Final Project
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Artist Statement:
For my final project, I created a photomontage that encapsulates the nostalgia of my childhood. I chose this style because it allows me to infuse creativity and detail into a visual narrative of my memories. Each photomontage represents significant moments and joys from my past that have profoundly shaped who I am today.
The first montage centers around the Nintendo DS, featuring a collection of video game characters. As an only child, many of my fondest memories involve daily gaming sessions on my DS, which sparked my enduring passion for video games. This piece brings back a flood of nostalgia, reminding me of the games I once loved and the dreams of my younger self who aspired to design video game characters and create fantasy worlds.
The second piece montage reflects the TV shows I grew up with, which inspired me to pursue art and led me to become an ATEC major. Growing up with a Japanese mother and an American father, my childhood was a blend of anime and American cartoons. I was captivated by the different art styles and animation, and I vividly remember wanting to become an animator, creating my own stories and characters.
The third captures the essence of summer in Japan and its culture. As a child, I was bullied at school for bringing Japanese food for lunch, which made me resent my heritage. However, every summer, my mother and I would visit my grandmother in Japan. Those summers were my escape from life in America. I would play in the streets with neighborhood kids, visit local candy stores, and enjoy the annual summer festival in my grandmother's town. Although I still visit Japan every summer, attending the festival continues to evoke the same nostalgia I felt as a child. Over time, I’ve come to appreciate and take pride in my culture.
The final montage is simple, yet it represents who I am today: an artist. Growing up, I spent countless hours drawing and crafting in my bedroom, with art supplies scattered everywhere. My mother would often take pictures of my drawings and compile them into albums. Looking back at those childhood drawings fills me with nostalgia, reminding me of the time I spent alone with my imagination, dreaming of one day becoming a talented artist.
When creating these pieces, the one detail I put into each piece was adding a noise filter to mimic the quality of an old camera and evoke the early 2000s aesthetic, the era in which I grew up. I wouldn't be who I am if I didn't experience the things I did in my childhood.

BLOG PROMPT - Art Event Assignment
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back in February, I attended the Dual Lives: Chinese Opera in New York City, Photographs by Alan Govenar showcase. This gallery was held in the lobby of the Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communications (ATEC) building at UTD.
Walking through the display and observing the photos, I picked up on the strong contrast seen between each pair of photos, which greatly represented the "Dual Lives" aspect of the piece. On one side, the performers are in regular clothing with tinges of blue being present throughout their attire. On the other side, you have the exact same performer covered head-to-toe in vibrant orange and red dressing paired with makeup and a striking headpiece. This contrast is interesting as blue and orange are opposite colors on the color wheel, meaning they contrast well with each other. I'm curious if that compatibility is why each performer in their regular attire has an element of blue present on their outfits, whether it's a splotch on their shirt or the color of their tie. This significant contrast caught my attention and greatly enhanced my analysis of the photos.
Another element of these photos that caught my eye was the performer's expression. While their gaze was focused and intense, there was an element of humanity that shined brightly through the gaze, which I believed was enhanced through the lighting and editing done for each photo. Each subject was shot on a pure black background, ensuring that there was no "background noise" to take away from the detail of the performers. They are the focal point of the piece, and the lighting further adds to the piece's deep contrasts. Judging by the shadows and highlights, the light source appears to be meticulously directed from above and to the side. This placement emphasizes the shimmer of the costume and the contours of the face while evoking the reverence typically reserved for sacred rituals and performances, where every detail is illuminated with purpose and grace.
When looking at these photos, I felt a sense of both admiration and stillness. The moment felt personal and private, and I was gifted a window view into that moment. I believe Govenar wanted to accentuate this feeling of quiet awe, where we acknowledge the spectacle of the performance but also understand its solitude. That feeling deeply resonated with me, and I ended up getting a lot more out of this gallery than I was ever expecting. I'm thankful for the experience.
