Jedi: Survivor Spoilers! I'm on the night shift again and have enough time to think a lot about JS. Today I read a fic in which Cal and Merrin are portrayed as Kata's parent figures, and have seen a few where it will be similar. But I don't know, their relationship doesn't feel like a parental one to me, I find Cal and Merrin too young and Kata too old for that. They are more like older siblings or something like that, they are there for Kata's, will guide and teach her. Perhaps they will have a similar relationship as Master and Padawan, which I find familial but not parental. I'm not sure what the exact term would be for that, other than found family maybe. I'm so excited to see how the dynamic of the them will show up in the next game.
Age gap wise, they're more like siblings, but sometimes siblings fall into a parental role. Cere did tell Cal to guide Kata through the darkness, and Cal always does what he's told by his Jedi Masters...
Also, I'm still trying to square away Kata even wanting to stay with the guy who literally murdered her father???? Like there's no getting away from that - Cal put Bode down, hard. I still can't believe how merciless he was at that point, even though Bode really, really, REALLY pushed Cal into it. Cal double-tapped him to really make sure he wouldn't get back up. OOF.
I'm really curious to see where they'll take Kata in the next game. It's hard to tell if she's Force sensitive or not because her comment about Tanalorr being dark and scary is pretty typical kid stuff. I'd like it if she isn't because I'm not a huuuuuuge fan of the whole 'The Force runs strong in my family' stuff (can we leave that as a Skywalker and (UUUUUUUUUUUGH) Palpatine thing please???), but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
When in doubt, always go with found family ^_^
I will write some more post-Survivor stuff once I'm ready to dig into it. I think I need at least one more playthrough!

So that is the end of Jedi: Survivor. I've said a lot of things about Cal, Bode, and Merrin over the course of my playthrough. Now, at the end, I have to say....
I take back none of it. Endgame spoilers ahead.
Merrin still suffers from Awesome Waifu syndrome all the way to the end. She is by far the most interesting character in the cast who outshines actual protagonist Cal Kestis, but who is relegated to simply filling the role of "The Girlfriend" and not getting to be explored in any capacity as an individual character in her own right.
And occasionally pitching in as sidekick whenever Bode isn't available; As is often the case in hetero romance writing, the girlfriend is prioritized far below the bromance in order of importance. She's the backup for when Cal's real emotional centerpiece isn't available to sidekick for him.
Bode, meanwhile, remains uninteresting to the end. Given how hard they were pushing the bromance, it was fairly obvious that he'd either die in Cal's arms or turn traitor. Those were the only ways this could end. Bode picked the latter, and y'know what?
There's a brief window of time when Bode is actually interesting. It starts at the moment he betrays you and ends when the actual final boss fight with him begins. Bode is a really boring supporting protagonist but he makes for a fairly interesting villain around 70% of the way through the game when the reveal finally drops. Sucks that it took that long for the game to finally start doing interesting things, but at least it finally happens, I guess.
But.
Even then.
He has a red lightsaber.
So even as his whole "I'm secretly a Jedi hiding in plain sight among the Empire to seek a better life for my daughter" nuance is being complex and interesting... He's also a guy who tortures rocks for fun. And you know how Star Wars is; They value bad guys racking up Evilness Points over complex and nuanced characterization. So it's only a matter of time before he leaps off the edge into the deep end.
And once you meet him on Tanalorr, there he goes. Lightswitching in a heartbeat from betraying Cal despite treasuring their friendship because his love for his daughter outweighs all other considerations to wailing on his daughter with Force Powers and trying to murder her because the Dark Side made him so evil and crazy and evil.
And you can't really be surprised about it. Because this is how Star Wars treats Dark Siders all the time. It's exactly what I was talking about when I said, it's entirely possible to write an interesting Dark Side villain but it's so easy to not do that instead. Bode could have been an interesting villain, but the Dark Side as a plot device makes it so easy to strip away the nuance at the last second and make him a one-dimensional monster, robbing the finale of any emotional weight.
When we met Bode, he was a cardboard cutout of a stock rebel character. His sole motive being that he wants to help Cal because he's mad the Empire fridged his wife.
And when we end with Bode, he's a cardboard cutout of a stock Dark Side villain. His sole motive being that he tortures rocks for fun because the Empire fridged his wife.
And then, of course, there's Cal. Who remains a slice of bread to the very end. Of all the Jedi characters who have existed in the Star Wars canon, Cal is one of them. And that's all the plot asks of him: Just to be a Jedi. Doesn't matter which. Any Jedi will do.
I don't regret the time I spent on Jedi: Survivor. The gameplay was more than enough to carry it along.
But the story really is some of the most Paint-by-Numbers writing I've seen in a long time.

