I honestly feel like the reason bbcan is now known for gameplay and bbus is now known for big alliances is because of Neda and Derrick respectively.
BBCAN2 and BBCan16 both aired in 2014 and have influenced the past six years of this show.
BB16 was right after the atrocity of racism scandals that was bb15. It looks like BB decided to hire a bunch of non-controversial recruits who didn’t know how to play the game, and superfans who weren’t that super dedicated to the show (Nicole called herself a superfan but only watched like 4 seasons and didn’t watch feeds). And then we got Derrick who figured this out and realized he could just make a super big alliance and get rid of all these unsuspecting people one by one. The Battle of the Block twist only helped his game because it encouraged huge alliances. And since he had such an easy time with all these factors helping him everyone now looks at him like a genius and wants to mimic his gameplay. Almost every season after 16 consisted of huge alliances, or people trying to get in on the huge alliances because they watched Derrick’s season and thought that’s how you play the game. Even the twists do nothing to encourage house flips. We get really useless ones like the safety suite or random punishment costumes that doesn’t really effect the game in the long run. All Stars is just exposing this trend because it brought back old players who do like the strategy and big move aspect of BB and are calling it out now that it is nowhere to be seen.
BBcan2 was still in it’s early seasons, and if you look at the way players came onto that show, they didn’t really know what strategies to use (Ika and Rachelle both putting up members of their alliance, Jon learning everything he knows from Neda in that season while working alonside her since she was a superfan). It wasn’t until after the show was finished and people saw how many power shifts that happened and how Neda navigated everything that BBCan started really using strategy, house flips and big moves as apart of their promotion. Remember in bbcan3 when another superfan said he wanted to the next Neda and everyone was freaked out about Naeha becoming the new Neda because they were both brown? That was Neda’s impact. Arisa Cox always hypes up the audience everytime there is gonna be a house flip during evictions. Julie says the same thing every eviction regardless of if there may be a house flip or not. All the twists on this show are meant to encourage house flips/power shifts (like Britnee and Sarah being saved from the big alliance in season 3)
It just goes to show that casting is so important in a show like this. And US has really dropped the ball in the past six years. I’m not saying that recruits never do well on this show but superfans are needed to help keep this show alive in terms of the trends for strategy and gameplay.
arisa was on this podcast and said that a minimum of half the bbcan9 cast is gonna be bipoc!! this is huge and i’m so excited that she’s pushing for this (video taken from twitter)