Photos were taken using an iPhone SE 3rd Gen under natural and artificial lighting conditions (showcase display lights and sunlight through windows).

https://www.paperdue.com/customer/paper/autism-126845Autism has reached epidemic proportions between American children with cases increasing amongst adults and children worldwide. Treatments initially began with helping children improve their social and communication skills. With medications like risperidone and aripiprazole to treat irritability, children with autism were managed short-term. However, these medications only present a temporary fix with symptoms continuing after stopping of medication and symptoms recurring even with higher doses. For there to be a suitable alternative to pills and traditional methods of treatment, current research must demonstrate efficacy and cost efficiency concerning new autism treatments. This literature review will highlight a variety of new treatment approaches along with ways to monitor, evaluate, and understand how autism effects a child to show what can be done to help children with Autism. In an article by Klintwall, Gillberg, Bolte, & Fernell, the authors discuss the use of intervention programs based on applied behavior analysis as the first step in treating autism, particularly in young children. Not only is ABA treatment beneficial on a group level with findings suggesting its efficacy, it is also beneficial on an individual level. "Several factors have been suggested to explain this differential response, including child characteristics, intensity of training and level of trainer fidelity to the protocol" (Klintwall, Gillberg, Bolte, & Fernell, 2012, p. 139). Furthermore, its use can be applied at any age, with research proving its continual efficacy in teens and young adults. However, ABA treatment remains contentious. As the article states: "The structured nature of the intervention program and use of reinforcers can be uncomfortable for parents and trainers in pre-schools" (Klintwall, Gillberg, Bolte, & Fernell, 2012, p. 139). Preceding psychotherapy research done in adult groups reveal findings that show therapist allegiance to treatment methods is related to the gains accomplished. This means that the trainer or person who utilizes an ABA treatment must be loyal and adhere to the structure and rules of the treatment program in order for the ABA treatment to prove effective. If the trainers or parents feel the program is not suitable for their child, the results will prove ineffective. Simply put, although ABA treatment is a viable form of treatment, just like with anything else, if it is not implemented properly, the results will not yield a benefit to the child or produce a reduction in the level of autism of the child. In a study by Magiati, Moss, Yates, Charman, & Howlin (2011), they discuss the need for increased validation brief measures and their inclusion of the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) to evaluate the general progress of young children with ASD or autism spectrum disorders. In their study, the ATEC was "used as part of a comprehensive assessment battery to monitor the progress of 22 school-aged children with ASD who had previously taken part in intensive home- or school-based intervention programmes in their pre-school years" (Magiati, Moss, Yates, Charman, & Howlin, 2011, p. 302). Their methods involved surveying the parents of children with ASD who were again survey five years later to measure cognitive, adaptive behavior, and language skills, along with degree of autism symptoms over the equivalent period. The results suggest the ATEC had great internal regularity at both time points. Measuring the degree of autism within a child is a must in order to determine whether or not a treatment method is working. Using tools like the ATEC to assess a child's progress is key in seeing which treatment approaches work and which do not. As the authors state, "ATEC total and sub-scale scores remained relatively stable over time and were highly and significantly correlated with cognitive, language and adaptive behavior skills and severity of autism symptoms at both assessment points" (Magiati, Moss, Yates, Charman, & Howlin, 2011, p. 302). The study provided preliminary evidence suggesting ATEC may be beneficial for evaluating children with autism. Systematically monitoring the progress of children with autism will assists trainers and personnel to know if their teaching and techniques are effective. It can also help parents determine where the child may be lacking with language and cognitive ability. In a study done by Schreibman & Stahmer (2013), they discuss the fact there is currently no agreement on the precise behavioral treatment of choice for directing language in young nonverbal children with autism. Much like many of the articles featured in this literature review, most of the techniques and treatment options examined here have not been researched and are considered new in the world of autism treatment. In the article, the authors discuss the kind of study they performed. "This randomized clinical trial compared the effectiveness of a verbally-based intervention, Pivotal Response Training (PRT) to a pictorially-based behavioral intervention, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) on the acquisition of spoken language by young (2 -- 4 years), nonverbal or minimally verbal (?9 words) children with autism" (Schreibman & Stahmer, 2013, p. 6). 