“I went to the depot, looked up at the stars. Cried, some train don’t come, there’ll be some walkin’ done.”

When Ryan strummed his guitar, it was magic. The music floated through the air in D and A minor, an arpeggio of time that was broken down and descended. If you closed your eyes, you were sitting outside in Mississippi on a balmy summer night, dewy grass dampening your skirt as you watched fireflies blink out of time while you drank homemade moonshine. It was 1931 and Prohibition was in full swing, but your daddy didn’t care and neither did his backwoods friends. 

Ryan’s smooth-as-silk voice and long fingers dancing and picking guitar strings was your backdrop, and you’d always find your eyes fluttering shut during that one particular song, fully invested in your daydream. A small smile would tug at the corners of your lips, and Ryan knew why. You’d told him about your little fantasy late one night after too much Bayou Teche. You’d gotten it shipped to chill inside the refrigerator until Ryan arrived, and by the time he was gone, each of you had halved the beer until all you had left was empty,  brown glass bottles. 

The Geeshie Wiley tune was one of Ryan’s standards when he was off busking between hopping freight trains to his next destination. He played covers mostly, and most people seemed to recognize Last Kind Words, even with a male voice singing the lyrics.  You’d heard him play it dozens of times, whether out on the street surrounded by a small audience or the comfort of your front porch steps. No matter how many times, you were always transported back in time. 

It had been a humid, cloudy night in May, spring melting into summer as you sat next to Ryan on your old wooden porch swing, hung by rusted wooden chains. Your eyes were heavy; you were drowsy and instead of Ryan’s guitar in his lap, it was a small black book and a old, chewed up PaperMate pen— no frills, clear plastic showing an ink cartridge that was two-thirds used up, cap off and stuck on the pen’s end. 

Your eyes had drifted shut, your head resting on Ryan’s right shoulder. Almost asleep, you felt Ryan’s weight shift and the swing beneath you sway out of time. Eyelids popping open, you lifted your head as Ryan sat back upright, a scrap of sheet music pinned between his thumb and long, tattooed index finger. You saw that the paper was singed at the edges and just a partial page— less than half, the ink beginning to fade. Always learning about Ryan, you smiled softly as he tucked it back between two blank pages of his book. 

“I didn’t know you could read sheet music,” you spoke, Ryan’s head turning to look at you. 

“A little… sorry I woke you up, Y/N.” The corners of his mouth twitched into a smile as he looked at you with those eyes a few shades darker than chestnut. Reaching up, he softly brushed wayward hair behind your ear. 

Drowsy eyes meeting his own, you shook your head. “I didn’t realize I fell asleep… what’s the song?”

Ryan closed his book, capped his pen, and the swing tilted as he set his notebook on the stained wooden planks of the porch. When he was upright again, he shifted in order to wrap an arm around your shoulder and pull you closer. You breathed in deeply, always trying to memorize his scent-- the organic smell of the outdoors, tinged with soap from his shower. He kissed the crown of your head before answering.

“ ‘S one that you know,” he spoke softly, in a low voice. The music of night-- the chirping of crickets, croaking of frogs, screeching of owls and rustles of leaves under the tiny feet of rodents all went unnoticed when he spoke. It was no matter that his voice was barely above a whisper. “I’d be bold enough to say it’s even a favorite… might be a favorite of mine if I was forced to pick.” 

You thought for a moment, a small furrow settling in your brow. “That’s pretty general, Brenner. You sing Happy Birthday, and it would be my favorite.” 

Ryan only responded with a chuckle; he was really playing this game. With a slight squeeze of your shoulder, he finally spoke, but only to set one ground rule: “Only yes or no questions, Y/N.”

The smile he’d put on your face grew into a grin; there was an infinite list of things you loved about Ryan Brenner, and his moments of playfulness were high up there. They accompanied your love for his introspective nature, the fearless lifestyle he lived with a streak of adventure, how his overgrown hair tended to fall over his forehead in the same spot, how his voice transported you to another time… another time.

“Last Kind Words,” you guessed, putting just enough distance between the two of you to look up at his face and gauge a reaction. Ryan’s lips quirked, and his brow raised slightly in appreciation. 

“I didn’t know you read sheet music,” he joked lightly, punctuating the recycling of your words with a wink. 

It was the littlest of things that still uncaged the butterflies in your stomach, the familiar fluttering of their painted wings flickering in your abdomen. All it took was an unconscious hum, or a quick meeting of your eyes with his… a wink to make you feel like you could fly.

