How Globalization Impacted Job Losses
The Manufacturing Sector: The Rise of Outsourcing
Globalization brought about a wave of outsourcing, with companies seeking cheaper labor costs overseas. This shift in production had a significant impact on manufacturing jobs, which were once the backbone of many economies. Developed countries experienced substantial job losses as factories closed and production moved to regions with lower labor costs. The International Labor Organization (ILO) reports that between 1991 and 2013, the share of global manufacturing employment in high-income countries declined from 25% to 15%, while it increased in low-income countries from 17% to 23%.
As manufacturing jobs dwindled, new opportunities arose in the digital realm. Industries like web development, graphic design, and app development witnessed increased demand as businesses adapted to the changing landscape. Professionals with the right skill sets found themselves at the forefront of this digital revolution, capitalizing on the growing need for web-based services and digital products.
Victims of Globalization: Navigating Economic Disruption
Workers in industries affected by globalization faced numerous challenges as their jobs disappeared. Traditional manufacturing hubs experienced unemployment, declining wages, and socioeconomic disparities. In an Economic Policy Institute (EPI) report, between 2001 and 2013, the United States lost 5.6 million manufacturing jobs, leading to significant economic dislocation in affected communities.
The victims of globalization had to adapt and seek opportunities in emerging industries to stay relevant in the job market. They recognized the need to upskill and reskill themselves to align with the changing demands of the globalized economy. Professions such as public relations, and copywriting became vital for businesses to tell their story as they adjusted their strategies to compete in the global marketplace. Workers who successfully navigated the challenges of globalization embraced the need for continuous learning and professional development.
The Need for Adaptation: Upskilling in a Changing World
Workers who recognized the need for adaptation during the era of globalization embraced upskilling and reskilling. They understood that acquiring new skills aligned with emerging industries was crucial to securing new job opportunities. As digitalization gained momentum, professions like [web design], [web hosting], and [media buying] emerged as sought-after skill sets.
Upskilling played a vital role in equipping individuals with the necessary tools to thrive in a changing world. The World Economic Forum has reported that 54% of all employees will require significant reskilling and upskilling by 2022. Workers who stayed ahead of the curve positioned themselves for the new job opportunities that arose, leveraging their newfound skills in the digital realm.
By recognizing the need for adaptation and investing in upskilling efforts, individuals were able to navigate the disruptive forces of globalization, demonstrating the importance of continuous learning and professional growth in a rapidly evolving job market.
The Rise of AI Disruption
The Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness of AI Disruption: Enhancing Business Operations
Similar to the reasons behind outsourcing during globalization, AI presents businesses with the opportunity to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Automation powered by AI can perform tasks more efficiently and at a lower cost than human labor. Accenture is also reporting that AI has the potential to increase labor productivity by up to 40% by 2035.
AI disruption not only streamlines existing processes but also creates new roles in AI ethics, machine learning, data analysis, and related fields. For instance, LinkedIn postings mentioning “GPT” grew by 51% from 2021 to 2022, showcasing the growing interest in AI-driven tools that produce written content on command. Similarly, Indeed witnessed a more than 140% surge in mentions of “language model” in job postings from February 2020 to the present.

Marketing and Advertising Job Disruption: Transforming the Industry
The marketing and advertising industry is experiencing profound disruption from AI technologies. AI-powered algorithms and tools are revolutionizing processes such as SEO optimization, data analysis, and WordPress web development. Automation and machine learning algorithms enable marketers to leverage vast amounts of data to gain insights and create targeted, personalized campaigns. Salesforce says a recent survey they conducted found that 51% of marketers are already using AI, and another 27% are planning to incorporate it into their marketing strategies.
While certain tasks within the marketing and advertising field are becoming automated, AI disruption also brings forth new opportunities for professionals who can effectively leverage AI technologies. These individuals can deliver creative and data-driven solutions, utilizing AI to optimize customer targeting, personalize messaging, and enhance campaign performance.
Embracing Automation: Jobs Going Away and New Opportunities Arising
AI’s potential to eliminate human error, increase efficiency, and enhance productivity makes it an attractive solution for various industries. As AI automation replaces certain jobs, it is important to recognize that new opportunities also arise. Professionals who embrace upskilling in AI-related fields position themselves for success in the evolving job market.
Industries such as graphic design, app development, and digital marketing services provide avenues for professionals to thrive in the AI-driven era. For instance, graphic designers can collaborate with AI-powered tools to enhance their creative process and deliver visually stunning designs. App developers can leverage AI to create intelligent applications that offer personalized user experiences. In the realm of digital marketing, professionals who combine their domain expertise with AI technologies can drive impactful campaigns, optimize conversion rates, and achieve targeted customer engagement.
By embracing automation and upskilling in AI-related fields, professionals can stay ahead of the curve, leveraging the transformative power of AI to navigate the changing job landscape and unlock new opportunities for growth and success.
