Peeta's amputation

One of the things I really wish we'd gotten more information for in the books was the impact of Peeta losing his leg. On himself, on his habits, his reactions, anything really. We don't even know how badly he took it because around that time all Katniss was able to describe was him (understandably) being just happy to have survived it all along with her, plus he was putting on a brave face throughout the interviews, and maybe even in front of her so she would feel less guilty. And, I get it, most of the stuff I'm going to mention is just slice of life and maybe not that important as plot points, but I find them super interesting, for the perspective if anything.

Would Peeta's self-esteem take another deep dive after that? With everything happening during that time (moving out of his parents' house, his falling out with Katniss, being viewed differently by the rest of the district, living alone and possibly lonely, his romantic hopes crushed, PTSD from the Games, etc etc etc) he had a lot of triggers seemingly supporting those thoughts of being useless and uneeded and generally not good enough.

It's so frustrating to lose a limb and have to basically relearn everything from the beginning. How to navigate stairs, how to get in and out of a sitting position, how to balance and not tip over, stuff you've been doing esentially your whole life. And Peeta was athletic, he worked manually, he trusted himself to be capable of doing physical things, so that might have hurt a little more.

How about medical complications? From weird sensations to nerve pain, possibly phantom pains, everything related to his prosthetic leg (which, depending on the type, can get uncomfortable in sooo many ways, especially since he's still a teenager who's growing). And he was dumped at a place with basically no medical care at all, let alone anything specialized. Which, ok, was part of everyone's life in D12 already, but it must have still left a bitter taste... There was no one around to know much about his state, (exept maybe Ripper the liquor seller) and he had to make do on his own.

What if the Capitol had chosen his prosthetic more for aesthetic functions and less for functional? @whenthewallfell has a fantastic post about it, complete with illustrations!

Peeta's artificial foot getting tangled in the vines in the second arena and impeding his ability to run was no funny business. With prosthetic legs, there's usually different kinds for different functions. Your average foot people use to be able to walk is stiff and does a horrible job at supporting these sorts of activities. That's why equipment like running blades exists for amputees who want to be running and jumping. And you have to switch to that before the activity! Peeta apparently never got one. Even if he had, he would have to carry the alternative equipment around in the arena.

Speaking of that, even with a single type of artificial leg/foot, adjustments are frequently needed throughout the day. Most people as far as I understand remove the prosthetic to sleep, but also ball -and-socket models at least move around and need to be put back in place because it gets uncomfortable (sleeves -stump covers- sliding down, etc). The fact that Katniss never mentioned anything like this means that either he was actively not doing it in front of her or she just doesn't wanna talk about it (or maybe his leg is some fancy Capitol tech that doesn't work that way?)

Also, he's got to be hungry. All the time. He needs more food after the amputation, because the rest of his body is compensating for the lost limp and he has to use different muscles/nerves/tendons/etc. that are not designed spesifically for this. The same thing means he gets tired more easily. So Peeta being that active and training for the Quarter Quell while battling insomnia and nightmares with an amputated leg? Even harder than we thought.

Y/N rubbed his horse’s face in comfort, trying not to attract attention to himself from the other past winners of the Hunger Games. It doesn’t work so well. “Y/N.” The young man turned his head and was met with Finnick Odair’s sea green eyes. They’re possibly the greenest eyes that Y/N has ever seen. Greener than grass or the leaves in the trees. “Hello, Finnick. Or is it Mr. Odair?”

He chuckles and gets closer to him, tossing a sugar cube from his left hand and into his right. “Do you want a sugar cube?” He has his hand sticking out in offering, but Y/N doesn’t take it. It’s then that he notices that Finnick’s outfit left little to the imagination. “I mean it’s supposed to be for the horses, but I mean who cares about them, right? They got years to eat sugar, whereas you and I… Well, if we see something sweet, we better grab it quickly.” He licks it in a slow manner and tries to pretend like he’s not seducing Y/N with sugar.

Finnick Odair was as close to a living legend as you could get. He won the sixty-fifth Hungers Games when he was only fourteen years old. That already put him at a higher advantage than Y/N. His beauty was also the key to his success. Tall, athletic, with bronze skin and golden hair, Finnick Odair was a force to be reckoned with, despite his flirting attitude. He won the games with a silver trident that was given to him by sponsors. In a matter of days, the crown was his and the whole Capitol was drooling over him and his success.

Whatever the case, Y/N wasn’t going to allow Finnick to charm him like he had everyone else in his life. He was beautiful. Stunning. And if Y/N would admit it out aloud; he might even have fallen for him as well. But it doesn’t change the fact that he was the enemy and wouldn’t hesitate to kill or hurt Y/N the second he got the chance.

