rolled over.”
Examples are plentiful, not all of them new. But increasingly, scientists are willing to speak out.
On April 24, 2017, Noah Diffenbaugh, a climate scientist at Stanford University, published a study showing the links between extreme weather events and climate change. Since the research was funded in part by Obama-era Energy Department grants that included more than $1.3 million for Dr. Diffenbaugh’s project, he credited the agency in the paper’s acknowledgments.
On April 25, emails show, the researchers were told that acknowledgment of Energy Department support would require additional review.
“It was alarming to receive this email because it was so far outside of our normal practice as a scientific community,” Dr. Diffenbaugh said.
Full disclosure of funding, he noted, is required by most scientific journals and by the university.
The emails said managers in the Energy Department’s biological and environmental research program, known as B.E.R., felt their program was “under attack internally” and were worried about certain terms, including “extreme event attribution,” which refers to how much a given weather event can be linked to global warming.
They also worried about references in Dr. Diffenbaugh’s research paper to terms like the Clean Power Plan, an Obama-era regulation on coal-fired power plants; the social cost of carbon, a principle that puts a price on climate-warming carbon dioxide emissions; and the Paris Agreement on climate change.
Citing those three subject areas, a research supervisor wrote to Dr. Diffenbaugh six days after his study was published, “Was trying not to put too much of this in writing, but the concern here is avoiding the impression that B.E.R. is supporting research directly focused on policy evaluation.”

A subsequent paper examined how meeting the Paris Agreement’s carbon reduction targets would affect extreme weather events. When Dr. Diffenbaugh submitted it for approval, he was told Energy Department officials felt it was “solid on the science” but contained “red flag words” like Paris Agreement, emails show.
His choice was to either remove those phrases and acknowledge the agency funding, or keep them and not mention the grant.
Dr. Diffenbaugh and Stanford decided that the research should not be changed and would be published with the so-called red-flag words and the disclosure of funding sources. Department officials later notified the project leaders that funding would be cut in half. Dr. Diffenbaugh’s project was zeroed out.
Jess Szymanski, a spokeswoman for the Department of Energy, said in a statement: “There is no Department of Energy policy banning the mention of ‘climate change’ or ‘Paris Agreement,’ nor is there department guidance to withhold funding for projects including this language. To allege so is false.”
Then there is the case of Marcy Rockman. Until she resigned from the Park Service in November 2018, Dr. Rockman served for seven years as a climate change adaptation coordinator; five of those years were spent developing a strategy to protect cultural resources from climate change. But when the strategy was issued in late January 2017, her supervisors decided to drop plans to send copies to each national park.
“There was no appetite for any of my management chain to write a memo that would have their signature on it that said, ‘I am distributing the climate change strategy,’” she said.
The European Association of Archaeologists took notice anyway and invited Dr. Rockman to present her work in the Netherlands. Her boss approved the trip, and then retired.
But several months later, Dr. Rockman said, she was informed that she needed to reapply for approval. Her supervisors suggested she play down climate change. Then the trip was denied.
“I was responsible for making and carrying out decisions that no one above me wanted to make,” she said.
The Department of Interior declined to comment on Dr. Rockman’s case, citing pending litigation.
Patrick Gonzalez, the principal climate change scientist at the National Park Service, requested policy approval in March 2018 to publish a paper based on analysis of more than a century of climate data across 417 national parks.
His supervisor did not get past the opening sentence: “Anthropogenic climate change is altering ecological and human systems globally.”
“Without reading any more of the manuscript, she said, ‘I’m going to have to ask you to change that,’” Dr. Gonzalez recalled. He said in an interview that he was speaking in his own capacity and not on behalf of the federal government.
Emails and other documents show that Dr. Gonzalez then approached John Dennis, the agency’s deputy chief scientist, to protest. Dr. Dennis encouraged compromise.
Documents show that Dr. Dennis highlighted the phrase “anthropogenic,” or human-caused. “Is this word here necessary to the basic scientific thesis of the paper — which I interpret to be ‘climate change is revealed already to have had major impacts to parks?’” he asked.
“From a policy standpoint, it might be too strong for a DOI person to say ‘anthropogenic climate change,’” Dr. Dennis wrote, suggesting instead “carbon dioxide driven climate change.”
Dr. Gonzalez refused to make the change and, after three months, the agency backed down. The study was published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Research Letters in September 2018, without changes.
Conner Swanson, an Interior Department spokesman, said Dr. Gonzalez’s research was about “adaptation to climate change rather than cause of climate change and, as a result, the integrity of the science did not require discussing the cause of climate change in a situation where such use could divert attention from the scientific findings of the article.”
That same summer, the Park Service tried to delete every mention of humanity’s role in climate change in a report on sea level rise. Its lead author, Dr. Caffrey, objected. It was released after more than a year’s delay without the attempted edits. Dr. Caffrey, however, said she was then demoted before her position was eliminated.
Dr. Gonzalez said he was taking a risk telling his story. But, he said, “I aim to serve as a positive example of standing strongly for science.”
Mr. Swanson said that since Mr. Trump took office, the Interior Department had “improved scientific integrity by following the law, using the best available science and relying on the expertise of our professional career staff.”
Trump administration officials have noted that in almost all of these cases, the science was ultimately published.
But scientists said that came at a cost. Dr. Crusius was given informal approval in the summer of 2019 to publish research in the well-regarded journal Earth’s Future, which is published by the American Geophysical Union. Then, in September, after the paper had gone through a round of peer review, his employer, the U.S. Geological Survey, reversed course and opposed publication.
“I appealed this decision, and I was allowed to publish this as a private citizen,” he said.
Dr. Crusius said the research, on the environmental benefits and risks of storing carbon in trees, soil, ocean and wetlands to delay climate impacts, was important because climate change is a problem the government ultimately will need solid science to confront.
“We need all the help we can get, including from both federal and academic scientists,” he said.
The U.S.G.S. denied that the paper was not approved because it dealt with climate change.