Comparing Globalization and AI Disruption
The Speed of Disruption: AI’s Rapid Impact
One key distinction between globalization and AI disruption is the speed of transformation. While globalization unfolded gradually over several decades, AI disruption is occurring at an accelerated pace. The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2025, automation and AI technologies will have a disruptive impact on the workforce, resulting in the displacement of 85 million jobs worldwide.
Jobs that were once considered secure are now at risk due to AI automation. The McKinsey Global Institute estimates that approximately 800 million jobs could be automated by 2030. Workers need to be proactive in adapting their skills and embracing new roles to keep pace with AI’s rapid advancement. In a PwC report, up to 30% of jobs in the United Kingdom are at high risk of automation within the next 15 years.

Upskilling: A Key to Success in the Face of AI Disruption
Just as workers affected by globalization had to upskill to adapt to the post-industrial economy, today’s professionals need to acquire new skills to work alongside AI technologies. Upskilling is a critical strategy to ensure employability and career resilience in the face of AI disruption. Industries that are less susceptible to automation, such as [public relations], [copywriting], and [media buying], require a blend of human expertise and AI assistance.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report highlights the importance of upskilling, with 94% of business leaders believing that employees must learn new skills throughout their working lives. Companies like Amazon have embraced upskilling programs to equip their workforce with the necessary skills to collaborate effectively with AI technologies.
Learning from the Past: Avoiding the Pitfalls of Globalization
The victims of globalization provide valuable lessons for navigating AI disruption. By recognizing the importance of upskilling and embracing new opportunities early on, workers can proactively shape their future. Governments and businesses should collaborate to create supportive policies, regulations, and initiatives that protect jobs and ensure a smooth transition into the AI-enabled era.
Germany’s Industry 4.0 initiative serves as an example of proactive policies aimed at supporting workers through digital transformation. The initiative focuses on upskilling and reskilling programs, fostering a culture of lifelong learning, and promoting the responsible integration of AI technologies in industries.
Learning from the lessons of globalization, it is crucial to prioritize a human-centric approach to AI adoption. By investing in training and education programs, individuals can acquire the skills needed to work collaboratively with AI technologies, minimizing the risk of job displacement and fostering a future where humans and AI can coexist harmoniously.
Navigating the Future: Adapting to AI Disruption
The Importance of Lifelong Learning and Upskilling
As AI continues to reshape the job market, the importance of lifelong learning and upskilling becomes paramount. Professionals must embrace a growth mindset and actively seek opportunities to acquire new skills. The World Economic Forum says that by 2025, over 50% of all employees will require significant reskilling and upskilling to remain relevant in their current roles.
Online courses, certifications, and workshops offer accessible avenues for acquiring expertise in emerging fields like AI ethics, machine learning, and data analysis. Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning provide a wide range of courses to help individuals stay ahead of the curve. By investing in continuous learning, individuals can remain agile and relevant in the face of AI disruption, enhancing their employability and career prospects.
Government Regulations and Social Considerations
To mitigate the impact of AI job disruption, governments have a crucial role to play in implementing regulations and policies that prioritize job protection and reskilling initiatives. They can work in collaboration with businesses, educational institutions, and industry experts to develop comprehensive frameworks that address the challenges posed by AI disruption.
Social considerations must also be taken into account. Businesses face increasing pressure from consumers, employees, and society as a whole to maintain human employment and promote responsible AI practices. Ethical considerations, such as transparency, fairness, and accountability in AI decision-making, should be integrated into the development and deployment of AI technologies.
By striking a balance between technological advancement and ethical employment practices, societies can foster a future where AI coexists with a thriving human workforce. Collaborative efforts between governments, businesses, and communities are essential to creating supportive environments that promote job security, skill development, and inclusive growth.
Building Resilience: Embracing New Roles and Industries
Building resilience in the face of AI disruption involves embracing new roles and industries that align with the evolving job market. Professionals can explore opportunities in fields such as [web design], [web development], [app development], and [public relations]. These industries require a blend of technical expertise and human creativity, making them less susceptible to full automation.
Embracing these new roles and industries requires a proactive approach to upskilling and adapting to changing job requirements. Individuals can seek specialized training programs, join professional communities, and participate in industry conferences to stay updated with the latest trends and technologies.
Furthermore, fostering interdisciplinary skills and a diverse skill set can enhance resilience in the face of AI disruption. The ability to collaborate across domains and leverage both technical and non-technical expertise becomes increasingly valuable. By adapting and expanding their skill sets, individuals can position themselves for success in the AI-driven future, leveraging AI technologies as tools rather than viewing them as threats to job security.
As we navigate the transformative era of AI disruption, it is crucial for individuals, businesses, and governments to embrace continuous learning, prioritize ethical considerations, and foster a supportive environment that empowers individuals to adapt, innovate, and thrive in the evolving job landscape. Together, we can shape a future where AI augments human capabilities, unlocking new possibilities for productivity, creativity, and economic growth.