“Do I win a performance?” Catching his eyes with yours, you knew he would see the ‘I love you’ there without words. Ryan was in tune with everything he was presented, attentive and never distracted. You paused, the look in your eyes changing from one of pride and internal laughter to a slight curiousness. 

“You know the song,” you thought aloud, obviously introspective, “What’s a little scrap of its sheet music for? Burned at the ends, at that.”

Ryan hummed, and for one beat of time, you saw a faraway nostalgia in his eyes. “Somthin’ I’ve been carryin’ with me since I left Virginia.” Ryan never referred to home as anything other than Virginia. “Used to be a full sheet, too.” 

You knew that there was a significance; a story. How much Ryan would reveal was the only mystery, and something you’d grown to appreciate. He expressed closeness and intimacy in his own, unique ways that you had learned to understand. And Ryan continued. 

“When I was… let’s say, younger than ten, my grampa found me hidin’ in the garage strummin’ on his guitar. I was already figurin’ I was  gettin’ the belt, but he just came an’ he sat down. ‘You don’t learn chords, boy, you don’t bother touchin’ it, ya hear?’ Later that night, he gave me this sheet, just part of the song, didn’t say nothin’.” He’d averted his eyes, found a thread in his jeans to pick at. “An’ when I was older, I started learnin’ chords.” 

The nightsong began to get louder, you thought, as Ryan finished his story. Male crickets were getting more desperate for mates; so were the frogs; nocturnal predators were getting anxious for their prey. 

“I’d hopped a train, got past the point of anyone findin’ me and it was the dead of winter. I was makin’ a fire, or tryin’, but the wind was howlin’, I was throwin’ things in the tin I was usin’ to keep that fire goin’ an’ I grabbed that along with a bunch’a stuff that didn’t matter. That’s the rest of the story.”

Finally, Ryan abandoned that loose thread from his denim jeans. Head still ducked, he lifted his gaze to meet yours. You offered him a shadow of a smile, searching his warm brown eyes. 

Then, you took his hand, and with both of yours, turned it around. You surveyed his palm calloused from hopping trains, fingertips rough from guitar strings. You traced the lines of his palm— first the head line, located in the center, then his life line, and finally his heart line. Glancing up at him, your eyes landed on his lips, the small and almost undetectable smile of wonder crooking the corners of his mouth upward. His smile was contagious. 

Turning his palm over to look at the back of his hand, you redirected your attention to his long fingers— tattooed horizontal lines just below his top knuckles, vertical ones inked between the bottom two. You brushed the pad of your thumb over  the length of his index finger before lifting his hand to your lips and gently peppering tiny kisses over each of his fingertips.

In response, he gently took his hand back to use his index finger in lifting your chin. Everything I’ll ever need, he thought to himself in absolute certainty. She’s everything. Ryan drank in the color of your eyes, the slight slope of your nose, the shape and curve of your mouth. His eyes lingered there for a moment, and he used his finger to lift your chin higher. 

Without hesitation, his mouth was on yours, passion and tenderness combined in the way your lips met. Ryan coaxed your mouth open with his tongue and a small, satisfied noise tumbled from your mouth into his, your heart rate skyrocketing. When he pulled back to catch his breath, he kissed the tip of your nose and then your temple, feeling the slight, rhythmic beating of your heart against his lips. 

“We should go inside,” he suggested with a slight nod to the door. Tongue darting out to wet his lips, he gave your shoulders one last squeeze before sliding his arm from around your shoulders. “I have a craving, Y/N.” Your eyes widened in anticipation as Ryan paused, a slight smirk tugging at his lips. “For a root beer float.”

Laughter spilled from your mouth, Ryan following suit with chuckling of his own. “Ryan Brenner.” You attempted saying his name in a firm tone, but failed. “You’ll get that root beer float, but not without payment first. You owe me a song for being such a damn good guesser, if I remember correctly.” It was your turn to smirk back at him, raising your eyebrows in faux haughtiness. 

“Yes, ma’am,” he replied readily, nodding as he did so. “Guitar’s inside.” 

You stood from the swing and held out your hand. Ryan stood too, black notebook holding a memory in one hand,  and in sliding his fingers between yours, love held in the other. The two of you made the few steps to the door as you sang lines of the song he’d be trading for ice cream. 

“The Mississippi River, you know it’s deep and wide. I can stand right here, see my babe from the other side.” 

