Tumblr media
“so, enlighten us, was there any tea from the summertime?”
stifling a groan, you rolled your eyes, waving your hand to swat away the dozens of eyes peering away at you, “for the record, i practiced celibacy this summer.”
“like i believe that!” came a jeer, “you can’t just say that and expect us all to believe it. and rex, i hope you don’t take offense to it, but your best friend is an absolute smokeshow. i would definitely–”
“enough,” a platinum blonde interjected, massaging his temple with his fingers, “jesse, i think we need to cut you off for the night.”
“i was just getting started!” jesse exclaimed, elbowing a figure beside him, “wolffe, come on, you agree with me, right?”
now it was wolffe’s turn to roll his eyes, smacking jesse on the back of the head, “rex said that was enough.”
the voices filling your ears were barely audible over the pounding music of the bass, as students gathered on the dance floor to sway to the music. most of them were extremely intoxicated, enjoying the final days of freedom before the start of the fall semester. every so often, colorful lights flashed, only amplifying the ambiance of the bar. of course ram’s was going to be packed tonight, as all of the newbies were eager to check out campus’ most famous spot.
most of your night had been spent with your best friend, rex, and his teammates from the rugby team. over the course of the summer, you had grown close with the guys, bringing them cold water bottles after long days of practice, or dropping a few of them off as a favor for rex. they were quite rambunctious at first, always so loud and chaotic, but as the days passed, you had grown quite fond of them. eventually, they had grown to adore you, often inviting you over for team dinners or early morning smoothie runs.
now, all of you were crammed into a booth at ram’s, savoring the last moments of summer before it all slipped away. although the boys were well past tipsy, you didn’t mind, collecting the empty cups and forming a small tower in the middle of the table. you enjoyed their presence, as you didn’t have many friends anyways.
since you spent most of the summer in the hospital, clacking away on a computer, you were eager for the fall semester to begin. the course load wasn’t too bad, with only fifteen credits, and another phase of clinical on the way. maybe this time around you could branch out and make some friends, whether it was at the bars or at the rugby games. besides, the boys would make great wingmen. well, maybe.
“she is right though,” rex cleared his throat, taking a sip from his cup, “there was not a single soul that came through our apartment this summer.”
“i was busy with my clinical at the hospital,” you chime in, your voice raising with every word so that the boys could hear, “after some days in the er, sex was the last thing on my mind. besides, the only people who stay are townies and athletes. both of those groups are a big no-no.”
“hey,” another voice cut in, “we’re not all that bad.”
“i know, comet,” you giggled, flashing a quaint smile, “most of the athletes here are just.. questionable.”
“especially the football guys,” rex’s lips curled with disdain, “they make all of us look bad.”
“i don’t know,” you shrugged, “you guys can be a handful. especially jesse over there.”
jesse arched a brow, a smug smirk beginning to form, “hey, i just was saying what everyone was thinking. we all think you’re hot.”
“oh?” your eyes widened, “is that so?”
shifting in the crammed booth, you face rex, poking him playfully as he buries his face in his hands, “that is not true. that is not true. that is not–”
“hey, he does not speak for all of us,” comet interrupted, the words cut short by a burp, “i think i’ve had enough for the night.”
“it’s only eleven thirty-six,” jesse protested, “the night is still young!”
“not when you have a lift in the morning,” wolffe grumbled, “a five-thirty lift, at that.”
“here we go,” comet exhaled, “mr. team captain has to ruin the fun.”
“do you want to run three miles after a lift?” wolffe folded his arms over his chest, “i sure as hell don’t.”
“and with the hangover i’m sure you’re going to have tomorrow,  you’d throw up,” rex pointed at jesse, amusement glimmering in his honey depths, “you’d be in the fetal position on the track, begging for mercy.”
“yeah, yeah, yeah,” jesse scoffed, pulling his phone out of his pocket, “okay, so who is giving me a ride home?”
“i guess we’ll have to call some ubers,” rex responded, his head finding its way to your shoulder, “unless, our personal uber is ready to leave.”
“we walked here, remember?” your lips curled into a grin as the boys scowl, “just think, you’re all getting a little workout in before your lift in the morning. it’s probably really nice out anyways, a lot cooler than this bar.”
“i do need to stretch my legs,” comet nodded before taking a final swig of his own beer, “all right, i’m ready to call it a night. i think i got my share of fun in.”
“are you ready, mr. captain?” jesse puckered his lips at wolffe, who only responded with a stony glare.
“what’s your first class tomorrow anyways?” rex murmured, breath hot against your ear, “isn’t it with that hot professor? the one every girl on campus absolutely raves about?”
“the one who has thirst edits all over tik tok?” comet obviously was close enough to overhear, “professor maul, right?”
“yes,” you answered curtly, “i’m taking some elective course, just for some fun. well, it also fulfills a requirement for my major. however, i’ve never actually met or seen the man. i mean, i’ve seen his pictures and stuff.”
“don’t tell us you’re going to develop a little crush and become just as obsessed as some of those other girls,” comet teased, “well, i have seen guys post about him too. everyone loves the guy.”
“who knows,” an airy laugh bubbled up in your throat, “i just might get a little crush. however, i think we have more important matters at hand. someone is getting a little sleepy.”
rex grunted in response, his head a little heavier than it was five minutes ago. of course the alcohol was catching up to him. he was at a steady pace with jesse before he tapered off, swearing up and down he didn’t want to be hungover in the morning. however, a small part of you knew that he was going to need some water and a tylenol before bed, just in case.
