i caught up with taz and made the mistake of looking at reddit and youtube comments to read about theories n stuff and i noticed that apparently a bunch of people think merle is a bad/boring character and i am havin some Thoughts (tm) about it

the main points that people were making is the inconsistency in his characterisation and the lack of interesting drama in his backstory and i mean. i guess i can see where the ppl with these criticisms are coming from, bc yeah it is rare to have characters like this in western mainstream media?

(i read a post once about a genre of japanese (?) stories that dont involve conflict and that seem really boring to western readers who are used to these really dramatic narratives, man i gotta find that again)

but characters with a clean-cut personality that either doesnt change or very slowly developes and a tragic conflict in the past that shapes them as a person (like taako and magnus) are not the only way to write a character, and imo its not even realistic, like, its an efficient way to write characters but people aren’t (always) like that u know? 

im using myself as a point of reference here, and i’m not like that, which i guess is why i feel so defensive of merle. my view of the world and myself and my place in it is constantly shifting, just like his faith in his deity (going from “i didnt really care much for pan” to “i desperately need pans approval”) and his past (going from “loveless marriage” to “i still carry the ring with me wherever i go”) and so on, and the way i talk about myself or take actions strongly depends on where i’m at mentally and emotionally in that very moment. which leads to a bunch of contradictions and confusion and identity crises and yeah its super frustrating, but having a character also be sort of confused/confusing regarding his personality and his role is really cool and new and interesting to me.

the same goes for the backstory, like not every character needs death and loss in their past, sometimes you just bumble along, never really knowing what your purpose is, being insecure about what you even have going for you and thats enough background to make a character. not neccessarily a conventional one but definitely an interesting one

does any of this even make sense? idek. i might just be projecting my on identity issues on him lmao