Fitness activities have recently become the go-to for finding dates. However, joining a running club for romance isn’t for everyone. So if you want to dip your toe into the world of fitness-based dating before signing up for that volleyball league, ClassPass has you covered. The booking platform is launching a nation-wide “Sweat Your Heart Out” series, which features workout sessions that are actually singles events in sweaty disguise. “Sweat Your Heart Out” classes will take place on February 12 and 13 cities across the U.S. at six different venues, including gyms, workout studios, and even indoor golf clubs. Everyone is welcome, whether you’re looking for love or friendship. The idea is for fitness, sports, and exercise to be that social lubricant for mingling magic. The series launches just in time for Valentine’s Day, but the concept is based on larger trends in fitness and dating. Social isolation and a renewed interest in wellness and outdoor activities in the wake of the pandemic have made running clubs and rec leagues popular spots for intentionally meeting new people. Dating app fatigue has made people seek out activities and venues that bring back meeting people IRL. ClassPass says its own 2024 user data supports these trends: “Community-centric” sports like volleyball saw a big boost in 2024, as did soccer and even ice skating. Dating workout classes can be awkward—how are you supposed to flirt while huffing and puffing? But exercising with a prospective partner can also be a way to develop a relationship, building bonds and even getting you ~in the mood~ (with all that heavy breathing and blood flowing). Plus, ClassPass is hoping to help out with the social aspect of it by providing ice breaker and bingo cards, as well as cards that let someone know you want them to get in touch with you in the future. And if you’re the type of person who says “hell yes” to a fitness dating event, meeting over exercise is also a great way to ensure you’ll be connecting with someone with mutual interests. The venues include four interval training studios: Barry’s in New York City, Fusion Integrated Training in Detroit, Train Moment in Milwaukee, and Shred415 in Louisville, Seattle, Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis. The 12, a gym based in Costa Mesa, California, will also host, and indoor golf club Five Iron Golf will hold events in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, and Cincinnati. The events will cost the same as a standard workout class at their studios. You can find the full lineup below and book a spot via ClassPass or directly through the studio, If you do, we hope it’s your sweatiest Valentine’s Day ever—both during the class and maybe even with your new workout “buddy” afterward. 'Sweat Your Heart Out' singles workout classes Find the cities, studio locations, dates, and times for all "Sweat Your Heart Out" classes below. Moreover, the availability of cost-effective betting applications is expected to favor market growth over the forecast period. According to the data published by the New York state government, over 650,000 unique accounts were created on mobile betting apps in 2021.
Online gambling developers have partnered with online casino software suppliers to cater to the demand for immersive casino games. For instance, in February 2023, the Sisal subsidiary of Flutter Entertainment Plc. got its license for online gambling in Morocco from La Marcocaine des Jeux et des Sports (MDJS). For instance, in January 2023, FanDuel subsidiary of Flutter Entertainment Plc. launched a mobile sports betting platform in Ohio and announced its Sportsbook launch at Belterra Park Cincinnati.
The outbreak of COVID-19 played a crucial role in expediting the online gambling demand as people spent most of their time indoors and opted for online games for leisure. For instance, in May 2021, a study by the University of Bristol showed regular online gamblers were more than six times more likely to gamble online than pre-pandemic. Besides, adopting various options for digital payments with safe payment gateways is also stimulating the adoption of online gambling applications. The increased adoption of digital currency and websites provided by betting and gambling companies will further accelerate market growth.

Having a Mobile Friendly Website is No Longer Optional – It’s a MUST
Tumblr media
The original iPhone was released on June 29th, 2007. Although the iPhone was far from being the first mobile device, it did change the mobile landscape forever. Prior to the iPhone, using the Internet away from a desktop or laptop was limited to watered-down webpages that rendered as text. But because the iPhone included a full online browsing experience through Safari, it kicked off an explosion in the mobile web.
Mobile’s Evolution Over the Last 9 Years
While the mobile web as we know it today is less than a decade old, it’s already gone through several evolutions. The first was the app gold rush. In addition to the Safari browser, Apple also launched the idea of apps with their device. This led to developers and businesses rushing to create apps. However, it became clear that most people don’t want to use a dedicated app for every business they’re interested in. This is supported by recent research which shows that most people use less than a half dozen apps on a regular basis.
Since it doesn’t make sense for most small to medium businesses to have a dedicated app, there was also a time during the last nine years when the focus was on having a separate mobile website. The reason that the trend has come and gone is there were several major problems. Not only did it create an often frustrating experience for website visitors, but it also required businesses to manage two different websites.
Why Responsive Design is The Best Solution for Mobile
Multiple studies have confirmed that mobile is now the most common way that people of all ages search online and visit websites. So even though it doesn’t make sense for most businesses to have an app or separate mobile version of their website, having an optimized mobile presence is a MUST!