Lawmakers and others who work with scientists said publication of the research did not diminish the hurdles thrown in the way, which served to signal that writing about politically disfavored topics comes at a personal price.
At least one case predates the Trump administration. Danny Cullenward, a Stanford Law School lecturer, said the Energy Department tried in 2015 to distance itself from his research, which showed the United States could not meet its Paris Agreement goals with the policies that President Barack Obama was pushing.
It is now widely acknowledged those policies most likely would not have cut emissions enough to meet those goals. But at the time, the Obama administration was working to persuade global leaders that the president’s plans would get the country substantially toward that goal.
Dr. Cullenward, then a research fellow working with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, said a lab adviser initially told him the research could not be released before the Paris Agreement talks. After he objected, he was told the study would require further review.
“I interpreted that to be, ‘We’re going to stick this thing in a black hole,’” Dr. Cullenward said. He resigned his affiliation with the lab.
John German, a spokesman for Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, said Dr. Cullenward had been free to publish his work on his own but that Energy Department research must meet strict peer review standards that had not yet occurred.
Dr. Cullenward said his experience did not compare with the scale of violations in the Trump administration. But, he said, a pro-climate change president would not automatically make scientists’ work secure.
“We can’t get partisan about what scientific integrity means,” he said.

Volunteers in the time of a Pandemic
Hello volunteers! Many of you have been wondering what’s going on with the volunteer program this spring, during the Pandemic... and what to expect for the coming summer. I’ll try to bring you up to date as thoroughly but succinctly as possible.
Reaching us: First, any of us who can do so are teleworking, and have been for some time -- I’m on week four now. I can still be reached by e-mail at [email protected], and if you call my office at 360-569-6567 and leave a message, I receive an e-mail notice letting me know to check my phone. I’m happy to chat with you either way if you have questions.
Much is uncertain: That said, a lot is up in the air. When will the statewide Stay-at-Home Order be lifted? When will the park open after that, and in what form? What role will volunteers play this summer? A lot of those answers are unknown, but we are planning for multiple contingencies. I will share with you, below, what we do know, and what we don’t.
Park gates are closed: Currently, all gates leading into Mount Rainier National Park are closed to public vehicle traffic. This will remain the case at least until the statewide Stay-at-Home Order is lifted. For details and nuances, visit the park’s current conditions page, which also has a lot of cool links for making virtual visits. The park’s home page will always have updated alerts telling you our current status.
When will the gates reopen? As of this writing, a statewide Stay-at-Home Order is in place until May 4. That order could be extended. When the Stay-at-Home Order is lifted, the park’s gates will not necessarily open immediately, nor will full services immediately resume. The park will reopen gradually, with access and services restored as resources are available to do so safely. The park’s management is working on plans for this as we speak.
Seasonal housing will be limited: One thing we know for sure is that seasonal housing will be severely limited this summer. The National Park Service, working with public health agencies and the CDC, has concluded that we cannot pack employees into housing this year as tightly as we usually do. We need to have the capability of isolating employees who get sick. At Mount Rainier, this means we will only have about half the housing capacity we usually do.
Seasonal staff will be reduced: Because our housing is limited, our seasonal hiring will be limited as well. Priority will be given to positions most critical to protecting life, health, and safety, including the protection of park resources. The park’s management team, as we speak, is carefully evaluating every position in the park to decide which are most indispensible.
Services will be reduced: Because we’ll have fewer staff, some programs and services we usually offer will be reduced or unavailable. Which programs? Which services? We don’t know yet. Stay tuned.
Seasonal hiring has been delayed: Even those seasonal employees who are hired this year will start later. Except for those positions critical to life, health, and safety, all positions have been pushed back to at least May 24. This is to allow for social distancing, stay-at-home orders, limitations on travel, and other pandemic response measures to play out, and to give us time to plan what our summer will look like first. For example, in the volunteer program, our seasonal volunteer coordinator and Meadow Rover Manager positions would have all started on May 10. All three are currently scheduled to start May 24 (and again, this could change further).
Programs and places will open later: There’s a ripple effect to starting late, because there’s a sequence of events that typically happen as we open the park for the summer. When the first item in that sequence is delayed (e.g. seasonal hiring), it delays the second task as well (e.g. spring plowing), which in turn delays the third task (e.g. installing road signs), the fourth (turning on utilities), the fifth (opening housing), the sixth (preparing visitor centers), and the seventh (opening to the public).
Programs will happen differently: We don’t know what the public health guidelines will be this summer. To prevent a second wave of infections, will social distancing measures still be in place? How will this affect how we operate visitor centers, hotels, campgrounds, and volunteer programs? We don’t know yet, except to say that things will probably be different than they have been in the past. One example: The Meadow Rover program will probably not be offering large group training sessions in June, as we’ve done in the past. Instead, we will be putting a lot of our training online. We will be developing a “task book” listing required training and options for completing it. As these resources are developed, we will rely more heavily on experienced Rovers at the beginning of the season.
Volunteers are still critical: Doing things differently does not change the fact that volunteers play a crucial role in protecting the park’s natural and cultural resources and serving its visitors. Programs like Meadow Rovers and Emergency Roadside Assistance are still important strategies for accomplishing our mission, and we value our volunteers’ contributions as much as ever, or more so!
Some programs may not happen: That said, some programs may not happen this year, due to a variety of factors. Fewer staff means fewer people to supervise programs. Public health guidelines may recommend limiting the size of groups. Which programs won’t happen this year? That’s yet to be determined. Will we work with volunteer groups at all? We don’t know yet.
The Longmire Campground will still open -- we think: So far, our plans still call for the Longmire Stewardship Campground to open for the summer, for use by volunteers who wish to work at the park for multiple days in a row. When it will open is yet to be determined.
Covid-19 risk factors: As you consider returning to Mount Rainier National Park this summer, it will be important to weigh your own risk factors for Covid-19. The CDC has listed multiple categories of individuals who are at greater risk of developing severe cases of the disease, including older adults, people with asthma or chronic lung disease, people with diabetes or heart conditions, people with kidney or liver disease, and people who are immunocompromised. Some jobs involve more potential exposure to Covid-19, especially those working with the public. You should consider your own risk before planning to work at Mount Rainier, and your supervisor may have a discussion with you about risk factors as well.
