The Saint: To Kill a Saint (5.19, ITC, 1967)
"You're trembling, Le Duc."
"Never!"
"You're as upset as a mother kangaroo who's just had her pouch raided."
"I am not even mildly surprised. There must be over a hundred people in Paris who would like to kill the famous Simon Templar."
#the saint#to kill a saint#1967#leslie charteris#michael winder#robert asher#roger moore#annette andre#peter dyneley#derek bond#francis matthews#robert cawdron#john serret#pamela ann davy#michael bilton#robert gillespie#victor winding#lawrence davidson#valerie leon#maggie wright#nita lorraine#Simon's in Paris and apparently has a hire car; I mention this only bc the Saintmobile has been conspicuous by its absence in most of these#colour eps but also bc this car magically changes colour from white to yellow depending on whether the shots are location or studio work#tbf not so much of an issue considering these eps were being transmitted in black and white in the uk.. this is a pretty solid ep#a twisty mystery about who's trying to frame who and why has someone got it in for Simon (i mean apart from the many obvious reasons)#speaking of which he does threaten to spank poor Annette André but relents once she bursts into tears... yeesh. Cawdron makes his fifth and#final appearance as Le Duc (spelled differently here than in previous eps where it was Leduc or even Luduc) joined for the second time by#Serret as Quercy (although tellingly Cawdron is ahead of him in the credits). yet again Simon is framed using the stick figure motif#also of note is a very risqué gag about Simon found in bed with two women and another in the shower... so risqué in fact the script then#has to go to pains to spell out that no don't worry he didn't have a foursome‚ it was all a trick to fool the cops... sure Simon...

Albert Finney in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (Karel Reisz, 1960)
Cast: Albert Finney, Shirley Anne Field, Rachel Roberts, Hylda Baker, Norman Rossington, Bryan Pringle, Robert Cawdron, Edna Morris, Elsie Wagstaff, Frank Pettit, Avis Bunnage, Colin Blakely, Irene Richmond. Screenplay: Alan Sillitoe, based on his novel. Cinematography: Freddie Francis. Art direction: Edward Marshall. Music: John Dankworth.
The 24-year-old Albert Finney was spot-on casting for the antihero of Alan Sillitoe's adaptation of his novel, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. With his slicked-up coif, predatory grin, and omnipresent cigarette, Finney's Arthur Seaton exudes the kind of sexual attractiveness that allows one to ignore his rough edges. Always on the prowl, Arthur is the quintessential working-class yobbo, drinking too much and sleeping around too carelessly. He gets his comeuppance when Brenda (Rachel Roberts), married to the stodgy Jack (Bryan Pringle), becomes pregnant -- Jack's sexual neglect makes her sure the child is Arthur's -- and Jack's brother and another soldier work Arthur over in a vacant lot. Meanwhile, he has fallen for Doreen (Shirley Anne Field), and the film ends with Arthur and Doreen on a hillside overlooking their factory town, planning a wedding and dreaming of a home of their own. But from what we've seen of Arthur, this is almost a parody of a happy ending. Doreen's a tough cookie, too, and we can only foresee a kind of grim muddling-through future, a recapitulation of the lives of their parents and neighbors. It's to the credit of Finney and a superb supporting cast that the film is not a dreary slog through blighted lives, but a kind of tribute to the persistent energy of the working class. It helps that the movie is filmed by the great Freddie Francis, who finds a rich palette of grays in the surroundings, and provides a needed burst of action in the fairgrounds sequence. But above all, it's Finney's show, launching one of the great movie careers, from rakish young leading man to invaluable character actor.

The Saint: Jeannine (3.3, ITC, 1964)
"Templar, I know perfectly well why you're here. The fact that you have checked into the same hotel as Madam Chen, and the fact that the lady owns a pearl necklace worth three hundred thousand American dollars, can hardly be called a coincidence."
"What a nasty, suspicious mind you have. But, if you're worried, why don't you pop me into one of the deepest dungeons in the Bastille?"
#the saint#jeannine#itc#leslie charteris#1964#terry nation#john llewellyn moxey#roger moore#sylvia syms#jacqui chan#robert cawdron#manning wilson#ric young#martin miller#peter elliott#john dearth#peter diamond#michael anthony#maggie wright#this is i think the 42nd episode of the show so far‚ but in Jacqui Chan I'm fairly certain we have our first significant role for a non#white actress. as @thisbluespirit will know all too well‚ Jacqui was also a costar in The Hidden Truth in 64 (it would have just finished#airing when this ep was broadcast in late October). sadly her inclusion here does not prevent this from being a problem episode; Simon's#opening monologue is unforgivably racist and misogynistic‚ truly one of his worst‚ and despite the presence of Chan and Ric Young‚ the#production team still decided it was appropriate to put Peter Elliott in yellowface. this is all very disappointing‚ not least bc otherwise#this is a pretty strong outing. Cawdron returns as Sgt Leduc for a third time while Wilson makes his second appearance as Quercy. Simon has#history with Sylvia Sym's titular swindler‚ albeit offscreen history. where this episode badly fails Chan in characterisation it does make#up for a little with Ric Young's likeable young innocent. Elliott's character has a few scenes that feel like they're building to something#that never really comes (it would have been infinitely better to excise the character altogether).#Simon is very reluctant to kiss Madam Chen which had damn well better be bc she's unpleasant and not more racist shit#terry nation i have my eyes on you and i am ready to throw hands