The option that has emerged as the best mobile solution for businesses is responsive website design. With this approach, a website will automatically resize to a screen of any size. That means a site will load quickly, look great and offer full functionality on any mobile device, tablet or standard computer. And unlike the previous approach of having two versions of a website, responsive design is done through one set of code, which makes it very easy to manage.
How do you know if your current website has an optimized responsive design and is fully mobile friendly? The best way is to use Google’s free mobile-friendly test tool.
What If You Don’t Pass the Mobile-Friendly Test?
If you don’t pass Google’s test, it almost guarantees that your site isn’t ranking as well as it should for mobile searches. It also means that visitors who do come to your site via a mobile device are more likely to abandon it due to a less than optimal experience.
Since those issues mean your business is missing out on potential revenue every day, you need to fix them as soon as possible. That’s where Web Strategy Plus can help. With our responsive web design services, we can fully update your site to ensure it’s completely mobile friendly.
To get your site’s mobile problem solved as soon as possible, contact us now for a free consultation and quote!

Ok 2022 wrap up. First the good:
* killed it at work and on schedule for a huge jump in salary in january 2023
* finally let go of the worst years of my life by *gasp* leaning in2 and committing to my present self???
*moved to a banging new apartment WITH kitchen island
*volunteered for midterm campaigns
*went to chicago, cincinnati, honolulu and st. louis
*READ like 80% more this year than last year (the bar was the like 2 books i picked at and didnt finish last year but still improvement)
*more consistent with skincare routine
*hit 50k in my one savings acct in accordance w financial goals
THE BAD:
*didnt learn a new language, instrument, to code, pottery, or anything. Was grinding at work and not much else
*health took a backseat: too much doordash no fitness plan or even much activity
*didnt make any new friends
*stagnated in other areas. No volunteering for causes i care abt or even at community garden. mUST CHANGE THIS IN 2023
*struggled to stay consistent with much of anything. Scatterbrained for most of the year
THE UGLY:
*lost all muscle tone due to nothing other than lack of care
*no motivation. No real direction. No real sense or vision of the future i want and am working towards. No effort in the places where it counted
*phone and screen addiction. BIG TIME. losing hrs to this that i should be using to get out there and meet ppl and actually improve my quality of life LOL.
*deep-seated suspicion that im not well-liked at work bore out late this year. Not super pleased since that's been my main focus. Probably connected to this other stuff.
*loss of basic intellectual curiosity. In complete survival mode for the first 8 months of the year. Self is almost unrecognizable in many ways.
THE RESOLUTIONS:
I've spent the month of december devoting myself to prepping for the big three resolutions that i feel will have the biggest impact on my immediate health and wellbeing. I did a recipe plan for every day of december and gave myself a zero doordash/restaurant rule but no other real restrictions on what recipes i make and that's gone super well in terms of re-integrating cooking regularly back into my life and even enjoying it! I think in february im going to start paying more attention to making sure im incorporating the plate method to ensure im getting the right proportion of protein veg and carbs into my diet but for now its all about finding recipes that taste good and that i can sustainably replicate etc. I've been doing a lot to make sure im brushing my teeth and doing my skincare routine at least every morning so im going to start bumping up my evening care in January as well. I also downloaded the none2run app to get me up to a 5k which at least lays out the calendar of what i need to do and im on week 2?? I think of the beginner exercises before starting the runs in earnest. I've deep cleaned my apartment and kitchen and have been regularly washing my clothes and doing the dishes instead of letting it all pile up. All of these changes in routine have been gradual over the last 5 weeks or so but its already paying dividends and i love the idea of prepping for resolutions and planning them out so i don't lose track as the year progresses:
*Journal at least once a week (minimum 52 entries by this time next year)
*Develop nourishing recipes you actually enjoy and can replicate. Limit restaurants to once a week (non-holiday) or 3 times a week (with holidays)
*complete none2run 5k.
*sign back up for barre classes at least once a week (non-travel)
*on work travel, complete youtube pilates vid at least twice a week
*this is the year to tackle skin texture and pores. Set up derm appt in January
*complete liftoff program for beginner weightlifting beginning in June.
*volunteer for minimum 2 hrs each week. For anything.
*volunteer for dems at least once this year.
*SEE A FUCKING PSYCHIATRIST
*take one extra-curricular class
*check in quarterly on goals
*take one international trip

Building a Two-Sided Marketplace With Regina Gwynn …And uncovering the specificities of your target market.
TresseNoire’s Story
Regina: TresseNoire has been up and running since 2013, but this latest product is a pivot from our original premise, which was to create the first on-demand, on-location beauty booking app that would send a traveling textured hairstylist to your house, hotel, or office to do your hair. Our mission has always stayed the same: it is to give women back the most important resource on Earth, which is time. And we tried to think through multiple ways of doing that by allowing us to find out faster and easier ways to simplify the beautification process. For women of color with textured hair, there are lots of pain points. Everywhere from finding the right products to finding the right stylist, to maintaining the right hairstyles to finding the right long-term maintenance for your hair.
