This week saw the release of Space Sweepers, Korea’s first big budget special effects space movie extravaganza. There are a lot of interesting things to say about this movie, but one of the things that makes it stand out is it’s an excellent portrayal of people in space who are skint.

See, I hate to break it to you, but you’re probably never going into space. Unless you’re a highly trained technical specialist (well done!) or a billionaire (pay your taxes!), your best shot at seeing Earth from space within your lifetime is the development of realistic-yet-cheap VR headsets.

And the thing is, a lot of the time this holds up in sci-fi as well. Space travellers are either living in a post-scarcity utopia, are part of the military, or are some kind of genius scientists.

Even where we see supposedly salt-of-the-Earth relatable types, like Han Solo or Mal Reynolds, their scruffy outfits and roguish ways can’t quite cover for the fact that they own and live in the equivalent of a massive luxury yacht or private plane. Serenity may look like a rust bucket, but it’s far from the equivalent of a white van, and while Mal is constantly complaining about the costs of fuel and repairs, that doesn’t change the fact that he seems to own the ship outright, and in “Oxygen” he appears ready to buy the ship for cash.

As for Han Solo, leaving for a moment his humble origins and that he won the ship in a card game, within the Galaxy Far Far Away the ratio of space travellers to non-space travellers doesn’t seem that different from the one on Earth. Yes, there are lots of smugglers and Tie-fighter pilots and interplanetary bounty hunters, but for every one of them there are millions of Tusken sand raiders, Jawa scrap merchants, moisture farmers and Corellian street rats. Spacecraft might come and go from the spires of Coruscant as regularly as buses, but the population density is such that most people on that planet will be lucky to see sunlight, let alone the stars.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, the chances of an ordinary person getting into space even in the foreseeable future vary between Willy Wonka Golden ticket level lucky, or truly dystopian. On the one hand, Elon Musk has announced the first all-civilian mission to space, led by billionaire Jared Isaacman (so, not what you’d call an everyman), two seats given to people who have won a place by donating to St Jude’s Hospital (it probably won’t be one of the smaller donors), and finally, one lucky front-line health worker.

But Elon Musk wants to colonise Mars, and sadly billionaires still need people to clean the toilets, so Musk has other ideas for how ordinary people might get into space. Unfortunately that idea is indentured slavery, demonstrating that the most prescient science fiction writers of our generation are the writers of first-person shooters.

This is why, outside of post-scarcity-fully-automated-luxury-space-communism, and the military, science fiction is always oddly quiet about money. With a few honourable exceptions.

We Just Work Here

The first and most obvious reason why any ordinary working-class person would end up in space is “they’re paid to”.

Pretty much the codifier of working-class people in space is Alien. The crew of Nostromo aren’t scientists, they’ve not got The Right Stuff. Nobody on that ship is getting a high school named after them. The crew of the Nostromo are basically truck drivers who venture off the highway and run into something nasty. Yes, ironically they show a great deal more competence, professionalism and intelligence in encountering an alien threat than the actual scientists in the prequel movie, but the first conversation these characters have when they come out of hyper sleep is about money. From the outset, these are people in a place of work.

It’s a model that set the format for gritty-industrial-working-class-people in space movies going forward for better or worse. Event Horizon just lifts Alien’s aesthetic completely for the rescue ship Lewis & Clark, as does the videogame series Dead Space, like Alien, set aboard a mining ship.

Away from the horror genre, Outland sees Sean Connery play sheriff in a final frontier mining town that could have taken place in the same world as Alien.

And of course, Red Dwarf, which not only made good use of the Alien aesthetic, but also cast the colony commander from Aliens as their Captain, to tell the story of chicken soup repairmen in space.

Across all of these stories, and of course the aforementioned videogames, the life of the blue collar space traveller is an unpleasant one, exploited by a company that not only controls your life while you work, but also owns all of your food, water and air. Indeed, it’s not rare for them to go further. In Moon, another film where the spacemen-to-earthmen ratio seems not far what it is now, Sam Bell’s employer decides to save the cost of training employees and ferrying them back and forth from Earth to the Moon by taking one employee and filling a cellar full of his pre-programmed, short-lived disposable clones.