Okay in reference to your tags on the Bode post you reblogged from me: I kinda had a theory you were the anon! And I'm honestly very glad to find someone who feels the same way about him because I haven't seen many other people (other than my sister) who do!
If you don't mind me asking, I have two questions for you: what did you think of the rest of Survivor, and what sort of Star Wars fan fic do you write? I saw you mentioned it in your bio!
Lol I do think I went through a few of your posts before sending that ask - but yes, I do agree! Bode is a lot more complicated than I think a lot of people give him credit for; he's a father and a man haunted by a lot of loss which doesn't excuse his actions, but does explain them and make me feel a good deal of empathy to him. I think there's actually a line when they're in the ISB base where Cal calls him a traitor and Bode is like...no, I'm a father
Which is really not an excuse for killing people Bode (but is a very good explanation for how he got where he is)

(interestingly, Bode is a sort of parallel to Anakin in some ways - killing and betraying people they see as family/very close friends for the people they love, even though it changes them into something unrecognisable that the person they love can't quite reconcile with)
I do not mind questions at all!
For fanfic, because that's the shorter answer, I write pretty much anything - legends, Kotor, swtor (to some extent, I haven't played through enough of it yet to do proper fic), og, rebels, tcw, extended universe stuff (and even a bit of the sequels although that has to be veru handpicked lol)
I have interacted with so much of the SW universe to some extent and it's such a good sandbox that I will dabble in writing anything lol
(currently I'm doing a lot of Kotor stuff as I finished survivor and decided to fill the hole with yet another playthrough of my favourite unfinished trilogy <3)
As for Jedi Survivor, Imma put my thoughts under the cut because I have...a lot of them lol (there will be spoilers)
I love the graphics, so SO much
Each planet felt different and unique and reminded me how much I loved to play JFO
Also the worlds felt a lot bigger? I think it's because I didn't really do much side stuff, just kinda beelined the plot so a lot of the side quest stuff was just kinda there as fun background NPC chatter lkl

It's being survivors of two separate genocides by the same tyrannical government and even when you search elsewhere, you still belong at each others side
And it's the Merrin talking Cal down when he's about to kill Denvik and it's Merrin giving Cal space to work out if he wants a relationship or if that wouldn't work but letting him know her own intentions
That moment on Jedha where she calms him down from a nightmare but then takes her own comfort just by being near?
And it's Merrin in general lol my darlingest fave <3
Also! After that kiss on Jedha after everyone has gone back in, my brother said (as a joke) "and now they have sex!" And then it immediately cuts to morning

Which just makes me think of the tinned meat which is a...really weird thing to be thinking about