The Saint: The Abductors (4.2, ITC, 1965)
"Inspector Quercy don't be a complete idiot, you know I'm not a murderer."
"I do not suggest that you kill these people."
"Thank you."
"But I do suggest that you are directly responsible for their deaths."

Bob Urquhart does his best washed up waster with a heart of gold‚ and the#baddies include baby Nick Courtney as a wicked frenchman and Dudley Foster as... well. immediately i found myself wondering what on earth#he was doing with his voice when‚ horror of horrors‚ another character makes passing reference to his being Welsh. oh Dudley. sigh.#Courtney's villain is a big step up from his previous uncredited role in 3.14 and he gets to go real nasty (slapping around both women in#the episode). Chinn rather unfairly goes uncredited despite having both dialogue and an impressive fight scene. and of course lovely#Annette Andre plays a charmingly eager holidaymaker who gets caught up in Simon's adventure of the week and loves every second of it#oh!! and beautiful Sandor Elés! he'd not long made Evil of Frankenstein but hasn't much to do here (but does it with style and grace and..)#dreamy sigh

Doctor Who: The Ambassadors of Death (7.3, BBC, 1970)
"And what do you think they should do?"
"Arm every available missile with atomic warheads and blast that thing out of our sky!"
"Isn't that a bit extreme?"
"It's our moral duty."
"I think the General's a bit overwrought."
"I think he's insane."

Ralph Cornish! one of my#favourite one shot characters. poor weasely Lennox! Carrington‚ a truly multi layered and complex (even sympathetic) villain. even that#rotter Reegan is strangely charismatic‚ particularly in his last scene ('don't forget i suggested it..'). real solid script work going on#here‚ plus Liz my beloved‚ plus the Brig has an AMAZING episode 7 being a full on badass and riding bessie like an avenging angel

The Saint: The Work of Art (2.7, ITC, 1963)
"Mère Lafond, I think it might be wiser if we were to co-operate."
"Ohh, you have changed, my disreputable buccaneer, co-operate!"
"Yes, but in this case it would be better."
"In this case, I go home. My cat is better company than this!"

The Saint: The Covetous Headsman (1.4, ITC, 1962)
"Inspector Quercy, how nice to see you."
"Ah, Monsieur Templar, how very nice to see you - provided you have come to France only as a tourist."
"Now what does that mean?"
"That means that there are servants of the Republic, of whom I am one, whose job is to concern themselves with crime. We do not allow private individuals to take over the duties of the police."
#the saint#the covetous headsman#leslie charteris#itc#John Roddick#Michael Truman#roger moore#barbara shelley#eugene deckers#george pastell#esmond knight#carole gray#robert cawdron#josephine brown#michael spear#andre boulay#natalie benesh#barbara roscoe#peter brace#1962#ah what a cast! personal fave George Pastell (made up to be playing older than his actual age)‚ good old Esmond Knight and of course the#ever lovely Barbara Shelley; Simon meets Babs on the plane to Paris where she's meeting her long lost brother. she pulls out a picture to#show him and it's of stuntman and background player Peter Brace‚ so immediately this bodes not well. indeed Brace doesn't actually get any#real screen time that isn't below a sheet on a marble slab. to find the villain Simon must piece together a mystery dating back to ww2; in#the process we learn he fought with the resistance (making ST at the very least in his late 30s here‚ a little older than Moore himself).#the wartime hangover was a fairly common trope in early ITC stuff (see also eps of Interpol Calling and Ghost Squad) and tho it became less#used it still popped up in later shows like Strange Report and The Zoo Gang. Simon seems to be at peace with allowing the execution of a#wartime collaborator‚ fitting in with that darker energy i mentioned last time which is more in the spirit of the books (and which im#fairly certain gets watered down over time). Simon begins the ep being awful about a complaining lady on his plane but later he's much more#charming to an elderly landlady (deliberately shown to be at odds with the way the police talk to her). no location work in Gay Paris tho