But maybe you don’t want to work for “the Man”, not an unwise call given the Man is probably trying to feed you to something horrible in the hope of creating a new bioweapon. One surprisingly under-utilised method of getting into space is public transport.

In The Fifth Element, Bruce Willis plays a special-forces-operative-turned-cab-driver who, as part of his cover, wins a ticket to go on a space cruise. And while on the surface the aesthetic looks a bit Alien, in truth it feels far more like it’s cobbled together from relics of the actual space age.

And finally, of course, there’s the Elon Musk solution. Borrow your way into space. One of the early places to use this idea was Gateway, by Frederik Pohl. Frederik Pohl in particular is fantastic at writing science fiction worlds where people actually have to worry about money. In Gateway and its sequels humanity has discovered Ancient Aliens left a space station nearby, stocked with a lot of spaceships. Being alien technology, humans can’t control the ships accurately, they’re limited pretty much to pressing the “Stop” and “Go” buttons, and when the ship flies off it might land on a world of fabulous riches, or it might chuck you into the heart of a star.

Prospectors who want to try their luck in these ships have to take out a loan to get to the station, and throughout the novel the protagonist is constantly aware of how many credits are in his account.

Which brings us back around to Space Sweepers. At first glance the Space Sweepers set-up might seem similar to that of the Millennium Falcon or Serenity – an extremely “used” looking ship run by a rag-tag bunch of misfits. But the first time we see the protagonist, Tae-ho, he’s in a pawn shop. As soon as he gets back to the ship we learn the crew are still paying off the cost of the ship, as well as the costs of repairs and parts.

We see an awful lot of “Space sweepers” throughout the film, junk collectors gathering up salvage from Earth’s orbiting collection of derelict spacecraft and defunct satellites. But these people don’t seem like roguish space pirates, the impression they give is more akin to app-based gig workers.

48 HOURS IN TORONTO: A WEEKENDER’S GUIDE

Modern and multicultural, Toronto is eastern Canada’s powerhouse city. It’s a huge, sprawling place, made up of lots of smaller, individual neighbourhoods. But a weekend is just enough to get a taste of Toronto. And this is a weekend packed full of different experiences. You’ll get a view from on high, feast on food from around the world, experience Canada’s sport obsession, and even fit in an island escape. So here’s how I’d spend my perfect 48 hours in Toronto.

WHERE TO STAY IN TORONTO

We arrived into Toronto after two weeks of sleeping in an RV. So we were more than ready for somewhere luxurious to lay our head, and we found it at the Thompson Toronto. This boutique hotel is located in King West Village – Toronto’s version of Soho – with lots of restaurants and bars nearby. The rooms are smart, modern and bright. But the wow-factor spot is the rooftop pool terrace and bar with views over the city skyline. Rooms from C$300 a night.

FRIDAY EVENING

Once you’ve checked in to your hotel, head to the Distillery District in the east of the city. This pedestrianised area is made up of beautiful restored Victorian-era, red-brick buildings. It gets the name from its days as the base of the Gooderham & Worts whisky distillery, which was the largest distillery in the world in the 1860s. Today the Distillery District is a hub of cafés, restaurants, studios, galleries and shops spread across 40 buildings and 10 streets.

Take wander around and stop off for drinks and dinner wherever catches your eye. The focus is on independent businesses rather than big chains. Try Mill Street Brewery for microbrewery beers and pub food, El Catrin for Mexican favourites or Cluny for French bistro style.

SATURDAY MORNING

Start the day with a trip to the Royal Ontario Museum. Canada’s largest museum was originally five separate museums so it covers a real mix of subjects, featuring everything from world cultures to art, archaeology to natural history. With over six million objects and 40 galleries you’re never going to see it all, so pick a few sections that interest you the most.

My favourites were the dinosaurs, bat cave and First Nations totem poles. But some of the museum’s other highlights are its Asian art and ceramics collections, the Egyptian mummies, meteorites, gems and minerals. There’s also an interactive learning centre for kids.

