How affordable is Portugal?

One of the best things about this welcoming nation is its affordability. A glass of the local beer (Super Bock) won’t cost you much more than a dollar and a decent three-course dinner (with wine, of course) can be had for $15-20 if you eat where the locals eat and avoid the touristy restaurants.

How do you find a place to stay during peak season in Portugal

There are some brilliant hostels, guest houses and Airbnbs in every part of the country too, so finding accommodation is a simple matter of planning ahead.

If you’re intending a longer-term visit, apartments in some of the most stunning parts of Portugal can be rented for a few hundred dollars a month. Even in the peak season (July-August), you can normally find a place to stay.

Which is cheaper – Portugal or Spain?

Many people believe Spain is the cheapest place to travel around in Western Europe. Visit the extraordinary castles and forested parks of Sintra, where there seem to be brilliant views from every vantage point.

At Cascais, stroll along the esplanade and enjoy the family-friendly beaches, where sunbathers from all over the world share the sand with Portuguese kids building massive sandcastles.

I’d recommend walking around and taking in the sights of your chosen city. 

My favourite city – Porto

If I had to pick a favourite Portuguese city, it would probably be Porto. Situated at the mouth of the Douro River, its charms include a wealth of ancient churches, museums, palaces, cathedrals and fortresses to explore. A boat cruise up the river on a wine-tasting tour is a must-do in Porto.

But some of this city’s simplest pleasures are free, like strolling through the hills and across the picturesque river bridges on your way to a riverside tapas bar. It’s an ideal base for day trips too. I can recommend checking out the pretty towns of Guimaraes and Braga as well as a train trip through the lushness of the Douro Valley on the way to Pinhao.

If you’ve never eaten octopus before, now’s your chance. It’s a specialty in this part of Portugal and is truly delicious. You should definitely try the Iberian Pork and a tasty fish called dourada while you’re here as well.

Where are the best beaches?

Portugal boasts around 800 kilometres of coastline, with some of the nicest being found along the southern coast in the Algarve region. Hugging the Atlantic, this country is a sun-worshiper’s paradise with heaps of dazzling, blue-sky days. You can also always find your own relaxing stretch of sand as there’s loads of room.

How do Portuguese beaches compare to the rest of Europe?

I stayed in a small Algarve town called Carvoeira, which has a lovely beach in the heart of town as well as some more private spots within walking distance.

One of the best ways to explore this spectacular stretch of coast is to hop on a boat tour from Carvoeira. These take you right along the base of the cliffs to investigate some of Portugal’s most picturesque sea caves.

One thing that surprised me about the beaches in Portugal was how refreshing the water was. In June when the temperature was in the low 30s, I found a dip in the ocean to be bliss.

This entire section of coast is an intriguing mixture of sandy beaches, rocky headlands, scenic sea caves and a smattering of cheap but excellent cliff-top cafes. Further north, you’ll find quality swimming beaches at Baleal (an hour’s drive north of Lisbon) and Praia de Adraga, further up the coast.

If you like your beaches quiet, and free from cafes and other man-made distractions, head to Praia Forte do Paco. Here you’ll find 800 metres of luscious sand dunes, warm, shallow rock pools and an 18th-century fort close by.

Despite the warm weather, the water is very refreshing. 

Outdoor activities to do in Portugal:

Portugal has more adrenaline-pumping activities going on than you’ll ever be able to fit into a single trip. With world-famous surf breaks, kayak-worthy rivers and mountainous grandeur, you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied in the great outdoors. Here’s just a small sampling of what you can get up to:

1. Bungee jumping at the Albufeira Marina

This one’s a classic. You ride 40 metres up in the air in a crane and then bungee jump off a platform, dunking your head in the cool waters of the Atlantic before bouncing back up again.

2. Horse riding in the Costa Azul

This is a unique way to experience a gorgeous part of Portugal – gallop along white-sand beaches and through forested hills dotted with cork trees. Local stables (such as Cabalos na Areia) can fix you up with horse treks lasting a couple of hours or much longer – they even offer week-long riding excursions.

