Dagger’s Daycare|| o.4

Synopsis: Maverick finds himself in a situation he cant explain. The daggers are unavailable, and he finds himself in need of help from his old crew. Of cause this wasn't the reunion they expected.

Slider frowned slightly as he pulled up garage door attached to his house. He hadn't been in here for a while, he had been busy recently between working and helping wood move into his new house, having move after retiring from the Navy. He had bought a house only two streets down from Wolf. His baby was had a layer of dust on it, her paint was peeling slightly. He had owned her for years, only retiring her when he had get another car. It wasn't the best look for an admiral to be driving a minivan, at least not an old one like this anyway. He had always loved minivans, unlike Wolf who’s go to car’s was a Ford Ranger. Or Wood’s Mazda, or Ice’s Toyota Rav4. He had grown up in a minivan. His mother had owned one through his entire childhood, the silver stout scarab. It was one of the things he remembered most, so when the dodge caravan first came out when he was first going into the academy he bought it. Continuing the tradition through the years as he updated, he had upgraded a few years ago to a Toyota sienna. The light of his life. He got crap from the others about his obsession with the vans but he never took the words to heart. It had been used as a transport vehicle through the years with the crew. He truly did favor the Sienna more then the others, the baby sat 8 people comfortably. He ran a hand over the smooth silver paint with a loving smile, “Alright darling, lets get you a breath of fresh air”. //

Ice parked the car of to the side of the driveway to stay out of the way. Leaving a rather large gap for the van to drive on once they retrieved it from the jungle Wolf called a yard. Hell did the man ever mow?

Wolf jumped out of the car, walking towards the side of his house where his black van was parked. He had bought it a few years ago after an old friend of his wanted to get rid f it and never really used it.

Ice turned of the engine and stepped out of the car to see if Wolf needed any help getting the old thing started.

Wolf jogged over to a power box and pulled out a key, Ice raised an eyebrow the man grinned.

“Snooping Neighbors” he offered as he walked over to the gate pulling it open to get to the van. It looked old, unused nothing Ice would ever willingly get into.

Wolf patted it on the wide, “Come on girl lets get you up and ready for some cargo”. He opened the door leaning in as he turned the key and pressed down on the petal to get the car to rumble. It kicked a few times before the engine started, Wolf let out a victorious cry.

“Lead the way metal man” Wolf cried out as he pulled the door shut and started slowly driving it out of the yard.

Ice shook his head with a sigh out of all of them why had he chosen Wolf for this job?

He walked back down the yard to his car slipping into the seat, backing out carefully and lead the van down the road. Once they were sure the old piece of junk could drive, Wolf waved him off and Ice lead the van into town towards the baby store ‘baby bunting’.

This was going to be a long trip. //

While Wood wore a confident smile, he was anything but. Being left alone with kids sure. 1 or 2, no problem. But 7 kids, alone with Maverick on top of that. He was in no way prepared for the chaos about to be pursued.

He twisted his head again a small strain in his neck from the way his head had been swinging from side to side in an attempt to count the kids.

1,2. Bradley was jumping on the couch as a darker skinned boy edged him on, “Do it. Do it. Do it”.

3,4,5. The boy with fluffy brown hair that had previously been playing with Bradley had now moved away from them. He was siting curiously in front of the two boys in the corner.

They had only shifted enough so the protective kid could cuddle into the quiet blonds side.

He could hear the the boy talking quietly, “Hola. Podemos ser amigos”. The darker skinned boy turned his face away from the blonds neck and frowned at the foreigon language slightly.

Bloody hell no one had told him he would be expected to know other languages.

6,7. The girl, Phoenix was laying down with her head on the younger boy - who looked younger then them all - stomach.

He pushed his glasses up slightly as his rubbed his nose. Both of their eyes were shut, apparently having decided to take a nap.

He shifted over to them taking a light weight blanket off the couch to wrap around them both. He tucked it into Phoenix side slightly first. Her hand coming out to wrap around the fabric, turning on her side so she was facing Bob. He then wrapped the other side of the large blanket into Bob’s side so that it covered them both.

