Yesterday I went on a wikipedia excursion about horror movies from the 80s for reasons that arent relevant and while I was reading through the summary of Firestarter, I wondered why it didn't horrify me whatsoever.
There's some joke here about how that's just every preteens edgy OC backstory, but upon reflection I realized it's because the real world CIA has done much more horrifying things than try to kill one family with supernatural powers.
So for my next horror fix, I'll be reading the page for 'Unethical human experimentation in the United States'.
#ramble#posts with no deeper meaning#there are several deeper points i could be making but i dont want to. nor do i feel qualified.#horror media is such an interesting time capsule tho. if you look at the Twilight Zone you'll see this really clearly#the core themes in early episodes are isolation and communism/secret scary invasion from outside forces#and wouldnt you know it. peak cold war and space race.#for a bonus consider “the monsters are due on maple street” which originally had alien invasion as the threat#and then in a remake the threat was terrorism (sponsored by the us army). came out in 2003. wonder why that was relevant.#ah fuck now ive started making a point#might as well point out that “unethical human experimentation in the United States” has a suspicious lack of 21st century instances#technically without confirmation its just conjecture but cmon. we know they were up to some shit during the “war on terror”#i wonder which horror movies will become emblematic of our current days. i suspect a lot of Peele.#one of the funniest things is when directors decide the movie needs a happy ending because the world is too sad right now#happened to Get Out but also the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. the infamous ending came only with the reboot#but like imagine your job is to make something to really horrify people but then you look at the news and go “okay maybe thats enough”
