I think this would happen when Capt. Leona docks the boat and Ruggie decides to go fishing. He catches a cute little mermaid on his hook and can’t help but think: Should he turn you in for some cash? Or keep you on the boat like an exotic pet.

Leona won’t care what he does as long as Ruggie still does his tasks like he’s asked. So, I hope you like sleeping in a tank on a rocking boat for a while. He didn’t have the heart to dump you on someone who only wants to dissect you. Besides, you’re pretty charming for someone who lives in the sea while he sails through it. Why hasn’t he seen someone as gorgeous as you before?! You need to surface more often… Well, too late for that now because he’s filling a tank with water to keep you in. It’s small and cramped and your tail fin hangs out of it, but Ruggie makes it livable until he steals gets you a new tank.

Ruggie takes good care of you.

He pours water on your scales, brings you all sorts of shiny things he found on land, he feeds you fresh fish and seaweed. You feel like a pet to him sometimes… But when he starts decorating you in rings, pins, bracelets and necklaces… That’s when it feels different. Now you feel like a living piece of treasure he owns. Which is a major upgrade from a pet!

He won’t ever be romantic towards you since the truth is: He’s holding you captive on a boat with Leona’s permission. And he doesn’t think you’re happy even if you say you are. One day he’ll ask you in the dead of night as he slowly pours water over your glittering scales. You can hardly see his face in the dim room, only lit up by an oil lamp.

“Do you want to go back to the ocean? Or do you want to stay here on Savanaclaw?”

The room is silent, except for the water dripping into your little tank as you admire the many more shiny trinkets he has given you this week.

He’s allowing you the choice to leave, or stay. He won’t be upset with you. Ruggie just wants you to be happy.