Your voice didn’t transport you to the riverbank in the way his did, but you knew Ryan would guide you in your journey through space and time just as soon as he held his guitar in his lap and slid on his fingerpick. As always, you were ready, imagining the flickering of fireflies reflecting off the river, anticipating the antiseptic taste of unlawful moonshine, and waiting for the magic to begin.

Can't find decent shower trim replacement

My piece of shit shower handle/temp trim piece needs to be replaced. I actually replaced it a couple years ago with a replacement piece from the local big box store, but it's already falling apart. I was hoping to replace it with something new and hopefully not a piece of shit, but every store in my area carries the exact same pieces of shit I already got.

So I thought I'd just risk it and buy something online, but I literally can't find anything. My shower valve is nothing more than a basic mixing valve with a moen 1200 cartridge for the control. So I go looking for a shower trim kit that with handle a moen cartridge... except everything I can find is for Moen Positemp valves. I even got so fed up trying to find something online I thought I'd go to the store and buy a complete kit (the ones with valve) and just not use the valve, but they're all kits for specialized valves like the positemp or delta multi-choice.

All I need is a basic tub spout and single lever handle, ideally one that doesn't require you to pull out to turn on, that isn't a Danco branded piece of shit buried in a Home Depot back aisle. Why is it so damn hard to find and where can I even find one?

Follow and encourage the use of window opening to let fresh air instead of pumping the air conditioner. Get in a few low-maintenance plants-these plants help keep the air clean & purified! Grab advantage of energy efficient lighting & encourage the use of motion sensor lighting so lights don’t get left on.

BREAK ROOM SUPPLIES

Office break rooms items vary from company to company. Paper plates & plastic utensils are almost a break room staple. So, start bringing your own cutlery & reusable items to eat lunch with. If you need to buy, choose a compostable brand of items that will compost down in the landfill.

ELIMINATE THE KEURIG & SINGLE BREW COFFEE SYSTEMS

Yes, of course- we know they are quick & easy, but in the big picture, these single-serving coffee pods aren’t eco-friendly in any way. Along with all the packaging from the box it comes in, to the actual pod of coffee, only 1 part of the coffee pod is recyclable, and to do so, you have to effectively deconstruct the pod and remove the recyclable part and toss the rest in the garbage. A Good thing is they do make reusable coffee pods for these machines – this could be a good present for employees to show them that you are serious on taking your stand being more environmentally friendly. The best point about the reusable ones is that you can fill it with whatever coffee you like!

COMPOST

Composting things like paper towels & food waste can help reduce unnecessary landfill waste. Providing a place to compost items like food, paper towels, and coffee grinds can encourage the motivation to keep a green lifestyle outside of the workplace as well.

CONSERVE YOUR COMPUTER’S ENERGY

A computer is mandatory for many people with a desk job. It is estimated that people waste over $1 billion in electricity every year just in computer use. In order to help conserve energy from your work computers, you can invest in an energy-saving computer, monitor, or printer. In fact, these are usually labeled with an Energy Star label. You can also adjust your energy saving settings, so your monitors & display sleep & turns off after a certain amount of time of not being in use. Program your computer to sleep mode when you are away from it for short periods of time and turn off your computer when it’s not in use – like leaving work!

RECYCLE!!

You can find so many items in your office workplace that you can recycle! If you don’t have one at the workplace– start your own and encourage others to follow. Water bottles, paper, soda cans, etc. You can designate a small recycle receptacle by your desk, better yet, talk to upper management about putting one in the break room if your workplace doesn’t have one yet.

TRAVEL GREEN

Traveling green can and will reduce carbon dioxide gases that are released into the air that contribute to greenhouse gases. Rideshare or Join a carpool or take public transit. If you live close enough to a workplace, get exercise and ride your bike or walk to work.  See if you can work from home a few days a week if your workplace allows it. Which in turn will reduce your carbon footprint, along with gas cost?

EATING GREEN

The best and charging up time of the day is usually lunch break! By carrying your own lunch to work, you can save a good amount of money by not going out to eat.

*Get your lunch in a reusable bag or box and if you bring it in a paper or plastic bag – recycle it!

*Use food containers & utensils that can be washed again

*Recycle your wallet soda cans, water bottles, and aluminum foil

*Bring your own reusable water or coffee bottle

GET OTHERS INVOLVED

Chat it up! Keep yourself involved in your green efforts and encourage others to do so as well.  Plan and set up a carpool calendar, contribute your thoughts and actions on getting your workplace to recycle, or recycle better!