Next head towards the waterfront for lunch at St Lawrence Market (open 5am–3pm Saturdays). This Toronto icon has been running since 1803 and was named best food market in the world by National Geographic. The north market is a farmers’ market selling local produce. And the south market has over 120 stalls where you can fill up on bagels, crêpes, pierogi and more.

Make sure you go hungry – the smells are guaranteed to get your mouth watering. One of the classic St Lawrence Market dishes is a peameal bacon sandwich. Unsmoked bacon is cured and rolled in cornmeal to keep it moist, then served in a bun with honey mustard sauce. Or there’s the Boston Blue Fish and Chips, with crispy battered fish, chips and homemade coleslaw.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Toronto loves its sports, and hockey is almost a religion in Canada. You can join the worshippers at the Hockey Hall of Fame, just a few minutes’ walk from St Lawrence Market. Fans can check out the trophies and kit on display. And hockey novices (like me) can find out more about how it’s become so huge in Canada, and try out your skills with interactive games.

Head across the city to Kensington Market next. This National Historic Site is less a market and more a cool, colourful, multicultural neighbourhood well worth a wander around. There are vintage shops, record stores and boutiques to browse. Or you can go street art spotting and check out the street performers. There’s a good selection of places to eat and drink too.

It’s a real melting pot of cultures and cuisines with stalls and eateries selling tasty dishes from empanadas to hot pots. Some of the most famous spots are Rasta Pasta with its Jamaican-Italian fusion pasta dishes and Wanda’s Pie in the Sky for sweet treats. Or head to nearby Chinatown for an Asian feast. Then finish off the night with drinks at a rooftop bar – the Drake, Thompson and Broadview hotels all have cocktail spots with knockout city panoramas.

SUNDAY MORNING

The CN Tower dominates the Toronto skyline. It was the world’s tallest tower for over 30 years, and although it’s been overtaken since, you can see all the way over the city from the top – and even as far as the US on a clear day. The main observation deck is at 346 metres high, and there’s a glass-floored section just below and the Sky Pod higher up at 447 metres.

If just checking out the view at the top is a bit too tame, there’s also the Edge Walk. This knee-trembling, hands-free walk takes you around the top of the tower on a five-foot-wide outdoor ledge. It will set you back C$225 though – so if either the price of the heights are too scary you can watch the crazy folks in action from the viewing platform instead. The Tower gets really busy, so get in there soon after it opens at 8.30am to miss the worst of the queues.

Next door to the CN Tower is the Rogers Centre – home of the famous Toronto Blue Jays baseball team. If you can pick up tickets for a game during your weekend trip then it’s a fantastic taste of Canadian culture. Otherwise you can get a peek behind-the-scenes with a tour of the stadium, which run from October to May (check their website for dates and times).

Next walk down to Toronto’s waterfront. This area along the banks of Lake Ontario used to be an industrial harbour, but was transformed into a waterfront park in the 1970s. There’s a mix of event spaces, apartments and even a few city beaches. Check out what’s on at the Harbourfront Centre – you’ll often find free music events. Then call in at the Amsterdam Brewhouse for lunch, a brew pub with a prime lakeside location and plenty of outside space for sunny days.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON

After lunch, escape the city for a few hours on a boat trip to the Toronto Islands. This group of 15 islands is only 100 metres offshore at its closest point, but makes for a relaxed waterside escape from the city. The islands are a mix of nature reserves, beaches, boat clubs and residential islands. Together they make up the largest car-free urban community in North America.

If you’re pushed for time you can take a one-hour sightseeing cruise through the waterways. Or if you’ve got longer you can catch the ferry and stop off on one of the islands. Either way make sure to look back as you sail out into Lake Ontario for that perfect Toronto skyline view. The islands are a great place to hire a bike or a canoe and explore for a few hours. Or you can visit the amusement park on Centre Island and relax on the beach with an ice cream.