“how are you falling asleep right now?” jesse leaned over the table, practically shouting in rex’s face.
in the process, he knocked over the tower you started earlier in the evening, which created quite the alcoholic mess as melted ice and leftover drinks spill all over. wolffe let out a string of curses under his breath, which you were sure were mainly directed at jesse. comet placed a hand over his mouth, masking his laughter as wolffe proceeded to yank jesse out of the booth by the collar of his shirt.
“he’s going home with me,” wolffe stated, jaw clenched with fury, “late or not, he’s running the three miles.”
“hey!” jesse squirmed, yet wolffe didn’t budge, “i won’t be late! i promise!”
“i don’t give a fuck,” wolffe’s tone was icy, yet he softened as he turned to you, “have a good night, guys. also, have a good first day of classes.”
“thank you, wolffe,” you beamed, “and good luck with jesse.”
“you’re coming with us, right?” rex inquired, collecting the cups to be thrown away.
“of course,” you nodded, “i think i’m going to pee first, though.”
“make it quick,” rex teased, shooting you a wink, “we have quite the trek home.”
“i will, i will,” you affirm, sliding out of the booth, “i’ll be back by the time those cups are in the trash.”
“sounds like a deal to me,” rex’s grin turned into a frown as he surveyed the mess jesse made of the table, “actually, take your time. i don’t want to leave this mess for the bartenders.”
“yeah, good luck with that.”
giving rex one last pat on the shoulder, you made your way towards the restrooms, which were located in the back of the bar. since it was still in prime hours of business, the air was thick, almost sticky as you maneuver through the swarm. individuals of all walks of life were in attendance tonight – twi’leks, nautolans, zygerrians, you name it. part of you cursed yourself for expecting it to be a slower night, as there was quite the line forming for both doors at the restrooms.
your eyes scoured the lines, wondering if the wait would even be worth it. after all, your apartment was only about a mile away. you could probably hold it, but as always, the alcohol was stating otherwise. sucking in a deep breath, you flinch as your phone buzzes in your back pocket.
rex. he was probably wondering what was taking so long. you had promised him it was only going to be a couple minutes. by the time you even made it to the lines, about five minutes had passed.
fishing your phone out of your pocket, you made the decision to abandon the idea of waiting. you could probably make it to your apartment without any mishaps. and if you really needed to go, there were a couple fast food joints you could step into.
i’m waitinggggggg >:(
stifling a giggle, your fingers glided across the screen.
the lines were horrendous. i’ll just stick it out till we get back to the apartment. see you in a second.
still focused on your phone, you swiveled on your heel, heading in the direction of the entrance.
see you soonnnnn!! can’t wait to zzzzzzzz
shaking your head, a smile lingered on your lips. yet, that smile quickly dissolved as you collide into a stranger’s back, your phone clattering as it hit the floor.
“oh shit!” you widened your eyes, bending over to pick up your phone, “i am so sor–”
the words cease as you come face-to-face with the most gorgeous man you had ever seen.
he was squatting, eye level with you as your fingers brushed one another.
“no need to apologize, accidents happen. i was going to pick up your phone for you but it appears you beat me to it.”
you were not sure if the alcohol was lingering, or if the room had skyrocketed several degrees as heat overcame you, flourishing from your cheeks to your toes as you stood, the stranger mimicking your actions.
“i – oh my god – i am sorry. you don’t have to apologize at all. i was the one who wasn’t paying attention like a–”
“like i said,” his voice was low, almost like a growl, yet it sounded silky as it filled your ears, “accidents happen.”
the stranger facing you was a descendant of the zabrak species, his skin a rich crimson hue. however, he was tattooed, the lines thick and intricate, weaving geometric patterns all over. it suited him, the black and crimson contrasting nicely with the ivory horns protruding from his skull. there were several, gleaming under the low light. a silver piercing glittered as well, a helix on his upper left ear. he was definitely younger, as there were no prominent wrinkles scoured on his facial features. with his close proximity, you could also pick out the indent of a scar as it began on the right corner of his upper lip, descending down.
yet, the most striking feature were his eyes.
they were absolutely radiant, like embers smoldering over a flame. the irises were an amber color, flowing into crimson rings around his pupils.
“tongue tied?” the stranger let out a chuckle, leaning forward, slightly right, so that his mouth was merely centimeters from your ear, “you have nothing to apologize for, love. if anything, i consider this a blessing because you are absolutely beautiful. perhaps we’ll run into one another again sometime. here’s your phone.”
“t-thank you,” you stammer as he placed the phone in your hands, your knees almost buckling, “maybe i will see you again.”
his lips curled into an eager grin, the heat in your cheeks nearly intensifying as you noticed dimples forming, “i’ll look forward to it.”
“see you!” you managed to blurt out before nearly scurrying away, heart beating in your chest.
luckily, you found solace as you spotted rex waiting near the entrance, the rest of the guys nowhere to be found. concern painted his features as his eyes fell on you, lips pursing, brows knit together.
“jesus christ, you look like you just ran into one of your exes. everything okay?”
“i’m fine,” you shake your head, “i’m just ready to go home.”
“me too,” rex wrapped an arm around your shoulder, “come on, let’s go home.”
as the two of you exited ram’s, a breeze rolled through the streets, cooling your heated skin. even though rex was far more intoxicated than you were, you found yourself clutching to his frame, almost leaning on him for support.
whoever that stranger was, he seemed awfully familiar. you felt like you knew him from somewhere, like you had seen his face before. yet, you couldn’t quite place your finger on where exactly you remembered him from. it’s not like he had a forgettable face, he was devastatingly handsome. no one could forget a face like that.
perhaps you’d see him again, and maybe you wouldn’t.
time would only tell.
