Spotlight: African Folktales

For Black History Month I found another book of folktales (shocker) to share with you all! The fun and exciting part of this job is being able to look into things that one would not normally take the time to explore, and I have been given the opportunity to do nothing but explore and dig into the expansive collection we have in Special Collections (if you aren’t getting interested to come in and take a peek, you should be).

The book I am keen on sharing is The Ox of the Wonderful Horns: And Other African Folktales, a children’s book from our Historical Curriculum Collection, published in New York by Atheneum in 1971. The stories were retold and illustrated by Ashley Frederick Bryan (1923-2022), an American writer and illustrator for children’s books, of which most of his subjects focus on the African-American experience. Bryan’s desire and challenge for the anthology was to “bring the stilted language of the linguists’ narration back to an oral tradition through rhythm and poetic verses.”

This anthology features five tales from Akan-Ashanti, Angolan, South African, and Kaffir myths with various illustrations accompanying us through each story. The illustrations switch between half-page black and white and full-page color that are meant to evoke African wood block motifs that suggest the ochres and reds of African clay dyes and African textile designs; very eye-catching and absorbing!

Brennan: Heat pours over Imri and burns him terribly as he stands at the front of the ship, pushing forward with the will of this eternal place, making a way through the heat for your vessel to--

Ashley: I go to help.

Brennan: As Imri is dying, you put a hand on him. What do you do? What do you say in this moment?

Luz: I'm so sorry. I don't know what to do.

Ashley: I-- I sort of take my form, and the only thing I know how to do is just hold Imri in this moment in the warmth of what feels like a hug.

Brennan: You hug Imri, and that is the only thing that saves him from destruction. You heal him. As the heat touches him, it bursts into fire. This mane of-- Imri was so beautiful, and this mane of hair stretches back, and the fire burns it until it blackens into two swirling spikes that stretch back from his head, wrapping around him like horns, as the heat touches you and you burn brighter and brighter, until you are pure light.

Ashley Harrington had it all- she was a cheerleader, one of the most popular girls in school. Not only due to being a cheerleader, but because of her brother. But she had a secret that neither her brother or best friend Chrissy knew- she was in love with Eddie Munson. One day during lunch she was watching Eddie as usual, when he hopped up on the table and started speaking to the whole cafeteria. She hated the way everyone, including her brother, called him a freak. Usually it was behind his back-but that day it looked like Jason Carver was going to insult him in front of the entire cafeteria.

Eddie didn't care what anyone thought of him--he'd heard it all at this point. Being a super senior, he was just trying to get out of here without too much hassle.

Today was just a typical day until he found himself being riled up. He hopped on the table, speaking to Hellfire [ and to the rest of the cafeteria].

He was just about to get down when he heard Jason's voice.

" You want something, freak ?"

There was that word again. Might as well play into it. He stuck his tongue out and made a demon sound. Hands up above his head to make devil horns.

He turned around moving to get down.
