Listen, I'm not gonna say you can't criticize current comics just because older comics were worse, but sometimes I do get whiplash when I see people talking about how they badly want popular, well-reviewed comics with diverse leads and creative teams to end because they're doing "irreparable damage" to preferred characterization and how they'd rather just not have books starring those characters than have books where those characters aren't written to a high enough standard.

As someone who has been in this fandom since the time when beloved characters had functionally been wiped from continuity because the people at the top were openly racist/misogynistic/etc, y'all don't seem to have any idea how much worse you could have it. Like, there are ways to express that you don't care for the current direction characterization is being taken without saying you think it would be better if those characters were written out of continuity.

#yes this is about batgirls but it's not *just* about batgirls #having experienced all of the options #I'd rather my characters be in books that aren't to my taste but are written by people who clearly love them than in books #where they're being written by people who clearly hate them #and I'd rather either of those than have them not be in anything #if the character you love isn't in anything then there's a good chance they will never be in anything again #and they won't have any chance to be written well again #and especially when we're talking about characters who aren't straight white men the vibe of saying you'd prefer no rep to flawed rep is uh #certainly something #not to mention that even the worst comic is someone's introduction to a character #you could be using this opportunity to be introducing new fans to your fave older comics and instead you're alienating them #as someone whose introduction to Jason was RHATO I stayed the hell away from the Jason Todd fandom for a long time #because of just this sort of thing #and now look at me