Minor spoiler alert for Game of Thrones Season 4 (just in case you’re significantly behind and actually care).

Plumbing issues. My worst nightmare. I live in constant fear of flooding or backups. Surprisingly, I can do a few minor repairs. Not quickly mind you — but I can complete them — eventually. For example, I went to change out a fill valve and a flapper in the toilet reservoir tank a couple of years ago, and it took me 5 days to finish it — about 4 days, 23 hours, and 40 minutes longer than it should have. And that was a relatively easy task. I guess I’m missing a handyman gene — I’m always worried about screwing something up, so I tend to be overly cautious. Plus, any moderately complex task is beyond me. Trust me, I discovered it the hard way during my highly ambitious, though short-lived, handyman phase.

My woes begin

My problems started one day when one of my toilets started rocking anytime someone sat on it (That someone being the Houseguest as the toilet in question was in her bathroom). Since there was no water leaking out of its base, I didn’t really worry about it because, well, the toilet in my bathroom didn’t rock. But the Houseguest found the motion disconcerting, so I told her I’d look into fixing it. Eventually. (Which was a couple of weeks later.)

When I finally got around to trying to diagnose and solve the problem, I Googled some suggested fixes. The simplest was to use toilet shims to level it. These were small, plastic wedges I bought at Home Depot. I pushed them into the gap between the toilet and the floor, hoping that would stabilize it and solve the problem — and watched them promptly disappear. Huh, that was a little unexpected — and alarming. And they had zero effect. The toilet still thought it was a rocking horse. Not good. Not good at all.

Get a handyman?

At that point, I thought about hiring a handyman. Turns out, I’d twice given a ride on Lyft to a former plumber who now works in the plumbing section of Lowes. He did side jobs and gave me his card. He would have been a lot cheaper than a plumbing company. However, three things gave me pause.

The Houseguest wanted to know why he was working at Lowes and was no longer a full-time plumber (Maybe retired? I dunno).

I’ve gone with cheap alternatives before — friends or friends of friends — and let’s say I didn’t always get the desired outcome. Things get awkward at that point.

He was hammered at three o’clock on a Tuesday the second time I gave him a ride — the thought of him repairing my toilet while potentially drunk was not appealing.

Even though the savings tempted me, I opted not to roll the dice on him.

Back to the Internet

I went back to Google, and after much research, I determined the wax ring that forms a seal between the toilet and the pipe probably needed replacing. So I YouTubed how to replace a wax ring.

I have to admit, the process of removing a toilet was unnerving. I mean what can go wrong, right? The possibilities left me in a cold sweat. Still, I ignored all my doubting friends on Facebook who urged me to hire a plumber, and I forged ahead and bought the supplies. Then I sat there for another week dwelling on everything that could go wrong, and I watched the videos again to reassure myself. My worst-case scenario was if the wax ring wasn’t the problem, but instead, I had a broken flange. No way I could fix that.

The Houseguest was worried that if I started this project and were unsuccessful, she’d end up with an open pipe to the sewer and no functioning toilet. Granted, a genuine fear. She let me know in no uncertain terms that if we faced a cockroach armageddon, there would be hell to pay. She offered to shell out the cash for a real plumber, but I told her I was on the case and not to waste her money. I’d figure it out. The look she gave me was not one of confidence.

Taking a deep breath, when I wrestled the toilet free and moved it, the flange was intact, much to my relief. This may shock a few people, but I did manage to change the wax ring and replace the toilet and bolt it back down without cracking the porcelain. Success! I even recovered the shims. Huzzah!

Except, after all that effort, the toilet still rocked.

As long as no one needs to use the toilet, we’ll be okay.

Hoping against hope, I tried using the shims but, yet again, they disappeared out of sight.

Goddamn it.

The only consolation was at least the toilet still wasn’t leaking. So, as far as I could tell, the wax ring was not the culprit. But I still had no idea why the toilet was rocking. I told the Houseguest to hang tight, and I’d get a plumber on the case — after I paid a couple of bills down. Which was going to take a while…

If it’s not one thing, it’s another

Anyway, the months went by with only the occasional grumble from the Houseguest. My friend Andréa worried a sudden wave of sewage would sweep the Houseguest away one day, but the toilet sat there like a dormant Mount Vesuvius, biding its time.

During this period, the sink in the Houseguest’s bathroom started dripping — it was slow at first, but over time it picked up the tempo tap – tap – tap. Hearing it day after day became psychological torture. It was the Universe telling me my house was a victim of entropy (which is not surprising since it was built in 1981).