Bob reached out blindly but instead of gripping the blanket his hand wrapped itself in Phoenix hair. Not pulling on it but just holding the strand as if assuring himself she was still there.

Maverick was leaning cover the kitchen bench, having moved out of the room after Bradley had caught sight of him again and attempted to get him to play with him by pulling on his pant leg. It had overwhelmed the man, despite the two being on good grounds it had reminded him how much he had missed.

Wood moved around the kids from the living room to the open kitchen. He walked around the kitchen island and placed a comforting hand on the younger mans shoulder he left a constant vigilant gaze on the kids. “Are you ok?” he asked quietly felling the tremors flooding Mavericks body.

Maverick’s voice was rough and choked, “Yeah” he said hoarsely, Maverick lifted his head giving him a shaky smile. “Its just” he waved his hand in an attempt of an explanation, “a lot” he finished lamely.

It was a nightmare and a half, for all of them. He couldn't imagine what it would be like for Maverick. They had all seen Bradley at the funeral, but Maverick practically lived with the Bradshaw's.

The last time he would have seen Bradley this happy at this age was when Goose was still alive, the family visit half way through Top Gun. He remembered it faintly, seeing the odd family singing away at the piano.

He rubbed Mavericks back ripping his eyes away from the kids for a moment to frown lightly in concern. This was normally Ice’s job, he always knew how to deal with Maverick.

He turned back to the kids letting Maverick have a moment to himself.

He looked around the room for anything the kids could play with to keep occupied without waking the other tw- wait 8?

“7?” he frowned at Wood, his own eyes moving around the room to count. “They're 7 kids here Wood.

Wood left out a breath of relief, God Ice was right. He’s not good with numbers. Guilty he snatched the shopping list note pad magnet off the fridge and took the pen out of its holder, Maverick laughed lightly shaking his head.

“Ice?” Mav asked in amusement.

“Ice” Wood grumbled, “Point them out for me” he huffed.

Natasha and Robert, Bradley and Reuben, Jake, Javy and Micky. That solved that issue now that he knew which name went to which group.

“Did you” Wood hesitated, Maverick leaned leaning his hip against the bench frowning at him. Wolf sighed there was no other way to say it. “Have you seen Ice recently?” he asked.

Maverick opened his mouth to argue, defend him wingman but then he paused. His frown deepening as he thought over his words carefully, “We talk over the phone. But I haven't seen him in a while” he admitted. “At least not for a year or more” he shrugged unconcerned, “We've been busy”.

“Did you notice anything wrong with him?” Wood asked carefully aware that Maverick was fiercely protective of the man. “He seamed different. Distant” he added.

Maverick looked uncertain for a moment before a young hand pulled at his jeans, “Mav can we go play now” Bradley asked, Maverick sent Wood a look.

“Sure bud, well play”, Maverick gripped the boys hand letting himself be pulled away. The conversation left in the air. Wood watched as Maverick got roped into playing a game with Bradley and Reuben. He kept a close eye on the boys in the corner, Micky was still babbling away at the two not noticing the language barrier and Javy seamed content to lay in Jake’s lap. This was going to be a wild day, he huffed lightly stepping out of the kitchen taking the note pad with him. Ensuring his phone was off silent, if anything went wrong he want to make sure he would hear it. He really regretting accepting Maverick’s invitation now.

Yesterday I had to replace the thermostat in my car. I own a Toyota sienna, and yes I love my van. Anyways, I went in took it apart put in the themostat put it back together filled it with fluid, when I hear a big splash as all the coolant came out. I cried a little trying to figure out what I did wrong and then it hit me. The stupid thermostat didn't have an o ring on it. You have to buy those separately. Talk about capitalism! I had to go back to Autozone ask for the stupid o ring. Go back take it all apart again, and this time it is now 730pm so it was dark out side. But this time before putting it all back together and having blind faith in myself. I checked to see if any of it was spilling out. Everything seemed good so I put it all back together and took it for a little drive. It seems to be working well. We will find out in a few days if that was the problem with my car over heating.