Risk mitigation: Each program in the park will be looking at how to reduce the risk of Covid-19 infection. Visitor Centers will be cleaning surfaces much more regularly, for example. Meadow Rovers will be taught techniques for maintaining safer distances from park visitors. Expect to discuss new procedures with your supervisor, regardless of what job you do.
Safety first: Ultimately, every single thing I’ve described here comes down to the same thing: making safety our highest priority. This has always been true; it’s just even more vital in the midst of a global pandemic. All of us need to be extra-vigilant about risk and how to mitigate it. If you see something that is unsafe, please speak up. If you have ideas about how to make our programs safer, we welcome your thoughts.

soojung chose to head towards mido to gain experience, putting her skills to test in a new front for the family business after graduating with accolades from her architecture program in yonsei university.
that’s what her parents are saying, at least. it sounds compelling in their voice, a well-rounded explanation straight out of a public relations advisor’s mouth to avoid further questions. it’s what anyone asking really wants to hear, satisfactory and straight to the point. it’s not a narrative soojung feels in any way compelled to uphold, but she’s not given any chances to dispel the illusion, sent off on the first ferry to the island to be locked away in her personalized purgatory experience.
she doesn’t care, not at this point. she conforms, like she has all her life, because it’s what ultimately serves her best interests.
stuck out of professional brochures, reality is less polished, but no less commonplace – the usual routine for people in her status, as she has learned from experience.
mido was not a choice, it was a desperate measure.
her intergenerational family business was successful enough to put her parents in a position where image was nearly as valuable as wealth, and soojung was a heiress of their riches as well as their responsibilities. that implied there was concern in the jung household when the family’s youngest turned a little too taken to social media modelling and the nightlife scene during her time in pursuing a degree. though soojung wasn’t the appointed successor for the head of the business, a role singled out for her older brother since birth, the family was very much interested in seeing the intellect and leadership embedded into her genes put to the company’s service, rather than wasted on instagram snaps or celebrity affairs.
as soon as they could, they ship her off to mido a project supervisor for the newest branch set in the island. she was to assume a more modest lifestyle, less gangnam lofts and rose wine for happy hour and more small town hardworking, and conquer something for herself. her parents want to take a life lesson out of that, or at least sell their relatives a convincing story.
when her options boiled down to that or risking being cut out of the family’s bank accounts, she’s packing her bags for mido. she thinks herself to be more adaptable than her appearance lets on.
then again, there’s always truth to the whispers running behind her back spelling out her self-obsessed nature.
                                          ⋆ EVERY STORY HAS ITS ROOTS
before she is soojung, she is the jung heiress. her family name is written under a trademark in her genetic makeup, alive in the wake of her presence. tens of small towns across the country have been lifted off the ground under her name, they’re lions in the jungle of concrete, untouchable in the offices and apartments they designed from scratch.
her family is more business than it is moral support. they’re picture perfect and spoiled rotten, riches inherited down from four generations ahead of her parents – they’re not about that nouveaux riches bullshit, anyone who is worth your time in the stock market will spell it out for you they’re the real deal. when her parents got married, officializing the union of a construction empire on her mother’s side with her father’s real estate gravitas, their children would inevitably be raised into the labor.
that is how soojung never had a chance at personhood, rather being raised to be an idea. she’s a recipe that’s been passed from mother to daughter from the moment of conception.
step one, she is made out of copious wealth and a severe reliance on appearances. step two, she was raised outside of the good korean morals and confucian ethics, sheltered in the beverly hills villa with her grandparents to indulge in materialistic hedonism and have her mind molded into the power-starved leader. step three, she has it all so very easy that her only worry is not to let on just how boring it all is.
her brother has it harder – if she’s the pretty-faced back-up plan, he’s the cub trained to become an alpha, staying behind in seoul to familiarize himself with the ropes of the business. they see each other on winter and summer breaks, often in their seasonal house in jejudo, and he looks more and more like the heir her parents were expecting to bear.
she’s bleached clean of most discernible traces of a personality, growing up to be more focused on upholding her image and being fruitful in business. she doesn’t experience need or struggle or frustration, nothing in any meaningful way, beyond the tantrums the monsters in her head orchestrate. the barebones of her persona find other ways to channel themselves into expression: her natural inquisitiveness growing into a tendency to become argumentative, her communication dexterity coming across as manipulative cattiness, her passion and intensity making her obsessed with the only tangible concept accessible in the life she leads – herself.
cult of personality becomes the core of soojung’s emotional axis, her life more of a brand than physical existence.
she moves back to korea for her graduation, rejects the acceptance letters from brown and princeton to take footing in yonsei. she would have prefered staying in the states because she likes calling the country her home, likes searching for herself in that culture solidified in an empire state, but her parents had made clear it would be much more valuable to then if she attended university in korean territory than it would be for her to stay. there’s no threats, really – they simply ask and she has no real reason to say no. she loves them, she wants to think, and it would be appropriate to give them that.
making a new life is not hard for her. she wants to say the shift in culture and the barriers of language are definitely more of a challenge than anything she had previously experienced, but she had become accustomed to both when growing up. it’s different, but not new. it’s a lot more stifling, and she finds her focus to rely less on the classes and more on the attention everyone is so willing to grant her. she is not unlike a celebrity on campus, following on social media growing massive within her first months of arrival, and there’s opportunities to be made when all eyes seem to follow you everywhere.
though initially her parents were satisfied to employ her as a spokesmodel for their construction company in the earlier years of graduation, their exhilaration slowly turned less optimistic as their daughter strayed further from their design. less of the role model academic to impress social circles at dinner parties, but rather an instagram model with a taste for the fine and scandalous, more invested in the nightlife the city had to offer than her rightful position in their projections.
and that’s where mido comes into the picture, and soojung has the slightest inkling telling her maybe, just maybe, bending on her back for the sake of image just might become a colossal pain in the ass one day.

