calling all desi folks !
hello there ! i have been in the rp community for over a decade now on various platforms but it has always been hard to come across fellow desis to write with .
do you want to scream over your favorite ships like rahul - anjali from k3g or build up an alternate world to accomodate the chemistry that was between abhimanyu - rohan in soty ? do you want to talk about latest movies and old nostalgic ones ? across most major indian languages film industries ( telugu · tamil · hindi · kannada · malayalam ) movies , faceclaims and ship dynamics , look no further !
if you're a desi reading this and if you roleplay over at discord or are interested in doing so , like this post or send me a dm !! i would love nothing more than to connect with my fellow desi rp partners !!
full disclosure : admin is 23 and looking to write mostly queer desi ships with folks who are 20+ and desi ! minors do NOT interact .
i don't write as real persons or celebrities , i use faceclaims for original characters instead . a new character will be created for each rp plot / partner . plotting and headcanons are something i really enjoy so that would be fun to focus on as well !
smut can be written but it's a case - by - case basis on who and what i am comfortable with , but otherwise , fade - to - black is the norm . limits and triggers are respected so i request the same of you .
though , if you're simply looking to write females / sub characters only or wanting to use my male characters , then i am not the rp partner for you .
currently looking for m x m ships and plots , but others as well ! can't wait to connect with y'all !
me writing this post to gather us desi in rpc :
Tumblr media
some canon pairings i am open to writing are :
rambheem ( rrr )   devadas ( 2018 )   abhirohan ( student of the year )   vandhiyamozhi ( ponniyin selvan )   devaradha / varadeva ( salaar )   karjay ( rang de basanti )   chittijai : jairava : dhruya ( charak ships )   rolexanbu ( vikram )   johndas ( master )   vikramvedha ( 2017 )
and a whole long damn variety of cross - movie and cross - industry pairings and ships !
for example :   vijay deverakonda x adivi sesh ,   thala ajith x karthi ,   nani x rana daggubati ,   unni mukundan x adivi sesh ,   dhanush x sivakarthikeyan ,   vijay thalapathy x arjun das ,   suriya x nani ,   jr ntr x jayam ravi ,   shah rukh khan x r madhavan ,   vijay thalapathy x surya ,   karthi x akkineni nagarjuna ,   prabhas x jayam ravi ,   ram charan x suriya   and many more !
P.S. this is NOT a writing call for desi-only writers !! SO non-desi besties who are into desi cinema can reach out too pls 💕 !

Rewatching Kaithi coz my mom hasn't seen it yet.
Honestly, I need to see Arjun Das acting opposite Vijay again because they were so awesome in Master. And of course my blorbo Karthi as the indomitable Dilli 🥹 I want to see them in the Lokiverse 🙏
But just seeing Anbu and Rolex interact in Vikram was enough to send me to nirvana. Imagine seeing Suriya as Rolex, Arjun Das as Anbu, Karthi as Dilli, and Vijay as Leo interacting in one scene 🥹🥹🥹🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really like the fact that Arjun Das and Suriya apparently are the same height. They're both so tough but also oh so cuuuuute.
Tumblr media
(I really can't wait for Leo 🦁 I wonder if this shot will be in the movie but probably not)

