"Hey Glerf, Glerf!"
"Yeah?"
"What's it doing?"
Glerf turned around to look into the enclosure their new pet human came in. It was all huddled up in the corner, half-hidden by it's comestible bin. Dialing up the magnification on their headset, they took a closer look. "Uh, looks like it's expelling liquids from it's face orifices. Lemme check the 'net."
After a couple false starts with "human expel liquid" and "human defecation" Glerf found a hit under "Why human face wet".
"Oh, it's uh... it's doing that because... well, you see-"
"Glerf! Is it gonna die or what?"
"No, it's just um, just uh, it's a thing humans do when they feel, uh, feelings."
Wulg distended their flange. "Feelings. Damn it Glerf, this is why you shouldn't shop on the seedier sites! That sounds like it's definitely illegal. Hold on, let's try something." Wulg looked around, spotting a fast food bag from Ululu(Taste the Hoj!). Fishing around, Wulg pulled out a couple napkins and a utensil.
"Aw, c'mon Wulg," Glerf whinged, "how could something that small be sapient? It's ridiculous, it's smaller than a ril or a freen."
Opening the lid, Wulg dropped the napkins by the human and the utensil by the disc. Cowering but watchful, the human waited until the lid was closed, then grabbed the nearest napkin, wrapping it around their lower body. "Look Glerf, it's got shame, those bits are probably some sort of taboo. And watch, it's putting another one on like a rain coat." Despite feeling the six eyes intently focused on it, the human forayed across the enclosure, seizing the utensil and giving it a few experimental swings. Dragging the tip of the utensil over the ground, the little human began to draw a circle.
"Well what's it doing now Wulg?"
"Wait for it to finish, you dope. So far it's just a bunch of squiggly lines."
Painstakingly, the image took form. One, a globe with lines. Wulg frowned. "It's smart enough to know what planets are, Glerf. I think you've really done it this time." The second image was nigh incomprehensible, some sort of disc with a triangle coming out of it, but with a biped line figure in the triangle. "Maybe it's a tree or something?" The third image was a lot more sobering. It was a bunch of those little figures that the human was using, but the human waited until they had both stopped talking before tapping the globe, then the beam, then one of the figures, before using the flat end of the utensil to scrape the figure away. Awkwardly, Glerf and Wulg watched in silence as the little human drew a box, and then drew a figure in it. Glerfs tendrils began to flatten when the human started drawing a facsimile of a line drawing of a Berflordi. Throwing the utensil down, the human pointed at Glerf with its tiny little arm. Glerf's mandibles caught in his cheek pouches.
The human brought both it's little arms up, and did something with it's tiny little manipulators so only the middle digit on each grasper was extended. Glerf heaved a sigh. "Yeah, yeah, this thing is sapient. I'm pretty sure whatever that motion is, it's not a blessing to my egg sac."
Wulg grimaced. "You've really stepped in it this time. They'll probably let you off easier if you hand over the netcode for whatever Trijj sold you this human, but until then, you've got a living breathing being you're responsible for. You'd better hope wherever it's from is close, and you really better hope the rest of it's itty-bitty race is close enough to spaceflight that it can be re-homed. And don't even get me started on how badly this is going to reflect on the galactic community. It's bad enough that some Trijj is out there catching these things to sell, but we're going to have to come clean about this to their people if we can expect them not to go all Dwuqia and start making war with whatever sticks and stones they have their hands on." Glerf snapped, "Can I get a word in shorewise?" Popping the lid of the enclosure, Glerf reached in for the water dispenser. Carrying their conversation to the kitchen, Glerf griped, "It's all well and good to make me out like a bad person, but how was I to know? Sure, it *was* a Trijj I bought it off of," turning off the tap, Glerf sealed the lid of the dispenser, "but even the smallest sapient race we've found still stands at least four trills high, not three quarters of a- oh no."
"On no?" Wulg echoed. "What's th-oh no." The unsealed lid was open wider than it had been when they left, and the enclosure was empty. "It's loose."
After adopting a human on the intergalactic black market you’re shocked to discover it’s actually sapient.