Today was....eh. I think we've officially proven that my mind constantly racing anxiety isn't going to go away now that finals are over, so I REALLY do need to call my psychiatrist because I don't want to go over 3 mg of Xanax a day without talking to him but he's never in his office and I do have his cell phone number but I don't want to bother him, and now I have a 9-5 job so I'd have to call sometime during work and.....ugh. I'm not happy. It's like I just can't get my brain to slow down and it's killing me because everything I do feels like a list of tasks I have to get through as quickly and efficiently as possible. Bake this, make dinner, watch your tv show (I'm not even kidding), check your favorite tumblrs, then maybe relax but still probably thinking unstoppably the whole time. Ugh. But anyway, today. Dragged my ass out of bed at 7 am for the first of many days this summer (like, 50 or so) and got ready for work. Bus to work, the bitchy security guard who hates me wasn't working the metal detector for once so that was nice (I still beeped but hey, it's the little things). Got to the office and reported to the lady that handles internships and such, and she says I can go back to my old office for now so I can go over my final evaluation with my old supervisor (since I am officially assigned to a new calendar). This is their internal evaluation, not my school's one. So I go over it with him and of course most of it is overwhelmingly positive because he thinks I'm great, but there were comments in there like "some of the other attorneys felt Rachel could seek out work for them more often" or that I have issues following directions and like.....that's complete bullshit???? On multiple occasions I made it known that I had nothing to do and would like an assignment, even doing it several times in one day. And I know I followed the damn instructions on every one of those assignments, or at least the ones I was given, but based on the description he gave it was the same attorney who was trying to start shit with me in the beginning of the semester so she's a whack job anyway. He did write that I had stated I did so these things in the report, so that's good. And he was like, you know, I want this to be very positive for you because if you apply for a job here they'll go back and look at this and I wouldn't want this to be the reason you don't get the job and I'm just like uh yeah, me too!! So in all honestly it wasn't that big of a deal but like, it honestly did not put me in a good mood for most of the rest of the day. Sigh. Shortly after that though one of the people from my new calendar came and took me down to court since my official mentor was out on some sort of assignment. So I met everyone in the courtroom, they all seem nice enough. One of the PDs on the child death case I've been working on was in there but she's from the conflicts division so I know she's not assigned to one specific courtroom (we didn't say hi to her). So that was good, and we watched some court. Then I think we went back upstairs and I met my new supervisor/mentor who I immediately recognized as one of the people who had participated in our child interview training so I knew who she was. So I hung out with her for a while and she showed me some stuff (I don't have too many clear memories of what happened here) and then there was definitely a period of time in my old office where I had another episode of freezing so much that I put my winter coat on and was like huddled in on myself and couldn't stop my eyes from closing over and over again, and I'm beginning to get somewhat concerned over these incidents because they're getting quite frequent really and I don't know what to do about them besides get more sleep which is well, not terribly easy. And then there's the lunch issue. I've been having this issue where for the past couple weeks I'll make my big meal on the weekend and I'll eat it that night, and then when I take it as leftovers for lunch throughout the week I'll suddenly have like, no interest in really eating it and just straight up not want to. I was testing this today because I made the chicken pasta dish I love so much, but I still felt myself shoving the chicken down my throat, telling myself it was good for me so I feel compelled to eat it. And like, I know that's not terribly healthy eating behaviors and I try not to make myself eat anything but idk, I don't really know what to do because I don't want to just give up and rely on processed food all the time, but like my body just doesn't want to eat what I cook??? Idk, I really have no idea what's causing it. Ugh. But anyway. After lunch we went back down to court a bit and watched a little before heading back upstairs and I went into my new office. Somewhere in all the mess I had been given my first assignment that I was trying to work on during the morning but we had a bit of a tech fail. It was basically to listen to a bunch of phone calls between a perp and the mother of his kid that he's jailed for abusing and just making note of anything they say about their daughter or wanting to get back together (I know, telephone surveillance, I definitely felt a bit like the NSA here). So we had it all set up and then when I went to press play nothing happened. So I try again, and again, and try every other thing I can think of to get it to work. So I go back to the lady who gave me the assignment, who got the tech guy, who came and sat at my computer for a solid 20 minutes before becoming totally stumped and being like "I'll be back with my higher ups" and I think some time after that was when I began nodding off for perspective's sake. But now I was gonna be in my new office so they could just get this computer to cooperate.....but that also proved a challenge and they ended up like, swapping the computer out for another one and it's not fully mended but they said they'd get it done tomorrow morning. My supervisor and I went over some stuff she had coming up I've the week, and she wants me to do a child interview with a 5 year old girl on Wednesday, so I read her case file. Poor kid, man. The file was filled with reports, both unfounded and indicated to both her and others by different people in her life and it's just like man, this poor kid has had to have had it rough. So hopefully that will go well. So I took some notes and brought them back to my supervisor and she added a few things she wanted me to have in there, and said it was pretty good. I went home shortly after this, except I ubered home for good reason, because I left the cookies I had made for my dinner tonight on my kitchen table tonight and I couldn't just not show up with cookies when I said I was going to bring cookies, so I ran up there and ran in and out of my apartment then back downtown a bit to my friend/supervisors apartment. Turns out that although the meeting was supposed to be for all the kids ministry coaches, it was heavily dominated by the babies team because we basically all showed up and every other team had like, one person there lol. So we ate pizza and talked and laughed, and ended up playing two truths and a lie as a kind of get to know you game for our new family ministries director. Mine were 1) both my parents are lawyers (false) 2) all my siblings were born on dates with negative connotations except me (true) 3) I once hopped the gate of a monastery in Scotland at 3 am (because that story is just too good to not bring up). And I fooled pretty much everyone, lol. But yeah, it was nice and fun and I don't know why I still felt anxious when I left which annoyed me. So I walked to a bus stop not too far away and had to wait like ten minutes for the bus to show, but then took t all the way home. Watched Supergirl, not too many thoughts and my eyes are closing rapidly right now which makes typing difficult so I'm gonna owe you a review in that one that I promise I'll come through with in the next few days. Response to Mike Rose’s “Blue-Collar Brilliance”
I said I wouldn’t share this if another post didn’t show enough interest, but @yoursinfulsister asked to see it and I didn’t really need a strong excuse anyway.