3. Mountain biking in the Lousa Mountains

Near the inland city of Coimbra, you’ll find the enchanting Lousa mountains. There are bike trails that wind through a mixture of rocky terrain, shady forest, river crossings and sand patches, where the creeks are ideal for cooling off after a hard ride.

Over two dozen villages are scattered throughout these hills, so you can stop for a quick bite and a rest along the way. There are popular abseiling and rock climbing spots here too.

4. Surfing safari at Ericeira

Portugal has some of the best surfing waves on the planet. So, if you can find a rental car big enough to store your board, you’ll be in heaven. The right-hand barrel at Ericeira is world famous, but there are plenty of lesser-known gems to discover too.

If you’re a beginner surfer, try Guincho Beach at Cascais or Amado on the Costa Vicentina.

5. Kayaking in Douro River National Park

The upper Douro is home to some amazing scenery and plentiful wildlife. This includes wild boar and – if you’re really lucky to see them – some of the rare wolves left in the country.

6. Hiking in the Serra da Estrela

The ‘Mountain of the Stars’ National Park features some of the finest mountain scenery in Portugal with deep ravines, granite peaks and glacial valleys. Doctors asked if she’d eaten any uncooked poultry. A staunch vegetarian, Birch said no. Then they asked if she had come into contact with any animals recently, and she remembered her feline friend.

Next came more tests, which helped the medical team discover that she had contracted the infection from a living animal.

“Once they found out, they weren’t worried. They said I’d get better at home with bedrest,” Birch recalls. “But I got worse. I couldn’t walk. I kept falling and losing my balance.”

Her symptoms, inconsistent food poisoning, led Birch to make repeated appointments with her general practitioner, who kept telling her to just get more rest.

“Eventually I stopped going because I felt like I was bugging them,” Birch says. “But you just know when it’s something else.”

Then, two weeks after leaving the hospital — three weeks after returning from Portugal — Birch woke up around 3 a.m. because she’d fallen out of bed.

“I couldn’t feel my legs on the sheets or my feet on the carpet,” she explains. “I started scratching my legs so hard that they bled, but I still couldn’t feel it. I screamed for my dad, and he took me to the hospital.”

In the emergency room, Birch says she googled her symptoms and the campylobacter bacteria, which turned up three words: Guillain-Barré syndrome. GBS is a neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its nervous system, according to the NIH.

When she showed her research to the doctor, he told her GBS was rare, Birch says, but agreed to run tests. When she woke the next morning, her symptoms were considerably worse.

“The night before, I could still move my legs a little bit, but the next morning, I couldn’t move them at all. My arms were really weak and I needed help breathing,” Birch says. She was temporarily paralyzed, a common symptom of GBS.

That day she received her official diagnosis, and for the next month she stayed in the hospital receiving immunoglobulin treatments, which added antibodies to her system. Then she was transferred to a hospital with neurology experts in Liverpool, where she stayed for another month before she moved to a rehab center. For four months, she tried to combat her paralysis from the neck down.

“I didn’t want to go [to the rehab center] because it was far from home, but it was the best decision I could’ve made,” Birch recalls. “I remember a nurse asked me what my goal was, and I told her it was to dance at New Year’s Eve on my own.”

At the time, the summer was coming to a close, so the nurse asked her to pick a “more realistic goal.” But, Birch says, “I did it. I danced at New Year’s Eve [2016] with crutches.”

It took her a year to learn how to do basic physical tasks again, like “walking, writing and picking up a mug.” And all the while, she was taking university classes because she wanted to graduate on time alongside her twin sister.

“I just thought, GBS has taken everything from me, but it’s not going to take away my degree,” she says.

These days Birch is able to work, drive and maintain her lifestyle blog, Sorsasta. But GBS symptoms often pop up, for example after exercising too much. She starts to get tremors so severe she’s been unable to drive herself home from the gym.

And since GBS affects the immune system, she gets sick more easily than before. There have been four times since she left rehab that a cold has landed her in crutches.

Looking back, Birch recalls one of the scariest things about her experience was learning the name of the condition.

“The word ‘syndrome’ was overwhelming because, to me, it means ‘for life,’ ” she says, adding that it’s incredibly rare to contract GBS from touching a live animal. Uncooked poultry is a more common source.