Life has been crazy lately. We moved to New Mexico about a month ago. We are currently living in a house on base. We’ve never lived on base before. I bought a new van last week. With three kids and an equinox something needed to change. I love my Toyota Sienna though. Never thought I’d be that mom. Blake (5) is having the hardest time adjusting. He cries a lot to go back to Florida and see his friends. Adam (2) doesn’t really care. He’s officially potty trained now. Only took three days in undies for him to get it. I’m proud. Carter is 3 months and the best baby ever. He’s found his hands so he’s constantly sticking them in his mouth. He sleeps through the night. I’m talking 730 to 6 almost every night.

We didn’t sell our house in Florida so we put it up for rent and found renters that same day. So the mortgage is getting paid and then some. It’s nice. Except there’s hurricane Michael coming right for our area. Hopefully my tenants put the shutters up and my house remains intact. I’m so nervous.

Rick is working weird shifts here. But that’s usually what happens when you’re the new guy. We have fall family pictures tomorrow night and I’m really excited. Because of carters two weeks in the nicu when he was born, I never got newborn photos. So now we just decided we need new family photos to put up of all of us 😍😘

Rick and I are also doing the keto diet. It’s been a month and I’ve lost six pounds.... I was hoping for more but I’ll stick with it to see if it works. It has helped my back though. I have some severe lower back pain when I wake in the morning and apparently it can be inflammation caused by sugar. So I cut the sugar out and my back has been much better. So strange.

Anyways that’s my life right now.

My experience shopping for a family car

Hi all. Long time lurker. Just wanted to share my recent experiences - both to simply share, and also to get some outside perspective. For context, I am in Canada.

I have pregnant wife and a dog, and we have senior parents we drive around. We have a sedan and an aging hatchback, so the latter is out and a family car is in.

I've always had a soft spot for the Ford Flex, so I decided to start there. I have no anti-minivan sentiment, so there isn't typical crossover appeal in my makeup as a consumer. I honestly like the future-classic styling.

I first drove a N/A (no ecoboost). I found it a bit weak on the throttle, but reasonable. My wife and I through the overall comfort was okay for passengers, but even at being just under 6'0, I did not find I had enough legroom as the driver. I wasn't a fan of the cargo space, which was surprisingly limited with the seats down. I drove an ecoboost for comparison sake, as I've seen it stated many times on this subreddit that folks often regret passing on it. Perhaps I just expected more, but I didn't find it to be the "SHO wagon" I craved. It was okay, and I figured we'd pass on it and stick with the N/A version. However, the more I looked over the car, the more I found I didn't like it. The fit and finish felt weak, and the doors were massive. The vehicle as a whole feels dated, and you can tell Ford is just waiting for it to pass off into the sunset as they will kill it off soon. We decided to pass and moved on.

I decided to check out the VW Alltrack. I love wagons, but I didn't get far with this one. It's just shamefully under-powered and left me craving more. Also, the style of the seat just didn't jive with me, and I kept sitting on my god damned balls. We moved pretty quick from the Alltrack to our next option.

I've always loved Volvos, so we had a look at the brand new 2019 v60. God damn, is this car a stunner, and amazingly comfortable once you're inside, but it is also super low to the ground. Getting into the drivers seat requires a bit of a trust fall, and simulating dealing with a car seat killed it for us as I've got some back issues to contend with. We learned through this process that we were looking at the wrong cars, and should entertain something physically higher.

I decided to have a look at the Subaru Ascent. The current marketing is pushing this as a true 7 seater family car, but we quickly realized this was a farce. With the 3rd row up, the trunk space is minimal. I was actually shocked at how little remained. The legroom for both the second and third row was weak, and I could not sit up straight in the third row. Kids could work there, but no adults, and if you did have a family full of kids for a weekend trip, there is no where to pack anything. We didn't even drive it, because there was no point. I really wanted to see how that 4 banger would pull that truck around, but I didn't get the chance to as I didn't want to waste the salespersons time on a car I quickly realized was not good for us.

