Music is all made up. Even the artist. They’ve been telling you for years.

Music is manufactured. A song takes, at minimum, one producer, an instrument (be it voice, trumpet, synthesizer, choose your poison), lyrics and/or notes, and concludingly, a beginning, middle, and end. This can be all one person, but the music that makes it past mainstream filters to the average You, the audience, usually is a culmination several artists into one piece.

Questlove made the joke on twitter a month ago about Travis Scott’s “SICKO MODE” having 30 writers and five producers and couldn’t wait to see “the chaos ensue onstage” if it wins song of the year.* The number one song right now in both the U.S. and the U.K. is Ariana Grande’s “7 rings,” which has 10 writers and four producers. The entire industry of Kpop brands itself off as being a barbie-doll playhouse of mainstream, beautiful, dancing, singing idols.

This doesn’t make either forementioned tracks less of a song, neither does it make Travis nor Ariana nor any Kpop idol any less of an artist. What does happen, however, is a perpetuance ignorant bliss: the celebration of a curated face that represents a team of masterful mixers, lyrical holders, perfect samples and many in between. Gorillaz is the antithesis of this.

The Gorillaz broke through the mainstream membrane with their 2005 hit “Feel Good Inc.” but they had been operating as a “virtual band” since 1997. The idea of a virtual band was both demystifying and aweing at once. I remember watching the FGI music video as it played on repeat on Germany’s MTV (ironically*), thinking how cool the animated Russel was whilst being entranced by 2-D’s vocals.

To realize an embarrassing amount of years later that not only were the “members” fictional but the whole concept of Gorillaz was the brainchild of two flatmates was shocking. According to a 2005 sit-down interview with Neil Gaiman, comic artist Jamie Hewlett and Blur’s vocalist Damon Albarn found themselves forming the idea of an cartoon band while watching MTV one day to create a response to what provided “nothing of substance”: an ode to Celebrity Deathmatch and cartoon exploitation.

Gorillaz was the birth of mixing megalomania. With Albarn’s lilted vocals and Hewlett’s landscape, they brought together the talents of D12 sans Eminem and Dan the Automator to open the doorway to rap group De La Soul with Danger Mouse and, evidently, “Feel Good Inc.”

“Feel Good Inc.”, along with being a snub to modern media, was the gateway to genre-trespassing. Amongst windmill-powered islands and brainwashed cartoons, rap met alternative. It opened a gateway to the curated weird: MF Doom meets Brian Burton meets…Dennis Hopper! Meets Roots Manuva meets Oasis meets the maniacal minds of Albarn and Hewlett.

Run-DMC had lit the way with covering Aerosmith in 1986, Jay-Z and Linkin Park’s joint venture in Collision Course in 2004 proved that rap and rock could coexist, but Gorillaz showed they could converse. Gorillaz was a knock on the door while Demon Days kicked it down.

Gorillaz blurring the lines set a path for the music industry. Lil Wayne’s lyrical manifesto to electric guitar improved on that formula. Today, we can barely tell what was implausible but a decade prior. Paul McCartney squeezed between Kanye and Rihanna? James Blake’s mania with Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock and Future? A Fleet Foxes sample in Danny Brown’s “Pac Blood?” It’s a drop in the pool that Gorillaz helped pioneer.

Beyond that, beyond the space Albarn and Hewlett helped create for rap and pop and artists and producers to experiment wantonly, Gorillaz never hid the fact that they were completely made up. Every bit and piece, from the lyrics to the producing, was a culmination of well-execution. There’s nothing to feel ashamed of, because music has no rules. Gorillaz ridiculed and accepted that.

The making of the band is a long forgotten concept, but it’s everywhere today. Beefs are flared and snuffed on ghostwriters and legitimacy. Well, “ghostwriters” are everywhere. Uncredited writers, producers and vocalists who don’t get credited; these are the bones of an industry that are stepped over on their way to the stage.

It’s okay that “SICKO MODE” has 30 or more songwriters and five producers. It’s a monster of complemented samples and humongous prowess. Music takes a village. But give credit where credit’s due.

*I’m very aware of how music sampling works. So does Questlove. You’re definitely missing the point. Carry on.

**Hewlett and Albarn came up with the idea of Gorillaz as a “fuck you” to MTV, but “Feel Good Inc.” ended up winning two awards for Breakthrough VIdeo and Best Visual Effects in 2005.

According to Bild, several other high profile presenters in Mexico came out in support of Ms Mora with a special Twitter hashtag in solidarity.
