Heirloom Alert! And my favorite heirloom at that. Here's the story: My Great-Great-(Great?) Grandfather Abraham Rightmyer (which he changed to Richtmyer and then Richtmeyer within the span of a year) was a senator in New York in the 1840s. After having several threats laid upon his life, Abraham took it upon himself to have some sort of protection. So, he handmade himself the most James Bond-esque walking stick that a man from the 1840s could hope for. What a badass. The story goes that he did, in fact, get attacked by two men one night while walking home, and killed one of them with the triangular blade hidden within the cane. I love the engraved details and the patina on the blade (some of my family believing that patina to be remnants of bloodstain...) #LoveLoveLove #Heirloom #Antique #AntiquesAreSexy #Homemade #WalkingStick #1840s #YankeeIngenuity #History #Badass #JamesBond https://www.instagram.com/p/CmAGhaKPR2L/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

If you were wondering when my obsession with (and fierce protection of) antique books began, it started before I could spell the word "careful"! 🤣 I think I should get this printed on a poster to hang over the shelves that house my collection... #LoveLoveLove #LoveYourselfFirst #LoveYourselfAlways #AntiquesAreSexy #Antiquarian #GrimmsFairytales https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp_h_vhu4cB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Stanislavski seemed to think Coquelin was worth mentioning, so I figured he might be worth reading! 'Shadows of the Stage' was just a happy extra I found in the search! #Antiquarian #AntiquesAreSexy #Coquelin #Stanislavski #TheArtOfTheActor #ShadowsOfTheStage https://www.instagram.com/p/CpLpvxlOQ38/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

One of my favorite views in this world. The first time I saw this roll-drop, I was about 8 years old. At that time, it had already been viewed by countless audiences for over a hundred years. Ella Haegert (to me, Ella Bella) had taken me to see 'Man of La Mancha'. Though, it wasn't until I saw 'Mame' several years later that I knew I wanted to be behind that roll-drop one day. Will forever be proud to be a Goshen Player! ❤❤❤ #LoveLoveLove #GoshenPlayers #Thespian #CommunityTheatre #Theatre #History #AntiquesAreSexy (at Goshen Players, Inc.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpAnKxjuAbj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today's antique is brought to you by my Great Uncle Robert Doyle, on my father's side, as well as the gasoline rationing regulations of the Second World War. These were issued beginning in 1942, 2 years before my dad was born. In order to receive one, you had to prove that: a) you were in need of gasoline b) you were in possession of no more than 5 tires.* The B-3 designation on my Great-Uncles card would have signified that he was a in a vocation that would require him to use more US gallons per week than the standard citizen.** While it may be a little worse for wear, it's still a cool part of history! *Due to rubber shortages at the time, all excess tires were confiscated by the US Government. So, if you were smart, you sure as hell weren't driving recklessly enough to risk moving onto your 5th tire. The US Gov also imposed a national speed limit of 35 mph in order to help you economize on fuel & the amount of rubber you were burning. **we civilians would have only been allowed up to 4 US gallons, max. #AntiquesAreSexy #Antique #1942 #WWII https://www.instagram.com/p/CnqJAqHLVUs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

One of the most gorgeous pieces of one of the most gorgeous buildings in Litchfield. The steeple of the old Courthouse. Interesting fact - the buildings in the center of Litchfield are all made of stone, due to street-wide fires in 1886 and 1888 that burned the original town center to the ground. After that devastating incident, all building permits for wooden structures were revoked - meaning, masonry was the way to go. #LoveLoveLove #LitchfieldCT #BeautifulNWCT #History #OldCourthouse #AntiquesAreSexy (at Litchfield, Connecticut) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmSPOW5uCPT/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

While we're on the subject of spelling, this copy of Seventy Lessons in Spelling has seen fewer, and slightly better, days than Mr. Swinton's work - but whether that's due to better care, or lack of use on the part of Miss Bessy P. Burns, we may never know. Published in 1907, also by the American Book Company, this primer likes to mix words like, 'parochial', 'bamboozle' and 'spirituous' in the same lesson. Because every good church-goer should know how to hoodwink people while getting drunk... seems legit. #LoveLoveLove #Antique #Antiquing #SeventyLessonsInSpelling #AntiquesAreSexy #AmericanBookCompany #1906 https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl9xRyKPBJa/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Usually, when we say something has, "seen better days", it's not because it's been around since 1873. This well-loved copy of Swinton's Word Primer (Written by William Swinton, A.M., and published by the American Book Company from the press of Ivison, Blakeman & Company) was clearly owned by a student who actually enjoyed doing their homework! A miracle, to be sure 😂 This mystery student lived at 45 Gurg Street, but that's about all we know. Swinton wrote several other word-related books. (I'd love to get my hands on a copy of, "Rambles Among Words", because it sounds delightful!) #LoveLoveLove #Antique #SwintonsWordPrimer #1873 #AmericanBookCompany #IvisonBlakemanAndCompany #AntiquesAreSexy #AntiqueBook #Antiquarian #NerdForLife https://www.instagram.com/p/ClwQ4nsr08U/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
