LIS 5937-723 Web Design for Libraries
Welcome to the course!
I was super excited about this course because I’ve played around with web design a lot as a teenager, but haven’t done so in a very long time. I’m hoping to update my skills, since the handmade (artisanal?) HTML code from fifteen years ago just ain’t going to cut it anymore. I’m in the final semester of the Master’s in Library Science (MLIS) program at the University of South Florida, so I’ve been working a lot with webdesign lately a I finish up my final ePortfolio. I’m also taking Web Archiving and Digital Storytelling this semester, so everything is overlapping nicely.

Brackets
Tumblr media
The HTML Essentials tutorial introduced me to the program Brackets, which I’m now a huge fan of. It’s been a long time since I’ve done HTML, and I used to just use notepad - and that was great. But I found I’ve started to get a hang of the automatically generated tabs, and the flash preview is really nice. No more painstaking combing though code...it’ll just highlight it red for you. Oh and it’s open source & free, so win-win there too. I’m looking forward to learning more about the different plugins and other features. I downloaded the outliner plugin that the tutorial noted. I don’t feel knowledgeable enough to download other plugins or delve into some advanced features, but I am looking forward to getting there. Between FileZilla and Brackets, I’m pretty excited about building my toolbox of high quality opensource tools.

This is a website I made for my friend’s band, Ouch! Me Arse back in 2004. Its still here on the internet! The site popups are so frequent that it’s almost unnavigable, but I’m actually really proud of this thing. I built it from scratch with HTML code and made most of the images. My friend gave me a bunch of pictures and doodles he did for their album covers and I just went with it.