So we kicked off with this on-demand, on-location beauty booking app, which was very successful. We started off in Philadelphia, expanded to New York, and ended up with stylists in Philly, New York, Washington, DC, LA, Dallas, Texas, and Cincinnati. It was through that experience that I became, I guess, a tech founder, which is also a whole separate conversation. You know, I definitely was a non-technical founder, with a background in fashion and beauty prior to my entrepreneurship journey. But it also introduced a very large opportunity with taking the on-demand technologies that we had seen grow like Uber, FreshDirect, and all these other kinds of business models and apply them to the beauty industry.
We kept getting so many questions from our clients. “Okay, so now the stylist has left, I love my hairstyle. Now, what do I do? How do I maintain this hairstyle?” or “What products should I be getting in the beauty supply store?” And so I found myself doing so many additional phone calls, whether it was me advising the client, connecting them to our stylists either before, during, or after the hairstyles. We realized that there was an even bigger opportunity. Through the access to education and personalization, every single client was different, they had a different hair type a different hairstyle, they lived in a different location, they had different hair needs, whether it was fitting edges, or split ends, or dry hair or super curly hair.
So there were all these different variables that to my co-founder: “If we’re in this tech industry, and we have all these tech tools available to us, why aren’t we using all of these unique criteria to develop a more accurate system, a more accurate process?” That was the impetus behind pivoting to our virtual beauty coach app. Now, our clients can take a quiz. We gather 28 points of data to determine the kind of beauty regimen that works for them, and that education is delivered through a text message. So you interact with our beauty coach via phone, and you can actually change the algorithm based on the information you give us. So if it’s raining outside, then we’ll say hey, it’s raining, don’t forget your umbrella. And if you change your hairstyle, then we’ll change the education based on the data that the client provides.
We’re still in private beta, and we definitely have learned a ton this year, in a lot of the iterations that we’ve been working on. But I’m really excited about the long-term opportunities of providing this technology to additional beauty brands. The idea is to make sure that we’re getting education around our specific hair journey and making that type of information available to everyone.
Building a Two-Sided Marketplace
Andy: That’s really exciting because you went from being an entrepreneur that was using technology to build her product and her services to being a tech entrepreneur, and building a tech product. And I imagine that was a very different experience from both sides of the coin. I want to dive a little bit deeper into that, starting with the on-demand service platform that you provided, and the lessons that you learned while you were trying to scale that business into different markets.
Every market is a different market, and I’m sure you had to adapt to each market. What was it like to build an on-demand service?
Regina: Building marketplaces is really hard. Building two-sided marketplaces is even harder. Do you have to start building the offer or the demand?
In addition, understanding the nuances in the type of customer demand was essential to tailor our offer to each market. As we started to move forward, we realized that marketplaces are really hard.
When we look at Glamsquad and other beauty booking app type models, we see that they’ve been around since 2011, have raised over $30 million, and to date, are still in less than 10 markets. It’s become very clear that there was some very inherent kind of long-term challenges that we were going to face while identifying that there were other pain points.
Uncovering the Specificities of Your Target Market
Andy: How did you uncover the specificities of each market? What kind of data did you collect to inform your decisions?
Regina: Social media is really useful. We have a modest amount of followers, probably around 10,000 across Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. They actually were the main indicator. When we would look at our audience, scroll through the pictures and see what are women wearing in Dallas, New York, Austin, Texas, LA, etc. That way we could see a very different consumer, from market to market.
We took that information along with talking to our stylists. So we always had at least a few boots on the ground in any market that we went into, and between my co-founder and I, we have networks across the country. We always wanted to just pick up the phone and talk to a girlfriend and say: “Hey, what’s going on in that area? What are the hot spots? Who are the arbiters of culture in that area?” Then we would follow them and watch them in order to find out where the beauty trends are going.

SOCIAL MEDIA FRIENDS
As far as friendships I think social media has been one of the driving forces behind that when I was in college. This was a way of meeting new people to hang out with considering we were all new to the common area. Some of my best friends I made in college came through Instagram. This social media app allowed me to look at peoples post and develop an idea of what they might be interested in. It was a good way to find people with similar interests as me as well as mutual friends.
I would say maintaining relationships over social media has been a huge portion of my life. Especially with all of my highschool friends who have moved all over the country. For example my best friend is now playing baseball at the university of Cincinnati which is hours away from me. He’s constantly busy and never has time to come home so the only way to maintain such a strong friendship was through social media. Whether it’s his personal account or the team account I have the ability to see what’s going on during his life on the outside in.
Personally I’ve never ended a relationship over social media. This has always been something I feel needs to be done in person. Relationships and friends are very valuable and I feel social media has taught me this.