Back on the mainland, finish off your weekend in Toronto with a beer at Steam Whistle Brewing. This microbrewery is set in a historic brick roundhouse. It’s part of the Roundhouse Park and is surrounded by the Toronto Railway Museum’s collection of vintage trains. There’s an original 120-foot-long locomotive turntable as well as a miniature train you can take a ride on.

Cruising to the end!

This cruise was a last last minute decision, encouraged by my friend Jas in Trini (and some of my friends back home). I'd cruised before, but never solo. Let alone solo in a foreign country! The over night ferry cruises to get to Germany last month don't count..

Any way turns out cruising Americans love that Aussie accent to.. somehow I met this amazing couple from Maryland on the first night. We clicked and ended up spending at least part of each evening together. Great minds think alike (and have the same drink/bar tastes)...

This cruise was a 7 night Eastern Carribean adventure taking in 3 ports out of Fort Lauderdale.

Sint Maartens / St Martins island was amazing. It blows my mind that such a tiny place is literally split in two. France owns the 53km sq northern side of the island where it's known Saint Martin with its capital Marigot. This area is wholly part of France, and as such they are part of the European Union. The currency is euro (although mist places will also accepr US dollars) and the people speak French as well as English.

St Maartens, on the Southern Dutch side with its capital of Phillipsburg is the smaller portion of the island at 34km sq. Where it's small in stature is made up by controlling the largest port and being able to accommodate the large cruise ships. This section is technically one of four constituemt countries that form part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Here they currently accept the Netherlands Antillean guilder (this is changing soon!) as well as US dollars.

The island itself was discovered in 1493 by Christopher Colombus, and at one stage was major producer of salt via a multitude of salt ponds some of which are still visible (but no longer used) today. The division between the 2 countries dates back to 1648, where the Dutch and the French finally agreed to split the territory via signing the treaty of Concordia. As you go from one side to the other it's clear how much emphasis on looking after the country has been placed by their respective governing bodies. Fun fact - as small as it is, it is still an international call to call from one side to the other! Oh, and the main airport on the French side is the one where they fly over you on the beach and you have to hang on to the fence to stop blowing away...

I did a bus tour to both sides of the island taking in the crazy iguanas in trees... seriously those things were huge and everywhere! I then spent the remainder of my day in Phillipsburg exploring it's gorgeous little streets and architecture, hanging on the fabulous beach, drinking beer and eating jerk chicken...I like to call that 'full immersion '😁

Then we were off to overnight to our next stop. San Juan, Puerto Rico. This one was an oddly short stop, which I found out later may have been due to some very high port costs (apparently US port areas charge steep fees based on time in port making it less cost effective to stay longer). Anyway we technically had about 6 hrs in port. After a leisurely start that saw me trying to convince myself to get off the boat, I wandered ashore with half a plan and ended up walking around the old town and city area for a good 2.5 hrs. Puerto Rico is classed as a US territory, so rather than being governed wholly by the US and it's constitution, it's kind of like the US over sees what goes on but the country govern themselves and follow parts of the US constitution. It's really complicated to explain fully, so go look it up and it'll make more sense! Anyway the city of San Juan was founded by Spanish colonists in 1521. The city lays claim to some of the most extensive preserved examples of Spanish coastal fortifications, as well as some amazing historical buildings. You all know how much I love a good fort, and here they were dotted along the cliffs of the city. Fort San Felipe Del Moro, Fort San Cristobal and La Fortaleza. No, I did not climb all over them... I wandered to each of them and marvelled at he ingenuity, but refrained from needing to climb to the top (I'm blaming time constraints ...🤣) anyway the gorgeous Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery, a colonial era cemetery dating from 1863 is located just outside the walls of Fort San Felipe Del Moro and together the two form a breathtaking break in the skyline to the shore. Luckily for me a tourist from one if the tours warned me to get off the wall overlooking the ceremony as apparently you get a 500 USD fine for standing on it! No signs telling you that, so hey, dodged a bullet there! Later back on the ship, I overheard some fellow passengers stating they thought San Juan was a poor and dirty city. I guess all this travel has allowed me to see past that without realising. I thought it had a charm about it, (some of its residents thought they had charm too - queue guy trying to chat me up as he drove next to me in his car...🤣). It wasn't any dirtier than any other city I've visited (in fact there have been a hack of alot of places that were way worse, as were parts of LA - which I was yet to see) It's well known the country is struggling immensely with corruption and the vast divide in income for its citizens. The people I encountered were well versed in Touristing (again, like every where!) I really liked my time here, and would have liked longer in order to have been able to venture out of the city to see some of the natural wonders this country possesses.

