hi! i just finished ahr volume 13 so i’m done w/ this tag. here are my thoughts:

volume 6 is my favorite. i just love the accidental kiss and all the drama following it. 

vol 10 & 11 comes in close behind, as well as those earlier volumes like 3 and 4. 

the earlier ones are simpler and better in a different way than the later ones. they’re pure and sweet imo. 

i didn’t really care about vol 13 that much but that’s just a me thing because i’m not a big endings person. objectively it is a good ending though, very nicely paced.

my favorite character is probably kou. like i didn’t have that much of an attachment to most of the characters. 

what is ahr about? (premise -> actual plot)

the premise was brought up mostly near the end; it’s on every volume description but it’s kinda irrelevant for most of the story. they do reference it quite a bit.

what ao haru ride is actually about is: it’s a high school SOL about liking people who are also liked by others. it’s about how one relationship can involve so many others intertwined in the process, whether good or bad. it’s about liking someone who doesn’t associate actions with feelings. 

ok cool! i’ve never really read a series like this (this is kinda my first shoujo) and it turned out really great!

the author clears it up in a side panel but the accidental kiss in ch20 is so confusing.. it’s probably because it’s manga but it looks like it lasts much longer than it actually does. i imagine it would be like a quick bump in reality but if it was long enough that toma saw it?? idk

i don’t ship it particularly but this is for PLOT

i think toma’s major flaw is his lack of self esteem (ex: how he’s always telling futuba how much he likes her). like he’s understanding, but not truly. he’s very much “nice guy” and i get flashbacks bcuz i knew someone like him 💀💀

i found it very frustrating because the guy i knew, he was very kind to me but he would never take agency or actually seem to care. (also, he was horrible behind my back but that’s not the case with ahr).

back to ahr -> toma is just very, nice guy.

ahr vol 8 (24-27)

that volume was kinda boring... i read it in like 30 minutes.

half of it is like shuko/tanaka stuff which i just didn’t really like? the other half is the aftermath of the last book but i feel like a lot of the actions don’t really have consquences. kou is ignoring futaba but actually he’s not actually ignoring her and then we just forget about it. 

i root for touma but also he gets a bit pushy at times.

ahr is less about the premise (the premise is like totally dropped after the second volume) and more about liking a popular boy.

i say boy because this is definitely a story in futaba’s pov, even though it’s 3rd pov. it’s interesting bcuz he’s pretty well liked by everyone (and she is too) but they have like a deeper connection that no other girl really has with him yk

yeah its just like a default high school romance tho :) i appreciate it because i feel like it’s very realistic and that’s rare in animanga

i love this so much!! i love how there’s pretty realistic stuff keeping them apart and still together; i feel like this is a story that could legitimately happen at my high school.

since i have never read this series before i am wondering a lot about what keeps them apart for so long.. like what are the other volumes about? a lot of their problems seem to be solved (ex: yuri’s crush) but i liked how it was handled; i just wonder what’s gonna be the rest of the series.

the status quo rn is kinda like: they act like a couple but they don’t have a label or anything. kou’s just naturally, idk how to put this, cool and popular, so even though they had that really intimate emotional moment he might not actually want to pursue a relationship. plus, he teases her a lot + they’ve already denied liking each other (i loved that aspect!!)

tldr- very realistic dynamics of a high schoolers mind