The Real 2020 Season: Week 3
Hello everyone, welcome to Week 3 of The Real 2020 Season! We’re imagining how things would have gone in the 2020 football season if COVID hadn’t ruined everything.
Check out the previous weeks here if you’d like a bit of context: Week 0, Week 1, Week 2
-
The Rankings
Week 3 AP Poll
1. Clemson 2-0 (2-0) 2. Alabama 2-0 (0-0) 3. Georgia 2-0 (0-0) 4. Oklahoma 2-0 (0-0) 5. Oregon 2-0 (0-0) 6. Florida 2-0 (1-0) 7. Texas 2-0 (0-0) 8. Notre Dame 2-0 9. Auburn 2-0 (0-0) 10. Texas A&M 2-0 (0-0) 11. Ohio State 1-1 (0-0) 12. Oklahoma State 2-0 (0-0) 13. Washington 2-0 (0-0) 14. LSU 1-1 (0-0) 15. UCF 2-0 (0-0) 16. Minnesota 2-0 (0-0) 17. Utah 2-0 (0-0) 18. Iowa 2-0 (0-0) 19. Indiana 2-0 (1-0) 20. USC 1-1 (0-0) 21. Cincinnati 2-0 (0-0) 22. Penn State 1-1 (0-0) 23. Missouri 2-0 (1-0) 24. Liberty 2-0 25. Memphis 2-0 (0-0)

The Narrative
The biggest news around the college football landscape are the ripples emanating from three upsets of top ten teams the week before. Ohio State’s and Penn State’s losses in particular are severely hurting the Big Ten. The whole league, widely regarded as the second strongest conference in the nation after the SEC, now more or less looks like they have no team with a wide open shot at the Playoff only 2 weeks in. It’ll be a continuing problem for the whole season. LSU’s loss to Texas in Baton Rouge shocked the defending champions, but the SEC as a whole is in a much stronger position relative to the Big Ten even with the Tigers’ loss. They have 5 teams in the top ten after all.
Oregon’s win over Ohio State finally means the PAC-12 has a legitimate Playoff contender. It has been a long time in the wilderness for the Conference of Champions but the Ducks are definitely building momentum for a huge season.
As for the G5, the AAC has a huge lead over the rest of the conferences at that level. Even if a Boise State or an App State has a huge season they’ll have to defer to the American champ unless the league eats itself.
Many teams still haven’t played a quality opponent so far in the season so there still is a lot shrouded in mystery.
-
The Games
We’re beginning to see a blending of both non-conference games as well as league play within several conferences. It still isn’t a super-exciting slate for many fans, but the game of the week is certainly the contest between #2 Alabama and #3 Georgia.
Winning teams are highlighted in bold.
Incarnate Word at Baylor UNLV at Iowa State Boston College at Kansas Vanderbilt at Kansas State Western Illinois at #12 Oklahoma State UTEP at #7 Texas Arizona at Texas Tech Maryland at West Virginia Ball State at #19 Indiana Arkansas State at Michigan San Jose State at #22 Penn State Rutgers at Temple #18 Iowa at #16 Minnesota South Dakota State at Nebraska Central Michigan at Northwestern Air Force at Purdue Appalachian State at Wisconsin Charlotte at Duke Florida Atlantic at Georgia Southern FIU at Old Dominion Marshall at Ohio Virginia Tech at Middle Tennessee #24 Liberty at Western Kentucky Prairie View A&M at Louisiana Tech SMU at North Texas #14 LSU vs Rice Jackson State at Southern Miss UAB at Miami FL Grambling State at UTSA Akron at #1 Clemson Miami OH at #21 Cincinnati Kent State at Kentucky Northern Illinois at Eastern Michigan Western Michigan at #8 Notre Dame Florida State at Boise State Northern Colorado at Colorado State New Mexico at New Mexico State Utah State at #13 Washington #17 Utah at Wyoming Nevada at South Florida UCLA at San Diego State Portland State at Oregon State #20 USC at Stanford Idaho at Washington State BYU at Arizona State Colorado at #10 Texas A&M South Alabama at #6 Florida #3 Georgia at #2 Alabama #23 Missouri at South Carolina Furman at Tennessee Arkansas at Mississippi State #9 Auburn at Ole Miss Duquesne at Coastal Carolina Louisiana at Georgia State NC State at Troy Texas State at Louisiana-Monroe Connecticut at Virginia Albany at Massachusetts Norfolk State at East Carolina Houston at #25 Memphis Navy at Tulane Northwestern State at Tulsa #15 UCF at Georgia Tech Murray State at Louisville Colgate at Syracuse Villanova at Wake Forest James Madison at North Carolina Richmond at Pittsburgh
Well it’s still not exactly a banner week. The titanic clash between #2 Alabama and #3 Georgia sort of lived up to expectations, although the Bulldogs really did look a step too slow for the Crimson Tide. It doesn’t necessarily mean that UGA is out of the Playoff race, the SEC champion will be in the Top 4 under basically any circumstances, but they’re gonna need an answer for the likely rematch with Alabama if they do make it to Atlanta.