For my Writing Seminar course, we were supposed to write a five-page response to this article. He wrote about how a lot of workers in low-class jobs are considered to not have intelligence, and about how it’s a gross misconception. I recommend reading it for the full context of this paper. Here was my response to his article:
Mike Rose speaks on the concept of most jobs fitting into one of two categories: the intellectual or “white-collar”, and the physical or “blue-collar”. Hearing these groups, examples come to mind: accountants, lawyers, teachers propped up against steelworkers, construction workers, or plumbers. We immediately categorize work differently in order to treat it differently. I’m not sure my first job could have been a more fitting example of this divide.
While I was in high school, my school district decided to try something new. Every student is given a laptop assigned to them to help with schoolwork and develop technology literacy skills, and every summer, they hire a few professionals to deal with the hundreds and hundreds of computers needing maintenance over the break. This year, they planned to hire a handful of mildly tech-savvy, and cheap, students instead. They also knew that they were short on janitors for cleaning each building while the students were out.
So, in the main library, applications were put out: you simply checked which of the two positions you were applying for, why you wanted to work there, and how many hours you would be available.
This turned out to be a grave mistake on their part. For starters, through some form of miscommunication, 12 “technology interns” were hired for the five open slots. For another, not a single person applied to be a janitor. Having relied on a boost of students to fill out their gaps, they were now even more short-staffed than before.
A solution was reached: the interns would rotate between the job they had applied for, and being janitors, to help even out the balance in each. Anyone unwilling to accept this could leave. (One quit, one threatened to sue for the position, and an additional two were later fired for committing crimes at work.) As much as I wasn’t happy with the arrangement, I knew that the administration was doing its best in an unusual situation, and certainly preferred it to not having a job at all. I stayed.
Working as an intern was repetitive, but concerningly easy. Our first task was to update the software on every laptop in the school and set up the school’s network (a process called “imaging”), which required first wiping them of personal data as a matter of policy. CHARLOTTESVILLE — Nearly a year after the Trump Organization pledged to root out undocumented workers at its properties, supervisors at the Trump Winery on Monday summoned at least seven employees and fired them because of their lack of legal immigration status, according to two of the dismissed workers.
The timing of the firings at the rural Virginia winery, 11 months after the company began purging the ranks of undocumented greenskeepers and cooks at Trump golf courses, came during the vineyard’s winter downtime. Workers had finished the arduous annual grape harvest, which involved working 60-hour weeks and overnight shifts under floodlights.
Two of the fired workers — Omar Miranda, a 42-year-old tractor driver from Honduras, and a second employee who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect family members seeking to stay in the United States — said they thought the company had held off on firing them until after the year’s work was complete, taking advantage of their labor for as long as possible. Both had worked at the winery for more than a decade.
“They didn’t make this decision in the summer because they needed us a lot then,” Miranda said. The second employee said, “I think they wanted to get their product out well, the grapes, to make sure that was taken care of, and once things were slow, they could fire us all.”
In response to questions from The Washington Post, the Trump Organization emailed only a statement that said, “Consistent with our efforts, we will immediately terminate any individual who has provided fake identification in order to unlawfully gain employment.”
The Trump Winery, set amid rolling hills in Virginia wine country, is a minor part of President Trump’s portfolio. The property is located near President Thomas Jefferson’s former home at Monticello and down the road from a winery owned by musician Dave Matthews. Trump bought the property in 2011 and 2012 out of foreclosure for $16.2 million, renovated the manor house into a boutique hotel and created an adjacent venue for weddings.
The labor-intensive winery has long relied on a couple dozen immigrants — primarily from Mexico — who legally arrive year after year on seasonal work visas, living in a dormitory on the winery property during the harvest. But there has also long been a smaller parallel staff of undocumented employees who worked at the property year-round. This was the group fired Monday.
“Donald Trump has known about these workers for months,” said Anibal Romero, an immigration lawyer who represents many of Trump’s former undocumented employees and is advising Miranda. “He waits until the fields are tended, grapes picked, wine made. He then discards them like a used paper bag. Happy New Year — you’re fired.”
Over the past year, The Post has spoken with 49 people who had worked illegally for the Trump Organization at 11 of its properties in Florida, New Jersey, New York and Virginia. These employees spent years — and in some cases nearly two decades — performing manual labor at Trump’s properties.
Trump has made stopping illegal immigration a centerpiece of his presidency, decrying unauthorized immigrants as a threat to the country’s safety and blaming undocumented workers for taking jobs from American citizens. But for years his company has relied on that low-wage, illegal labor, without explaining how some employees kept their jobs despite lacking proper papers.
The New York Times reported in December 2018 that undocumented workers were employed at Trump’s golf club in New Jersey. Shortly after, the Trump Organization promised to fire any of its workers in the country illegally.
Miranda, aware of the firings at other Trump properties throughout the year, spent months living with the anxiety of knowing that his dismissal could come at any moment. After a Spanish-language report by Univision in May revealed that the winery employed some undocumented workers, the Trump Organization appeared to take no action apart from firing the employee who let the camera crew onto the property.
The fall harvest came, and Miranda spent hours driving a tractor in the predawn dark. Then fall turned to winter, and he did the hard work of pruning vines. His bosses only praised his work, never mentioning immigration, papers or firings. The president’s son Eric Trump, who oversees the winery, even pulled Miranda’s name during a holiday raffle in early December, awarding him a $500 prize.
Then on Monday, the bosses asked to see him.
“So, when we looked at your forms and documents, some of the documentation did not seem genuine, or was insufficient,” Kerry Woolard, the winery’s general manager, told him, according to an audio recording obtained by The Post. “Do you currently have legal permission to work in the United States?”
