I love how we tumblr natives are all little goblins fiercely protective over our lovely little odd space where we can—simply exist to be honest.
It’s refreshing. The only refreshing little corner of the internet
it is so refreshing. tumblr is my safe space in a way and also the only place in the internet i visit regularly. i don't really use other social media that much. idk other sites are just not interesting to me. tumblr is giving me the opportunity to interact with, talk about, and share my interests with out having to market myself in anyway. it's all about the stuff i like and not really about me as a person or meaningless follower counts. like you said, you can simply exist on tumblr. and with the way the website works it's also quite "intimate"—you're in your curated space (of mutuals) and don't really get assaulted by EVERY trending post. we all constantly choose and select the things we want to show others and see for ourselves. a lot of other social media is simply *too much* for me. too many uncontrollable stimuli make my brain shut down.
i think a big reason why many longtime tumblr users are so protective is that they fear the ecosystem will collapse under masses of new users, and that staff will make changes to the site that will fundamentally change the way it functioned up until now. and i get that. i am a little scared too, because where am i supposed to go then??? but i honestly think tumblr will be fine. the migration isn't that excessive from what i have seen (and it probably won't last long....). i think the twitter peeps want a website closer to what twitter has to offer than what tumblr is currently offering, so i am convinced some new platform will pop up and fill that gap.