In fact, all of Ramblers Reach, I really like that they gave you a main base that's so...connected to people in this game??
Also that garden, I could spend all day in that garden
And the High Republic stuff! I still think it's weird that everyone is treating it as if it's ancient history when it's two hundred years ago BUT I really love the aesthetic and the story
I tried getting into the high republic books a while back but only managed one before I had to return them to the library, but this game has made me really excited for the high republic game and has inspired me to try and read the books again
Shout-out to Dagan Gera for being sufficiently unhinged for me to like him, and Rayvis for giving off massive Kotor!Mandalorian vibes
And Bode was a very interesting twist villain as looking back in the game, you can see it almost
(also my older brother called him being a traitor twelve minutes after meeting him which was either incredibly perceptive or he saw it online and is thing to make me think he's incredibly perceptive - either way, he got ridiculously pleased when he was proved right which did not fit with the mood of Cordova's murder lol)
And Kata! It's definitely going to be some time before she fully trusts Cal etc. etc. HOWEVER, we now have a daughter and that is wonderful (I'm living for the found family)
And CERE!
I WAS EMOTIONALLY DEVASTATED IT'S LITERALLY THE SECOND TIME CAL HAS HAD TO CRADLE THE BODY OF HIS DEAD MASTER YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH THIS HURTS ME
And it was the way Greez was so uncharacteristically ANGRY after Cere's death - and just- dhhfjebidnde
On a less devastating note - Cal, my dude, should have had to have had time to recover from both the slash wound from Dagan and the blaster shot from Bode which were both to the upper torso
Like...they caused enough damage in the fight to be a weakness but you can just walk it off apparently??

Zee - I was so suspicious of Zee to begin with because she was so cheery but her voice kinda sounded like Nikola from the Magnus Archives and like-
Yeah I was fully expecting betrayal from Zee right up until we got back to Rambler's reach and I realised...she's just cheery, that's just her personality
I talked to her the bare minimum lol, I couldn't get creepy talking doll out of my head
That beginning sequence on Coruscant though?? That moment with the Jedi Temple where Cal realises what's happened and you can see the horror and bone deep resignation within him (and that's probably the first time that he properly starts wondering if he can do anything about the empire, after all there's that whole plot where people are like...settle down a bit)
I honestly wasn't that attached to the rest of Cal's crew who died - apart from Mags, literally JUSTICE FOR MAGS 2023, SHE DESERVED BETTER
There were so many little bits that made me genuinely laugh and feel things throughout the game and it felt a lot like Star Wars which is a big thing in its own right
Also Cordova being there threw me off but it was a nice surprise, if a bit weird lol as I was fairly convinced he was dead/in the unknown regions - but hell, I kinda understand it (even if us finding him in the last game might have made his appearance a bit more understandable)
I do have some things I'm not so happy with (some story choices in particular, and the way they presented Cal's slow descent to the dark side being the main ones) but I'm overall really happy with the game
It was the sequel that jfo deserved and it was it's own game in it's own right and I really enjoyed playing it - now I've finished the story, I'll probably stop doing such intense playing, but I do genuinely want to 100% complete it which says a lot, because I don't usually have the patience to do that
There's so much I could probably say that I can't think of now (and I don't think I've said anything about BD-1 which is a travesty of the highest proportions because my boy <3 I missed you <3 I'm so glad you're here and thriving <3) and I'm not really getting into the things I disliked because it would bring the post down (and also I need to be a bit more eloquent and a bit more awake for that one lol)