“No,” Miranda replied.
“So unfortunately, this means we have to end our employment relationship today,” Woolard said. “We’re very sad. You’ve been wonderful. If your employment status ever changes, you’re welcome back, of course.”
Then she gave him a big hug, Miranda said.
On Tuesday at the winery, the vast rows of vines were leafless and empty, and the tractors Miranda had used were parked neatly in a row. A receptionist said that Woolard did not have time to speak to a reporter.
SMUGGLED TO THE U.S.
The Post has spoken extensively to Miranda over the past five months — interviewing him in Spanish and on the condition that no article would be published while he still worked at the winery. The Post confirmed Miranda’s employment by viewing pay stubs and observing him punching in at the winery’s security gate.
Miranda’s job was to drive a tractor down the narrow trellis rows. Some days, that meant spraying pesticides on the chardonnay and viognier grapes. On other occasions, he guided motorized pruning blades to trim the leaves. From his cockpit, he would share his cellphone videos of his work with The Post.
“It’s not difficult, but it gets boring,” he said in one video from August.
Because of worsening back pain, Miranda preferred these tasks to the job of picking grapes by hand and loading them into yellow plastic bins. Much of that work was done by legal immigrants — the Mexicans on temporary work visas.
This year, the Trump Organization received permission for 29 such seasonal visas.
But the winery also relied on illegal labor to supplement those positions. Miranda and other former staffers said that undocumented employees assisted with the winemaking and storage process, with landscaping around the hotel, and in the fields.
Many of these employees, including Miranda, live in Southwood, a trailer park tucked in the woods on the outskirts of Charlottesville, about 120 miles southwest of Washington.
Miranda had been a lathe operator in his native Honduras, making plastic parts for a Honduran beer company. After his brother received death threats from a rival businessman, Miranda paid a smuggler $5,500 to get to the United States. He swam the Rio Grande in 2004 and soon moved to the trailer park in Charlottesville.
After Trump purchased the winery, he converted the manor house into a boutique hotel known as the Albemarle Estate at Trump Winery. Inside the hotel, rooms come with Trump-branded slippers; a miniature Trump chocolate bar in the shape of a gold brick rests by the pillow. In the downstairs library, the books skew conservative, with volumes by Bill O’Reilly and Dinesh D’Souza.
Some of the workers involved in renovating the manor house were also undocumented — members of a roving group of Trump Organization stonemasons called “Los Picapiedra,” or “The Flintstones,” by other Spanish-
speaking Trump employees.
Maids who cleaned the rooms and landscapers who tended the manicured gardens — “inspired by Palladio’s Villa Rotunda in Vicenza, Italy,” according to a brochure — also did not have legal status, according to former workers.
Legally, the wine is manufactured by the Eric Trump Wine Manufacturing Company, of which Eric Trump is president. But the president owns the land under the winery, which produces rental income — between $300,000 and $3 million in 2018, according to his financial disclosures. He also owns the Albemarle hotel on the property, which took in $1.14 million in revenue in 2018.
Miranda was officially employed by a Trump Organization entity called Trump Vineyard Estates LLC, according to Miranda’s paychecks.
Miranda first joined the winery under its previous owner and then was hired by Trump in 2013, using fake documents he had purchased for $120.
“The papers one uses, they know it’s something illegal,” Miranda said. “The owner knows. The winemaker knows.”
Miranda said a longtime vineyard field supervisor who is no longer with the company was also undocumented and knew many employee working for him were in the same situation. Other managers helped fill out applications for employees without legal status, Miranda said.
'UNBEARABLE PAIN '
Miranda earned $15.75 per hour and often worked 60-hour weeks during the harvest — without higher overtime pay because of an exemption for agricultural workers in overtime laws. With that, plus odd jobs repairing his neighbors’ appliances and any lathe work he could find, he supported his wife and 11-year-old son. For a stretch in the late summer, he would wake up at 2 a.m. and work under floodlights. Some delicate grapes have to be picked in the dark before the sun shrinks them.
“It’s the hardest time of the year,” he said.
While Miranda was disgusted by the president’s rhetoric about illegal immigration, he was terrified about losing his job. At the winery, he received holidays off, plus two weeks per year of paid vacation, 48 hours of sick pay and holidays off.
The most crucial benefit was the health insurance the company provided. Pinched nerves in his back had nearly immobilized him during different stretches this year and sent him repeatedly to the hospital. He is now taking oxycodone, an opioid, to ease what he describes as “unbearable pain.” At other wineries, he said, he most likely couldn’t get such benefits.
“He’s got me captive because I’m illegal,” he said in August, referring to the president. “He can say whatever he wants.”
For months this year he worried that his time was running out. He was friends with some of the other immigrant workers that Trump had fired elsewhere. He couldn’t come up with any reason the winery staff wouldn’t be fired except that if it had happened, the season’s wine production might be lost.
He discreetly inquired at other wineries about jobs, without success.
By December, the Mexican seasonal workers had returned home, and the skeleton staff — including Miranda and the second employee — had begun the winter maintenance work.
They began to think it was possible they might not be fired after all. During Eric Trump’s holiday visit, he had nothing but kind words for the staff.
“He gave me his hand,” Miranda said in an interview in early December, remembering his raffle winner’s handshake with Trump, who treated him as a valued part of the team. “Eric is like a co-worker,” Miranda said then.
Then, in the three-minute conversation Monday, it was over.
Miranda said he felt like the president saw him as an embarrassment to be eliminated before the 2020 campaign heated up.
“He wants a clean slate,” Miranda said.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. said Tuesday that federal judges have an important role in promoting civic education and explaining government in an age “when social media can instantly spread rumor and false information on a grand scale.”
“We have come to take democracy for granted, and civic education has fallen by the wayside,” Roberts wrote in his annual Year-End Report on the Federal Judiciary, adding that federal judges have “an important role to play.”