Okay, review of Ponniyin Selvan 2 incoming (whether you like it or not) (and again, this is my personal opinion about the movie so please don’t kill me if you don’t agree).
I don’t know what to say. I really don’t. *proceeds to write essay*
Is it a good movie? Yes, hell yes, 100%
But will I be religiously rewatching this like I did part one? Maybe not.
Part 2 is a different vibe than part one. Like a complete script flip. It's a different movie (I guess one can figure that out from how different the album of the second movie is to the first). The drama (more like angst, ngl) amongst the characters is intensified while the story just seems to be something running in the background. We learn a lot more about some of the characters-- we see a different side to them: let it be the vulnerable side of Nandini or a more humanized form of Adhitha. Some of the prominent questions from part 1 are answered in part 2 (point to note: we are given the backstory of adhita and nandini which I think is a fantastic addition) but yeah I still don’t really know how to clearly explain this movie. It’s like one of those pieces of art that you have to see to cherish, to understand why people are going crazy about it.
There are moments that just make you want to go “what the actual hell” but there are others where you’re just sitting there, with your mouth wide open and/or tears welling up in your eyes. And it does not help that oftentimes this movie becomes a pendulum between these feelings.
The acting and the actors are a saving grace. Everyone is PERFECTLY cast and the scenes are such that even if there is a small hiccup, it's going to look like a big joke. The chemistry the cast has with each other is insane. Off the charts. (and I'm coining this right now, Chiyan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, and Karthi are going to SWEEP all the awards). The scenes between the lovers, let it be kundavai and vanthiyadevan or nandini and adhitha is some of the best acting I have seen.
The music is also another savior in disguise. Let it be the first 10 minutes of the movie with the three songs back to back, or let it be using Veera Raja Veera on three separate occasions to highlight three different moments in the movie-- Rahman really killed it with this one (although I am a bit disappointed that NONE of the songs were used in their entirety— someone pull the editor out of the editing room asap).
The cinematography? *chefs kiss* Give Ravi Varman a National Award right now.
I think the most disappointing aspect for me is that Mani sir was never really given the chance to fully explore the characters, the themes, the subplots, or just the book in general. Don’t get me wrong, this is one of the most genuine book-to-movie adaptations I’ve seen and although Mani Ratnam was insistent that Ponniyin Selvan is something that truly deserves to be on the big screen, I think it would’ve worked absolute wonders if it were a series. I would totally not be opposed to a director's cut (trust me I will watch it even if it ends up being a seven-hour movie) if it gives us an opportunity to see Mani sir's strengths and the usual magic in his other films shine through more because the restriction of time is taken out.

Ever since I saw Ponniyin Selvan, I’ve been on a quest to watch many Tamil movies, since I think the last Tamil film I watched before the PS saga was Kandukondain Kandukondain (that was at a time when I was watching Jane Austen adaptations non-stop!) I’ve been choosing in a rather erratic way from films that either were directed by Mani Ratnam or starred Trisha, Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bacchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi or Jeyaram. (As far as I’m aware, neither Aishwarya Lakshmi nor Shobhita Dhulipala have acted in other Tamil movies? I do have Shobhita’s Prime show to watch though.)
The other actors whose movies I’m also watching are Vijay Sethupathi and Samantha Prabhu because I saw their acting in “Farzi” and “The Family Man” (both Hindi-language OTT series directed and produced by two Telugu gentlemen so really very all-India!) After I watched Thani Oruvan, I added Nayanthara and Aravind Swamy to the list so … basically, I’m set for like the next 20 years ;)
Sometimes I get lucky and two of the actors are in THE SAME MOVIE. Which brings me to the fact that I watched “Unnakum Ennakum” last night, and my goodness, Arulmozhi Varman and Kundavai Devi were SUCH BABIES in this film. (Also, much closer to the ages of their characters in Kalki’s novel - Arulmozhi Varman is 19 and Kundavai is 21, and Aditha Karikalan is 25 … so yeah.) This movie came out in 2006 so I think Trisha was 23-24 and Ravi was about 25-26?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Farming is HARD WORK, y’all, but this boy was willing to collect cow dung in his bare hands for the sake of Trisha. And who wouldn’t! (Vandiyadevan would die for her, but would he plow and plant rice and milk cows? Hmm?)
Tumblr media
This picture is for contrast! They’re still beautiful, but definitely not playing 19-21 year olds any more :)

SO, here are my observations from ponniyin selvan.
-Vikram perfectly fit the role of Aditha Karikalan as a warrior who has been through a lot of struggle and has a lot of anger inside of him.
-I was a little skeptical about jayam ravi as arunmozhi before watching the film but boy was I wrong. I mean there's such a difference between Aditha and Arunmozhi as people. Arunmozhi Varman is a little more level headed and calm.
-Don't even know where to begin. I think he's easily everybody's favorite in the film. Karthi has done the rold really well. Like vanthiyadevan is charming and witty and soo likable. His journey and his scenes with nambi(jayaram) was like just😭.
- Jayaram was hilarious. Loved him in the film😭
-Vanthiyadevan and semba(his horse) 😍
-With the very little screen time that Kundavai was given, I think who she was as a person was satisfactorily conveyed. Her intelligence. And Oh my god her beauty. Anddd the bgm that plays when vanthiyadevan and kundavai meet is just🤌😩
-Another little observation I made is that rahman's role as maduranthakan was also good. Like from looking at him, just the way he is and how he behaves, I see a man who wants power and hides behind other people to fight for him. Totally gave me a weak man vibe.
-My god Nandhini though. I understood and noticed the little nuances in her character so much better the second time. She's cunning, manipulative and so damn smart. She's got her husband just wrapped around her little finger. There's this scene where we're shown her cunning side for the first time. Might be insignificant but it really stuck with me. It's when she meets vanthiyadevan in her palace. She subtly let's him know that he could take his kingdom back if he wanted. Like it shows her cunning mind. And the fact that she's so calm and her eyes say so much, it all just amplifies her complexities. Aishwarya Rai oh my god.
-I loved how the movie was so plot driven. Like period films usually are more about entertainment. This wasn't like that. It was about the characters and the plot. Like you really have to pay attention. It's one of those movies that you understand better as you watch it again and again.