According to WebMD, GBS is most common in people older than 50 — Birch recalls meeting two older women suffering from it in the rehab center — but it can strike at any time. It’s also unclear exactly how the disease progresses. Some cases have originated from Zika virus while others start from germs, like Birch’s.

Armação de Pêra – this mysterious name refers to a charming town situated between the biggest city of Algarve - Faro, and a popular resort on the south of Portugal – Lagos. Armação de Pêra is a perfect place for couples looking for intimate and romantic atmosphere, families with children and anyone who would like to avoid crowded public beaches, streets or restaurants. Although, in the peak season starting from the beginning of July and finishing at the end of August, vast amount of tourists (mostly the Portuguese) come to spend their holiday here, there is still enough space on the beach for everyone. Moreover, people generally behave well and they respect each other.

THE BEACH

The main public sandy beach called Praia de Armação de Pêra, which is over one kilometer long, borders with rugged and verdant cliffs on the western end. On the eastern side, at the outskirts of the tourist resorts, it naturally opens up and transforms into another beach, Praia de Grande Pera. Next to the main entrance from the slightly elevated promenade and from the handicap-friendly ramps, there are sun-beds with umbrellas, for 14-15 euro to rent for 2 people per day, stands with food and drinks, and free of charge toilets. The further from the main entrance, the more intimacy you will have, especially if you are heading east.

It is very pleasurable to take a walko along the Praia de Armação de Pêra. In the early morning, when the sun is not so unbearable, there are many joggers there. EATING ON THE BEACH

The most restaurants are situated by the promenade, though there are a few, which are placed on the beach, like: the posh Arte Náutica with an amazing view on the beach and the ocean, and also more price-friendly restaurant Buzio.  

SHOPPING

The town's market place is absolutely amazing. It offers variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as fish, seafood, homemade preserves (jams, piri-piri sauces) and a lot more. To get to the butcher's, who sells ecological meat and crafted cheeses, you have to get a number, becuase there is always a queue there!  TIP: The best tactic is to get your number first and then go and do your shopping elsewhere. When you come back to the queue, it's no problem, you will be served according to the number's order.

There is a bakery near the town's market. It is also worth getting up early and going shopping in the morning, because the best bread is selling out quickly. Few steps further, there is a mini market and the big supermarket is situated near the resort district, where the family houses estate is as well.   

EATING OUT

There are the most restaurants and coffee shops can be found along the main treadmill, which links directly to promenade. Unfortunately, these are the most expensive places to eat, so if you are looking for something more budget-firendly, find a bar on the outskirts of town, where the locals come. The main served dishes are fish and seafood, paella, grilled meat, Mediterranean specialities and salads. Vegetarians and vegan have not a lot to choose from, although the staff is very helpful and is always trying to find a solution. Unusual dish, which is 100 % plat-based, is Migas, made of stale bread, garlic and olive oil, cooked together in boiling water and then sprinkled with a lot of fresh coriander. This traditional meal is available in almost every restaurant, and even if it's not on the menu - just ask, the chef will probably make it especially for you! The best restaurant for meals without meat is a bio restaurant Boca Xica, where you have to try tofu - it's so delicious!   

ACCOMMODATION

I recommend AirBnB and Filipa's, who is a vibrant and helpful young woman, apartments. She can speak English, so there's no problem with communication. The four of us slept in one of her 6-beds apartment, which was situated in front of the promanade and offered big terrace, two bedrooms, living room and fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. TRANSPORT

It is possible to get directly to Faro, Lagos and Albufeira from Armação de Pêra. The prices are:

4.85 euro to Faro,

4.85 euro to Lagos,

4.25 euro to Albufeira.

The best way of travelling around is by car. It is worth having a look around nearby car rentals to find the best deal. Autorocha doesn't require deposit when you are paying in advance (cash or card). We rented Hyundai i20 with air-conditioning and full insurance for four days. The petrol cost around 1.60 euro for liter. Moreover, the rental company will provide a device with a sensor, which attached to the central car mirror, sums up all the highway's charges. It sumps up after a few days, therefore it is necessary to leave you debit or credit card details when signing up.