******
placing your hand on the wood, your heart nearly skipped a beat as the clamor and chatter of voices filled the air.
it was only 9:46 a.m., how was the lecture hall already packed?
hesitantly, you push it open, fighting the urge to turn around and leave as you notice the amount of crowded seats. fourteen minutes until the class began and there were barely any seats left. the spots you preferred, up higher, towards the back, were already well beyond capacity.
carefully, you make your way down the steps, settling for an open row in the middle of the hall. there were only a few students, so you didn’t have to fight your way through the aisle. eventually, you found a spot between a togruta and a mirialan, settling between the two of them.
absentmindedly, you pluck your laptop out of your bag, along with your planner and favorite. however, the realization washes over you as you continue to prep.
was this seat reserved for someone?
“hey,” you cleared your throat, “was this seat filled already?”
“oh no!” the togruta chirped, flashing you a warm smile, “that’s just my girlfriend. we can’t sit by one another in class or else we wouldn’t be able to pay attention.”
“don’t listen to a thing she says,” the mirialan’s voice was soft yet playful as she typed away on her own laptop, “she loves to spread lies about me.”
“that is not true,” the togruta huffed, focusing her attention on you, “she may be the most gorgeous woman in the galaxy but she’s a real pain in my ass. i’m ahsoka tano, by the way.”
“and i’m barriss offee,” the mirialan broke away from her screen, gaze meeting yours, “you made a good choice by sitting here. ahsoka is super intelligent when it comes to these sorts of courses so she’ll probably carry us through this semester. i fare better in the political science courses.”
“please,” ahsoka tutted, pulling out her phone, “she loves to gush about me. it’s honestly embarrassing sometimes. especially right now because you don’t even know us.”
“i think you have a pretty amazing partner if she’s willing to gush about you to complete strangers.”
“see?” barriss leaned over you, sticking out her tongue, “who’s the better girlfriend? i am.”
“be careful sweetheart,” ahsoka reciprocated the gesture, her voice laced with a tease, “we both know how competitive i can be.”
for some reason, you felt drawn to the two as they bantered and flirted, as if you were meant to find them. maybe the three of you could develop a friendship over the course of the semester. besides, you were craving that sort of connection, and these two seemed like the perfect pair to be friends with, as their energy was warm and friendly, almost like old friends from the past.
it also went without a doubt they were a gorgeous pair.
ahsoka tano was one of the togruta species, her complexion an orange hue, head tails striped navy and white, with two montrals poking out. her face was wise, as if she had matured at a young age. the white markings on her forehead were breathtaking: two diamonds complementing a symmetrical shape, the markings trailing down onto her cheeks. ahsoka’s eyes were a bright, crystalline blue, shining with warmth and kindness.
her outfit was simple: a navy tank top paired with a pair of black joggers, the university’s logo stitched on one of the pockets. as her knee bounced, you noticed a pair of white nike air maxes, completing the hues of her clothes.
barriss was almost the opposite of ahsoka, clad in a floral sundress, the pattern bursting with greens, yellows, and purples. it suited her light green complexion, along with her rich blue eyes. her eyes were darker than ahsoka’s, glimmering with intrigue as she surveyed the lecture hall. black diamonds stretched across the bridge of her nose, her lips coated with a black lipstick. tights covered her legs, a chunky pair of doc martens on her feet. a hijab wrapped around her head, the material an inky black silk. barriss carried an aura of elegance and poise, a contrast to ahsoka’s goofy and rambunctious nature.
although the pair were polar opposites, you could tell it was meant to be – almost like the sun and the moon.
you wondered how they met, and how they managed to become such a strongly bonded pair. that aspect was also easy to pick out, as ahsoka looked at barriss with nothing but pure, radiant, love.
“it’s 9:58 and the professor still hasn’t shown up,” barriss muttered, glaring over to her lover, “if he doesn’t show up in fifteen minutes, i hope you know i am leaving.”
“and i hope you know i am going to be right behind you,” ahsoka sighed, leaning back in her seat, “i hope this class isn’t a snoozefest, because my dad was the one who recommended it.”
“who’s your dad?” you inquired, “is he faculty or something?”
“uhhh yes and no?” ahsoka responded, picking at a loose string on her joggers, “he’s the head coach of the men’s rugby team.”
“coach buir?” you gasped, “i know who that is!”
“how do you know him?” ahsoka’s brow furrowed, “not many people around here even know we have a men’s rugby team.”
“well,” you began, sitting up in your seat, “i know him through the rugby guys. rex is my rooma–”
the murmur of your fellow classmates fell into an almost dead silence as the professor entered the room, an aura of concentration settling over the lecture hall in a thick haze. you clicked on the mousepad of your laptop, ensuring that you were prepared for any note taking. absentmindedly, you typed in the date, as well as a title for the note section: first day of class.
“good morning class,” the professor rumbled, his voice clear as it rang through the space, “i am aware that this is a three hundred level course and we have a limited number of weeks to get through course material, but today there will be no lesson.”
“so much for opening my laptop,” you grumbled, earning a hushed giggle from ahsoka and barriss.
