[2024.08.05] AERA x Yuzuru Hanyu: 24.8.12-19 No. 37
Tumblr media
person in focus
"After all, it's frustrating when I can't perform well."
A session with photographer Mika Ninagawa for the first time in a year. In a long interview exclusive to this magazine, he talks about the ideals he pursues.
Writer: Takaomi Matsubara
Professional skater Yuzuru Hanyu
Born December 7, 1994 in Sendai. 2009 Won the Junior Grand Prix Final at age 14. 2010 Became the youngest Japanese male to win the World Junior Championships. 2011 While practicing at a rink in Sendai, the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred, and he had to live in an evacuation shelter. The rink where he was training was temporarily closed. 2012 First participated in the World Championships, coming in third. 2013 Graduated from Tohoku High School. Enrolled in a correspondence course at the Faculty of Human Sciences at Waseda University, studying human informatics and cognitive sciences. Won his first Grand Prix Final. Won four consecutive titles thereafter. 2014 First Asian gold medal in men's figure skating at the Sochi Olympics. First World Championship win. 2017 Second World Championship win. 2018 Second gold medal in men's figure skating at the Pyeongchang Olympics. 2020 Won his first Four Continents Championship, becoming the first man to win all major international junior and senior competitions. 2022 Participated in the Beijing Olympics. In July, announced his professional career. The ice show "Prologue" was held in Yokohama in November and in Hachinohe in December. 2023 In February, the ice show "GIFT" was held at Tokyo Dome. In March, the ice show "notte stellata" was held in Miyagi Prefecture. In March and April, he appeared in the ice show "Stars on Ice" (Osaka, Iwate, Yokohama). In May and June, he appeared in the ice show "Fantasy on Ice" (Makuhari, Miyagi, Niigata, Kobe). In November, the ice show "RE_PRAY" tour began at Saitama Super Arena. The following year, it was held at SAGA Arena in Saga in January, Pia Arena MM in Yokohama in February, and Sekisui Heim Super Arena in Miyagi in April. 2024 In March, the ice show "notte stellata" was held in Miyagi Prefecture. In May and June, he appeared in the ice show "Fantasy on Ice" (Makuhari, Aichi). On September 15th, he will be performing in the "Noto Peninsula Reconstruction Support Charity Performance Challenge" in Ishikawa Prefecture.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
It has been two years since he made a new start as a professional figure skater in the summer of 2022. In 2024, he led three successful ice shows: "RE_PRAY" (Saga, Yokohama, Miyagi performances), "notte stellata" and "Fantasy on Ice".
The shoot with Mika Ninagawa for the first time in a year began with a cheerful greeting from each other, "Thank you for your continued support this year," and "Thank you." When she said to him, "You're still as young as ever!", Hanyu replied with a smile, a little embarrassed, "I'm almost 30."
"Move freely."
With those words, he made expressions and gestures as he pleased.
Various scenes were set up in the vast studio. Hanyu, who changed costumes and was photographed in each scene, moved and made expressions freely, sometimes under instructions and sometimes as if he was imagining (creating) a story himself. The people watching repeatedly let out gasps of amazement as the images were displayed one after another on the computer monitor. It was nothing short of amazing how he instantly exuded various moods - from boyish with a hint of innocence to cool and seductive.
His creativity was not limited to the way he behaved as a subject. When the BGM was played during the shoot, his body naturally responded to the music, and he also requested songs himself when he saw the costumes. There was also a moment when he saw a prop that had been set up and asked, "Do you have one more of these?" This revealed his high level of creative awareness.
The shooting has completed.
"Thank you very much," he said, and there was something light-hearted and cheerful about it. After a year, what he showed in the studio was a more mature and expressive side to him.

Exclusive interview with this magazine
[In pursuit of a distant ideal]
He is now in his third year as a professional figure skater. Reflecting on his days of taking on unprecedented challenges, he spoke about what he has gained from them and what the future holds.

Yuzuru Hanyu started out as a professional figure skater in 2022. In his first professional ice show, "Prologue," he performed the first solo ice show in history. He skated for nearly two hours, with a structure that richly conveyed his skating career. Following "Prologue," he then performed a solo show at the Tokyo Dome for the first time in history, "GIFT." The ice show filled the gigantic venue, which had never been seen before.  After "Prologue" and "GIFT," he held the performance "notte stellata" in March 2023, which was filled with thoughts and prayers for March 11. It has been a year since our interview last summer, following those three performances.
