Is a glitch still a glitch if you do it on purpose?
According to the interactive article, a glitch is defined by a specific user-technology relationship where the technology “fails” in some way, and the user loses control of said technology, the computer or program is not doing what the user directed it to do. Making glitch into a purposeful art form is a sort of “paradox”, because the user is making a conscious decision to fail, or at least fail in the context of controlling the technology (this is all information paraphrased from the feminist glitch art article). Glitch art has a very recognizable aesthetic: saturated rainbow stripes and static white noise that runs through and distort images, super pixelated video that purposely doesn’t match up to audio, or shimmery twitching spots in video games. I researched a couple of the different processes used in glitch art making, and there’s a few that are widely used tactics. There’s a process called datamoshing, which is intentional distortion of media through loss of data during file compression, or z-fighting, which involves weaving together multiple competing visual layers to form one layer, resulting in a slight flickering texture, this tactic often appears in video games. All the processes used to create glitch art seem very intentional and not at all accidental, so to answer the question “is a glitch still a glitch if you do it on purpose?” depends on how you choose to define the word. If the inherently accidental quality is what makes a glitch truly a glitch, then I guess a purposeful act of technology failure wouldn’t count. However, if you define a glitch as being separate from the intent and just about the failure of the technology to work in the way it was intended, then a glitch would still be a glitch when done on purpose. However, how can you say that technology is “failing” if it’s doing exactly what you told it to do? Perhaps, glitch art can no longer be considered a true “glitch” since it’s a very calculated and intentional process, however, it still exists with the context of a “technological failure” attached to it, which gives it meaning. Glitch is a really useful visual tool for making art about identities that need to be kept secret, in reference to the interactive article, as well as other glitch artists that make work about hidden identities. In conclusion, I think that glitch that using glitch as an art making tool is a very conscious and purposeful act, and calling it “glitch”, implying that it’s accidental, is actually cheapening it in a way.
I did watch the “Is Gender Real” video, but to be honest I don’t really understand how that ties in with the Trainer question. I know the video is done in a classic video game visual style, but I don’t really see how it’s related to glitch. Also side note, I had a lot of fun making the selfie gifs this week. The gif making portion of the trainers usually really stresses me out but this one was actually enjoyable and I messed around with it for probably longer than I should have.

TRAINER QUEST #6
Is a glitch still a glitch if you do it on purpose?
The word “glitch” as a noun is defined as: “a sudden, usually temporary malfunction or irregularity of equipment." as a verb it is defined as: “suffering a sudden malfunction or irregularity.” If a glitch is created purposefully, it is no longer a “malfunction,” or failure to function normally or satisfactorily. Therefore, I believe that by definition, a glitch is NOT a glitch if you do it on purpose. If you create a glitch on purpose the technology you used is simply doing what you intended for it to do - it is no longer a “malfunction”.  I also believe that glitches and non-binary people, as described in the “What is Woman?” video, are similar in the fact that they are both “irregular,” they both don’t conform to societies expectations of gender/technology.
An excerpt from “Glitch Perfect” that really struck me was, “their bodies performed without conventional representation and consequently reinvented themselves by embracing a glitch, or a flaw, as a productive and acceptable framework of identity construction.” This stood out to me because it confirmed that just because you fail to function normally, or rather function differently from what is most common, doesn’t mean you are wrong.

>>>>>>>FIRST OFF THIS WEBSITE HAD ME SCREAMING IN MY ROOM FOR LIKE AN HOUR (the 5th gif is a heart made out of my face and hair)
Yes, it is still a glitch. In the Wolfgang interactive article/game, it describes glitch art as a “way to exploit wrongess as a creative device.” I like the idea that things that are supposed to be a broken code lead to better understandings of the world, for a few reasons. The first one being, if something is broken you are forced to work through it to accomplish your goal. You’re forced to make critical decisions that can make or break the final product. It’s like a virtual representation of the process of critical thinking.
Secondly, the idea of making something to look like it’s not working is such an interesting idea to me. Humans are a species of pattern. This form of art disrupts that and that is so appealing to me. It’s breaking the “norm” in a variety of ways. From content to coding to aesthetics.
Speaking of content, I appreciate learning about glitch art through the lense of girlhood because it pairs with each other so nicely. It’s the stepping stone, the thing that breaks the norms, the vital part of itself.
I also liked the video cause I’m totally against the “don’t get boys pink things because that’s the girl color” ideology. Plus, I don’t like the color pink, does that mean I’m not a girl? No. It’s so freaking silly to me that colors dedicate someone's identity.

“Literally, a glitch is a ‘spike or change in voltage in an electrical current,’ an occurrence with extreme, unpredictable, and potentially fatal results.”

I thought the reading was an interesting break from a normal article. For the most part however I usually found myself clicking on the “turn” button on the bottom. I did veer from the path a few time though. I believe that glitch art is a great way to disrupt social and cultural norms on the internet. It allows the artist to completely change the meaning of something and take control of an image that was previously out of their control. Glitch art seems especially prevalent in modern feminist art. A person is able to take an image objectifying women/fitting stereotypes and completely alter it as to “problematize” it. The writing pointed out how by trying to sell women something, even if it is trying to sell something empowering an advertisement is usually adding to the stereotype of thin and silent women. I had never thought about how almost every add does this. The video was enjoyable as I have watched Wisecrack before. I have also read Judith butler before. I thought it was a nice video but it didn’t bring anything up that I haven’t heard/thought about before.
