Nan Goldin. She is our hero. What more can we say? Her work, her life, her advocacy, her utter bravery. Images and spreads are from 'Nan Goldin: This Will Not End Well,' published by @steidlverlag and going fast. This is the first book to present a comprehensive overview of Nan Goldin’s work as a filmmaker. Accompanying the retrospective show and tour of the same name, organized by @modernamuseet Stockholm, the book draws from the nearly dozen slideshows and films Goldin has made from thousands of photographs, film sequences, audio tapes and music tracks. The stories told range from the trauma of her family history to the portrayal of her bohemian friends to a journey into the darkness of addiction. By focusing exclusively on slideshows and video installations, 'This Will Not End Well' aims to fully embrace Goldin’s vision of how her work should be experienced. The book retains the presentation of the slide shows by showing all images in the same format on a black background and sequenced as they are in the sources. The 20 texts, the majority of which are newly commissioned by Goldin, complement and deepen the intention of her work. Edited by Teresa Hahr, Fredrik Liew. Text by Vince Aletti, Thomas Beard, Guido Costa, Marvin Heiferman, Roni Horn, Patrick Radden Keefe, Caitlín R. Kiernan, Fredrik Liew, Gabor Maté, Eileen Myles, Cookie Mueller, Alfred Pacquement, Darryl Pinckney, Rene Ricard, Lucy Sante, Sarah Schulman, Anne Swärd, Hala Wardé, David Wojnarowicz. Interview by Andrea Lissoni. Drawings by Hala Wardé. Traveling to @stedelijkmuseum @neue_nationalgalerie @pirelli_hangarbicocca @nangoldinstudio #nangoldin #nangoldinthiswillnotendwell #thiswillnotendwell #womenshistorymonth #womenshistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CpP62bUu3Ds/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

My other favorite films of 2022, Park Chan-wook’s beautiful romantic mystery Decision to Leave, Kogonada’s stunningly made After Yang w amazing performance by Colin Farrell, Terrence Davies’ underrated and unseen Benediction about Siegfried Sassoon, played by Jack Lowden as a profound British poet and WWI veteran who was hospitalized because of his anti war stance, and tragically had to hide his gay love life. The remarkably witty and funny Nicholas Stoller’s Bros, one of the most funny, smart, and well made gay romances produced by the great Judd Apatow, with wonderful Billy Eichner, Luke MacFarlane. Laura Poitras’ brilliant All the Beauty and the Bloodshed examines the life and career of photographer and activist, Nan Goldin and her efforts to hold Purdue Pharma accountable for the opioid epidemic. Panah Panahi’s touching, and hilarious Hit the Road, a comedy-drama about an Iranian family driving to the Turkish border to immigrate their young adult son out of the country. Max Walker-Silverman’s A Love Song about two older childhood friends who share a night in the Colorado mountains features beautiful performances by Dale Dickey and Wes Studi, a film about real people who have lived their lives without glamour, or luck and how they have continued in spite of life. Finally, S. S. Rajamouli’s entertaining and funny epic RRR. #bestfilmsof2022 #parkchanwook #decisiontoleave #kogonada #afteryang #colinfarrell #terrencedavies #benediction #sigfriedsassoon #jacklowden #bros #nicholasstoller #juddapatow #billyeichner #lukemacfarlane #laurapoitras #allthebeautyandthebloodshed #nangoldin #purduepharma #panahpanahi #hittheroad #maxwalkersilverman #alovesong #daledickey #wesstudi #rrr #rrrmovie #ssramarajamouli https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpsb9McuXZp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Truth. This is a book for every art lover's bookshelf. @vulture reviewer @savile_ros writes: "The first exhibition to collect the bulk of the iconic photographer’s film work, 'This Will Not End Well' is a collaboration with Hala Warde and Mark Davis of @hwarchitecture The firm designed a “village of slideshows” in @modernamuseet with each structure designed to best encompass each of Nan Goldin’s multimedia works. Even within the confines of the catalogue, the artist’s gift at narration and keen eye for unexpected moments is apparent. Readers will likely recognize P.AI.N., Goldin’s harrowing protest against the opioid industry, and her breakthrough, 'The Ballad of Sexual Dependency,' a meditation on intimacy and loss, but less-heralded works, such as 'Scopophilia' and 'Fire Leap,' mesmerize the reader as well. If that doesn’t sell it, Goldin also commissioned a Dream Team of commentators on her artistic practice, including @schulmanny @luxante @eileen.myles @pinckney.darryl and @praddenkeefe Read more about the book — published by @steidlverlag — via linkinbio Book edited by Teresa Hahr, Fredrik Liew. HAPPY BIRTHDAY NAN GOLDIN!
We sourced “Ivy in the Boston Garden, Back”, 1973, by contemporary photographer Nan Goldin (b. 1953) to accompany an elegant and iconic photo by William Klein “Painting + Coffee: Simone D’Allencourt, Fabiani”, 1960, a lavish rich and saturated setting of a model seen from the front; the combination of the two images gave added meaning to both photographs.
“While still in college at the School of the Museum School of Fine Arts, Nan Goldin spent two years recording performers at the Other Side, a Boston drag bar that hosted beauty pageants on Monday nights. This black-and-white study of Ivy, Goldin’s friend from the bar, walking alone through the Boston Common is one of the artist’s earliest photographs. The portrait evokes the glamorous world of fashion photography and hints at its loneliness.”
Nan Goldin is a photographer and activist. Her work often explores LGBT subcultures, moments of intimacy, the HIV/AIDS crisis, and the opioid epidemic. Her most notable work is “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency”, a slide show, which documents the post-Stonewall gay subculture and Goldin's family and friends. She lives and works in New York City, Berlin and Paris; her work is a long list of museums around the world including The Tate, Getty, Met, Moma, MFA Boston, Tate
Goldin cites three primary influences on her work: Dian Arbus, Michelangelo Antonioni and Larry Clark.
