YES!

I'm all for "write whatever you want" and honestly there's not a lot of information on magical jobs (tbf, the wizarding community is fairly small so there's probably more out there but the jobs were too "mundane" for HP canon) but I do agree that seeing Sebastian as an Auror is unlikely.

Personally, I've loved imagining him as a healer. Aside from Anne's curse, he loves doing his own research involving magic (albeit, the Dark Arts, but magic regardless) and there's a part of me that sees that it would be the perfect redemption arc for him. Someone who experienced the tragedy of what Anne went through, plus his research, PLUS (if he's really changed) giving back by helping others. I've said this in other circles, but I tend to think of it as someone who wants to study medicine to help others who have gone through something that they witnessed a close family member or friend experience.

And yeah, with the veritaserum and interrogation, it would make it pretty impossible if we're using the HL story as his background.

This is just my personal take, but I've also seen some fantastic Auror!Sebastian fics. This is nothing against people who write him this way! That's the fun part about fanfic - we're given so little to work with in canon that the way you write it can make it work no matter what you decide!

I’ll probably get cancelled for this but I can not, in good conscience, wrap my head around the “Sebastian Sallow is an Auror” future.

You’re telling me, that Sebastian Sallow, gets a job as an auror when he grows up?

The same Sebastian who bends and breaks rules in the pursuit of knowledge. Sebastian, who disregards authority at every turn, who without second thoughts, throws himself into dangerous situations if it has a small bit of promise to prove his theories right, grows up to be a wizard cop?

Sebastian, who has a strenuous relationship with his uncle Solomon, who used to BE an auror, would actively choose the same line of work as him? Especially after everything he’s done and made Sebastian feel through out his life, he would choose to be an auror?

I don’t buy it.

Because Sebastian continuously shows that he cares more about helping others more directly. Whether it’s by teaching them spells, trying to find cures or even standing up and preparing to duel in their defense.

Sebastian would likely be a professor, healer, curse breaker or possibly some freelance researcher who travels all over the world in pursuit of more knowledge about magic and theories lost to time.

Plus, I think he’d choose a career where he could put all the things he’s learned about dark magic to use in a positive light. Whether it’s teaching others how to defend against it, heal people being ailed by it or even preventing it from getting in the wrong hands.

An Auror would be faced with the possibility of having to use the curses again and Sebastian wouldn’t want to do that. (Plus let’s not forget, to become an Auror you have to undergo a grueling interrogation under the influence of veritaserum and he literally could never pass)

Idk I’m just rambling and this is just my personal take on the future careers of the characters so take it with a grain of salt. (Auror Sebastian is just a dnf for me bc I genuinely do not see him ever choosing the same career as his abusive uncle, he would want to separate himself from everything to do with him.)

TL;DR: Making Sebastian Sallow an Auror is the same thing as Harry Potter becoming and Auror and neither one of them would ever be cops

We've seen people come, and go, and come back, and go again. Sometimes it can feel alienating, or we get random loser bullies. We can put all this effort into something we've created and then get disappointed with the reactions or the algorithm deciding to hide our posts. But I see you, I love what you're doing, I am happy that you're here, and do not be so hard on yourself! (I say this and will spiral later lol). We're all human (most of us anyway lol), and this special place would not exist without us.

hi, i just wanted to tell you that i think your ability to write historically accurate stories is so impressive. it takes a lot of care and effort in my mind, and i think it rlly pays off in elsie’s story. it’s tasteful, it’s transportive and i just rlly enjoy getting a look into her world b4 hogwarts and how she struggles to navigate going between the two. (enjoy sounds sadistic all things considered, but hopefully yknow what i mean)

also LOVE that her sister that eventually goes to HOGWARTS WITH HER???? i’m obsessed with that. i’m not caught up to that part yet but i saw it mentioned in one of your posts and i am so excited to see all the havoc i can only imagine lil miss girl is gonna cause ♡

right where you left me: Commentary Edition

This is the results for this poll! Below is my personal commentary of my oneshot 'right where you left me.' When I refer to MC, I will be using 'she' as that is how they are referred to in the one shot.

To begin, this fic idea came from a prompt idea (linked in the fic) where the MC dies, but Sebastian had a portrait commissioned of her in secret before she did. I left how the MC died as ambiguous, but it could be interpreted as either post-Catacomb or post-Ranrok. When I wrote it, I had 'post-Catacomb' in mind because it solidifies Sebastian blaming himself, but both ideas work well! I didn't define it on purpose because either way, the reader is gone and Sebastian is devastated.