kapil sharma PS-1 game
(again, not fully fluent in hindi here, but i did my best)
the game doesn't seem to be completely shown in any one video, so i've used two.
this video from [2:24] to [8:11]
youtube
[2:24]
kapil: i will start with trisha. trisha, you come first.
trisha: oh, it's on me, now.
kapil: okay, ready? guys, no cheating…music!
(first phrase) "public mein thukhega nahin, pushpa jhukhega nahin"
(i'm not exactly sure what 'thukhega' means, but i believe this means something like, 'in public, [he] will not be knocked down; pushpa will not bow down'. pushpa is an allu arjun character who said the iconic line, 'pushpa will not bow down'.)
trisha to sobhita: "public mein thukhega nahin"
sobhita: "baby ko bass pasand hai" (a popular song, means that 'baby likes bass')
trisha: fail!
sobhita: 'jingad jingad' is happening in these [headphones]; (i assume this just means the song is playing very energetically and loudly that it's distracting her)
trisha: i'll forget! "public"
sobhita: "baby"
trisha: "public ko thukhega nahin"
sobhita: kuch nahi aati? (means 'you don't know anything'?)
[trisha repeats]
sobhita: "public ko tootne ka nahin" (means something like 'there's nothing to break for the public'? it sounds incomplete)
[when sobhita is still confused, trisha repeats, imitates a bike/autorikshaw that makes a tuk-tuk sound]
sobhita: "daudne ka?" (something like 'to run')
trisha: i give up on her!
kapil: whatever you are getting, you please [pass it on].
sobhita: okay, one last time!
[trisha says the line again]
vikram: it's just one line, right?
archana: it's two, it's two.
sobhita: "public ko rukega nahin" (something about 'will not stop the public")
[something clicks] "jhukhega nahin!"
[makes the iconic 'pushpa' gesture]
but "public ko jhukhega nahin?" (confused, because that's not the pushpa movie line)
[turns to vikram]
trisha: but it's not over!
sobhita to vikram: (i am not even attempting to translate that mess; i think it's clear enough)
kapil: don't know what the line will become going forward!
vikram to karthi: "public ko jhuk"
karthi: "juice" aa?
vikram: "public ko jhuk nahin nahin" (something like 'for public bow no no')
[vikram turns back to sobhita, another mess, vikram is frustrated by now]
[karthi tries to listen when vikram speaks]
vikram: you're not supposed to listen! [repeats the phrase he understood]
karthi: is this hindi? avvalavu thaan? (means 'is that all?' in tamil)
[vikram repeats]
[karthi mouths something to jayam]
jayam: "puppet"?
karthi: not "puppet", da; "public"
jayam: "puppet"
karthi: "ko"
jayam: "no"
karthi: "jhuk"
jayam: "truth"
karthi: "nahin, nahin"
jayam: "nahin, nahin"
[very confused]
jayam: "puppet truth nahin"?
[laughter]
trisha: rubbish! all of you guys spoke rubbish!
vikram and karthi: you spoke correctly?
trisha: yeah, i said the right thing
vikram: say, say, what is it?
[trisha says the line]
sobhita: oh, so i combined them!
[kapil reveals the line]
[they're getting ready to do the next round, trisha and sobhita switch places, then the crew alerts kapil about a battery missing in trisha's headphones; so kapil's like "oh, so that's how you understood the line so quickly! there wasn't a battery in your headphones! i was thinking trisha's ears are so sharp that she could catch the line even over this loud music!"]
ends at [8:11] in this video.
-
2. this video (this seems to be a kind of edit video, so please be warned that the volume goes up when someone says something funny. i apologize, i couldn't find a better one anywhere)