Changes in the "depth" of thinking
"When I was interviewed a year ago, it had just been a year since I turned professional. I had a desire to grow and learn more specialized things. In the year since then, I think that my technique, expression, and many other aspects have changed. Among them, I feel that I have had many more opportunities to think about expression. I have been thinking about expression even in my daily life. I think that the way I think about my show, the way I think about each program, the depth of those things has clearly changed." He talks about what triggered the change in the past year. "First of all, I had to spend more time thinking about writing a new ice story after GIFT and also about my own performance.” The new ice story was "RE_PRAY", under the title "ICE STORY 2nd".  It opened on November 4, 2023 at Saitama Super Arena. It was performed in Saitama for two days, on that day and the following day, and in the new year it was performed in Saga on January 12th and 14th, and in Yokohama on February 17th and 19th, for a total of six performances in three cities. After the premiere in Saitama on November 4th, Hanyu said the following. "First of all, I myself have learned from games, manga, novels, and various other sources, about what life is all about, how precious life is, and other similar things that everyone else roughly feels.
In games, the concept of life is really light in a sense, and you can repeat it, so you can use characters to do all sorts of things and push forward with curiosity. If you apply that to the real world, you might be a person who has the drive to grab hold of dreams, or conversely, from a different perspective, you might be a very terrifying person. But if you could do it all over again, I'm sure people would try it."
24 hours a day, always skating
In this story with a game motif, the question of "choice" is often depicted. We make choices in our lives, even if we are not aware of it. What if you choose a different option than the one you originally chose? Or would you choose the same option? This story asks the audience, which serves as an opportunity to reexamine their way of life. Of course, just like "Prologue" and "GIFT," the fact that this story was completed and received with overwhelming acclaim was due to the performance of Hanyu, who was the sole performer. And even after six performances, he did not try to stay in the same place. He continued to evolve. There were many evidences of this growth at the final performance of the Yokohama show, for example. The movements in the performance of "Chicken, Snake and Pig" where he moved forward as if resisting the shackles. The performance of "Megalovania", following a silent performance without music with only the sound of his edges resonating, was more integrated with the music than in previous performances. Not only in the production aspects, but also in the details of Hanyu's performance itself, there were traces of refinement here and there. After the Saga performance, Hanyu spent his days preparing more rigorously for the Yokohama performance.  "Of course, I trained and restricted my diet. Well, how should I say it, there are 24 hours in a day, but I spent the entire time on nothing else but skating. In other words, skating was always present, 24 hours a day.” "That's right. To put it simply, it felt like I was spending every day just working on 'RE_PRAY'." The reason he spent all his time facing skating was because he had regrets about the Saga performance. "After all, it's frustrating when I can't perform well." However, the standards of frustration have changed from when he was a competing athlete.
Still not enough
"Gradually, the focus is shifting from scores to an evaluation. If something technical that I had planned didn't go well, then my evaluation vector changes and my perspective shifts. I couldn't accomplish what I wanted to accomplish in Saga, so I was simply disappointed." After spending 24 hours focused on skating, the Yokohama performance came. After the final performance, he said, "I feel a sense of accomplishment like winning the Olympics." While he felt a sense of fulfillment, he wasn't completely satisfied. He also felt that his ability had not yet caught up with what he wanted to do. "So I feel like there are still things I need to study more. Of course, I think I'm evolving. I think I'm getting better. But I still feel like it's not enough. As I keep digging deeper and deeper, my ideals become higher, and the things I want to express are becoming more and more specific. The more my ideals become more concrete, the more I feel like I'm not catching up." He is aware that he still has areas where he needs to improve, especially in the finer details. This is something he realises now, which he didn't feel this way when he was competing in the sport. "It's impossible to realise this when you're a competitive athlete. After all, if you can jump, you win. To be honest, if you couldn’t jump, there was no point in talking about it, as the outcome of the competition was pretty much decided by how many types of quadruple jumps there are and where you put them in the program. For example, what memories do you have of this song, the background of this song, what is the story you want to express, how will the story and the song fit together, or what meaning is in the choreography, to be honest, there’s not much room to think about them. You have to complete all your technical elements in one go in the four minutes of a competition (free skate), so that's all you can focus on."
