Community Action Award Winner: Rebecca LaPoint

This past month of my internship at the Büro zur Umsetzung von Gleichbehandlung has gone by too fast. Berlin is amazing in the summer, and I’m sad that my time here is quickly winding down. It has been a particularly exciting month at BUG, as we received the judgments for two cases that we were supporting, both with positive rulings.

The first case was about the discriminatory security of a black family on a train in Rhineland-Pflaz. It was decided that the security check was carried out on grounds of racial profiling, and was therefore discriminatory and illegal. The case had been fought since the beginning of 2014.

In the case of a Muslim woman training to become a judge, the judgment was also positive. During training, the complainant was not allowed to take a place at the judge’s table due to her headscarf. Before a court in Augsburg, Germany, the denial of the complainant to sit as a judge based on her religious belief and decision to wear a headdress was found to be illegal. Reactions to this decision have been largely positive, but the debate of neutrality of a judge while wearing religious signifiers has been tense.

As far as my tasks here, I’ve been continuing to translate, as I spoke more about in my first post. I’ve also done research on Public Sector Equality Duty in Ireland, a practice that BUG is fighting to implement in Germany. This duty is meant for organizations that receive public funding, in order to prevent discriminatory practices from taking place, rather than reacting once a case of discrimination has already happened. It also functions as a tool against institutional discrimination, which can be harder to detect, but affects so many people.

It has been a great opportunity to work for BUG, and has allowed me to work with fantastic people and form lifelong connections. I am looking forward to continue working here in Berlin for another three weeks, until heading home to Bard.