youtube
kapil: very small line
all: okay!
kapil: okay, ready guys? ready? [to trisha] you're not supposed to look! you have to look straight.
(second phrase) "bandar ne pehna diaper, baahubali ho gaya hyper"
(this means that "the monkey wore a diaper, baahubali became hyper"; i honestly don't know where he's getting these)
[audience laughs, and the others see the reaction to the line]
karthi: already we are laughing now
vikram: ayyayyo! (means 'oh no!')
[kapil repeats the line]
sobhita to trisha: "bandar ke baraat mein" (means 'in the marriage procession of the monkey')
trisha: what?!
sobhita: "bhaloo aaya hai"? (means 'the bear has come')
trisha: "bandar ke baraat mein bhaloo aaya hai" ('the bear has come to the monkey's wedding procession')
[trisha repeats the line to vikram]
vikram to karthi: "bandar ki balaat mein baaru ki aaya hai" ('balaat' means like 'forcibly', 'baaru' doesn't mean anything as far as i can tell; this essentially makes no sense)
[vikram repeats]
karthi to jayam: "band ki baat mein"? "bandar ki baat mein" (means 'in the matter of the monkey')
jayam: "mandir ki balaat"? ('mandir' means 'temple') one more time, slow, slow
[karthi repeats, what jayam gets is "mandir ke baat mein, ballu aaya hai"]
kapil to sobhita: so what did you say, that the bear will come for the monkey's wedding?
sobhita: was that it?
kapil: no, it wasn't [reveals the original line]
[2:28]
kapil: okay, we'll play one more
(third phrase) "kutta kidhar gaya, find it; yenna rascala, mind it!"
(this means, 'where did the dog go? find it; hey rascal, mind it!" the phrase 'yenna rascala, mind it!' is from the movie 'om shanti om' where shahrukh khan does a parody of a south indian actor)
sobhita: "kutta ki nahin hai wife" (something like 'the dog doesn't have a wife')
[kapil repeats]
sobhita: "kutta ki nahin hai wife, lekin sabse achhe hai salman bhai" (means 'the dog doesn't have a wife, but salman bhai is the best'; which could potentially be read as a little mocking, because salman is famously unmarried)
[kapil repeats again, finally gets her to understand]
[sobhita says the phrase to trisha]
trisha: "kutta kidhar gaya, find it; inka raasta mein mind it" (the first part is correct, the second half means something like 'in their path, mind it')
trisha to vikram: "kutta" ('dog')
[vikram is alarmed]
[explains the first part to him correctly; i know there's a song playing over their voices for this part]
trisha: "in raasta mein gaya" (means '[he] went in this path/road')
vikram to karthi: "kutta kahan gaya? find it; in raasta mein gaya" (which makes sense tbh)
karthi: (in tamil) this is not hindi!
karthi to jayam: "kahan gaya…find it…yeh raja" ('yeh raja' means 'this king')
[says something in tamil i couldn't catch]
jayam, fed up: "kaal kare so aaj kar, aaj kare so ab; pal mein parlay hoyegi, bahuri karega kab?"
(i love that he said this so much, because i learned this in school and this is the only one i know by heart to this day; so there was a medieval poet called kabir das, and he famously wrote these couplets or 'dohe' that had some type of moral lesson to be learned; this one in particular means 'don't leave any work for tomorrow; do tomorrow's work today, and do today's work now. we don't know if in the next moment the world will end, or if we will die, so when else will we do the things we have to do?)
[kapil reveals the original line; applauds them for playing]