A world not in first place
Win the match. In a competition, that is set as a goal. "Since I had already achieved that, there was no way I could go any higher. If you think about it in the world of competition, I won first place, so even if I tried harder, I couldn't get any higher than first place. In other words, I just tried to see how long I could maintain that first place position.
But in the world I'm in right now, even if I think I'm in first place, it may not be. It’s a place where I can think, "I'm still at the bottom". When I look at the various works of art or technically excellent things from around the world, I feel that there are still many things I can't do, so I think that I still have a long way to go." When he moved from the world of competition, which was fixed in a sense, to a new world, it was no longer a confined space. However, whether one knows its vastness or not, whether one feels that there is an endlessly wide world out there, is up to the individual. So even though the world is infinite, some people only notice a limited space. Or, there are those who limit the space themselves.
Right now, Hanyu thinks, "I still have a long way to go." He feels like he's at the bottom. This is because he knows that the world is endlessly vast. The reason he feels this way is because he has the ambition to move forward without being content with the present. So instead of seeing the place he has arrived at as the end point, he knows that there is still space to go beyond that.
Ideals evolve
"I may have surpassed the ideal I had a year ago. But the sense of distance between me and my ideal is probably the same as it was a year ago. For example, if the distance between me and my ideal a year ago was 10 meters, it may be 10 meters, no, 11 meters now. That's how I feel. I'm living and experiencing life, I see information every day, and in the midst of that, my ideal evolves. My ideal gets further and further away. But at the same time, through what I have seen and experienced, I'm sure I’m also one step closer to my ideal." Then, after a short pause, he continued with a smile. "As long as I want to, I think I can continue for the rest of my life." The skater is still on his journey, striving towards the ideals he has built with his own will.

"CONTEXT: This was not at the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics, rather this took place at a 2024 World Cup event in Azerbaijan earlier this year, where she won the Gold Medal. These world cup events serve as Olympic Qualifiers under the ISSF (International Sport Shooting Federation).
Kim actually just won the Silver medal in the 10 metre air pistol at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Her countrymate, Oh Ye-jin, won gold in the same competition.
Whenever an Olympics is ongoing, people always tend to post clips from various other competitions in similar events (World Championships, European Championships, Asian Games, etc), and many public viewers just assume they're from the Olympics. It's actually very easy to discern whether or not video you see is taking place at the Olympics, based on cues in the background... If there is any advertising at all inside the venue, it's not the Olympics. Also, AZERBAIJAN in big letters gives it away in this video clip that this was not Paris."

Pedri talking to various Asian media outlets recently:
You are one of the most eye-catching midfielders among the young generation, and you are now taking on more tasks in the club and national team. How do you ensure your playing status and efficiency in frequent matches? Which goal are you most eager to achieve for yourself in 2024?
"Personally, I want to win the championship in the two competitions we are still participating in, namely La Liga and the Champions League. In order to achieve this goal, we train hard every day."
Which Asian players have you come into contact with during your youth training and career? Which Asian player impressed you most in the game? What stories do you have with him? What are your impressions of China and Chinese football?
"Kubo. He performs very well in La Liga and has also trained with Barcelona before. I think he is a very skilled player. I still have his jersey at home. I think the game in China is a game that is still growing, there are a lot of very good players, and I believe it will get better and better in the years to come."
Previously, Xavi announced his resignation after the season. How would you evaluate him as a coach and club legend?
"Whether as a coach or as a legendary player of the club, Xavi is an idol and a role model for all of us. In the two years he coached, our team has changed a lot. Last year we won the championship together La Liga champions, we will also strive to do our best for the rest of the season."
What goals will you and the team have for the rest of the season?
"In the league, I hope to play as many games as possible because we still retain the hope of competing for the title; in the Champions League, we will do our best to win the next knockout round and strive to go further."
You played in the Champions League knockout round for the first time this season and provided an assist. How do you feel? In your opinion, is the competition in the knockout stages of the Champions League much more intense than the competitions you have participated in before?
"Yes, in the knockout stage we are now in, the pace of the game is much faster. Compared with the group stage, there is of course a big difference. Of course, I am very happy to be able to play in this game, and I am also very satisfied to be able to send this assist to help the team."
The emergence of Lamine this season shocked everyone, and you have already played in the professional league at Lamine's current age. What advice would you give to Lamine?