you've probably been asked this before, but-- thoughts on jedi fallen order? your star wars meta/fic/etc is always my favorite and i'm very interested to hear what you think of the new game!
I liked it a lot!
So, as I’ve said before, I haven’t played it; I watched a playthrough on YouTube about a week or so after it came out, so I’d gotten spoiled for it despite trying to avoid spoilers, and the particular playthrough I watched actually had the sound cut out on two of the big scenes, so that was a disappointment.  Watching it rather than playing it means that I definitely missed some things that I’ve seen people mention about it, and I’d like to play it at some point if I can get the tech to cooperate, though that likely won’t be for a while.
I was a little wary about Cal Kestis going in because of the comments that the creators of the game had made about not wanting to have a female/POC/alien main character, but for me Cal was good enough, sweet enough, and interesting enough to overcome that.  I really liked how much weight JFO gave to trauma, living with it, and overcoming it, with Cal, Cere, Merrin, Trilla, and the other characters.  Obviously the poncho is Peak Star Wars, and BD-1 is very sweet.  And I love Inquisitors.
I know JFO has gotten some criticism for being ~yet another padawan survivor story, but Cal is so distinct from either Kanan or Ahsoka that that’s not really how it feels to me, and I think his interaction with Cere, Trilla/Second, and the Ninth Sister really make his story unique compared to the other two.  I love the beginning of the game; it’s such strong world- and environment- building, and the strong sense of Cal’s personality really comes through in his introduction (headphones, blasting music, “I’m trash, I’m just not approved trash” -- he’s peak 2019 gen Z, in my millennial POV).
As far as the actual plot goes, it’s *flips hand* pretty much eh.  It’s a MacGuffin and there’s no way around that; it’s also revisiting plot points from TCW and the Charles Soule Darth Vader comics.  I can understand why Lucasfilm would want to continue to revisit that particular plot point but also, I’m tired of it.  As far as JFO goes, the MacGuffin is mostly an excuse for the journey, which was...interesting.  There are parts of it I really liked; sorry, my dumb brain loves gladiatorial fights even if that probably wasn’t, like, necessary.  Kashyyyk was fun; it’s fun to see Saw Gerrera again even if I’m also kind of like “dude, you haven’t changed your armor in fifteen years?”  I enjoyed seeing Dathomir again even if I have mixed feelings about the choices made insofar as the worldbuilding, but Merrin was really wonderful.  The Zeffo...I still feel that the Zeffo, aesthetically, belong in Stargate rather than Star Wars; their actual use in the game also felt a bit more Stargate rather than SW, for me?  I mean, they’re also a MacGuffin, but I suppose insofar as SW go they’re on the same order as Loo Re Anno’s species from the Han Solo comic or the Rakata from the EU, so not really something that doesn’t have a place in Star Wars.
The Inquisitors. I love Inquisitors.  I don’t necessarily love these Inquisitors. I unfortunately got spoiled for the Second Sister’s reveal as Trilla/Cere’s former padawan, which kind of affected how I felt about her, and I’m also in the FB cosplay build group for Second and it’s a little cutthroat, so that affected it too.  She’s...fine?  Something about her just doesn’t hang together for me, and I can’t quite put my finger on what it is at the moment.  The Ninth Sister has such a strong personality from the Darth Vader comics, and while she’s in character between the comics and the game, it also means I was a little taken aback by her abrupt ending.  (And I note that it feels a little weird that Trilla gets the name and the tragic backstory and the personal attachment and the not-actually-redemption, but Ninth doesn’t get any of those.)  It was also weirdly surreal for me to see the Fortress Inquisitorius, a.k.a. the canon version of the Crucible from Backbone, but tbh I think the decision to put it on another planet/moon(?) in the Mustafar system actually weakened it.
I got spoiled for Darth Vader’s appearance and that was one of the places where the sound cut out on the playthrough I watched, so it didn’t quite have the effect that it probably would have done had I gone into it cold.  That said, Cal and Cere should probably be dead; as I’ve seen pointed out, Vader hasn’t been allowed to kill anyone of significance in the new canon, which kind of undercuts him.  (The closest he’s come has been Jocasta Nu in the comics.)
All right. The ending. I don’t like the ending. Not because I really thought that Cal and Cere should have refounded the Jedi Order, but because I feel like they put the destruction of the holocron in the wrong place; I think they should have destroyed it to keep it away from Vader.  The conscious decision made not to re-found the Order is really uncomfortable for me, especially in light of the way that the new canon has treated the subject over the past couple years.  I was talking about this with @reena-jenkins a while back, so I’ll just copy and paste what I said there.  (Note that this was back in November, before TROS came out.)