“today will be an overview of the syllabus, as well as some icebreakers,” the professor continued, a unanimous groan erupting from the class. the professor chuckled, “i know, we all hate standing up and stating five fun facts about ourselves. but, it helps me remember names. after all, there are about one hundred and fifty of you.”
your eyes drifted up from your laptop screen as you shut it, widening with shock as they fell on him.
your professor was the zabrak you ran into at the bar the night before.
and that zabrak, was none other than professor maul.

ardor | darth maul
word count: 3.135k
warnings: age gap, cursing, professor/student relationship, sexual tension, mentions of sex, sexual innuendos
a/n: hello everyone! so this is the surprise i listed on my upcoming works list! i was just so excited to post this that i have been working on it constantly! this is a modern au involving professor!maul, set in coruscant. the reader is 21 in this fic. let me know if you want this to become a series or be added to the tag list! i hope you all enjoy :))
summary: as a junior enrolled at university of coruscant, you are striving to complete a minor in psychology. however, one class in particular intrigues you. will you be able to focus or let lust consume you?
Tumblr media
pushing open the massive wooden doors, you grimaced at the vast amount of students already crammed in the seats. glancing at your phone, the time read 9:46 a.m. letting out a quiet sigh, you were fourteen minutes early and the lecture hall was almost to capacity. all of the seats on the edges were filled, and you grumbled under your breath. those damn freshman. always so early.
scanning the space, your eyes fell on an empty seat, near the front of the hall. strolling down the steps, you mumbled apologies as you shimmied into the empty seat, almost collapsing into the chair. rummaging in your bag, you fish out your laptop, powering it on.
once it’s whirred to life, you pull up your notes application, ensuring that you’re ready to take notes for the first lecture. the moment you were all set up, you ran a hand through your hair, noticing the togruta sitting to the right, as well as a mirialan to your left.
“w-was this seat reserved for someone?” you stammered, a blush spreading through your cheeks.
the togruta shook her head, “not at all! you see, that mirialan, she’s my best friend. we can’t sit by one another in class because we don’t pay attention. the seat is empty, we just wanted some space between each other.”
“oh okay,” you mumbled, relief rippling through you, “i wasn’t aware that everyone was going to be so early.”
“that’s freshman for ya,” the mirialan nudged you, giggling, “we just got here and the hall was practically full!”
“don’t scare our new friend off!” the togruta huffed, her bright blue eyes shining with amusement, “i’m ahsoka tano.”
ahsoka tano was a gorgeous creature, a descendant of the togruta species. her complexion was an orange hue, her head tails striped navy and white, with two montrals poking out. her face was wise, as if she had matured at a young age. the white markings on her forehead were breathtaking, trailing down onto her cheeks. ahsoka’s eyes were a bright, crystalline blue, shining with warmth and kindness.
you enjoyed that aspect about her already, as she was so friendly. she wore a plain navy blue tank top, which complemented her head tails, while donning a pair of grey joggers. her knee bounced, a fresh white pair of nike air maxes on her feet. you noticed the university logo stitched below a pocket, the curiosity within you rising by the second.
“do you play any sports?” you arched a brow, “i couldn’t help but notice the logo on your joggers.”
ahsoka’s eyes drifted towards the pocket, “oh yeah! i’m on the saber team.”
“you wield lightsabers?” a gasped tumbled from your lips, “that’s awesome!”
a blush spread through ahsoka’s cheeks, dusting them a light pink, “thank you, it took many years of practice and dedication. i was offered a full ride to come here, so i transferred here from theed university second semester my freshman year.”
“rumor has it that ahsoka’s undefeated,” the mirialan chirped, “good morning, i’m barriss offee.”
barriss was almost the opposite of ashoka, clad in a floral sundress, the pattern burstings with greens, yellows, and purples. it suited her light green complexion, along with her rich blue eyes. her eyes were darker than ahsoka’s, glimmering with intrigue as she gazed you. black diamonds stretched across the bridge of her nose, her lips coated with a black lipstick. tights covered her legs, a chunky pair of doc martens on her feet. a hijab wrapped around her head, the material an inky black silk. barriss was gorgeous, her aura radiating  nothing but intelligence and compassion.
“well i’m (y/n) (y/l/n),” you couldn’t help but smile, “i’m a junior.”
you couldn’t help but feel an attraction towards the two girls, as if you were meant to find to them, to be their friends. already, the three of you were off to a great start. you were looking forward to spending the rest of class with them for the semester, even if you just met.
“what’s your major?” ahsoka inquired, “i’m a sophomore, looking to pursue an education major. i’m not quite sure what aspect of education, but i love kids.”
“that’s really cool!” you gushed, “how about you, barriss?”
“i’m a sophomore as well,” her tone was smooth, “i am looking to major somewhere in political science.”
“i’m going to major in health sciences,” you remarked, “but i plan on minoring in psych. i needed this class for a prerequisite for next semester. which is weird considering the course title, but i feel like it’ll be an interesting class.”
“i agree-” ahsoka began, but was cut off the sound of the door slamming.
the murmur of your fellow classmates fell as the professor entered the room, an aura of concentration settling over the lecture hall in a thick haze. you clicked on the mousepad of your laptop, ensuring that you were prepared for any note taking. absentmindedly, you typed in the date, as well as a title for the note section: first day of class.
