Unpopular opinion but I think #CancelCulture can be a great thing. No, I don't think every celebrity should be "cancelled" for tiny mistakes or missteps. We're all human. But I like the idea of calling out things that are wrong or problematic. Messaging underaged girls? Cancel. Try to become the face of quarantine and then fly to Europe for a$$? Cancel. Try to push harmful weight loss products by preying on insecurity? Cancel. Pushing/participating in bullying people? Cancel. Own a shady charity that lines your pockets? Cancel. Bitch and moan about being quarantined with all your money and family? Cancel. Decide a pandemic is the perfect time to unveil and push your ridiculous organic wine? Cancel.

In general I would love to see all celebrities cancelled. The unrealistic expectations caused by attempting to emulate these people is so harmful. Of course you can stay in great shape! You have a nutritionist, trainer, personal gyms and unlimited time to focus. If you're so bored in quarantine, I'm super happy to trade places with you. I come in close contact with damn near 100 people at multiple locations a day who either refuse to wear masks or refuse to socially distance. I will gladly stay home while you go to my nonessential job made essential because you can't keep your asses at home. I feel like quarantine is the perfect time to realize that celebrities, be they actors, athletes, singers, Influencers or Kardashians, are self absorbed, entitled, selfish, narcissistic, douchebags. To let go of the idea that we need to be something other than ourselves because of these people. Cancel them all.

Since celebrities need groups for concerts and set production, social distancing could wipe out the culture of celebrity worship.

Week 14

After hearing about Anonymous in class, I was immediately curious about how they were so organized whiteout any official leadership. It didn’t make sense to me that Anonymous was able to successfully organize protests and allow people to become part of the community without any clear sense of leadership. However, after reading Coleman’s article it makes sense that the IRC is in control of kicking people out of the group. This method contrasts with society so sharply due to our culture in regard to celebrity worshiping. As a society, and as social media has become more prevalent, we focus heavily on celebrities’ lives. It is also worth nothing that their anti-leader perspective seems to stem from the way society is run and lead currently. Right now, it seems that the government and the upperclass (the 1-3%) run everything. Anonymous shakes up society by being against the hierarchy that we accept and often do not question.
