RingStone Round

A woman named Su writes of Ringstone Round. "I have been doing research on Quatermass movie and television series and have read about Ringstone Round on your site. I think you might like it. To verify its authenticity, as far as I know, it was written by Andrew Kneale specifically to refer to a large circle in the Quatermass series. Finally, a circle called the Ringstone around I can not be sure about this, but I suspect the verse. Not heard until around 1979 when the series aired. "

Mac Fayden wrote me, "... a slight correction to Quatermass written by Nigel Kneale, not Andrew Kneale. Ringstone Round does not exist - it was created to be a venue for private shows, even with the poem. Acting, I think it should become a proper bona fide nursery rhyme. "

Pete Wickham wrote to me about Huffity Puffity. He thinks it's older than the Quatermass series:

"I just moved and just got around to getting more new tables in the treatment of the 21st century. The old table was bought secondhand in late 1973 and I think it dated from the late 1920s. Moringa oak I thought, and it was acting good, I saw a better day, and my daughter and her husband broke up to get rid of it when loaded into the car, she saw that something was written with a pencil on the panel inside. One grill, where it has to be hid since the table was built, it is quite difficult to read as written with a pencil on a dark stain. But if you get the light in the right place, it's a version of 'Huffitty, Puffity, another round, harmonious ring!

I have capital and small letters written in lowercase and punctuation. This is different from Jim Linwood's version.

After the critical and popular success of Quatermass and Pit, Nigel Kneale was asked if he would write more about Quatermass. He did not rule it out, though he acknowledged that the three series made a desirable trilogy in the mid-1960s. Irene Shubik asked him to write a new Quatermass pen for BBC2 science fiction kit from Out Unknown Kneale. Denied (although he wrote a non-Quatermass story - The Chopper - for the fourth and final series. But like many episodes later, this has been sadly sad.)

At the beginning of the 1970s, Kneale began a fourth draft of Quatermass, and, as previous work, it was offered to the BBC. It did not create a good response from them, although this was a key factor that Kneale decided to move to ITV.

Euston Film (a subsidiary of Thames Television) was interested in Quatermass, and in 1979, twenty years after Quatermass and Pit, Professor made his last bow. In the last twenty years, both television and society have changed dramatically - and Quatermass reflects this. It does not mean perfect. (And it was polarizing most of the serials), but there was enough to make it a worthwhile watch.