"First of all, I advise him to stay calm. It is a great thing to be able to participate in the professional league at this age. He is already an excellent professional football player. It doesn't matter if he doesn't perform well sometimes, as long as he continues to train hard. I will provide him with all the help he needs. He just needs to face everything calmly and enjoy football."
Xavi will no longer be Barcelona's coach after this season. We know that you have a very good relationship with him. Can you tell us what help Xavi gave you during his coaching period?
"Xavi gave me a lot of help as a coach, and as a legendary player of the club, especially playing in the same midfield position as me, he gave me a lot of advice on organizing the team's attacks. Overall I learned a lot from him, his experience and his guidance."
When you were 18 years old, you played 73 official games in one season. Many people marvelled at your physical strength, but did you also feel tired? Do you think players today are overloaded with matches?
"After playing so many games in a year, of course, I felt tired, but during that time, I was always just excited to play. This was also the first time I had the opportunity to represent the club and the national team in so many important games. Now I consider this a very valuable and unforgettable experience. I agree that there are a lot of games now and players are under a lot of physical pressure, but at the same time we will make more preparations for this and do everything possible to maximize our physical condition."
Laporta recently mentioned in an interview that Barcelona will continue to fight for the league and Champions League this season, and everything is possible. Do you agree with this statement, or from a practical and technical perspective, which goal do you think has greater certainty?
"I think we still have the possibility of competing for the title in both competitions. La Liga, relatively speaking, is more difficult, but at the same time, it is also longer and has more games, so anything can happen. Of course, I agree with what the president has said. We are still competitive in these games and we will do our best to fight for these two championships in the rest of the season."
As more and more outstanding young players join the first team, as one of the representatives, do you think this youth team can lead Barcelona back to the top in the future?
"That's right, we are a group of very young players, whether they are young players who have joined the team or young players training at La Masia, I can see a bright future in them, so I very much believe that with our help, the team can return to the top and perhaps even created a more beautiful future than ever before."
Did you encounter any difficulties when you first joined Barcelona, such as adapting to the team? Adapting to a new environment?
"To be honest, the first division is much more intense and faster-paced than the second division, and the opponents’ skills are much better. I was lucky enough not to encounter any difficulties when I first joined the team. The atmosphere in the locker room was very good. My teammates, everyone at the club, especially the captains, have given me a lot of help and I am very grateful to them."
Do you feel that you are already a mature player on the court, such as your playing style, decisions you make, etc.?
"I am still very young, and although I already gained a lot of experience in various games, including making changes and making decisions during the game, I feel that I still have a long way to go. There's a lot to learn and I think I will eventually become a really mature player after many more years at the club."
What advice do you have for children who like playing football?
"If I give advice to children who like football, my biggest advice is to enjoy football and play this sport with your friends. Don’t care about the results, don’t care about the level, don’t care about whether you can become a professional player in the future. Just enjoy it and be happy."
Barcelona's young players like Lamine, Cubarsi, Roque and others have gradually become important members of the team. Although you are still very young, you have become a senior for them. What will you do to lead or take care of these young players?
"I will do everything I can to help them, support them in everything they do, and make them feel comfortable in this team. When they need any advice, have any questions or want to know something, they can come and ask me. I want the whole locker room to be like a big family. When they need my help, I will do my best to help them."
In recent games, coach Xavi assigned you as a left winger. What is the reason for this? How is it different from playing in midfield?
"The team now has a lot of midfielders, and as a player who can run a lot, I can create spaces in attack for the team. Being a left-winger is, of course, very different from playing in midfield, but I think this position is also very interesting. I can have a lot of touches to create offensive opportunities for the team."
You have suffered from constant muscle injuries in the past two seasons. How do you deal with injuries and what kind of adjustments have you made?
"Injuries are the worst part of football. I dealt with a lot of pain, and in order to reduce that trouble, I did a lot of activities to reduce that. I took up Pilates training, and increased the frequency of going to the gym to adjust and to avoid repeated injuries."
What do you think are the problems with the team this season compared to last season's La Liga championship?
"I think the biggest problem the team encounters is on the defensive end. We still score a lot of goals this season and have a similar offensive level as last year, but we lost more points due to defensive problems. Regarding Xavi leaving the team, this is his personal choice and we will do our best with him during the rest of the season."
Last season we saw that you had more opportunities to get into the penalty area and attack the goal directly, but this season it seems to be less and less. Is it a tactical role change? From a personal perspective, which style of play do you prefer?
