Have you ever had something you were trying to accomplish & it felt like the devil himself was trying to stop you? I hope you haven't experienced this. Unfortunately that is what it felt like for me getting my client's art commission completed. Thank goodness they were understanding & patient while my life fell apart there for a minute. Thus far I've been pretty resilient & I do my best to overcome the obstacles put in front of me. Sometimes creating art feels like a mini version of creating & problem solving we have to do on a bigger scale in our lives. Sometimes everything flows & you get the colors & textures just right...then other times you misjudge things & you have to fix your mistakes so that you can still have a beautiful result in the end. This project from three years came up in my memories today. It was a beautiful project for a local author. It's entire theme was based off one of his books. I just have to say that I have some of the most amazing client's. In the past two years my poor client's have been tested by lot's of uncertainty about projects & schedules that I have had little control over. Back orders on furniture have been unbelievable, with dates moving constantly. It was because of this that I've been very cautious about who I sell products to. Not everyone understands what our industry is experiencing. My client's have been extremely patient with the process & delays on their projects. They probably understand that I want to see their rooms done as much as they do. This project is no exception. When I delivered my client her custom pillow today, for the guest room I designed...I was definitely disappointed that her final furniture peices have had the delivery moved forward another month. Still it's coming together & she was really excited to see the way the custom pillow complements the mural I painted months ago & pulls in the custom draperies we added to the room. I will get a full room view eventually...but this will do for now. A few weeks ago was my client's big drapery installation. We had three very important windows that were finally ready for their finishing touches. It's been a little tricky to say the least, to handle the slower than normal lead times. It's more common now to have to re-select fabrics & drapery hardware because of ridiculous back orders & discontinued products. One of the rod's for one of our windows was suddenly was 16 weeks on backorder right after I ordered it & it had showed it was in stock. Thankfully my rep helped me figure out a solution & it saved the day. You roll with the punches in this business & while it's not new...it's more dramatic than it once was. This particular window I have been telling my client's that it needed draperies for a while. In the TV room adjacent from the kitchen, which bridges the spaces together...I had specified & installed some of the most beautiful draperies I've ever had made. They did so much for the space & I wanted that same feeling in the living room. It also was the perfect way to tie the colors of our rug & the furniture together. The draperies are made for this rooms specific color scheme but I did use matching drapery hardware because it's an open floor plan & you can see the other draperies from the living room. It had taken them a while to decide to go for it...right after they were put up my client's stunned & delighted at how much the draperies changed the feeling of the room. I kind of described it as a hug for the room because it really felt like it. A few years ago I helped my dear client's the Coopers, by designing a custom buffet/hutch for the area between the kitchen & the living room. Originally there was a very uninteresting, less than functional desk here. It matched the kitchen cabinets, so it wasn't a terrible eyesore...but it lacked real style & the functional storage space. We were going for a furniture look...not an extention of the kitchen cabinets look...I absolutely adore the way it turned out. I love the gray & the organic tile. One of my favorite ways to use color is balancing warm & cool tones together...in this case warm & cool neutrals. When you use color this way you get the best properties of both...& it's timeless. It's a little crazy that I had never posted it, other than I my stories during the installation though. I need to catch up somewhat on my projects, as Instagram really is the most updated portfolio of my design work. A few weeks ago during a drapery installation in their home, my client helped me style this up a little so I could take pictures, because I realized that I've never shown it off. If you look at the second picture you'll see a sliver of the art collage wall I've been slowly working on for them. Last night I dropped my client's prickly pear drawing off to them. They have been super patient as I've been slowly creating art for the collage I specified in their home. They understand my schedule & my work load & are extremely supportive. When I originally came up the with idea because there was a massive wall & a short TV stand...my client insisted she wanted me to create the art. Each one I selected represents the States they have lived. I decided to add the prickly pear after I started the first four & quickly found out that they love this type of cactus. I think they were more excited about this peice than the others thus far. It really makes me feel good to work with people who appreciate my work & who tell me how happy they are to have April Elizabeth exclusives in their home. I had a realization the other day that I typically only post my design work when it's a finished project. This isn't necessarily intentional. It's usually because when I'm in the process of creating a project, I'm pushing so hard to achieving the end result, that it's all I'm thinking about. Noting progress is part of the process, even though I'm always more focused on completion. I've honestly gone to posting more of the process in my stories, where I don't feel as concerned about how cluttered or disjointed it may appear. This drawing is for one of two art projects I'm bouncing between & creating for my client's. I'm using my artistic skills along with my Interior Designer eye, to create art to specifically work in each individual environment. Each project is a completely different style & type of art. I promised to post pictures of the finished cornices my installer Hank & I built together. I'm pretty pleased with them. I also found the perfect clock to pull all the elements of the room together. I love my client's & always feel super blessed to work with them. That is why when one of them asked me to help her with her Christmas decorating I was more than thrilled to help. We started at the beginning of November to make sure we had enough time & so the decor in the stores wasn't too picked over. It was a collaborative effort & we did it together so that she could replicate it in the future. I'm always excited to create new decor & I love getting to know my client's better through their preferences & the thing's they love to put in their home. The main color scheme was created to go with her homes existing color scheme of teal, aqua & chartreuse. Champagne was her metallic sparkle of choice & we set it all off with touches of red. I've been extremely busy since the first of the year, so I guess that's my excuse for not posting pictures of the beautiful floor lamp made by @empelcollections in Holland. A few nights ago I got a call from my clients contractor saying they were ready for the wall color to be decided. I'm actually quite excited about this kitchen remodel which I'm doing with my talented friend Dave. He's the best kitchen designer I know. He called me in because they were working around some existing material that made choosing the color & the direction a little tricky. On the left is one sliver of the view outside their kitchen to the back yard. It feels like a tree house when you are standing in it. They wanted to bring the outdoors in, and update it a bit.
