Right but if movies and games are adding more diversity “just for marketing” that’s a good thing. Sure, we’re all disappointed with how late stage capitalism affected the entertainment industry, but having more people from *insert-x-minority*, even if their identity is not an aspect of the story, then that’s inherently good because it means that the current social climate makes bigotry less valuable than acceptance in they eyes of advertisers as well as simply showing more people more people. It’s one thing to criticize a story for being weak, trash, or poorly plotted, or to say that you think the acting was subpar, those are all valid criticisms but “there’s a bunch of minorities because they want to sell it to them/us” ignores that, at this point, all media is expected to inherently gear itself to be sold to a certain audience and its neat that the audience being us no longer dooms the media to obscurity
#social commentary#i suppose#I just really hate the “forced diversity” argument#And like#it’s good a greater variety of actors can now get major gigs#I want to see more people doing things not related to their sexuality or racial identity#of course half assed sh that depends on stereotypes should be called out#as should the ever common “45th first ever gay character” bs#but that’s seperate#it’s a quality issue that can be talked about#but the presence of a bunch of different people in media isn’t something that should be treated as bad