I Youtubed sink repairs, but when I remodeled that bathroom six years ago, the contractor put in some fancy faucets, and I couldn’t figure out how to fix it. So, I added it to the list of things my imaginary plumber would theoretically fix at some undetermined point down the road.

Can things get worse? What do you think?

Then one day, the Houseguest called me in a panic. There was a large puddle of water — but not in her bathroom. No, it was under the kitchen sink. Oh geezus. Instant alarm set in. It turned out the garbage disposal was leaking water out of the bottom. So we stopped using the left side of the double sink. However, it still kind of leaked when we used the right sink (which shares the same pipe) if we ran the water too fast.

So back to Youtube I went and watched garbage disposal repair videos. From what I could deduce, it looked like my disposal had corroded and I would need to replace it. That gave me pause as it seemed more complex than the other things I’d already failed at. This time there were wires to connect.  If a project involves electricity, I want no part of it. I’d already shocked the shit out of myself back in the mid-’90s trying to fix a beard trimmer (Temporarily burned off my damn thumbprint). I still suffer PTSD from it, so I was less than keen to add running water into the equation.

Okay, which wire should I not touch?

Damn it. I was finally going to have to call a plumber.

But I didn’t. Instead, I stuck a small plastic tub under the leaky garbage disposal and told the Houseguest to ease up on the water flow. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried rinsing dishes with the water that dribbles from a melting icicle, but that’s what we had to reduce the water flow in the kitchen sink to avoid flooding. It was an incredibly inconvenient way to wash dishes. After a couple more weeks of that, I’d had enough. I called a plumbing company, and a few days later, they sent a fellow over. My hope was I could get this all taken care of for a couple of hundred bucks. Call me an optimist.

A shadow darkens my door

The morning the plumber showed up, when I opened the door after his knock, I almost slammed it in his face. I don’t know if any of you are Game of Thrones fans, but in the show, there is a psychopathic character nicknamed The Mountain that Rides (played by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who has held the title of the world’s strongest man). A savage, bearded knight, The Mountain is a veritable giant of a warrior who is capable of crushing an enemy’s skull with his hands (which he did in Season 4). There, standing on my doorstep, was a slightly tinier version of The Mountain — in other words, still a giant human being — sporting a beard and muscles.

Now imagine him holding a wrench instead of a giant sword.

The Mini-Mountain set about his tasks. When I explained the toilet situation and my failed remedies, his brow creased with concern. He told me it would be $200 to pop the toilet off and replace it, and depending on what he found, there could be thousands of more dollars involved if he had to jackhammer the floor up and reposition the pipe. It was very sobering. Anyway, he decided to tackle the sink and the garbage disposal first.

Flirting with danger

The problems started right away because it’s my house and why wouldn’t they? First, the fancy faucet required some expensive cartridge ($125) and he didn’t have one on hand, so he had to go to Home Depot. Gone for half an hour, he called to tell me the store didn’t have the cartridge — apparently, my contractor had bought a faucet that used a rarer cartridge, so the Mini-Mountain had to go to a plumbing supply store.

When he got back, he swapped out the cartridge. Ready to tackle the disposal, he went to turn off the water at the street and disappeared for ten minutes. Curious, I stepped out the front door to find out what was going on. He told me he couldn’t shut off the main valve. It wouldn’t budge — he had the wrong tool, so he had called the city to send a worker out. I could sense his frustration.

I stepped back into the house. The Houseguest was sitting on the couch watching TV and asked for an update. I explained we’d hit a snag and she wanted to know why a strapping fellow like the Mini-Mountain couldn’t turn a valve.

“He told me his tool is too small.”

I wasn’t trying to be funny, but the Houseguest snorted a repressed laugh.

“Did you just say — he has a small tool?” she asked, full of mirth.

Wiener humor is generally not part of her comedic repertoire, but of course, she chose that moment to regress to junior high. I could hear the Mini-Mountain crunching around in the crushed gravel five feet from my front door.

I hissed at her to shut it, jerking my thumb back over my shoulder.

“Are you trying to get me killed?”

In his frustrated state, I was afraid the Mini-Mountain might snap at her mockery. In most cases, when a woman riles up a large guy, it’s her innocent guy friend or significant other who becomes the punching bag. Moreover, if the Mini-Mountain got started, it wouldn’t take much punching at all to make me very unhappy. He looked like he could crush me with one thumb. I kept envisioning Oberyn Martell’s horrific ending on Game of Thrones.