We never considered a van up until this point because it felt like killing a fly with a sledge hammer, but I'm a practical guy, and once we started thinking about it, I got excited about the utility.

Some online searching led me to knock out the Dodge Caravan and Toyota Sienna for safety reasons. The Dodge didn't surprise me, but Toyota dragging an 8 year minivan along does/did. I was not impressed to learn that after failing drivers side small overlap tests in 2015 (I think that's when it was), they reinforced the drivers side, but not the passengers side, which has led them again to have a poor safety rating. I get that these are rare accidents, and Toyota does put a lot of electrical system assists like auto braking and that jazz to mitigate it even on the base model now, but this killed it for me. Call me paranoid, but I'd never forgive myself if something happened to my wife and I knew this was a fault. I was really excited about the AWD option, but alas, no Toyota. I never even looked at the Dodge, but I did check out the Toyota for shits and giggles. I found that it had a nice, flat entry point for the sliding door and ample room with the seat slid up to access the 3rd row. But on the negative side, the interior is really dated, and in my taste, really ugly. Comfort was fine, though.

I was left with three options. The Kia Sedona, the Honda Odyssey, and the Chyrsler Pacifica.

I first checked out the Odyssey. With the sliding door open, the entry point is not flat and flushed, and raised a bit towards the back. I could see our senior parents tripping. I also didn't like how access to the third row was poor when the second row had all 3 seats equipped. You can tilt the second row, but it kicks the sliding rails up in the air, making for a bad tripping hazard. I felt frustrated by this design and decided to leave it, look at something else, and the come back.

It was time for the Sedona. Kia sales staff were living up to the terrible stereotype, and it took half an hour to just look at one. They took me to an SXL top trim model. I don't know much about Kia and don't have any reason to dislike them. I've heard a lot of good things, but I was not impressed with my first interactions when it came to quality of materials an feel. The door was light, the plastics glossy and tacky, and the console felt super dated. I really didn't like how it had the whole car-like center console thing going with the larger shiftier. For comparison, the Odyssey has buttons and the Pacifica has a puck. Those two get a lot of flak, but in my opinion, I much prefer those to a stick in an auto tranny. The Honda's buttons are super nice as you don't have to run through gears and you just pick what you need. It's different, but it works. Anyways, I digress. I was not digging the feel, but the Kia did have some neat stuff like front facing cameras. You do get a lot of bells and whistles, but I was focused on the core. We drove it and I found the new 8 speed transmission was really jumpy and hunting. Throttle response was really lame, with a lot of lag, and I wasn't feeling it from there out. I cut the drive short. I don't think I've ever been as eager to get out of a car as I was with the Sedona. If I were riding in the second row, I'd probably dig it as those are some nice seats, but as the driver, I was miserable. I left in a bit of shock and exclaimed to my wife that I didn't understand how this car won so many accolades. Clearly, it pleases someone, but not me. It's also priced very close to everything else, so I'm not feeling the value initiative.

Next up was the Pacifica. It's fun to shit on FCA, but I recently rented a Durango and enjoyed it (I was going to look at one but we decided to shop vans and that was before we got the Durango, so alas, it never got fully considered). The fit and finish was decent, but there is a juxtaposition between really nice touches, like a beautiful dash and really nice feelings leathers, to shitty plastic center consoles and unpleasant carpets. You get to known the carpets really well with the stow and go seats, which, from an engineering and practicality standpoint, are super cool. But they cost you in comfort. You sit with your hips low to the foor, and you knees up. My wife pointed out that none of our parents could sit like that for long. I imagine you lose some interior room to this system, as this was also the only van where I hit my back on the ceiling when crawling to the third row. None the less, we took it for a rip and the pentastar engine was really delightful. It has the notorious 9-speed ZF (which is also in the Odyssey with different software unless you go for the top touring/elite trim). I actually really liked the drive, but the drivers seat is very vertical, and I felt more and more fatigue as the drive went out. Power delivery was good, it shifted smooth, and I enjoyed it, but when we took a closer look at options when we got back to the dealership, we found you had to go to the higher trims to get items that were available in the middle of the pack of other vans (blind spot, adaptive cruise, etc). The Pacifica has a really great adaptive cruise that goes right down to stop and go traffic speeds, but I didn't want to spend upwards for 50 grand for that. My wife couldn't get comfortable in the seats and tried out a vehicle with fabric trim, and that was just bad. All in all, a very mixed bag with high highs and low lows. I was also disappointed to learn there is no spare offered (maybe on the base model, I'm not sure, but not on the touring L and up that we looked at. You lose it for an inflation kit or a vacuum.