So yeah, I have some problems with the ultimate ending decision, but as usual a lot of it comes down to how that intersects with other plot lines that Lucasfilm has done over the past five/six years.
Another thing I kept thinking of throughout the game was something one of the creators said -- either in an interview or at SWCC earlier this year, I can’t remember which, that there was a lot of debate on where to put the hyphen in Jedi: Fallen Order, i.e. that it could have been Jedi Fallen: Order (though title-wise that doesn’t stand up as much).  I do like how much emphasis there is on “fallen order” -- the Jedi Order, of course, but also the Nightsisters, the Zeffo, the Inquisitors and Purge troopers as a kind of twisted version of the Jedi and clone troopers, even the structure of the Republic being corrupted into the Empire.
One thing that took me by surprise with JFO was also how much intersection it had with Galaxy’s Edge!  Not to the extent that I would have noticed it if I hadn’t already been to Galaxy’s Edge, but having gone and also having the kind of brain that literally just absorbs stuff and then retains it.  Like, for example, the Galaxy’s Edge sporks that are now no longer used because people kept stealing them; they’re used in one of the meals on the Mantis.  Cal remaking his lightsaber and using the parts you can get at Savi’s got picked up by a couple of news outlets; I think this is actually a bit unfortunate, because they went for the Galaxy’s Edge lightsaber proportions for many of his lightsaber options and in my opinion, those are less elegant proportions than usually seen in Star Wars, so it ends up looking clumsy to me.  Another proportion thing that follows Galaxy’s Edge -- the holocron, both Cere’s and the MacGuffin holocron; the Galaxy’s Edge ones seem to be proportionally a bit bigger than the holocrons seen in Rebels and TCW, and the ones in the game follows Galaxy’s Edge rather than TCW/Rebels sizing. The Nightsister zombie crate in Galaxy’s Edge may also be a JFO reference rather than a TCW one, though obviously it could also apply to both.
I really enjoyed the Clone Wars/Order 66 flashbacks, though actually Order 66 was ANOTHER place the sound cut out!  I told you that it was the most dramatic reveals where I lost sound!  I loved that Jaro Tapal was a Lasat; I also like that, as far as I can tell, some of Cal’s specific movement types (wall-running and his tendency to be like “cool, gonna climb that”) seem to be more Lasat-inspired than other types of Jedi movement we’ve seen before.  I really like the design of Jaro’s lightsaber; I remember in the promo I was confused about the fact that it didn’t seem to be proportional to Cal, but of course it’s not!  It was made by a Lasat for a Lasat!  Order 66 is always such a mess -- and actually, I’m struck by how different Cal’s and Caleb’s experiences of it were?  I think one thing that the game made clear to me is how lucky Kanan got, in all ways.
The ending is obviously setting up for a sequel; I don’t really think Cal and Cere should have survived, but it we get a decent sequel out of it I guess I’m okay with it.  I know I’m missing details in this review, but I really did enjoy watching it; I liked the characters, I liked the worldbuilding, I think it did some really intriguing things even if I don’t agree with every decision made. (And, selfishly, I like my Inquisition better than the canon one.)

A Disturbance in the Force
I would like to preface this with the fact that I have never played one of the Soulsborne games. Mostly because I have never enjoyed the idea of constantly dying and losing almost most of my progress. As such, I was a little sceptical about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order when so many reviews often drew comparisons with From Software’s stable of very challenging and nigh torturous forms of entertainment. Still, this was the first time in a long time that I would be able to enjoy a single player Star Wars game after the cancellation of Star Wars 1313 and the other one that was being developed by Visceral Games with Amy Hennig at the helm of the narrative. Despite Electronic Arts mishandling the licence, I was still ready to risk it on Respawn Entertainment’s attempt at carving their own single-player story in the dense Star Wars universe.