Under pressure

While we were waiting for the city worker, I mentioned that the guy who installed my water heater had thought that the water pressure to my house was too high. The Mini-Mountain grabbed a pressure gauge and checked it and became instantly alarmed. The pounds per square inch should have been between 50 to 60. The water pressure for my house? 100 psi. My house was the equivalent of an old man with high blood pressure who was ready to stroke out at any moment. The Mini-Mountain told me of all the things wrong with my plumbing, the water pressure concerned him the most.

So, you’re saying it’s a little high? Is that a problem?

He pointed out the pipe leading into my house had an old valve system and said he’d need to cut the pipe out and install a new one with a pressure regulator. All the day’s work would cost me $1,009.35 — assuming he didn’t discover unexpected complications once he removed the toilet. At this point, as much as that number depressed me, I just wanted to avoid a plumbing disaster, so I told him to add the pressure regulator installation to the work order.

Pipe problems

Once the city worker had done his thing and left, the Mini-Mountain got to work. He re-plumbed the kitchen sink and set to work outside. Finally, we were making some headway — or so I thought.

The Mini-Mountain cut out the old pipe and then began soldering in bright, shiny copper piping. He had to leave at one point to go to the store again because he was missing something. When he returned, he began soldering again. Through the open front door, I could hear the steady jet of flame from his torch that kept going and going and going. Then it stopped. Then it started again and kept going and going and going. This went on for a while, which seemed odd. After an eternity, he came back in and described the trouble. It had something to do with the copper pipe, moist ground, and electrolysis. Anyway, it had been inhibiting his attempt to solder part of the pipe, but he eventually got it.

On to the main event

Finally, he was ready to tackle the toilet. Once he had removed it, he quickly diagnosed the problem. Someone had chipped the tile too far away from the flange — the back of the toilet base had nothing to rest on and when someone sat down, the toilet rocked back. When the contractor remodeled that bathroom, his plumber must of half-assed the job (no pun intended) or whatever temporary measure he’d used had failed — I’d never noticed it before because I didn’t use that toilet.

The good news was it was a solvable problem and wouldn’t require massive amounts of work. The bad news? The Mini-Mountain needed to add concrete to give the back of the toilet base something to rest on. That would cost an additional $300, and late to his next appointment, The Mini-Mountain informed me he couldn’t do it that day. He could come back in three days. However, he said I could save money if I knew how to work with concrete. I told him didn’t, but I could probably Youtube it. He said if I did the concrete, he could come back and reset the toilet, or he could leave me the wax ring, and I could do it.

Before he left, he turned the water to the house back on. We heard running water, and alarmed, we hurried around trying to find it. Luckily, it was the front toilet. The fill valve had chosen that exact moment to malfunction. I couldn’t believe it. It had acted up once before but only for one flush. Now it kept running. The Mini-Mountain fiddled with it and said he would need to replace it, but he didn’t have time to do it. Accepting the fact the plumbing gods had it in for me, I told him not to sweat it. So, he collected his tools, I paid him, and he left.

My house had sent the Mini-Mountain fleeing into the evening twilight.

I stood in the back bathroom contemplating the disarray. One thousand, nine dollars and thirty-five cents later and my toilet, the one problem I really wanted to solve, was sitting in the middle of the floor. And now the other one needed fixing. What had I done to deserve this?

Less than half-an-hour later, I was up at Home Depot buying plumbing parts and concrete. It just didn’t seem right.

So I Youtubed how to lay concrete around a flange and I’m glad I did because I could have caused a lot of inconvenient problems. The next day, Saturday, I used cardboard and tape to block off the concrete from getting into areas I didn’t want it to and was about to get to work when my buddy James the Annoyer (the one who talks through movies) stopped by to visit. He has worked with concrete professionally, so I let him take over.

Next day, after the concrete had cured, I replaced the toilet and hooked it up. It no longer rocked! Halleluja! And it flushed with no leaking! Mission accomplished.

Epilogue

Of course, that’s not the end of the story because, with me, it never is. See, when I want to water the few surviving plants in my yard, I have to manually turn my sprinklers on because my automated control system is malfunctioning. When I turned it on three days after the Mini-Mountain’s visit, the old pipe that connects with the new pipe he installed began gushing water. The bushes in my front yard are barely hanging on, so if I didn’t get it fixed, they were doomed. So I called the plumbing company and said their guy must have damaged the pipe while working on it. They said they’d send a plumber over in a couple of days.