Off overnight again, this time to the port of Labadee, a resort port on the island of Haiti that is owned by the cruise ship company. What a perfect Carribean stop, beaches, bbq, cocktails, sun and the glorious water of the Caribbean. I had only intended a multi beach swim /lunch/ then back on the ship stop, but ended up meeting a lovely young couple of newlyweds from Florida who wanted to spend the day 'chatting with the Aussie cause your accent is amazing'. 😂 hey I learned alot more about America and the music in Nashville (the husband was originally from there), and found out what 'dip ' is so it was a win-win. Btw 'dip' is like a tobacco but you don't chew it you stick it inside your bottom lip and then spit every now and then... kinda gross, but hey whatever floats ya boat!

Haiti outside of the resort area is a mess. A real mess. It's a country in financial crisis, with an unstable government and a collapsing infrastructure struggling to cope with the lawlessness of some of its inhabitants. I didn't do any of the tours as they didn't leave the safety of the resort bubble, so you weren't seeing the 'real' Haiti. I did end up buying a bracelet from a local artist and somehow being given 2 necklaces by another two artists...don't ask me what happened but to my relief, having them on seemed to deter other hardy salesmen. The people of Haiti still gain an income from having the ships come in, so for that I was grateful. It's not enough to fix their problems though....

All too soon we were back on board and off for our last night at sea, and for me, off to LA. Rather than doing the 6hr or so worth of flights followed by the big one back to Aus, I'd opted to fly to LA and spend one night there, leaving late the next evening. Synchronicity saw me receive the email for my free night of accomodation that I'd earnt earlier at one of the chain hotels in the US. This meant my last night was a freebie, go me! I got in late the night before, so literally had a day in LA. Jumped a tour that took me out to Marina Del Ray, Little Venice, Venice Beach, Santa Monica pier, Hollywood, the walk of fame, Mann's theatre... all the biggies! As much as I'd have liked to do the studio tours, no time. I will say I was underwhelmed by most of what so saw. Maybe I have been awed by too many things, but I thought LA was not worth the hype. The Hollywood walk of fame needed a bloody good clean, Venice Beach was just a beach with a whole lot of over priced tourist traps... I dunno. I'm hoping this isn't all of the West Coast because I was intending to go back and make it happen... (once I can convince someone to join me and share driving cause this one needs a co - pilot!)😁

I finally have to go back to Australia and make a decision about my job, where I'm going to live...pretty much have to go back and adult again (gosh darn it!).

How much has this adventure changed me? Immeasurably. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to do this. I am so proud of who I am and what I've achieved. Am I glad I did it - hell yeah! Would I change anything? Hell no! Everything that has happened, happened for a reason, changing it would change where I am now. I have learnt some amazing things about travelling, hints and tricks for booking places, how transport works in different countries, whether it's cheaper to buy tickets early/last minute. Logistical lessons most definitely. What I've learnt about me, could fill a book....

If I could encourage one person to take the step and travel solo and feel this joy and strength...even the smallest step, the shortest of time..just do it.

The people I have met have added something to each stage of my journey. No matter how small our interaction. For that I want to say a massive "Thank you", to each and every one of you. You have given me so much more than you would ever know or understand.

This isn't the end. It's only the beginning. There's a whole lot more of the world out there that I'm itching to explore ... I'll have to do it in pieces though as I've yet to discover the magic formula to allow me to continue to finance myself to keep travelling...

Where to next? Not sure yet... choice is an amazing luxury! Some of my trips I'll need a co-pilot to make it easier so that in itself will take time. Not sure how many people could handle travelling with me!!😉