The rest of the top five breezed through their matchups as #1 Clemson dispatched Akron and #5 Oregon brushed aside Hawaii. #4 Oklahoma was off this week. The rest of the major Playoff contenders in the top ten handled their foes easily. Aside from UGA’s loss we won’t see much of a shakeup at the top.
The only other ranked vs ranked matchup of the day belonged to #18 Iowa’s surprisingly easy victory over #16 Minnesota. With Wisconsin seeming to have taken a step back with their loss to Indiana, perhaps the Hawkeyes will return to the top of the West Division standings in the Big Ten. The only other ranked team that lost aside from Georgia and Minnesota was #20 USC on a road trip to rival Stanford. The loss is the Trojans’ second and knocks them out of the Playoff race early.
The G5 is experiencing their traditional September culling at the hands of the P5 and each other. The AAC is down to 4 undefeated teams in Cincinnati, Memphis, SMU, and UCF. The Sun Belt is sitting pretty with Coastal Carolina, Louisiana, and Troy. The Mountain West is already down to just Boise State. Conference-USA and the MAC already have 0 undefeated teams, putting them at an early disadvantage for the NY6 race. Boise does own the G5 game of the week with an easy home win over struggling Florida State.
There were several out-of-conference rivalry games being played such as WVU-Maryland, New Mexico-NMSU, and Marshall-Ohio but for the most part the results wouldn’t interest people who aren’t fans of those programs. Overall it wasn’t too exciting of a week.

The Standings
Conference games are now being played by every league, though most of the teams have still only played non-league contests. The standings are still not very indicative of real team quality of the Playoff race, but they’re still fun to look at.

The Big Picture
The Playoff picture hasn’t been altered nearly as much in the past week as it did in weeks 1 and 2. Georgia’s loss doesn’t necessarily doom them. If the Bulldogs can rally to win the East and then beat Alabama in the rematch you know they’re heading to the semifinals. However, the fact remains that even with so much talent in the SEC it’s looking like the Crimson Tide might be in a class of their own this year, with LSU and UGA seemingly unable to compete. We’ll see how Auburn, A&M, and Florida fare.
The rest of the P5 didn’t have any seismic shifts. The Big Ten is definitely still languishing in the basement after all of their top programs took Ls in their first two weeks. They all rebounded in Week 3 but that barely takes the edge off the humiliation. We could seriously be looking at a Playoff without the Big Ten for the first time since the inception of the tournament. Clemson should still run through the ACC without hassle. The Big 12 is shaping up to be contested at least, with Texas and Oklahoma State lining up behind the Sooners. Oregon is definitely leading the PAC-12, but it’s harder to trust the Ducks with going something like 12-1 even though they beat Ohio State.
Not surprisingly, the AAC is absolutely lapping the competition in the G5 race. With their win over Georgia Tech, UCF now has two P5 scalps in this young season. If they go undefeated, the Knights will again have a compelling case for inclusion in the Playoff. That may be a big if, with Cincinnati and Memphis and perhaps others providing some internal competition. The Mountain West, usually the second strongest of the G5 conferences, is once again putting all of its eggs in one basket with Boise State, the only remaining undefeated team in the league. The Sun Belt, usually one of the weakest conferences, is in a stronger position than usual, though this time it looks like either Coastal Carolina, Louisiana, or Troy will try their hand at supplanting Appalachian State. The Mountaineers already have two losses on the season. It’s unlikely that C-USA or the MAC will be able to put a team into a NY6 bowl with the way things have developed so far.

The New Rankings
Week 4 AP Poll
1. Alabama 3-0 (1-0) 2. Clemson 3-0 (2-0) 3. Oklahoma 2-0 (0-0) 4. Oregon 3-0 (0-0) 5. Florida 3-0 (1-0) 6. Texas 3-0 (0-0) 7. Notre Dame 3-0 8. Auburn 3-0 (1-0) 9. Texas A&M 3-0 (0-0) 10. Ohio State 2-1 (0-0) 11. Oklahoma State 3-0 (0-0) 12. Georgia 2-1 (0-1) 13. Washington 3-0 (0-0) 14. LSU 2-1 (0-0) 15. Iowa 3-0 (1-0) 16. UCF 3-0 (0-0) 17. Utah 3-0 (0-0) 18. Indiana 3-0 (1-0) 19. Missouri 3-0 (1-0) 20. Cincinnati 3-0 (0-0) 21. Penn State 2-1 (0-0) 22. Stanford 3-0 (2-0) 23. Liberty 3-0 24. Memphis 3-0 (1-0) 25. Miami FL 3-0 (0-0)
The polls didn’t change a whole lot because almost all of the top 25 cruised through their games against weaker opponents. Despite the relative lack of movement, we have a new #1 as Alabama supplants Clemson as the highest regarded team in the nation following their win over Georgia. The Bulldogs fell out of the Top Ten following their loss to the Tide, but only just. USC and Minnesota drop out of the polls following their losses and were replaced by Stanford and Miami.