We went back to the Honda and I tore out the middle seat in the showroom. But taking that out of the second row you can slide the seats in 4 directions, which makes it easier to just keep the damn car seat in and still throw old people or a dog in the back. The second row is also a lot comfier than the Pacifica due to the lack of stow and go. I wanted to drive the 10 speed, but their only demo was an ex-l, so I went for a spin. Out of all the vans, I felt most comfortable driving the Honda as it just 'clicked' with me. The infotainment system is also my favourite out of everything I tried, and the cameras/screen were really clear. I'd spent some time in a 2014 Crosstour before, and those blind spot cameras are so blurry you can't rely on them for a quick glance, but this system would be valuable for locating blindspot cyclists and the like. Accelerating was a bit chirpy, and I spun the wheels more often than I expected to, but this was much preferred over the sleepy Sedonda. We tried to work out a deal, but I was not satisfied with a 5% discount and decided to walk, thinking I may revisit this closer to when the baby is due, and see if I can score a CPO 2018.

It's worth noting the final 3 we considered have very similar stats and offerings. Similar power output and options. I find the Pacifica and Odyssey to be my preferred from the bunch, and would likely be looking at the Chrysler more if I though I'd use the stow and go seats on the regular (would be amazing for camping trips). But passenger comfort is a bigger concern. I also don't give a fuck about the entertainment systems, so we skipped that. With USB chargers and iPads, we could see no reason to shell out thousands more for propriety systems that offer less.

So, there you have it. I did leave out some details due to length, but just wanted to share in case someone else finds my thoughts useful, and I'm also curious to know what people think about what I think.

2004 Toyota Sienna Power Sliding Door Repair

Mark: Hi, it’s Mark from Top Local, we’re here with Bernie Pawlik, Pawlik Automotive in Vancouver, 18 time winners of Best Auto Repair in Vancouver as voted by their customers. How’re you doing Bernie?

Bernie: I’m doing very well.

Mark: So, we’re going to talk about a Toyota Sienna, a little bit of an older one, a 2004 and you had to do a sliding door repair. What was going on with this van.

Bernie: Well, this is a full featured Toyota Sienna van with all the nice power operated sliding doors. So there’s a button inside, if you’re sitting in the seats, of course, not while you’re driving, it won’t operate but when you’re stopped and it’s in park or your vehicle is off, you can push a button and the door goes gheee and it opens up and you can push the button again and the door closes. You can also do the doors with the key fob which is very handy when you’ve got a child in one arm ad a bag of groceries in the other, well I’m not sure about the other hand, but if you got a kid in one arm you can hit a button, door pops open and you can plunk him in the car seat, which is absolutely fantastic. So the passenger side door would not operate in the push button mode, you could manually pull a handle and the door would open and with the power operation still worked it would power close but with the button it would not operate.

Mark: So how do you diagnose a concern like this?

Bernie: Well we’d start with connecting a scan tool. There are electronics inside the door and as you’ll see in a video I’m going to show in a few minutes, it’s actually extremely complex inside this door but there are electronics associated with it so we can get some diagnostic trouble codes and information. But what it really came down to with this particular vehicle is actually opening the door, taking the door panel off, looking at the mechanism and just getting familiar with what it operates the vehicle and what components actually control that power operation and then testing individual components.