“today will be an overview of the syllabus, as well as some icebreakers,” the professor continued, a unanimous groan erupting from the class. the professor chuckled, “i know, we all hate standing up and stating five fun facts about ourselves. but, it helps me remember names. after all, there are about one hundred and fifty of you.”
your eyes drifted up from your laptop screen as you shut it, widening with shock as they fell on him.
your professor was a descent of the zabraki species, his ivory horns protruding from his skull. his face was absolutely gorgeous, jet black tattoos weaving an intricate pattern over his crimson skin. his jawline was strong, his incisors flashing as a wide smile enveloped his features. he was similar to barriss, an aura of wisdom and intelligence shrouding over him. if you had to guess, he was somewhat young, in his mid thirties or so. nonetheless, he had you in a daze, eagerly eating up every word that fell from his mouth.
the zabrak was clad in a black turtleneck, paired with a tweed jacket. the jacket was a beige hue, dark, chocolate brown slacks as his choice of pants. a thin silver chain hung around his neck, lying on his chest as he spoke. in the light, you caught a glimpse of a silver stud, pierced on the upper cartilage of his ear.
“gods, he’s hot,” you muttered, almost speechless.
“you can’t say that about our professor,” ahsoka teased under her breath, “he’s probably older than we think.”
“but he’s so attractive,” you breathed.
“we need to pay attention,” barriss hissed.
“shall i start with a brief introduction of myself, or should i begin with some review of the syllabus?” your professor placed his hands on hips, awaiting the class’ response.
“icebreakers!”
“i hate syllabus days!”
“the more time we take away from class, the better!”
the zabrak placed his hands out, chuckling, “all right, all right. the class has spoken. well, to start, i am professor maul. you can refer to me as professor or maul. my home resides in the psychology department, and i do find myself dabbling in philosophy or theology from time to time. i have two brothers. savage, the eldest is a geology professor here at university of coruscant, while feral, the youngest is a pastry chef deep in the city. perhaps if you guys are good, i can bring in his pastries sometime. if you have any questions for me, speak now or forever hold your peace.”
ahsoka’s hand shot up instantly, and professor maul nodded towards her, “yes, the togruta in the front.”
“how old are you sir?” her voice surged with confidence.
professor maul’s eyes narrowed playfully, “is that any question to ask a professor? since you were so bold, i will answer. i am thirty-one, nearing thirty-two by the second.”
“you’re old!” a voice called out.
“perhaps,” another chuckled tumbled from the professor’s lips, “i won’t hesitate to kick your ass in saber duel, though.”
“you were a saber wielder?” a classmate to below you, a twi’lek, blurted out.
“i was,” he responded curtly, “although i teach here, i am not an alumni. i attended mustafar central on a lightsaber scholarship many years ago. however, i didn’t go pro, i took the graduate school path. enough about me, let’s me hear about you guys. i would like your name, your intended major or career path, along with a brief fun fact about yourself. don’t think about it too hard, we don’t have too much time.”
with every word professor maul spoke, you found yourself hanging onto every single word. there was something about him, the way he spoke so eloquently, or the way his amber eyes glowed with authority, that sent butterflies flurrying in your stomach. he stood proud, his arms folded across his chest as your classmates introduced themselves. you swallowed thickly as you realized you were staring a little too long, a blush spreading through your cheeks as his eyes fell on you.
“it appears as if it’s your turn to introduce yourself,” his voice was so smooth, like honey, “how about you tell the class a little bit about yourself?”
you rose to your feet, anxiety swelling within you. clearing your throat, you began your spiel, “u-um, hello everyone. i am (y/n) (y/l/n). my major is health sciences, and i am unsure of the career path i want to take after i graduate. i guess a fun fact about myself is that i will be wrapping up my psychology major by the end of this year.”
intrigue flashed in the zabrak’s eyes momentarily, “ah, well, it is a pleasure to meet you, (y/n). never hesitate to reach out to me this year if you have any questions. who’s next?”
ahsoka stood from her chair beginning to speak. however, you couldn’t but notice his eyes on you, his lips pursed, a wistful daze painted across his face. you swallowed thickly, biting your lip, desperate to avoid his gaze. your cheeks burned, hot to the touch. gods, it was only the first day and you were already crushing your professor. a professor who was a decade older than you, nonetheless.
the class was an hour and twenty minutes long, the time eleven o’clock by the time everyone introduced each other. once the last person finished, professor maul strolled up to the rows of seating, a thick stack of papers in his grasp, “please, pass this around, and ensure that everyone gets a copy. this packet is your life for the next fifteen weeks! do not lose it!”
as the packets were passed around, the sound of paper rustling echoed through the lecture hall. drawing in a sigh, you mumbled a thank you to barriss as she handed you the syllabus. once it was in your hands, you scanned over the text, glancing over it hastily.
psych 315: monsters in modern society. the title of the course jumped out at you, a feeling of dread washing over you, threatening to steer your attention away from the syllabus.
how were you supposed to pay attention to lectures in class when you could barely keep your eyes off the professor?
****
“how was your first day of classes?” a familiar voice called into the den of your apartment.
“rex!” you gushed, sprinting into the den.
the blonde couldn’t help but grin as you wrapped your arms around him, “good evening to you too.”
“classes were boring,” you groaned, burying your head into his chest, “they’re not the same without my best friend.”
“my classes were just about the same,” rex chuckled softly, “what’d you make me for dinner?”
“there’s some spaghetti in the fridge,” you responded, still latched onto the blonde, “the garlic bread is in the oven, keeping warm.”
“perfect,” he placed a tender kiss on your forehead, “practice was horrible.”
you detached yourself from rex, arching a brow, “yeah?”
“i’ll tell you about it later,” he exhaled, “i need to cool off for a bit, shower, and eat.”
