Any unwanted energies during a reading are related to our consciousness and awareness. We don't "control" spirits during tarot readings, rather we tune into the energies around us and work with our intuition to receive and interpret messages. Spiritual energies can be accepted or rejected, so if anything makes you uncomfortable feel free to disengage. It's like having a conversation, or like reading a storybook - only on a different scale. You don't have to pick a genre or a topic you don't feel good about. (Sometime we do learn certain uncomfortable truths during the course of reading, which is completely different but not "evil".)

Some tarot readers cleanse their space and call in protective energies or, rest after readings so their mental defenses are not weak (which allows for fears or negative energies to creep in).