But in listing ways the judiciary has reached out to the public, Roberts did not mention one possibility urged by many members of Congress and overwhelmingly supported by Americans: televising the Supreme Court’s oral arguments or streaming audio from the sessions.
The justices, Roberts included, say they fear that cameras in the court could lead to grandstanding by attorneys or disruption of the arguments. The goal of oral arguments is not to educate the public, Roberts has said, but to aid the justices in reaching a proper conclusion based on the law.
As is his custom, Roberts praised the independence of the federal judiciary, a subject on which he has crossed swords with President Trump, who has criticized as biased the judges who have ruled against him and his administration’s policies.
Roberts did not reengage in that battle. But he did seem to allude to his upcoming role in presiding over the Senate impeachment trial of the president.
“We should reflect on our duty to judge without fear or favor, deciding each matter with humility, integrity, and dispatch,” Roberts wrote. “As the New Year begins, and we turn to the tasks before us, we should each resolve to do our best to maintain the public’s trust that we are faithfully discharging our solemn obligation to equal justice under law.”
Roberts’s report is an annual New Year’s Eve tradition, and the chief justice picks the topic. As it was released, the court disclosed that Roberts’s mother had died over the holidays in Westminster, Md. The obituary for Rosemary Roberts, 90, said she died on Dec. 28, “surrounded by her family.”
Chief Justice Roberts wrote that this year’s topic, civic education, “is a continuing enterprise and conversation. Each generation has an obligation to pass on to the next, not only a fully functioning government responsive to the needs of the people, but the tools to understand and improve it.”
There were a couple of other notable inclusions in the chief justice’s report.
Roberts praised, without naming, President Barack Obama’s 2016 nominee to the Supreme Court, Judge Merrick Garland, who never received a hearing in the Republican-controlled Senate.
“The current chief judge of the District of Columbia Circuit has, over the past two decades, quietly volunteered as a tutor at a local elementary school, inspiring his court colleagues to join in the effort,” Roberts wrote. “I am confident that many other federal judges, without fanfare or acclaim, are playing similar selfless roles throughout the country.”
Roberts also singled out the court’s 1954 ruling in Brown v. Board of Education as an example of how judges can communicate with the public.
Although Roberts at his 2005 confirmation hearing praised the desegregation ruling, a number of judges nominated by Trump have refused to answer Democratic senators’ questions about Brown.
They have said the questioning is an attempt to get them on the record as supporting one court precedent so they can be pressed about others, such as rulings on abortion.
Roberts seems not to have qualms.
“Chief Justice Earl Warren illustrated the power of a judicial decision as a teaching tool in Brown v. Board of Education, the great school desegregation case,” he wrote. “His unanimous opinion on the most pressing issue of the era was a mere 11 pages — short enough that newspapers could publish all or almost all of it and every citizen could understand the court’s rationale.”

A new year and a new decade does not, unfortunately, mean a clean slate for the country or the world. We bring into 2020 the baggage of 2019 — and if it is any consolation, at least with clarity about the dangers and challenges we collectively face. Front and center remain the impeachment of a disloyal president and a party willing to defend him with Russian propaganda. However, let us look at two other developments that may well boil over in 2020, and which are tearing at the fabric of the United States and affecting our national security.
The Hanukkah holiday brought a frightening reminder of the upsurge in violent anti-Semitic attacks. The stabbing attack that wounded five at an Orthodox rabbi’s home in Rockland County, N.Y., was far from an isolated event. The perpetrator was charged with attempted murder and federal hate crimes. The Post reported:
“Even before Monday’s charges brought a potential motive into focus, many officials and community leaders had denounced anti-Semitism and expressed concern about a spate of attacks on Jewish residents. Saturday’s stabbing was the 13th anti-Semitic incident in three weeks in New York state, the governor said, calling the Monsey stabbing ’domestic terrorism.’ Earlier this month, four people were fatally shot in what officials called a targeted attack on a Jersey City kosher grocery store.”
It is no surprise that in an era in which white nationalism is on the rise, the attorney general advocates for a theocratic state, the president echoes “replacement” theology, and politicians on both sides of the aisle tweet and retweet anti-Semitic memes, violent anti-Semites now feel emboldened. The attack was roundly condemned by politicians on both sides, including President Trump — who repeatedly has fanned anti-Semitic tropes — and the Democratic presidential contenders.
Nevertheless, it was left to the only Jewish presidential candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), to make a public and personal showing of defiance. (“Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who had relatives killed by Nazis during the Holocaust, responded Sunday to the latest incident of anti-Semitic terror by wearing a kippah and lifting a blowtorch to light a public menorah on the final night of Hanukkah,” The Post reported. “And less than 24 hours after an intruder stabbed five Hasidic Jews at a rabbi’s home in New York, the Democratic presidential candidate delivered an urgent speech on a frigid evening in Des Moines decrying recent attacks against Jews and other minorities.”)
It is not enough for the same leaders and politicians, mostly in New York, New Jersey and other environs with large Jewish populations, to speak up. It is not enough to raise the issue only after a horrific attack. It requires a uniform and immediate response from Republicans when the president goes on his next anti-Semitic jag, and when Trump and other Republicans accuse the entire Democratic Party of being anti-Jewish. Republicans who defend and rationalize Trump’s anti-Semitic attacks, citing his positions on Israel, are part of the problem, and must take responsibility for the president’s white nationalist rhetoric as well as his refusal to take domestic terrorism seriously.
It requires a uniform and immediate response from progressives when Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party’s indulgence of anti-Semitism has managed to convince 87 percent of British that Jews Corbyn is an anti-Semite. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) declared in a written statement released on Tuesday, “While the Trump Administration has touted its maximum pressure campaign against Iran, the results so far have been more threats against international commerce, emboldened and more violent proxy attacks across the Middle East, and now, the death of an American citizen in Iraq.”
