The S1 finale for Astrid and Lilly Save the World was so soft and solid and good. I love these two fat besties and their romantic interests and weird sidekick friends. I also love the teacher being set up as the big bad for S2 if we get one (and I hope we get one!!).

The amount of people angry with the show on twitter, even the lead writer blocking fans because of that finale.
Ooof, I had seen some anger but didn't realize it'd gotten that bad. I don't think it's deserved, tbh!
I was surprised and I didn't love it as a decision but it wasn't even to the extent of the breakup Stepril had (I did actually laugh ruefully to myself as it was happening, remembering that one ask). It felt pretty mild, as far as bad endings go?
I suppose it's partly this vicious cycle of our shows not getting that much attention or success so we feel the need to promote them and feel that extra ownership and investment and then if things don't go well, it might make us feel extra frustrated and even foolish. Like, we worked for it and then it betrayed us. We really shouldn't be put in the position of having to promote shows to begin with... And of course the particular trauma we have about bad endings. I just don't see how this feels nearly as bad as those. This isn't meant to be an ending, or them ending even, if it doesn't get renewed.
I do have other notes for the finale, though! First, the Candace/Lilly moment WAS weird as it played out?? Not that it happened, but that it was left like that, with Lilly just looking at her and then seemingly cheery and closing the portal moments later. I do wonder if a scene was cut there? The show's been so good about the details, that was an oddly jarring edit.
Second, I actually wish Brutus himself had returned for the final battle. He's such a big part of the show and team, while I'm glad his betrayal wasn't worse, it felt kind of random sending him off.
And lastly, I like Eggs and all but I would have LOVED if the person who inexplicably couldn't be frozen was Val. She's been an easy target for so many monsters and so resistant to their existence, I'd have loved if this was either the first time she realized what was going on, or, even better, DIDN'T realize and still somehow helped them.

I'm definitely with you on not thinking the Fortwell ending was particularly bad. I really don't get the level of upset, and I say that as someone that's been in more than enough wlw fandoms to know the baggage that comes with it. They didn't break up, Lilly wasn't actually responsible for her death nor could she have saved her, so it's not like it would realistically last long. It was a bummer but it doesn't ruin or taint their story or relationship to me at all, S2 or not.
No, right, people seem to be focusing on endpoints in time more than ongoing stories. It's like last season every time Marina on Station 19 had any kind of drama, people acted as if it was something being done to them instead of them going through a journey.

Man! I do not understand why so many people are losing their shirts about that finale. I think there were some editing choices that needed better consideration. I don't know how many season finales these writers have written but I felt their lack of experience showed with how they went about ending things. Though it didn't feel particularly vicious towards the LGBTQ characters IMO. And now I really, really, REALLY want a season two. So job well done.
Well, maybe the next anon can explain why?
And another anon:
I get people being frustrated that things didn't go the way they wanted. Especially when you consider the scarcity of decent gay teen rep on TV at the moment. AALSTW was such a breath of fresh air and so lovingly written. The animosity towards the writers is a bit appalling. We wouldn't even have such strong feelings if there hadn't of been such strong writing and character development. I could see being angry if they got a second season and trashed it but to not even give them a chance? Wow.
If I were to guess, it'd be a combination of factors, as the second anon said, the dearth of rep, poor previous experiences, and the specifically high expectations for this ship based on how it's been written so far and the resolution of major angst in just the previous ep.
I'm also seeing people who've campaigned for and promoted this show and now feel resentful and foolish. I mentioned this in the previous ask but it's just such an unfair situation we're put in where we're the ones who have to promote our shows to get more of them. People shouldn't be having to do WORK to watch media. And of course, once they do, there's a sense of ownership and expectation.
Still, I don't really see this ending as being that bad! I just don't. If people want to bring up their own past baggage, then it's fair play to say, hey, a moment of anger after her mom just died is hardly comparable to what happened to other ships. And I've also seen comparisons to the het happy endings, so then again, if you want to compare their treatment, Fortwell got so much more time and story and development than Sparrow and Astrid, and Val and Eggs don't even begin to compare.
And I will say, people have to tone down how they talk to people online. This isn't just a queer thing or a queer fandom thing or even a fandom thing. I've often seen people blame queer fandom for going after queer creators harder, but the problem is the same as it is across all areas, people being super invasive and horrible. Social media's really taught people they can interact any which way, that crossing of boundaries is the issue here, not any specific group of people. There are queer fans right now who're super upset and staying within their own circles, and that's perfectly fine.
I'm kind of sad for all of us, the cast and crew who're not able to fully enjoy their finale, the fans who were fine with the ending and are now being caught up in this, but also the fans who're upset. Whatever brought them to feeling like this, that's just not a good place to be. I hope everyone can begin to appreciate the good stuff a bit more.