"It is true that I don’t have many opportunities to enter the penalty area and shoot directly this season, but I am also trying to find other ways to help the team score goals. For example, provide some key assist opportunities and find other ways to play the ball. From a personal point of view, I like both playing styles. I have been looking for ways to optimize the team's attack in various positions."

They made wheelchair rugby history in Rio by winning their first Paralympic medal. From there, they tried to grow the popularity of the sport while preparing for their home Games. They wanted to achieve the best results, especially for people struggling at that moment with the COVID-19 pandemic. They weren’t able to do that in the end and felt disappointed.

So How To Get Your Favorite Gymnast to the Olympics... a primer
Now that we have the last of the 2023 Worlds Qualification events over it's time to go through what comes next... how do they get to the Olympics?
2022 Worlds - The top three teams from the team final earned a trip to Paris - USA, GBR, CAN.
2023 Worlds - The next 9 teams in team qualification (excluding the three from 1) go to Paris
2023 Worlds - Teams 13-15 in team qualification earn 1 non-nominative spot at Paris. That is a spot that the federation can assign however they wish and it counts against the 3 maximum that a country can send to the Olympics if they did not qualify a team.
2023 Worlds - 14 gymnasts with the top AA scores not any country that qualified a team in points 1 and 2, 1 per country get a nominative spot to the Olympics. That is it's for them by name and if they end up not going to the Olympics it goes to the next person in line their country can no reassign them. If France qualifies a team (which is likely unless the French federation manages to destroy itself between now and October) then this number goes up to 15 because they get an automatic slot as host country for 1 individual.
2023 Worlds - The highest ranked gymnast from each apparatus final that is not from a country that qualified a team in points 1 or 2, and did not qualify in the AA QF described in point 4 gets a nominative spot. If there are no gymnasts in the final that fit that criteria they go the apparatus qualification list.
2023 Pan American Games/2024 European Championships/2024 Asian Championships/2024 African Championships/2024 Oceania Championships - The top AA gymnast from qualification who is not from a team that qualified in point 1 or 2, and who did not qualify individually at Worlds.
2024 World Cups - Two gymnasts per Apparatus based on points from the 4 events in Feb-April 2024. Each apparatus is 1 per country so one country can not take both uneven bars slots but they could take 1 slot from three different apparatus.
Things to know... the order matters. If you have qualified in one of the earlier numbered steps you don't count in the later ones. So if say Kovacs Zsofia qualifies in the AA and is in the bars final at 2023 Worlds it's the AA slot that she takes not the bars one. If a country qualifies three people through 2023 Worlds then the later qualification steps wont be open to them because they've already gotten their three.
So what does that mean for your favs?
If we project the results from 2022 Worlds and use them as a guide for 2023 Worlds the teams would be USA, CHN, GBR, FRA, CAN, NED, BRA, AUS, ITA, BEL, JPN, GER. That doesn't mean these will be the qualifiers (other than the USA, GBR, and CAN who are already qualified) but they're who you expect to be likely.
The three countries that would have taken the 13-15 slots were KOR, MEX, and HUN. I think those are going to be your likely spoilers.
Now let's move to some darlings from small feds (or former Americans in new hats in some cases). Oksana Chusovitina is currently only qualified to worlds on vault and uneven bars so those are the only events she can participate on. So you say, she's got a good chance of getting the vault spot from worlds.
Well... no I don't think she's the odds on favorite. YEO Seojeong (KOR) would have taken that spot if it was awarded based on last year's worlds. Now KOR is sitting in that spoiler spot as a team so maybe they make the Olympics as a team and then she's off the table. Yeo has also done the AA in the past but she's not Korea's best AAer on paper so I would expect one of her team mates to qualify through the AA.
Chuso's best path to her 9th Olympics is likely the 2024 World Cup series but there are a number of small fed vault specialists who will be very competitive with her and I doubt we'll have any real sense what her chances are until we see who qualifies at Worlds. For instance RASMUSSEN Camille (DEN) could beat Chuso in that series but she could also qualify through the AA at Worlds and be out of that pool. And who knows if the Russians will be battling out in that World Cup pool.