Mark: And what did you find was wrong with the door?

Bernie: What was wrong with this door is that there’s an actuator motor that actually pulls the door latch open, much like, it basically attaches to the same section of the door latch as your door handle would do, but instead this is an electric motor. So that motor was dead and that’s what’s causing issues. So I’m just going to share a video here of the inside of the door and how it works. I apologize the video is a little on the dark side but it kind of gives you an idea of what’s inside this door and what moves and how it works. So here we go. No talking comments…so that’s the door latch, the actual actuator motor that was problematic was this piece here and in a little while you’ll see this is actually the door panel installed with a new motor in. So that’s the problem right there. This is panning through the door so there’s another motor back there that actually moves the door back and forth, here’s the control unit for the door you can see there is a lot of wiring involved in this piece. And just to put it in perspective, this is only the passenger door, there’s a drivers door as well. So this is the door in operation and see the latch move there, door opening, a little view of our dirty wall of our shop, and the door closing. There’s a lot of cables, rods, actuators, there’s a lot of pieces here, as you can see it’s extremely complex. And I’m back.

Mark: So it looks awfully complicated, did this turn out to be a pretty expensive repair?

Bernie: It did actually, it was a very expensive repair. I like this example because, typically we tend to think that when you own a high end European car like a Mercedes or BMW, you’re spending an awful lot of money to repair it whereas, if you own a Toyota you’re not spending so much but in the case of this vehicle this repair came up to about, I think it was somewhere, it was well over a $1000 to repair this. Now the motor was a few hundred dollars but what made the repair so expensive, there was some diagnostic costs involved, but what made the repair so expensive was actually the way it was built. That motor, stupidly is actually bolted in from the back side of that, there’s a big panel about a foot and a half long with all the actuators and rods and they actually bolt that panel on, but the motor that we replaced was actually bolted from the backside of the panel, so you have to take the window out of the door, you have to pull the panel off and then from there you have to undo the screws, but the screws are tiny and they’re basically locked tight into the bolts, so we had to cut the screws off. Just like way too much work involved. They could of bolted the piece to the outside of the panel, really simple repair but I mean it would of saved the customer four or five hundred dollars in labour if was done that way. So anyways, it was an expensive repair and as I say, it’s an example of people ask me, well you know, what kind of car should I buy, what’s the cheapest to fix? Well you know generally if you’re avoiding a luxury European car, you’re saving on cost but it’s not always true. Sometimes the Japanese car could end up being far more expensive than the more expensive European car. And you know the thing about this vehicle, this again is the complexity of having those luxury features of you know, you hit a button and the door opens, well if you didn’t have that feature, if you just had a manual slide open door, you wouldn’t have this problem. So if you can avoid the power options, it’ll save you a lot of money in the long run but I mean I agree, I like the power options, they’re nice to have. There’s a price to be paid for them.

Mark: So is this is fairly typical for power doors?

Bernie: Yeah, they’re all basically like that. They all have those extra mechanisms in there to operate and I’d say this one seems a little extra complicated compared to some. But yeah, I mean typically these are the components that need to be in there. There’s motors to move the doors, there’s a motor of course to open the door, and so yeah, this is pretty typical on any vehicle with a power sliding door.

Mark: Sure, so you’ve spoken very highly over a number of videos about Toyota’s and their reliability, does this change your opinion of Toyota?

Bernie: No, not at all, I mean this is you know, this is a 2004 as you mentioned earlier, it’s a 13 year old vehicle at this point, you know things are bound to break down and wear out, you know, my only opinion as I mentioned a few minutes ago, is it’s kind of stupidly built the way they put this together, a little less thoughtful than usual for something like a Toyota I find. But you know, but overall they’re still great vehicles and you know again, 13 years, very reliable, I’m sure this door has been opened and closed hundred or thousands of times in that lifespan. So it’s pretty good.
