Eurovision 2004 - Number 3 - Athena - "For Real"

The final instalment of this year's Athena triptych, and of course it's the song that won Şarkı Yarışması 2004 before going on to represent Türkiye in Istanabul at Eurovision proper. For TRT, picking Athena was a brave, brave choice , but one that's so right. Even though they are ska band, they fit into Eurovision remarkably well. They would be a band that would have been a wise choice for any country twenty years later - they'd still get top ten to this day.

At the national final, For Real trounced the other two songs. It received almost four time the number of votes of those two songs combined. It's brash, in your face, replete with the brass section that unites ska music with Balkan music even if the stage representation of that is left to a solitary trombone.

Lead singer Gökhan Özoğuz's voice is well suited to the genre. He's got the power and spiky energy that's needed to punctuate every word with precision and let it impact exactly on the braincell he intended. Sneakily he subverts any flag rules Eurovision had in 2004 by revealing the peace/CND symbol appliquéd to the lining of this jacket. With the crowd going mad for the home team, this is such a home run for a host act - it's truly one of the best ever selections for Eurovision.

Results wise, they finished fourth, sandwiched between Greece in third and Cyprus in joint fifth. Rarely has the scoreboard looked so keenly knowledgeable of the local politics. As all of these countries celebrated the outcome together, the entire competition felt like a hatchet burying ceremony for the conflicts of the 1970s, if not further back in time. If you add in that Serbia & Montenegro finished second, you could even think about going as far back as the Ottomans. It's in this regard that I think that Türkiye, TRT and Athena played the perfect hosts in 2004.

I'll leave Athena partying on the Eurovision stage in a moment of Europe wide glory and celebration for now. Just who could have topped them from the national finals this year then?

Eurovision Fact #342:

In total, there have been 11 sets of twins at Eurovision.

The first pair to appear was the Kessler twins, who represented Germany in 1959. The Kesslers finished 8th overall.

Next, Luxembourg was represented by Sophie and Magaly Gilles in 1980. The sisters finished 9th overall.

In 2004, the Turkish entry, Athena, was comprised of twin brothers Hakan and Gökhan Özoğuz. The pair finished 4th in the Grand Final, the best result by any set of twins at Eurovision.

North Macedonia's 2009 entry, rock band Next Time, also consisted of twin brothers. Martin and Stefan Filipovski unfortunately did not make it to the Grand Final, placing 10th in the First Semi-Final.

The following year, the Belarusian group 3+2 brought twin sisters Alena and Ninel Karpovich, the "2" in 3+2, to the Eurovision stage. The group finished 24th in the Grand Final.

2011 saw two sets of twins: John and Edward Grimes representing Ireland as Jedward, and sisters Daniela and Veronika represtned Slovakia as TWiiNS. Jedward finished 8th in the Grand Final, but TWiiNS only placed 13th in the Second Semi-Final.

The following year, Jedward returned to represent Ireland, but only managed to place 19th in the Grand Final.

In 2014 there was once again two sets of twins: France was represented by the group TWIN TWIN, which consisted of Eurovision's first fraternal twins, Lorent and François Ardouvin, and their friend Patrick. The group finished last, 26th, at the Grand Final. On the other hand, Russia was represented by the Tolmachevy Sisters, Anastasia and Maria. The duo also won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2006. At Copenhagen, they managed to place 7th in the Grand Final.

In 2017, the group OG3NE, representing the Netherlands, consisted of three sisters, two of which were fraternal twins: Amy and Shelley. The two are a year younger than their sister Lisa. The group placed 11th at the Grand Final.

Finally, for this year's contest (2023), Azerbaijan will be represented by TuralTuranX.

Eurovision 2004 - Number 11 - Athena - "Easy Man"

More Athena. They've already hit number 28 in my list this year, now they've got number 11 with the other song that didn't get sent to Eurovision from Şarkı Yarışması.

Easy Man really makes use of their brass section for highlights and flourishes. and for the chorus. I love the extra beats in two of the bars of that first chorus. Just enough to make you think "what was that?", but not enough to derail the flow from the bass. That bass is really putting in a shift in this song. This is possibly less punky than I Love the Mud on My Face and in a more alt-rock direction in which the band were to turn for later releases.

It's the song that finished second of the three in Şarkı Yarışması, but frankly all three could have gone to Eurovision and done well.

For this instalment of the Athena story I'll relate what happened next. After the success of Eurovision in Istanbul they were invited to the German European-Turkey festival, broadcast live. Their fourth album was released too, and they immediately started work on the fifth. In total they've released eight albums toured extensively.

In 2007, the father of twin brothers singer Gökhan Özoğuz and lead guitarist Hakan Özoğuz died, and the band took a break for two years. A move to London followed and their sound moved away from ska towards alt rock over the years, but they maintained their popularity.

They caused controversy in 2016 with a music video for their song Ses Etme (Don't Make a Sound). It features three drag queens on a night out culminating in a physical assault outside a nightclub. The band support of the queer and trans community and condemnation of anti-trans violence brought a lot of anti-trans commentary on YouTube. The comments on that video are sadly still deactivated today.