Similarly I think NEMOUR Kaylia (ALG) is the most likely person to take a bars qualification out of Worlds but she also could qualify in the AA and unlike Yeo she doesn't have team mates who may qualify above her. Nemour also has a clear advantage if she's still looking to qualify at the 2024 African Championships. I think that provided she stays healthy she is a safe bet to make it to Paris.
I think floor and beam are pretty up in the air.
So now we get to the messy questions about former Americans now competing for other countries. If you map this qualification process onto 2022 worlds the AA score of the last qualifier for Paris would be 48.866. I expect that to be slightly higher at 2023 Worlds because there were a number of AAers who didn't do the AA at 2022 Worlds who will have incentives to do so here. I expect the cut off to be somewhere between 50-51.
Here are what some other names to note got at their continental championships this year in the AA.
ESCALERA Natalia (MEX) - 53.266. She will likely qualify through the AA at Worlds.
MORENO Alexa (MEX) - 51.600. Moreno has competition for the best potential AA score on the Mexican team (see Escalera) but if the fields repeated themselves at the Pan American Games she would be in the position to be the AA qualifier for the Pan American Union. If she doesn't well she goes into the thunder dome that is the 2024 Apparatus World Cup.
IRFANALUTHFI Rifda (INA) - 51.298. An AA score that I think should be in the right range to qualify, from a small fed with no competing team mates. I think if she repeats her performance from Asian champs at Worlds she has a good shot. Similarly assuming China qualifies a team and Korea qualifies 3 gymnasts through 2023 Worlds (both likely) then she's at the moment the most likely individual qualifier out of the 2024 Asian championships if she doesn't qualify at Worlds. But there is a big if. She got an 9.833 beam score at Worlds last year....
ROOSKRANTZ Caitlin (RSA) - 50.632. She came in second to Nemour at African champs, so assuming that Nemour will likely qualify in some way at Worlds then Roozkrantz has a good shot at qualifying through 2024 African champs if she doesn't do so at Worlds.
FINNEGAN Aleah (PHI) - 50.399. She should qualify at worlds, especially if she manages not to fall twice on bars like she did at Asian champs. I honestly think a lot will depend on what rotation she has to go to bars because I suspect a lot of the issues the Philippines had at Asian champs related to going to bars in the 4th rotation. If she doesn't qualify at Worlds she has a decent shot at the 2024 Asian Champs but I honestly expect her to get this done at Worlds.
BARROS Sydney (PUR) - 50.234. She also falls in the sweet spot of maybe she qualifies at Worlds maybe she just misses. She'll get a second shot at Pan Am Games a month later if she misses out.
ABDELSALAM Jana (EGY) - 49.832. She came in third at African Champs but we start getting in the iffy range for scores to qualify and there are on paper better AAers in her continental union.
DARIES Naveen (RSA) - 49.533. A repeat of what I said about Abdelsalam. She's in the cut off range but she has the disadvantage of being the likely second South African AAer so her best chance is if Nemour and Rooskrantz qualify at Worlds and then she has a good shot to fight out that 2024 African champs slot.
KVAMME Kylee Ann (PHI) - 48.765. She's not qualifying at worlds because even if she falls in the right range (and her score doesn't suggest she will) then Finnegan will 1 per country her out of the pool. She also has no chance of qualifying at 2024 Asian Champs as there are many Asian gymnasts from small feds that are better AAers. Yes she fell on bars but she just does not have the difficulty to be competitive.
BROWN Lynnzee (HAI) - 48.100. I'm going to be honest... she's going to have a tough road. She needs more difficulty to be in contention at Worlds or at the PAG. There are a number of small fed AAers in the Pan American union who scored higher than her at Pan Am Champs.
ELSADEK Sandra (EGY) - 46.699. She has no chance of qualifying for the Olympics. I hope she enjoys her Worlds experience.
MALABUYO Emma Lauren (PHI). She didn't do the AA at Asian champs so can't go to worlds but I've seen people ask about her. Her path to the Olympics is limited. She can win the AA at Asian Champs... but when was the last time she did the AA? She can also get a spot at the 2024 World Cups and I actually think she could increase the difficulty on her floor to be an outside shot there. The problem is ... will the Philippines pay to send her (and the judge) to those world cups. And will she want to miss 6 weeks of the NCAA season to do so?
If I was to take a stab in the dark I suspect that Korea, Hungary, and Mexico will all have 3 gymnasts at the Olympics and that Romania will have at least 2. But in what configurations I don't know.