“if you say so,” you shrugged, “hey, i’m going to go to the gym for a while. i should be back by the time you’re working on homework.”
rex rolled his eyes, “if film counts as homework, sure.”
“just text me if you need anything,” you slung your gym bag over your shoulder.
“will do!” rex shouted as you opened the door, closing it.
rex was your best friend, a kind and pure soul. the two of you met your freshman year, during the first week orientation for all incoming newbies. since you were far from home, you were anxious, unsure if you were going to meet any new friends or establish connections. one night, while you ate alone in the dining hall, a platinum blonde approached you, asking if you had any company. from there, the rest was history.
the two of you were almost inseparable. since you had known rex for a couple years, it only made sense that the two of you shared an apartment your junior year. besides, your schedules didn’t clash too much, as rex was on an athletic scholarship with the university’s rugby team. meanwhile, you were involved with a few clubs here and there, preparing for an internship with the hospital on campus.
although you were in the pursuit of a health sciences major, you were unsure of which area you wanted to concentrate on. there were a variety options: dietitians, nutrition, nursing, radiology, athletic training, physical therapy, and so many more. however, you were set on graduating with a minor in psychology. which, you were on the right track. after your junior year, you would have that minor.
the internship with the hospital was to dip your feet into uncharted waters, where you would experience a little bit of everything. you would be a receptionist for a variety of departments, switching offices every month. the internship began within the week, and the excitement within you was growing by the day.
pushing open the doors to the recreational center, you chirped a greeting to the student employee at the desk, requesting a bottle of water. strolling towards the elevator, you pushed the button, aching to relieve the pent up stress.
it wasn’t like your first day of classes were horrible, you just knew you had a tumultuous year ahead of you. with eighteen credit hours, along with the internship, you were unsure how you were going to tackle it all. yet, you knew that you could manage it. you just had to trust yourself and go with the flow. everything happens for a reason was the mantra for the year.
as the doors slid open, you strolled towards the weight room, where all of the racks and machinery were located. since it was about nine o’clock, the rec center was shying closer to close, students making their way towards the elevator. you noticed ahsoka in the fieldhouse, practicing combat techniques with her team, the hum of lightsabers echoing off the walls.
however, as your hands rested on the handle of the door, your breath hitched in your throat. through the glass, you noticed a familiar face at the punching bags.
there stood professor maul, clobbering the bag with jabs and punches, his breathing ragged, coming out in light pants. curses rolled off his tongue, in a language you couldn’t quite decipher.
carefully, you slipped into the weight room, careful to avoid making any sort of interaction with the zabrak. after all, this was a facility meant for the students, faculty, and employees. it was for anyone’s use, but the fact that he was there, in the same space with you, had your heart thudding against your rib-cage, your mind buzzing.
sweat trickled down his skull, his back glittering in the light. with every single jab, his muscles rippled. scars plastered his shoulders and back, some deep, some faint. hesitantly, you clambered onto an elliptical, every fiber in your being screaming at you to look away. to stop staring. to stop admiring.
the zabrak paused, scooping his water bottle off the floor. as he chugged the water, you nearly choked as water dripped from his lips onto his neck, down his tattooed chest. not only was his face tattooed, but the ink was all over his beautiful body, weaving geometric patterns.
your cheeks reddened as you noticed the pair of black joggers hanging loosely on his hips, exposing his v-line. filthy, nasty, thoughts filled your mind, and you desperately shook them away. he was your professor. you weren’t supposed to see him like this.
“fancy seeing you here,” his voice was low, raspy, “isn’t it almost closing time?”
“i still have about an hour,” you mumbled, your cheeks burning, “i wasn’t aware that professors actually used this facility.”
“you’ve got some fire in you,” he chuckled, slipping on a plain black v-neck, “your name is (y/n), isn’t it? you’re in my level three hundred class.”
the sound of your name rolling off his tongue sent a shiver down your spine, “u-uh, yes. and you’re professor-”
“you can call me maul,” a smirk crept onto his lips, “no need for the formalities here.”
“okay,” you mumbled, flustered by his banter, “i didn’t know you were a boxer.”
his eyes flickered over you, maul licking his lips as you sat on the machine, your thighs full, “i am. it keeps me in shape. as much as i would love to stay and chat, my brother is finished with his work for the night. i have to go meet up with him.”
“you two carpool?” you felt a giggle bubble up.
“unfortunately,” maul scoffed, rolling his eyes, “i have been having some car issues lately. hopefully i’ll be able to drive myself soon.”
“well goodnight,” you beamed, “i hope that your night isn’t too horrid.”
“if i have to hear one more word about geology, i just might throw myself out the car,” maul chuckled, his eyes shining, “goodnight (y/n).”
“goodnight maul,” your voice was low, the words almost a whisper.
the zabrak strolled towards the door, pulling it open. however, he paused, turning to face you, amusement glittering in his amber depths, a playful grin stretched across his features.
“by the way (y/n), you could be a little more subtle about your wandering eyes.”

aftershock | maul
word count: 2.121k
warnings: angst, cursing, professor/student relationship, age gap
a/n: i know it’s been about a little over a month or so since i last updated this series, but here we are with a new chapter! the first seven can be found here, whether you want to start from the beginning, or need a refresher! thank you all for the endless love & support on this series. it truly means so much <3 enjoy :))
you can find the ardor playlist here!
summary: after a singular phone call, it takes every fiber of your being to maintain your composure. however, you’re not the one who explodes.