39 children who participated in the study were unsystematically assigned to either the PRT or PECS condition. Participants took regularly, 247 hours of involvement through 23 weeks. "Dependent measures included overall communication, expressive vocabulary, pictorial communication and parent satisfaction" (Schreibman & Stahmer, 2013, p. 6). The results led to children from both intervention groups showing increases in spoken language skills, with no noteworthy variance amongst the two conditions. Although PECS was just as successful in teaching the children functional words, it was harder to implement thus making it not the primary choice for parents. This study helped illuminate the way to test out methods and seeing which ones are easier to implement. Any technique easy to implement will allow for more practice between the parent/trainer and child leading to better results. In an article by Silva, Schalock, & Ayres (2011), the article examines what causes severity in autism. They state after performing a study on 130 children, sensory and self-regulatory impairment is the cause of severe autism in children. Their model consisted of: "To present a model for autism showing that impairment of sensory and self-regulation is the core deficit that underlies delays in social/language skills and abnormal behavior in autism; and to demonstrate the efficacy of a treatment for autism based on Chinese medicine" (Silva, Schalock, & Ayres, 2011, p. 421). This kind of research allows for better understanding of what causes high degrees of autism in children. Becoming aware of the kind of problem a child may have in regards to autism will aid in determining the most appropriate treatment option. The type of treatment as described by the authors: "Treatment is a tuina (massage) methodology directed at sensory impairment known as Kai Qiao Tuina or Qigong Sensory Training" (Silva, Schalock, & Ayres, 2011, p. 421). The treatment, although unconventional, proved effective in reduction of core behaviors and validated the use of newer treatment options to reduced autism related symptoms in children. The randomized controls provided not only validation for this kind of treatment but also a marker for what causes intense autistic episodes in children. Autistic children need treatment that focuses on sensory and self-regulation. In an article by Stahmer, Schreibman, & Cunningham (2011), they examine the application of early intervention for children with autism aged 4 years or younger. "Although the etiology of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and early development of the ASD are not yet well understood, recent research in the field of autism has heavily emphasized the importance of early intervention (i.e. treatment before the age of 4 years)" (Stahmer, Schreibman, & Cunningham, 2011, p. 229). As seen through the previous studies, in recent years, roughly since 2010, numerous methods have been confirmed to be effective with some children however no treatment absolutely improves the symptoms of ASD or works for all children who have the disorder. The heterogeneity and evolving nature of the disorder make it improbable that one definite treatment will be superlative for all children, or will be successful for any one child during his or her educational vocation. Therefore the article scrutinizes early research authenticating dissimilar technologies for customizing treatment. "A discussion of current research on pre-treatment characteristics associated with differential outcomes in treatment, including child, family, and practitioner variables; and how specific intervention techniques address each of those pre-treatment characteristics is provided" (Stahmer, Schreibman, & Cunningham, 2011, p. 229). The eventual objective of this article is to empower practitioners to prospectively modify treatments to particular children and their individual needs, increasing the overall rate of positives results for children with autism. Research that advances comprehension of how to couple clients with effective treatments will lessen the outcome inconsistency that exemplifies early intervention research currently, and delivers the well-organized distribution of resources during the serious early intervention time-period. "This type of research is in its infancy, but is imperative if we are to determine a priori which treatment method will be most effective for a specific child" (Stahmer, Schreibman, & Cunningham, 2011, p. 229). In conclusion, new treatment options are available for children with autism. Research indicates autism is best controlled when the child is very young, younger than 4 years old. Not one treatment will work for all children with autism. It is best to customize the treatment according to the child's needs. Monitoring and regularly evaluating the child's progress will see to whether or not the treatment is effective. More research concerning the emerging treatments for autism will supply children with a much needed lifeline to society and the world around them. Founders Falls. Gentech solutions
Seraph and Tish sat in the office of one Dr Floyd as he went over their paperwork, tapping his pen to it occasionally as he read. "Thank you for making time for this, I know you both have very busy lives, as do most that chose this path of procreation." He says looking over them. "Now we have found some troublesome genetic markers in your DNA Mr Seraph, but they are easy enough to work around. All we need is for you to sign off on this and provide samples."
