In New York....

All of a sudden it was Saturday and I got to meet up with another friend who I’d met on the more recent tour I’d done through Ukraine, Moldova, Romania. Jim, born and bred New Jersey, bought a similar pass as I did for local attractions so that he could join me on my exploration of the city. We headed out walking to get to the Pier area, and catch the boat around to the one world /freedom tower, and the 9/11 memorial and museum. Enroute he took me to an amazing cookie store (its never too early for cookies!) The boat trip was great, and then we headed up to the 102nd floor and the view across the city. It was an amazing day and the sky was so clear ensuring incredible views. Busy, but not so busy that you had to wait for ever, but it had been an hour wait till our allotted time to go up. During that time we had visited the nearby water memorials. The twin reflecting pools have the largest man made waterfalls in Northern America are almost an acre each in size, and sit within the footprints of where the twin towers once stood. The names of every person who died in the attacks are inscribed into the bronze panels edging the pools. The nearby liberty park, an elevated park overlooking the northern edge of the pools area contains the remains of the ‘sphere’, that had been the only piece of World trade centre artwork to have survived when the towers collapsed.

The museum was an incredibly moving and emotional experience. There are a lot of things I remember of that time, some of the stories told within the museum, were ones I had never heard. The whole area is incredilby well put together. I was emotionally spent by the time I had finished. Thankfully they have tissues located in the sections, as you get to a point where what you are seeing and hearing intermingles with the memories you have, and an emotional release is triggered. I spent almost three hours wandering and experiencing the museum. It's an individual experience and something I think all visitors should make a must do in NYC. A lot of the areas you are not allowed take photos, and for that I am actually grateful as it prevents the ‘selfie’ addicts from diminishing the power of the displays.

Sunday saw us meet up again to jump on another hop on off bus (part of the package) and head down to Battery Park to catch the Statue Ferry across to Liberty and Ellis Island. Lady liberty is even more imposing when you are standing on her island! The immigration museum was a total immersion in the process and the experiences faced by the millions of immigrants who had taken up th offer of a new life in the USA. Interesting and thought provoking at the same time! I often wonder - current refuges have done the same thing, giving up their lives in the hope of something better, but because they are not invited to the countries the go to (unlike the multiple countries who pushed for diversity in immigration back in the day) today they are shunned and unwelcome. Something I learned on my last tour (Poland Lithuania,Latvia Estonia) stays with me. Estonia has a 'welcoming program' where new immigrants are required to be enrolled in free courses to help them assimilate into their new country, including learning the language. I'm not sure if this is done to this extent in other countries, or how well this system works, but maybe it's something we could look at implementing.

Monday was labor day here, so a public holiday, and it was raining on and off all morning. We headed off to the Chelsea markets - incredible space of people, food, culture, and some artsy stores. Had a delicious clam chowder (tasted just like yours dad!) A fabulous lobster roll , was surprised that they weren't ott with the mayo on that one! Then we headed to the Whitney to take in the modern art scene, and their 2019 Biannual exhibition. Lucky Jim works for s company that sponsors the arts, it meant he got me in for free. After a few hours pondering the modern art scene we headed off on the high line back towards 32nd street (in other words walked the length of the high line...😁). The rain was almost gone, and there were apparently alot less people on it than usual, so it was a great experience!

Tuesday saw me head out to Central park to explore the huge city icon. Strawberry fields was a lovely tribute to John Lennon, Belvedere castle was alot smaller than I thought. The Alice in wonderland statue and surrounds were magical, I located poor old Hans Christian Anderson statue, the boathouse restaurant that you see in so many movies (again alot smaller than you think in real life!) I then headed to the Lincoln centre to see if I could get good, cheap seats for a Broadway show that night. The TKTS office there is not as busy as the Times square one. Got some fab tickets to see 'Waitress' so met up with Jim after he finished work for an early dinner then the show. Amazing show, funny, emotional, with some magic singing! Also saw some you tube guy called Kory (his head in front of me the entire show - lol). I had to ask one of the kids next to me who he was (All these kids /teens kept coming up to him for photos)😆😂.

I have loved my time in this city. Spending time alone, and time with friends gas made it all the more wonderful. All too soon my time here was over, and I was off on a train to see my friend in Washington DC. I had a lovely New Yorker and her daughter help me locate the correct part of Penn station (I hadn't asked for help, but she was adamant she wasn't gonna leave me till I was somewhere where there were train people) who says New Yorkers arent helpful??