Tumblr media
“what was that all about?”
his eyes narrowed, brow furrowing, “you eavesdropped, didn’t you?”
clenching your jaw, you shake your head, desperate to fight the tears springing into your vision, “you told me that you had zero interest in the position in the first place. all of the sudden you’re all buddy-buddy with fucking palpatine. what do you really want, maul? are you going to accept the position if you get it?”
“(y/n),” for a second, your fury dissolved as you noticed the defeat inflected in his voice, “please, we just got into it last night. i really don’t want to go through that again.”
his hand rested on his temple, fingers rubbing soothing circles into his crimson flesh as he stood in the doorway of the refresher, leaning against the frame. letting out a shaky breath, you fought to maintain your composure, tears streaming down your cheeks.
“i-i’m sorry. i’m sorry, maul.”
“sorry?” the zabrak’s lips curled into a sneer, growl bubbling up in his throat, “sorry for what? are you apologizing for being so fucking selfish about this? i would have at least expected a ‘congratulations babe!’ or some bullshit like that before you hounded me with all of these questions. and before you pester me about the subject any further, yes, i am going to take the position if it’s offered to me.”
“b-but you love being a professor.. you love teaching,” you trailed off, the words broken with sobs, “i thought you despised palpatine.”
“i’m also almost thirty-two years old,” he countered, venom seeping into his words, “i have to make a decision about my future before it’s too late. i was led to believe that this would be an exciting new opportunity for me. not only would i be earning more, but i would be the one able to make change instead of the one yearning to make the change.”
“well congratulations,” you mumbled under your breath, “i hope you’re happy.”
“i am,” he nodded, his eyes smoldering embers, “i’m proud of myself for making it this far in the application process when dozens of other professors and other faculty applied.”
“i think i’m going to go for a bit,” swallowing thickly, you sucked in a breath, “i’ll just text you or call you later.”
“okay.”
“just okay?” pausing for a moment, you just stared at him, a fresh batch of tears blurring your vision.
“yes,” he growled, “just okay. go. leave, since you want to so badly.”
a sob bounced off the walls of the hallway as you scurried out of his apartment, strands of hair plastered to your heated cheeks. a part of you was hopeful, urging you to look back. to see if he was there, chasing after you, pleading for you to stay.
inhaling a shaky breath, your head tilted a few degrees, swiveling towards your shoulder.
in that moment, your heart nearly shattered, a gut-wrenching wail erupting from your lips.
the hall was nothing but a stretch of an endless array of doors, the sterile light flickering, the hum of the elevator whirring through the building.
the zabrak was nowhere in sight, leaving you in the hall, all alone, with nowhere else to go.
no one else to turn to but the empty space around you.
******
“so,” a togruta settled into a stool, folding her arms across the table, “was there a reason you called me?”
your gaze flickered towards the viewport, sheets of rain pounding against the pavement, citizens fighting their way through the monsoon, headlights and taillights of cars glowing in the night, “i wanted to apologize, ahsoka.”
“and you didn’t invite barriss?” her eyes widened, lips pursing, “or, was that on purpose?”
“i have an odd feeling about her,” you muttered, bringing a mug of hot chocolate to your lips, “i was at ma-- i happened to be at his place tonight and i eavesdropped on a conversation.”
“from the look of it, it wasn’t a good conversation,” a frown crept onto the togruta’s lips, “listen, (y/n), i was never that upset over your relationship with maul. i guess i was more frustrated with the lies. if you were honest with me from the beginning, i would have been a lot more supportive.”
“i guess i was nervous,” the words were barely audible as you swirled a spoon around in the mug, avoiding eye contact, “i didn’t want anyone to know because of the risks. if he got fired, or terminated, or whatever it is that would happen, i wouldn’t be able to forgive myself.”
“hey,” her hands crept across the table, resting on top of yours, “i’m your friend, (y/n). you can trust me. what’s most important is that he makes you happy. i know how cliche and stupid it sounds, but it’s true. and i mean it.”
“i didn’t know ahsoka tano was such a sap.”
“only for my friends,” your heart swelled, brimmed with joy as you picked out the sincerity inflected in her voice, a small smile stretched across her lips, “by the way, how is he? we just haven’t spoken to one another in a few days so i wanna know how things are going. is he a dreamboat? i wanna know everything!”
“we’re fighting right now.”
“oh shit,” ahsoka breathed, “i’m so sorry i didn’t mean--”
“no,” you shook your head, “i’m not sure if i can tell you what it was about, though.”
“oh come on. you have no idea how much gossip i hear from the saber team, along with my dad and his rugby boys. i don’t kiss and tell.”
fidgeting in your seat, you drew in a deep breath, “well, it’s not any shock that president palpatine is retiring after this year, as it’s a well-known matter on campus. but, he’s in the process of selecting a replacement. it just so happens that my boyfriend is one of those candidates.”
“does he really want that kind of position though?” ahsoka queried, sipping on her own coffee, “i mean, i wouldn’t want to be the president of a university or college. it seems like a pretty stress-inducing job.”
“that’s what confuses me,” fingers drummed along the table, your head propped against your hand, “he said that he was never really interested in pursuing the application. palpatine just pretty much applied for him. he got a phone call a couple hours ago stating that he was one of three finalists.”
“oh shit,” ahsoka breathed, “what are you going to do if he does get it?”
“we might have to break up.”
“do you really think so?” her voice faltered, “i mean, yeah, he would be president but you are a junior. you only have one more year. you’d only have to keep things under wrap for one more year, essentially. after you graduate, you wouldn’t have to hide it anymore.”