Tish chewed her lip. "I know how Seraph dies it, just him jerking it into a dixy cup, but how do I... Give you a sample?"
Dr Floyd took a breath. "Well, we can create a child from just blood samples, but for the highest chance of success, we need a egg and sperm, meaning IVF."
Tish blinks. "And IVF is?"
Dr Floyd explained.
Tish pales. "You are going to shove an ultrasound wand up my pussy, then a needle?"
The doctor nodded. "You will be anethitised, so you won't feel a thing, but in the days following you will experience abdominal cramping."
Seraph grabbed his wife's shoulder. "Not to late to back out."
Tish took a deep breath. "No, I want this, I will get probed.... But you are not hearing the end of this Mr Dixy cup."
Seraph chuckled as Dr Floyd coughed. "Mr Seraph, Miss Fuego, we also need to talk gestation speed, do you want to wait the traditional nine months or four months?"
Seraph's brow wrinkled. "Four? But Paragon Protectors are grown a lot faster than that."
Dr Floyd nods. "While we use the same technology as Crey, such an accelerated grow is detrimental to the growth of a healthy brain, it's why Protectors are for lack of a better word, simple."
Seraph looks to Tish, then Dr Floyd. "Anything else you need from us?"
Floyd taps his paperwork. "For the child, we need a recording of your wife's heart beat and voice, aural stimulus is very important to fetal growth."
Seraph looks at his wife, holding her hand. "This is a lot to go through... You up to it?"
Tish fishes out her phone. "Give me dates, I will have to cancel some hero shit to do this, but I'm in."
Dr Floyd hands over a sheet of paper. "Fine, just sign here and we can get started."
The two of them put down their signatures, Dr Floyd taking the paperwork. "We can book you in for egg harvesting and recording tomorrow if that's good for you?"
They nods as Tish starts cancelling appointments.
The next day Kings Row medical.
Seraph waited in the hallway, his part was over and done, even if it was a little embarrassing to have a nurse offer him material to help him get a sample. The door opened and a towering black skinned woman with red eyes smiled at him. "Your wife is recovering Mr Seraph, you can see her now."
He nodded his tanks and stepped into the hospital room, Tish sitting up in a hospital bed, still wearing a gown. "So... You okay?" He asked, stepping up to the bed side and noticing some device under her gown attached to her chest.
"Well mister Dixy cup, I am numb below the waist and now know what an alien abductee feels like, right now they are just recording my heart beat."
He rests a hand on her shoulder. "So... Four months?"
She nods. "They also gave me a script for something, lact something or other.... Any idea what the fuck that's for?"
He chuckles. "Tish, they gave you a script to lactate."
She gives him a confused look. "Lac what?"
"For milk to feed the baby... You are going to feed the baby right?"
She blinks. "Fuck I did not even think a out that, how the fuck am I feeding the baby if I'm out heroing?"
He rubs her arm. "Well, you can use a pump to collect for later use?"
She eyes him. "How atec you some much more collected about this than me?"
He bends down and kisses her brow. "Because I rose Neph as a baby all by myself, I know what I am doing.... But for Neph I gave her formula and boy did she hate it."
Tish sighed. "Thank fuck I got you by my side." She took his hand.... Then punched him in the arm.
"What was that for?"
She grinned. "Pay back for you getting the easy route Dixy cup boy."
