Walpurgis Night!
In Estonia, Volbriöö is celebrated throughout the night of 30 April and into the early hours of 1 May, where 1 May is a public holiday called "Spring Day" (Kevadpüha). Volbriöö is an important and widespread celebration of the arrival of spring in the country. Influenced by German culture, the night originally stood for the gathering and meeting of witches. Modern people still dress up as witches to wander the streets in a carnival-like mood. The current festival is, in most countries that celebrate it, named after the English missionary Saint Walpurga (ca. 710–777/9). As Walpurga was canonized on 1 May (ca. 870), she became associated with May Day, especially in the Finnish and Swedish calendars. The eve of May Day, traditionally celebrated with dancing, came to be known as Walpurgisnacht ("Walpurga's night"). The 17th century German tradition of a meeting of sorcerers and witches on May Day is influenced by the descriptions of Witches' Sabbaths in 15th and 16th century literature.

Vladimir Kryloff - Color Study 266
Oil on canvas, 90 x 70cm
I was interested in this painting because it’s very colourful and abstract - there is no composition structure to the painting. The colours in this painting range from red to purple, to represent the different colours of flowers. The way the paint was applied to mimic the shape of a flower petal. The saturated colours act as shadows - blending into the background. While the brighter colours act as highlights, bringing dimensions to the painting. The subject of the painting seems to be the whole painting itself, as there isn’t any particular object or thing that stand out. His paintings are mainly focused on the performance of colour in an abstract expressionism style. The artist impressions of his world through solid brushstrokes and their movement on the canvas surface.

Jaanika Talts - When we dance
Acrylic on canvas with satin varnish, 80 x 120cm
What interested me about this painting is how the colours help create a dynamic feel to the painting. Captivating people’s attention with a contrasting colour palette - with dark and bright colours. Darker colours are applied mostly to the outer edge, while brighter saturated colours are gathered in the middle. This creates a vignette, drawing the eye to the centre of the painting. The colours seem to be an exaggerated representation of the landscape, as the colours aren’t similar to the usual colours of nature. The subject of the painting seems to be the water and the sky since blue is the brightest and the most saturated - making them stand out. In her paintings she incorporates her own emotions of the landscape, to create abstract and surrealism landscapes. She uses colours to communicate her emotions and thoughts through her paintings.