Okay you got me! The ‘that’s my girl/best-friend’ moment was way too cute and Astrid and Lilly really looks like a good time I gotta watch. I’ve seen the Buffy comparisons and it looks like it’s a little more silly and fun and gay, which I love so I’m in. Thanks so much for the content, I loved gif-watching and not knowing what’s going on other than gay and demons lol these past couple of weeks <3
Heh, I'm glad you enjoyed the gifs! There's actually a lot more I haven't done, both Fortwell and just the cute Astrid and Lilly moments in general.

Are you planning to gif any of AALSTW? I am dying for someone to do the Fortwell hug when Candace becomes unfrozen. It made me think of their first hug by Lilly's locker that caught her by surprise. I love to see the relationship growth.
i would love to gif them! There's been a lot of growth and a lot of good content in this ep for sure. Just trying to get some of these asks done. :) I can only do gifs or asks and am kind of bad at managing which myself. :x

It is weird that in the Astrid and Lily show. I don’t dislike any character?
Even I ended liking Tate.
I think you're just following the path the writers have laid out, everyone IS likable in some way. Tate did a LOT to redeem himself and tbh, for all that everyone says the hets were in a happy place, I felt a little something between Tate and Astrid. >_>
But even someone like Michelle, she's so silly, I enjoy watching her however over the top she is. I'm almost a little sad she's now the villain because if she'd decided to slowly flesh her out, that'd have been so fun. But on the other hand, we already have Candace and Tate as the two hot and previously kinda shallow characters who're a lot better now.
And another anon:
Is that a Canadian thing or do people generally call the bathroom the shitter?
Lol, I think neither Canadians or people generally call it that, but some people do. I'm sure it was just used from Tate to highlight how hilarious it was that they were all meeting there.

Hi there boo,
The finale for "Astrid and Lilly" felt like a deja vu. Same thing happened to "Hightown" fans, where the ending was terrible (so many fans were outraged)..but at least Hightown was renewed! Not so sure about AALSTW though. The show has potential, but after *that* finale the show might have lost a huge chunk of its vocal fan base on various social media platforms. Keeping my fingers crossed for a 2nd season though.
PS. Have a blessed Ramadan starting this weekend 😊
Hiya! Wait, they're being compared to Hightown? That's on such a different stratosphere of angst! I also don't think, though, that the Fortwell ending is bad enough to NEED fixing as strongly as Hightown did, BUT, from what the Hightown showrunner was saying afterward, I dunno if she really felt that Jackie was ever gonna reconcile with Leslie. They seemed to be just a step inn Jackie's journey while Fortwell seem very endgame romance.
But yeah, the irony of needing another season to fix a specific thing and possibly losing any chance of because of the fans pissed off at that specific thing. D: Whatever happens, I'll be happy we got this season and feel sad that this talented, considerate cast and crew didn't get another one.
Ah, thank you! To you if you celebrate and all my other followers as well. :) For a second I was like, wait, that soon, but doesn't Ramadan start April 2nd and then I realized this weekend IS April 2nd. March has somehow seemed so very long and also passed in the blink of an eye.
