retrieved from: https://www.artsy.net/article/artbookdap-matthew-brandt-lakes-and-reservoirs
Matthew Brandt takes pictures of lakes and other bodies of water and makes standard C-prints of them. Then, he submerges the print in a bath of water thats been collected from the lake where the picture was taken. Overtime, the print starts to degrade and the colors separate, creating chromatic swirls and abstractions that blend the original image with the materials of the print itself.
I think that this is a really interesting way to work because I love the exchange that is happening between the subject and the material. The water depicted in the image is also leaving its physical mark on the image. I also like how the colors and shapes that the water creates are completely unexpected and accidental. When the water is allowed to interact with the print, the artist is surrendering their control of the finished product that will be created, which gives the piece greater meaning.

In his 2020 book, 'The Future of the Museum: 28 Dialogues,' the cultural strategist András Szántó spoke to museum directors around the world and discovered that institutions were “turning more democratic, community-focused, equity minded, culturally inclusive, and experiential, among other pivots.” For his latest book, 'Imagining the Future Museum: 21 Dialogues with Architects,' Szántó spoke with David Chipperfield, Frida Escobedo and David Adjaye, among others, to find out “how the momentous changes of our era” are shaping museum architecture. In this excerpt from the book, he outlines three key takeaways. Bold, black lines seem to drip into entwined figures whose limbs transcend figure-ground, slowly trailing off until they rest in a space that is neither design nor portrait, but harmonious in every way. @art_books_ beautiful facsimile edition of ‘The Art of Aubrey Beardsley’ stands as a lasting epitaph to the remarkable English artist whose illustrations helped define the fin-de-siecle aesthetic. Aubrey Beardsley (1872–98) epitomized the Art Nouveau design sensibility that rocked Victorian England in the nineteenth century. His spooky, seductive images were both controversial and reflective of the time. During his short lifetime—Beardsley erupted onto the scene as an untrained prodigy at the age of nineteen, and was prolific until his death from Tuberculosis at the age of twenty-five—the artist aligned himself with living writers of the time, most notoriously Oscar Wilde, whose play Salome he illustrated in fluid, abstracted natural forms. This pairing solidified Beardsley's place as a leader of the Art Nouveau movement. Beardsley died on March 16, 1898, in Menton, France. The first edition of ‘The Art of Aubrey Beardsley’ was published ten years later, in 1918, prefaced by two introductory texts by Beardsley's friend and collaborator, Arthur Symons. Now, one hundred years later, this affordable, 4.25 x 6.5-inch clothbound facsimile re-presents the original, complete with beautiful gilt edges and a fine gold ribbon—a pocket-sized memento. #aubreybeardsley #artnouveau #victorian #salome #facsimile #artbook #artbookdap

When Frida Kahlo died in 1954, her husband Diego Rivera asked the poet Carlos Pellicer to turn her family home, the fabled Casa Azul, into a museum. Pellicer selected some paintings, drawings, photographs, books and ceramics, maintaining the space just as Kahlo and Rivera had arranged it to live and work in. The rest of the objects, clothing, documents, drawings and letters, as well as over 6,000 photographs collected by Kahlo over the course of her life, were put away in bathrooms that had been converted into storerooms. This incredible trove remained hidden for more than half a century, until, just a few years ago, these storerooms and wardrobes were opened up. Kahlo's photograph collection was a major revelation among these finds, a testimony to the tastes and interests of the famous couple, not only through the images themselves but also through the telling annotations inscribed upon them. The amazing 524-page book 'Frida Kahlo: Her Photos' allows us to speculate about Kahlo's and Rivera's likes and dislikes, and to document their family origins; it supplies a thrilling and hugely significant addition to our knowledge of Kahlo's life and work. More than 400 duotone images include everything from Kahlo's sometimes harrowing self-portraits to the many gorgeous and revealing portraits taken of her by artists, friends, lovers and family, to photographs of the important people in her life—including her father, mother, Diego Rivera, Marcel Duchamp, Edward Weston, Georgia O'Keeffe, André Breton, Isamu Noguchi, Dolores del Rio, Tina Modotti, Alfred Stieglitz, Gisele Freund and Leon Trotsky, to name a fraction. @museofridakahlo @editorial_rm #fridakahlo #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #casaazul #diegorivera #mexicanmodernism #artbook #artbookdap