The American remains the only G5 conference with any teams in the poll, and they have three with UCF, Cincinnati, and Memphis. Though of course the voters are keeping even those programs an arm’s length away from the top ten, UCF even fell down a spot as Iowa leapt over them following the Hawkeyes’ big win over the Gophers. It’s a hard luck world for the G5.

AI Builder for Power Platform: At Microsoft Business Application Summit in 2019, Microsoft announced Artificial Intelligence investments in the Power Platform. The Power Platform is a low code platform that enables organizations to analyze data, act on it through applications, and automate business processes. It allows everyone, from the professional developer to the frontline worker, to participate in driving better business outcomes by building apps.
It will be available for consumption on data that already exists in the Common Data Service (CDS), the enterprise-grade datastore included in the Power Platform. AI Builder is the platform for providing a low-code user experience for every developer to create and customize their PowerApps and Flows.
You can access AI Builder from the navigation pane within the PowerApps Studio or the Microsoft Flow website. The simple wizard like experience is tailored to empower every developer in keeping with the essence of the Power Platform. You can access all your AI models in a single pane under the AI Builder ‘Models’ tab, providing key information about each model upfront in a tabular format. Clicking a particular model takes you into its details page, where other key information and actions are made available to the user. You can perform actions like publish and test the model, view the model efficacy and weights of data contributing to it or view other recommended actions from the details page.
Below are the key capabilities of AI Builder that we are announcing today:
Binary Classification
Binary Classification uses historical data to predict whether new data falls into one of two categories. AI Builder binary classification is an AI model that predicts yes/no business outcomes by learning to associate historical data patterns with historical outcomes. Based on those results, the binary classification model detects learned patterns in new data to predict future outcomes. Use the binary classification AI model to explore any business question that is answered as one of two available options, such as yes/no, true/false, pass/fail, and go/no go.
Text Classification
Text Classification tags any snippet of text based on the historical data you provide. Streamline your business by automatically tagging new text. Text classification is one of the fundamental Natural Language Processing (NLP) problems. It allows tagging of text entries with tags or labels which can be used for sentiment analysis, spam detection and routing customer requests, just to name a few examples. Use AI Builder text classification with Microsoft Flow and PowerApps to automate and scale your business processes, and free your employees to act on these insights. It can also be used as an input for other AI capabilities such as subscription user churn and predictive analysis. AI Builder can learn from your previously labeled text items, and enable you to classify unstructured text data stored in Common Data Service into your own business-specific categories.
Object Detection
Object Detection lets you count, locate, and identify selected objects within any image. You can use this model in PowerApps to extract information from pictures you take with the camera. Object detection can be used to expedite or automate business processes in multiple industries. In the retail industry, it can be used to simplify the inventory management, allowing retail leaders to focus on on-site customer relationship building. In the manufacturing industry, technicians can use it to speed up the repair process by looking up the manual for a piece of machinery by taking a picture, even if the UPC/serial number is not visible.
Business Card Reader
Business Card Reader is a component available in the PowerApps studio that lets you scan business cards. You can use this control to extract contact information from pictures of business cards or your mobile phones camera.
Form Processing
Form Processing identifies the structure of your documents based on examples you provide to extract text from any matching form. Examples might include tax forms or invoices. Form processing allows you to create and consume models that use machine learning technology to identify and extract key-value pairs and table data from form documents. Train your model and define what information needs to be retrieved from your form documents. You only need five form documents to get started. You can get results quickly, accurately and tailored to your specific content without the need for a lot of manual intervention or extensive data science expertise.
With the above announcements, AI Builder makes available Cognitive and AI offerings from Microsoft to everyone by lowering the bar to entry and learning by providing a low code experience to create and consume AI in Business apps and Processes. There by providing a true no-cliffs opportunity with a grow up story to Azure ML and Cognitive services.
We’re delighted to continue to add value to the Power Platform and realize the vision of enabling the next wave of Citizen and Pro-developers to make intelligent business applications.
Customer Testimonial
G&J Pepsi, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, has more than 1,600 employees focused on manufacturing, distributing, and marketing the full line of Pepsi-Cola products. The G&J Pepsi IT team used AI Builder and PowerApps to create the next generation of their Store Audit App, enabling better mobility and efficiency for field personnel whose job it is to assess product needs on the shelves in stores.
“With AI Builder, we were able to easily build an AI model to help automatically identify and track our products using the object detection model,” said Eric McKinney, Enterprise Business Systems Manager at G&J Pepsi. “For our field worker, it’s now as simple as taking a photo and let AI builder do the rest.”