do you think saif ali khan is hot? there is something so unnerving about him to me. also, and my family thinks im crazy for this, do you think hrithik roshan is hot? i think he is soo ugly. well maybe not ugly but definitely not hot.
what bollywod stars do you think are hot? lately, i've been drooling over karthi.
saif ali khan - he's alright if you look at him from certain angles, and only if he has a beard (unbearded saif is...... hm)
hrithik roshan - only in action thrillers where his bulging muscles are bigger than my head. see the first war movie.
as for actors..... im a clown for ayushmann khurrana. he's stupid pretty!! because i am basic, i also like shah rukh khan when he's sporting a beard. vikram too. tiger shroff is a dreamboat. im an idiot, so once in a while, salman will look nice with a well-trimmed beard (see the cameo in pathaan).

Ponniyin selvan 2
THREE WORDS: Kalki goddamn Krishnamoorthy.
An absolute visionary. The creativity behind this complex game of thrones like novel is insane. Except he wrote it in 1954. Props to Mani Ratnam for bringing the novel to life. Vikram and Aishwarya Rai absolutely steal the show in this gripping sequel. Karthi , Jaya Ravi and Trisha have been amazing too. Vanthiyethevan is a legendary character and is probably going to be Karthis most memorable role. Tamil cinema has reached New heights for me today.
Always be compassionate

Ponniyin Selvan has been watched (at a rather very late time last night) so here’s my review? (though I am in no position to review a mani ratnam film)
(I would like to emphasize this is my personal opinion and I would not like to start a war. There’s already one happening on Twitter if you’d like to go pick a bone)
Would I say this is the best Mani Ratnam film I’ve watched? No.
Would I say it’s his best from the past decade?. Heck yeah!
The movie (like one kind person said on this app) is fast paced and slow paced. If you’ve read atleast the first book, you’ll realize how jam packed the scenes are but if you’re clueless as to who the heck even the cholas are, this is gonna be one heck of a slow ride for you.
This movie is COMPLETELY different from the rajamouli periodic films (because some idiots on Twitter are comparing it to baahubali). There are barely any elevations, and the actors are very simply, just there when it’s time (in fact the only character that gets “a proper intro” is Aditya Karikalan, and it’s literally just him riding his horse through mist). Everything is super subtle and more pleasing on the aesthetic side. It’s more like an art film, like the ones of Kurosawa, than it is a commercial one like Rajamouli’s.
(Although, I actually am very interested to see how rajamouli would utilize a LOADED story like ponniyin selvan)
If you are planning on watching this movie, I would recommend reading the character descriptions on Wikipedia, because guess what? Mani sir does it again. Like in Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, every character has an important role, but mani sir is practically running out of time to explore the characters deep enough, so we just get mere glances into who they actually are.
BUT THE ACTING (my lord the acting) does HEAVILY compensate for that. Simple glances, body language, voice modulations, if one observes carefully, they can understand what type of a person said character is.
For me personally, Karthi (my man), Trisha, and Aishwarya Rai SWEPT ME OFF MY FEET. Karthi is AMAZING as Vandiyadevan. Trisha and Aishwarya Rai can step on me and I WILL APOLOGIZE. My god. Their initial face off scene is one of, if not the best scene for me in the movie. (Also Vandiyadevan is one hell of a mood for simping over literally EVERYONE in this movie).
In the very little screen time that is given, Chiyaan Vikram is ABSOLUTELY fantastic (pleaseeee more characters where he actually acts and not just shows is skill of being versatile) and so is the rest of the main cast, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Shobitha. They’re on for very little, but when they are, you will not be able to take your eyes off of them.
And finally. The man of the hour. The person who literally carried this movie like Ponni did Arul Mozhi Varman. ISAI PUYAL AR RAHMAN. My god what did we do to deserve him? Many said the songs slowed down the pace, but honestly it kind of worked for me. And the BACKGROUND SCORE. HOLY CRAP IM GONNA NEED THAT OST. Super unique score and it kind of reminded me of Thiruda Thiruda (Donga Donga) Rahman where he just experiments with different styles and it works wonders. My personal favorite has to be the one that plays during the entire act of Kundavai and Nandini meeting for the first time. Some others are definitely when Vandiyadevan and Kundavai meet (and, of course, Vandiyadevan falls for her) and the ending of Chola Chola.
That is all. Sorry it’s ridiculously long.

Spoilers ahead… The film doesn’t bring you to the edge of your seat. Still, it is a solid addition to Hollywood-derived actioners like ‘Maanadu’ and ‘Vikram’..  PS Mithran may have developed a new genre: ShankarWood. Like the director Shankar, he takes an issue and makes it the basis for a Hollywood-style, hero-centric action movie. In Irumbu Thirai, the issue was cybercrime. In Hero, the issue…