I have terrible luck.

I really hoped it wasn’t the Mini-Mountain — I didn’t want him thinking I’d ratted him out to his boss or implied he was incompetent.

Bright and early Monday morning, my doorbell rang, and there was the Mini-Mountain towering over me. Despite my apprehension, he was cordial and set to work. After some preliminary excavation, he commented someone had repaired the old pipe before (they had), which I assumed was the set up for charging me an arm and a leg. Half an hour later, I had a shiny new copper pipe. The Mini-Mountain shook my hand with his giant mitt and then was on his way with no charge for his labor or materials.

I guess it’s true what they say — never judge a book by its cover. Even if it can kill you with its thumb.

Fear of an Exploding Toilet Minor spoiler alert for Game of Thrones Season 4 (just in case you're significantly behind and actually care).

alright. so today was pretty chill. I woke up to my alarm at 11:30, which I intentionally set 15 minutes earlier than I normally would’ve because it was going to be 80 degrees out and I knew I had to lug my giant suitcase in from our back porch area (it’s not really a porch) and dig through it until I could find a tank top and some shorts. luckily it didn’t take me very long to do so, so I just had some breakfast and chilled out for a bit. I opted to walk again because the bus options were like 12:09 and 12:38, which obviously neither work for me to arrive at 12:30. I loosely timed it today and it took about 15 minutes to walk there, so not bad (at least when you’re used to living in a city without a car and walking everywhere). PT session was good, I think I’m gonna have to tell the guy that the exercises he has me doing right now are too easy haha because he’s like “okay do 30 bridges’ when at the other place I’d moved up to doing single leg bridges with a 15 pound weight on my chest, so I could do 30 normal ones in my sleep lol. but other than that it was good, I like it there, it’s a bit smaller than the other place but everyone is very friendly and cordial, so that’s good. Got out of there are 2, walked home, had some lunch and tried to get some studying done. I did the remaining two secured transactions lecture videos from the bar website back to back, so I could get the rest of that info into my brain, then I downloaded an outline from outline depot, which I was slightly irritated about because none of the outlines I uploaded had been reviewed yet, meaning I didn’t get a credit for them, so I ended up having to shell out $20 for the outline (which, like I said last time, is really a fair price compared to other options, it’s just annoying when you know you could’ve gotten it for free). I can’t really blame them though, it’s finals time and I’m sure they have a ton of people like me trying to submit outlines last minute so they have a ton to go through. I had decided I wanted to make vanilla pudding and an apple crisp, the pudding to use the two egg yolks I had in my fridge that were left over from me making the meringues the other day, and for some reason I just wanted apple crisp. the pudding was simple enough, milk, sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks, vanilla and butter (and a few other minor things) and that all came together quite nicely. After that I went back to my computer and made a table of contents sheet for the outline so I don’t have to waste time flipping through it trying to find stuff during the test (or at least have to waste less time doing so). I had gotten a new ink cartridge from amazon, so I went ahead and stuck that in there, then printed the outline. I decided to print my notes too, just because it’s better to have more information, even if they’re pretty sparse because I didn’t quite pay attention for most of the class. So I printed all that a hole punched it so it’s ready to go in my binder. I then wanted to make the apple crisp. I had three granny smith apples in my fridge, so I found a recipe that could work with that. Peeled and sliced the apples, made the crumb topping (which turned out super good, not entirely sure why, but it was heavenly) made a flour/butter/brown sugar mixture to coat the apples in, then stick it all in the pan and put it in the oven. It was ready around 6:45, perfect timing for me to get some and go watch The Flash. apple crisp is obviously a solid dinner choice. As far as The Flash goes, well, it was definitely not my favorite episode, by a long shot. the whole council of Wells thing is a great example of just because you can doesn’t mean you should (which is what I tweeted while watching it), it’s just so overdone at this point and I really don’t want to see Tom Cavanagh playing any more ridiculous versions of the character. so that was not my favorite. I liked the stuff with Iris getting back to being a journalist FINALLY (we’ve only been asking for that for like, 2 seasons now), but I can’t say I was too into the whole Amunet Black storyline, I just didn’t really care about her, and the entire goal they were aiming towards was kind of nebulous and the stakes weren’t really there. Not sure what to make about the Caitlin/Killer Frost storyline at this point, I am very much against character attacks on both Iris and Caitlin, especially when it’s because of a ship, and I’ve seen some WA shippers attacking Caitlin for being selfish, and I feel like, at the very least, that is lacking in empathy. I very much ship WA and love them together, but I don’t harbor