“do you know how strange it would be that the president of the university is suddenly in relationship with a student? especially one that recently graduated?”
“i guess you’re right,” the togruta leaned back, slinging an arm over the back of the stool, “so tell me, why didn’t you invite barriss?”
“so now you’re asking me the hard questions?” you teased.
“she’s my friend,” she shrugged, “did something else happen that i wasn’t aware of?”
letting out a sigh, you bit your lip, “well, when maul was on the phone, palpatine mentioned that an anonymous source filed a report that maul and i were involved in a relationship beyond the classroom. yeah, there were instances in the classroom where maul and i flirted, but it was nothing too drastic. not anything substantial enough to bring it to palpatine’s attention. there are only three people who know, including you, ahsoka. there’s this inkling in my head that perhaps barriss was the one who filed the report.”
the togruta’s eyes narrowed with intrigue, “and you don’t think rex had anything to do with it?”
“he wouldn’t have. i know he wouldn’t have done that. not to me, not to anyone, for that matter. he isn’t the type to spread rumors.”
“rex is a good guy,” ahsoka mused, “as much as i would hate to admit it, i think you’re right.”
“you think barriss snitched?”
ahsoka stuck out a hand, “to her, it wasn’t ‘snitching.’ in her mind, it was the right thing to do. she’s all about valor and righteousness, in every aspect of her life. the moment her suspicions were confirmed, she would have addressed it to the proper authority.”
“but why did she wait until now? why not inform palpatine months ago in october, when things first started?”
“maybe she knows about his application,” the togruta fished her phone from her hoodie, thumbs gliding across the screen, “she works in the same office as palpatine, as an intern.”
“so that means she would have received word about the applicants before anyone else.”
“exactly,” ashoka nodded, “she would have known before any other department because she fucking works there. what a conniving little bitch.”
“ahsoka!”
“sorry,” she grumbled, focus still fixated on the screen, “that shit just pisses me off. your relationship with maul wasn’t bothering me. i’m not sure why she snuck behind our backs like that. if i was aware of her plan, i would have told you right away.”
“wait, was it that easy to tell that maul and i were dating?”
“i knew the day after that party,” her eyes gleamed with amusement, “trust me, it wasn’t difficult to see that the two of you were hooking up.”
“well great,” you rolled your eyes, sinking into your own sweatshirt, “i bet the entire psych class knew.”
“i’m sure they did,” she shot you a wink, “do you want me to talk to barriss? she doesn’t know that i’m here with you. although, i’m not sure how much i could pry from her before she catches on or shuts me down.”
“don’t worry about it for now,” you waved a hand, “i’m just relieved that you don’t hate me.”
“hate you? i could never hate you for something as silly as dating your professor.”
“you were certainly irritated that day you confronted me about it,” you remarked, the buzz of your phone against your thigh piquing your curiosity.
“i was just caught up in the heat of the moment.”
plucking your phone from your pocket, your throat tightened as the notification illuminated your screen.
i’m so sorry for lashing out. can we talk? please?
“is loverboy on his knees begging for forgiveness?” ahsoka leaned over the table, her forehead nearly brushing yours, “oh shit. how predictable. are you going to go over there or--”
“i’m not sure.”
“maybe you should,” the togruta nudged you gently, “maybe you guys will kiss and make up. and then maybe some more--”
“ahsoka.”
“sorry, sorry,” she snorted playfully, “i’m just trying to help lighten your mood.”
“the rain outside is no help.”
“i bet,” her voice softened, “do you wanna come back with me to my place? you’re more than welcome to stay the night. barriss went home for the weekend.”
“i’d like that. if i’m not wrong, rex is with the guys tonight. i would much rather not come to an apartment full of guys.”
“guys are gross anyways,” the togruta’s nose wrinkled, “well, do you want to head out? you can borrow my comfiest sweats, take as long as you want in the shower, and even eat all of my snacks. oh! we can find a movie on netflix or hulu!”
“i would love that,” your lips curved into a broad grin, “i’m so happy that you forgave me, ahsoka.”
the togruta’s smile mirrored your own, “of course i’d forgive you. i missed you, (y/n).”
“and i missed you.”
“let’s go out into this monsoon,” she chuckled, slipping out from the stool.
rising to your feet, you followed her lead, chirping a goodbye to the barista at the counter. throwing your hood over your head, your heart lurched as the smell wafted into your nostrils.
the hoodie clinging to your frame was far too big, draping to about mid-thigh, the color an inky black, university logo stitched in royal blue and pearly white lettering, spanning across your chest.
the scent of his cologne lingered, faint traces of cinnamon and other heady spices.
maker, did your heart ache.
and gods, did you want to be wrapped up in his embrace, snuggled against his chest, watching the rain fall, pattering against the viewport, cozy and content from the thick waves of body heat.
but he made a choice.
and that choice carried consequences.
his harsh words were like an earthquake, shaking you to your core.
bringing nothing but aftershocks along with it.

I absolutely love the professor maul au! I might have stayed up til 2am so I could finish it! Is there going to be more added to it at some point?!
oh gosh yes!
i had originally planned for there to be about ten or twelve chapters, but i think i will be able to wrap up the story nicely around ten. perhaps there will be an epilogue (👀 with a proposal) essentially, i plan on finishing the series by the end of august.
life is currently throwing a bunch of bumps in the road at me, but i’m doing my best to navigate!
thank you so much for reading ardor! 🥺🤍 it’s probably one of my favorite things i’ve ever written!
