The action in the Lincoln Challenger continued with qualifier Colton Smith, who is an upcoming senior in the next academic year (2024/25) currently studying in the University of Arizona, took on wild card Joshua Lapadat, who graduated from the Universiry of Kentucky and became the runner-up of the Granby Challenger's doubles sector with Justin Boulais a couple of weeks ago. Some argued that Colton deserved the main draw wild card, which was proven by his recent ITF forms as the runner-up of ITF M15 Los Angeles (Jun 24), ITF M25 Dallas (Jul 8), and won his first ITF title for the year in ITF M25 Champaign (Jul 22, d. Andre Ilagan), but this match also became explanatory in his case here as he defeated the likes of Quinn Vandecasteele and Shintaro Mochizuki in both qualifying rounds.
After Colton smoothly held his service game to 1-0, he became more aggressive to start the second game as his drive volley equalized the score 4 points into that game before J. Lapadat's forehand error secured the former's early break to 2-0. The qualifier smoothly consolidated his lead to 3-0, where Colton generated his game point through a stunning forehand lob.
Somehow, J. Lapadat found himself in trouble as Colton out-rallied him, which became more evident as the former's forehand error that preceded another different error resulted in the latter's break-back to 4-0. Colton then held his serves to 5-0, and proceeded to start the next game more dominantly as a working volley set himself 2 points ahead after another forehand winner. J. Lapadat found himself in the trenches as a double fault fumbled his earliest game point, and Colton took advantage of the Canadian's forehand error that created his set point before its immediate conversion thanks to his working forehand lob, serving the first-set bagel (6-0) to assert his dominance in this match.

Former Quebec engineering executive receives 12-month sentence for bid-rigging
OTTAWA â The Competition Bureau says a former executive of Quebec engineering firm Dessau received a 12-month sentence after pleading guilty Thursday in the Court of Quebec to rigging bids for City of Gatineau infrastructure contracts.
Dave Boulay, formerly Dessauâs director and assistant vice-president, Outaouais, was sentenced to six months of house arrest and six months under curfew.
He admitted to participating in a bid-rigging scheme from 2006 to 2008 in which several engineering firms conspired to divide up city contracts among themselves without the municipalityâs knowledge.
The regulator says Boulay received leniency in sentencing because of his co-operation with the investigation and the fact that he had no role in the instigation of the bid-rigging scheme.
Court proceedings are ongoing against three co-accused: Andre Mathieu, formerly vice-president and associate of Cima+; Claude Marquis, formerly regional director, Outaouais for Genivar (now WSP Global) and Michel Famery, formerly regional vice-president, Dessau.
Criminal charges were laid last June against the four men in connection with bid-rigging of 21 Gatineau infrastructure contracts awarded between 2004 and 2008.

Thursday was the last day to ship packages and expect them to arrive in time for the holidays without using express shipping.Â
22News spoke with people doing their last-minute shopping locally. Â
Shoppers may have missed their window to shop online and get and their items in time for Christmas but that can lead to more last-minute shoppers crowding local stores. Â
A2Z Science and Learning store in Northampton said the last few days before Christmas see a lot of customers coming in before that December 25 deadline.Â
âPeople really do appreciate that we've got the full store, the full selection,â said Andre Boulay, owner of A2Z Science and Learning. âI think getting your hands-on stuff in person is more fun anyways. Christmas Eve is still a really big day for us that Monday, so we'll be open at 9 a.m., and we'll be here until people are shopping.âÂ
Local retailers like A2Z Science and Learning have extended their hours for the holidays, as have big box stores like Kohl's, which will be open 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday for those still in last-minute search for gifts. Â
With only a few days left until Christmas, some shoppers are getting their gifts wherever it's convenient. Â
âI had appointments in Northampton today and I finished early, and I had a little bit of time to do some last-minute shopping, get some stocking stuffers and gifts for my boyfriend,â said Kate Baisley of Lee. âReally great stuff around here.âÂ
If you do opt for online shopping, you have until December 22 to use the postal service's Priority Mail Express and get your gift where it's going on time.Â

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) â An independently-owned Northampton toy store doesnât expect much impact from the closure of hundreds of Toys âRâ Us stores.
Toys âRâ Us announced Wednesday they would be closing all of their U.S. stores.
The Babies âRâ Us at the Holyoke Mall and the Toys âRâ Us in Springfield are among the stores that will close.
Toys âRâ Us closings impacting western Massachusetts shoppers
A to Z Science and Learning store has been in Northampton for 30 years, first in Thornes Marketplace and now on King Street.
A to Z said their community focus sets them apart from the online retailers.
âOne of the reasons we have been successful long term is because the community comes in and shops,â said Andre Boulay, owner of the store. âToys âRâ Us is close and at the same time far enough away that I donât know if it will change a whole lot for us.â
Boulay said the internet retailers can actually help brick-and-mortar stores by posting pictures of some of the newest products and toys, sometimes bringing customers in to see and touch them.