The HC I also go off of is that the portrait doesn't wake until the real person is deceased. So MC doesn't realize she died until she wakes up as the portrait in the Undercroft. The cold could be from the Undercroft, or that portraits aren't actually human so the MC is only a fragment of what they once were.

Based on canon, portraits remember more based on how powerful the wizard was. Example, the Headmasters' portraits used to advise future Headmasters in the office, or the Keepers' portraits in the Map Chamber. While MC may be a powerful witch, she was also only 15 when she died, so her mindset is forever frozen as a teenager. Hence why she can't make as much sense of the situation, the concept of Sebastian and Ominis aging, and seems to forget details of her life.

The purpose of this fic was to illustrate the grieving process. I had a few requests to make a part 2 where everything was resolved and Sebastian and Ominis realize they messed up by abandoning the portrait but I just couldn't. The point of it was to leave the reader feeling that empty feeling that grief sort of leaves us in after loss.

In the beginning of the fic, we see bits of how Ominis and Sebastian are grieving from the reader's perspective. But as the fic continues, we learn that the portrait (us) is going through her own grieving process too, but in a very stagnant way, as portraits aren't able to develop. She's frozen in the state she was left in.

I'll keep the ending up to interpretation and this yap is so disorganized LOL but if you read this, thanks for staying through to the end! <3

I haven't shared a WIP in a while, so here's a snippet I'm working on of my fic Extracurricular

It was quiet, at least, when she walked in the door. Most of the tables were vacant, save for a few that were taken up by the locals that she didn’t recognize — obviously not uni students, considering they were several decades older than she was.

No distractions and a change of environment. It might have been out of her comfort zone, but she failed to see any negatives.

She ordered her usual drink of choice, a butterscotch macchiato — fondly referred to on their menu as a ‘butterbeer’ — and chose a vacant spot by the window where she could still enjoy the sunshine. Everything seemed perfect as she set up her laptop and textbooks until, just as she was about to slip her headphones on, an irritating voice interrupted her.

“This isn’t your usual spot.”

Oh no.

Elsie sighed and tossed her headphones on the table to find herself glaring at the sleep-deprived face of Sebastian Sallow. Again.

He didn’t seem his usual perky self, the sun from the nearby window drawing attention to the dark circles under his eyes, an unusual grumpy expression on his face. Instead of looking like he was running off of energy drinks and dreams, he looked as if all traces of happiness had been drained from him, slowly and painfully.

Not exactly what she had expected.

“I wanted to try somewhere different,” she scrunched up her nose at him, her defensive tone coming out softer than she had intended. Damn her for feeling sympathetic. Her expression changed as something clicked about what he had said. “Hang on, how do you know this isn’t my usual spot?”

“Because,” he sighed, and he plopped his bag on the chair in front of her, “this is my usual study place. And you just so happen to be in my spot.”

Entitled, selfish, arrogant—

She crossed her arms stubbornly. No way in hell was he going to intimidate her to move just after she had gotten situated. “I don’t see your name on it.”

His jaw set, undeterred by her refusal, his once playful gaze nowhere to be seen. Sebastian rested his hands on the table and leaned forward until he was almost nose-to-nose with her, that scent of high-end aftershave and leather-bound books wafting off of him, burning her nostrils and making her dizzy. She swallowed nervously as he spoke a low warning.

“I’m going to need you to move.”

YAP TIME!!

I went to a school with a fairly strict dress code a la girls had to wear long skirts and boys had to wear a tie and collared shirt. We also had many stairs we had to go up and down because it was connected with a church so if Hogwarts let me wear pants, believe me, I'd ONLY be wearing pants. My priority with school dress was COMFORT so I'd be wearing two versions of the outfit - sweaters when it's cold, and an unbuttoned vest when it's warm. Also stairs, and flying. And most likely, my tie would be loose because sensory issues.

I want to know what Hogwarts Legacy uniform YOU would wear if you attended in 1890?

I'd either wear the Elegant Blazer Uniform (left) or the Stylish Blazer School Uniform (right). I'm not much of a skirt person irl.

So I have a weird thing with usernames. I love for them to be something oddly specific but mundane at the same time. Idk if that makes any sense. I'd tell you some of my other usernames as examples but then I'd have to kill you lol. So bookdust came from me wanting something writing-related but a little whimsical (nothing is whimsical like dust I guess lol). I started with the username on ao3 without plans of making socials for my writing everywhere else; so it wasn't available in other places. Tumblr became bookie-bookdust. Bookie is what most people call me (and you can too if you want 😉😏)