Players are cast as Cal Kestis. A young Jedi Padawan that barely survived Order 66 when he fled to the planet Bracca. For five years, he scrapped ships for a living. The only remnant of his time being a member of the ancient order is his master Jaro Tapal’s lightsaber. It isn’t long before he is pushed into a situation where he uses the Force to save his friend. Within moments, the Inquisition arrives, looking for the Force sensitive hiding among the workers and Cal is forced to run. He is soon joined by Ceres and Greez. With Cal in tow, they hope to restore the Jedi Order by finding a holocron that contained a list of Force sensitive children. Their first stop? Bogano.
The initial set-up maintained my interest throughout most of my playthrough. While there were moments that frustrated me as I played through Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, I managed to push myself to each story beat. Unlike say Dark Souls, much of the story is told through cutscenes and events happening around the characters. As such, it is more similar to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice than the other games in From Software’s repertoire. The similarities, however, are still incredibly prevalent: meditation points serving as bonfires, enemies returning to the fight after you have rested, and experience points being depleted when Cal falls in battle.
It makes sense, as well, that Jedi: Fallen Order is not a power fantasy. Cal is still learning in ways of the Force. His connection cut-off, much of the game is involved with unlocking abilities that any fan of Star Wars would know: Force Push and Force Pull to name a few. In this entry, Cal also had access to Force Slow, Wall Running and the terribly named: Jedi Flip (should have just stuck with Double Jump). 
Yet, despite the exciting premise, I found myself fighting the controls in combat as well as exploration. It didn’t help that there was barely any ledge detection or correction when Cal flew off his swinging vine, though I had the other vine centred just so, and into the abyss. The slides down ice or mud also proved tedious after the first two times. Is it any wonder that I prefer the exploration in Uncharted and Tomb Raider?
Perhaps I should have bumped the difficulty to Jedi Master, but on Jedi Knight, it felt difficult to lower the stamina bar of the humanoid enemies since they simply weren’t aggressive enough for me to parry it all down. Instead, I had to be on the offensive in a game that favoured more defensive play. In saying that, however, humanoid enemies were much easier to read than the wild fauna on the various planets. I hated the spiders, rats and alien goats. Particularly when they swarmed poor Cal. 
Somehow or other, I muddled my way through. But not without lowering the difficulty when I fought against Gorgara on Dathomir and the Second Sister in the finale. It did not help that the last stage made it difficult to see if the Second Sister was using normal parry-able attacks or if it was an unblockable one. Nor did I like the fact that Cal’s lightsaber attacks were so weak. Even after unlocking additional damage to be dealt, it was still almost negligible in the grand scheme of things. Worse was the fact that the healing stim canisters barely seemed to recover any of Cal’s health. I would have much preferred that they healed Cal to maximum. Instead, I was flailing even when I asked BD-1 for help. 
But perhaps others would like such a challenge. As I said before, Soulsbourne combat has never been something I like in a game. Always, I have liked the sense of power and escapism video games have presented. Jedi: Fallen Order was not it. In any case, half of the time, it felt like my deaths weren’t actually my fault but a result of poor input or lag. There were times when I swear I had blocked an attack but it did not register.
As for the rest of the story, it was an enjoyable adventure around the galaxy. The narrative, however, kept it simple with a few cameos. The big one here being Saw Gerrera. I was a little disappointed, though, to recruit one of the more interesting characters near the end of the game. Before we had unpacked more of her personality and where her arc might go, Jedi: Fallen Order came to an end - much like the first season of a bingeable television series. Nightsister Merrin, we barely knew you.
I also liked uncovering the backstory of Ceres and the Second Sister, though much of it was fairly predictable. Cal, too, proved a little too trusting of the various people he met. Some that had even tried to kill him previously. It would have been better if he had been more guarded and cynical - like, say, a bounty hunter exploring the underbelly of Coruscant.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order proved to be a good first step back towards narrative-focused games for the Star Wars franchise. While it was not the best title for this awkward blogging gamer, I still enjoyed my time exploring every nook and cranny. Finding secrets and Force Echos became my main focus as I navigated my way through the Metroidvania-esque levels. Combat aside, I would not mind delving into a follow-up title as the ending left the future of Cal very much open. And while it takes a while to adjust to how the game expects you to play with its janky controls, perhaps there is something to this supposedly Soulsborne formula. 
I’m still not going to play the Dark Souls trilogy, Bloodborne or Sekiro, though.

I literally cannot say. I love it as a cohesive whole. It is a fantastic piece of storytelling. As a writer I am in complete awe. It's so satisfying. It's why I keep replaying it.

Greez talking about how he’s not ready to talk about the nerf incident. There's a lot going on in that conversation.
There are also some amazing conversations aboard the Mantis, including one involving scented candles.

Nothing. Fallen Order is the perfect sum of its parts.