any ill will against Caitlin, a fictional character, who shouldn’t be demonized because some people ship her with Barry. But anyway. Not sure how I feel about that whole thing and where they’re going with that. When that was over I switched over to Rise, which was a very intriguing episode. First off, I have to say I kinda hope Lilette’s mom gets arrested for child neglect, because she is very much guilty of it at the moment. like, you can’t just walk out and leave your teenager alone for days, doing nothing to take care of them during that time, I don’t care what you’re going through or what happened between you, you’re a fucking adult and a parent, you don’t get to just storm off and leave your kid alone. So obviously that bothered me a bit, for reasons that I would think are pretty apparent at this part. The whole plot about cleaning up the show I found to be rather amusing, because to cut all the things they wanted to there would like, be nothing left in the show lol. All of it is so essential to the characters, and hearing them sing “YEAH YOU’RE HOSED ALRIGHT” was really fucking amusing, I was legit laughing at that. Being that next week is the season finale and the night of the show, it’s pretty obvious that they’re gonna end up saying fuck it and do the correct version of the show, though I’m sure that will have repercussions. The storyline about Maashous gave me a lot of feelings (again, for obvious reasons) and I hope they play that out in a way that is doing justice to the source material and the many real children who end up in these situations. When that was over I switched over to Amazon Prime Video and watched a few episodes of The Good Place before starting to get ready for bed. At some point during the day, I don’t remember when, I checked my email to find one from the tech company I had done the two phone interviews for, stating the classic “thank you for applying to this position, we’ve decided to go another way” rejection letter style. I was honestly somewhat relieved, because if I ended up there I was *very* concerned that if I got it I was going to end up hating the job and just being miserable. Of course though, that knocks out one of my Illinois prospects, leaving the only active one to be the DV clinic, which isn’t exactly a job prospect, but I’m really hoping if I just knock everyone’s socks off I can turn it into one. Whether I stay here or not is still going to end up turning on what happens with the NYC job, which I should be hearing from any time now, but it does make it somewhat harder to justify staying in Illinois on the basis of having more prospects and opportunities here when one of those is gone. At the same time though, job prospects in New York would also be quite limited, there really aren’t any active possibilities, the only somewhat active one would be interning at the county attorneys office (they do the job the ASA’s do here in child welfare court) unpaid until I get officially sworn in as an attorney in November/December, then *maybe* they’ll hire me, as they are currently stating they’re only looking for licensed attorneys for their positions. I’m kinda disappointed I didn’t hear back from any of the other jobs I sent all those applications to, mostly because I felt like a lot of them were very strong and would give me a good shot at the job, but I guess being straight out of law school is just not something they’re looking for right now. So yeah. that was a massive tangent. I still have mixed feelings about the NYC job, because I don’t want to leave Chicago, but I want that job, and there’s not (currently at least) any options for that job here, and who knows when OPG will lift their hiring freeze, it’s already been in place for over a year, so hedging my bets on that it’ll be lifted soon doesn’t seem like a good decision. Sigh. I keep praying about all of it and saying if you want me to go to New York then make this job happen and I will, if not don’t make it happen and I’ll stay here, so I’m hoping that job with be somewhat of a sign of what I should do. I am somewhat of the opinion that “God’s Plan” for our lives isn’t one set path, that we have free will to make decisions, and (as long as it’s a good decision) He will find a way to bless the path we take. That idea was first told to me by one of my theology professors in college, after I went to her with a very broken heart after certain events, and was broken up about what was meant to be and who I was meant to end up with. She said there was a book, I don't remember the exact name, but something along the lines of “Good news for the anxious Christian” basically communicating the idea that God will find a way to bless whatever positive decisions we make, and that really stuck with me. Sadly enough, the next semester, that professor happened to be one of “The 8″ that had been terminated by the school in the incident that led to the whole “Support the 8″ campaign where basically the entire undergrad study body was infuriated and the administration was very, very shook. So when they were collecting letters I wrote one supporting her along with the one I wrote for Derek (theatre professor that was the heart and soul of the undergrad program who they carelessly fired) and emailed her to let her know I had done so, she was out on maternity leave at the time (which of course makes it that much worse that they fired her). I just wanted her to know that the students were actively supporting her, and she responded very thankfully.