It is frankly pathetic that administration officials in charge of Iran policy, the very ones who touted the withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and who defend Trump’s incoherent approach to Syria, still blame former president Barack Obama (!). This recent performance by Brian Hook, special representative on Iran, on PBS’s NewsHour was downright pathetic:

Brian Hook: Well, what we saw was an erosion of deterrence for the many years preceding the president’s election three years ago. What we have done is, we have now sanctioned over 1,000 individuals and entities as part of the Iranian regime. We’re trying to restore deterrence. We’re trying to reverse the gains made by the Iranian regime over the last many years. Iran today faces its worst financial crisis and its worst political unrest in its 40-year history. But if we’re attacked, then we’re going to respond, as the president did yesterday.
Nick Schifrin: But I know that you want to talk ability deterrence after the Iran nuclear deal a few years ago, but the deterrence over the last few months, I have heard from military officials fearing that that deterrence has been lost. Do you worry that that deterrence, that the fact that Iran felt it could get away with these attacks, do you feel like that was happening because the U.S. wasn’t responding to previous attacks?
Brian Hook: Well, I think we did respond. We certainly increased the number of sanctions on the regime. We enhanced our intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets. We also put more troops in the region. We removed the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group. So we did a number of things.
But during that same period of time, the president and Secretary Pompeo made clear that we will use military force if we are attacked. And that happened then a few days ago. The president, as I said, has shown a great deal of restraint, because the last thing America is looking for is another conflict in the Middle East.
And none of that has worked. (Recall how incensed Republicans were when Obama administration defenders continued to blame the Bush 43 team for the conflagration that followed removal of troops in 2011, two years after Bush left office.) The policy of unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), maximum pressure without a willingness to use force when challenged, and ceding Syria to Iran and Russia have increased violence and instability — and decreased U.S. influence. We are now free game for tin-pot dictators and jihadist mobs. Republican self-described hawks who would be screaming for a national security team shake-up and rethinking of U.S. policy instead circle the wagons around an impulsive and ignorant president. It will take a responsible Congress, a new president and a legion of dedicated civilian and military officials to find a road to repair U.S. prestige and influence.
Both at home and abroad, then, there are dark trends that demand our serious attention. Whether we can rise to the occasion collectively, regardless of partisan loyalties, to address them will greatly influence whether we are able to put a dismal chapter in U.S. history behind us.

Reading the tea leaves for 2020

My crystal ball got a little cloudy in 2019, so as the new year dawns, join me in what the late, great New York Times columnist Bill Safire liked to call the “office pool,” where, as he put it, “every reader becomes a pundit.” Some of my suggested answers are fanciful, some entirely serious. But whatever the news brings, a happy 2020 to all.
1) During 2020, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will: (a) take the additional title of prime minister and declare elections for a Saudi parliament; (b) offer China a larger role in the development of his futuristic city of Neom; (c) expand commercial and academic ties with Israel and announce an interfaith study center in Riyadh; (d) create a royal commission to ensure that the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi could never happen again.
2) For North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, the biggest challenge of 2020 will be: (a) establishing a Central Committee department to research possible quid pro quos to offer President Trump; (b) worrying about what life might bring if his “great friendship” with Trump doesn’t endure past Inauguration Day 2021; (c) signing an accord on the White House South Lawn for a joint U.S.-North Korean nuclear research and real estate investment program.
3) Iranian politics will be rocked during 2020 by: (a) Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s nomination of hard-line chief justice Ebrahim Raisi as his chosen successor; (b) a campaign by Quds Force leader Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani to blame the “authorities” for instability and violence in Iran; (c) a comeback try by former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad pitching Trump-style populism; (d) all of the above.
4) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will demonstrate his impulsive independence during 2020 by: (a) secretly helping Russia install a new government in Libya, replicating Moscow’s Syria intervention; (b) threatening to impound U.S. nuclear weapons at Incirlik Air Base unless he can keep U.S. F-35 fighters and a Russian air-defense system to shoot them down; (c) building a lavish “Turkey Loves Trump” spa and resort in Bodrum run by Trump family pal Mehmet Ali Yalcindag; (d) annexing the northern Cyprus territory that has been under Turkish control since 1974, with Vladimir Putin’s acquiescence, in return for recognizing Russian annexation of Crimea.
5) Chinese President Xi Jinping’s biggest headache in 2020 will be: (a) stopping Hong Kong protests without killing thousands of Chinese demonstrators; (b) suppressing Internet and press freedom in Taiwan following the reelection of President Tsai Ing-wen in January; (c) resisting pressure from the People’s Liberation Army to abolish the rival Ministry of State Security and incorporate its intelligence functions within the PLA; (d) all of the above.
6) The economic surprise of 2020 will be: (a) the Justice Department files an antitrust suit against Amazon; (b) the Dow Jones industrial average falls below 20,000; (c) Facebook merges with NBCUniversal; (d) the European Union announces that, because of the unpredictability caused by overuse of U.S. sanctions, all European finance will be “de-linked” from the dollar; (e) the corporate debt bubble begins to burst as a result of several high-profile downgrades and defaults; (f) none of the above.
7) The political surprise of 2020 will be: (a) President Trump replacing Mike Pence with Nikki Haley as his running mate; (b) Joe Biden announcing that, if elected, his vice presidential nominee Stacey Abrams will attend all National Security Council and CIA briefings; (c) Republican Rep. Devin Nunes (Calif.), defeated for reelection to Congress, opening a global private intelligence group called “NeverSteele”; (d) Trump ordering the U.S. military to guard polling places to prevent “massive voter fraud” on Election Day.
8) The “sleeper” military crisis of 2020 will be: (a) Russian deployment of hypersonic nuclear weapons for which the United States has no defense or counterpunch; (b) Chinese space weapons that can blind U.S. spy satellites, hack communications satellites and limit projection of military power; (c) new bioweapons being developed by China, Russia and other countries that can target specific populations — and create super-empowered warriors that are tougher, faster and smarter than others on the battlefield; (d) all of the above.
Extra credit: By the end of 2020, which country will have eradicated “extreme poverty” as defined by the World Bank? Which will have the largest economy, as measured by the CIA and IMF? Which will lead AI competitions for voice recognition, facial recognition and financial technology?