Y/N shook his head. “No, thanks. But I would love to borrow that outfit someday.” He looks down at Finnick’s outfit. If you could call it that. He was draped in a golden net that was knotted at his groin so he couldn’t technically be called naked, but he was as close to it as you could get. With a pretty ocean blue necklace and a shark’s tooth that hung for a cord. Finnick smiles and looks him up and down. “You look pretty terrifying in that getup. What happened to the handsome little boy suits?” He licks his lips, which probably drives most people crazy.

“I outgrew them.”

“You certainly did.” Finnick agrees. He steps closer and runs a hand over Y/N’s outfit. “Shame about this Quell thing. Now, you… you could have made out like a bandit in the Capitol. Jewels, money, anything you wanted.”

“Well, I don’t like jewels. Though, I wouldn’t mind a necklace as pretty as that one you’re wearing. And I have more money than I need, so… what did you do with all your wealth anyway?”

“I haven’t dealt in anything as common as money for years.” Finnick tells him.

“Well, then how do people pay for the pleasure of your company?” Y/N asked him.

“With secrets.” He told him softly. His lips were so close to Y/N’s, that could kiss him if he wanted. And he did. As shameful as that was to admit. “What about you, boy on fire? Any secrets worth my time?” His voice was smooth and husky and Y/N was sure this was how Finnick entrapped all those men and women into his bed. Y/N blushed, but tried to hold his ground.

“None that you would be interested in. Besides, everyone seems to know my secrets before I know them myself.”

“Unfortunately, I think that’s true.” He smiled sadly as he looked to his side."Though, Peeta and Katniss are coming.” He pops another sugar cube in his mouth and smiles charmingly. "Have a good day, Y/N. I’ll definitely be… catching you later.” He winks and saunters off, but not before he bends down to pick up an imaginary object that he dropped and shows off his muscle toned ass in his net outfit. All other Tributes look on in awe. Y/N looks away with a blushing face.

How do you think Katniss and Peeta look like? Like, details about their appearances that aren't mentioned.

I kind of love this question because I have a lot of thoughts about it.

Peeta has hair just long enough to fall over his forehead, but he always makes sure to keep it neatly trimmed around the ears. His sparse eyebrows, light, almost the color of his skin. Almond-shaped eyes, small for his round face. The color is light, sweet blue. Completely kind. Flat nose, cheeks that rise when he smiles. He has broad shoulders to carry the heavy sacks of flour; thick arms, to knead the bread dough; He takes after his father, body practically made for the bakery. Not exactly athletic, but very strong. Hands with short, thick fingers always seem too big to manipulate brushes with such precision or to make such perfect drawings. He is full of moles and freckles on his body, due to his fair skin.

Katniss has thick long straight hair. Always escaping the braid, she always ends keep putting her hair behind her ears, she hates anything in her eyes. That's why she never cuts her bangs. Her long hair ends up framing her face even longer than it already is. She has thick eyebrows and right in the middle of them, even though she's so young, an expression line. Big eyes, alert, dark greyish color, like the color of a very heavy rain cloud. Katniss's eyes are easy to read. From fury, to sadness and joy. Everything is written on her face. Thin nose and deep cupid's bow, with a thin mouth. She doesn't have a lot of cheeks, like her father. When she smiles there is just one dimple on the left side. His fingers are long and thin, nails are always bitten. Her knees and elbows are bony.

None of them are particularly attractive, or stand out for some reason. They are normal, people you would see in any crowd. I love them so much 💞🌟 Looking forward to writing the toast babies' appearances lol.

Bonus: Appearance of Gale Hawthorne.

He's handsome, that's the first thing you see. Hair so straight it's always pointy on top of his head. Thick eyebrows, almost meeting in the middle. Complementing his long, gray eyes, always suspicious. He has prominent cheekbones and a slightly crooked nose. His lips are thick and match his prominent chin. He has strong shoulders, even if thin arms and legs. His hands were covered in calluses and scars, as were his forearms. His smile is sweet, even though he almost never smiles, when he does he seems to be a boy again.

You know those 2 who are obviously into each other but have somehow not told the other, but literally EVERYONE knows, even the teachers know. It’s embarrassing for everyone. Peeta was in math class watching Katniss sneeze as if it was the most amazing thing he’d ever seen and people had to witness that. Katniss was standing in the hall, watching Peeta play kickball as if he was the greatest athlete of all time. People saw her with her mouth hanging open. I think fashion in D1 changed over the years I headcanon that by the events of tbosas they had 70s.80s insperd fashion by Katniss time they had a quite luxury outfits there is also alot of elements of businesses wear while they are the wealthiest distric they still would prioritize comfort and practicality and there is work uniform for every business

As for the Velvereen thoughts I have plenty

Like I said before I I headcanon her being a triplet she is the youngest out of her sisters by 10 minutes satina is the eldest twin and mullberry is the middle twin

Due to the fact that Velvereen faced alot of envy and people often tried to take advantage of her and her family because of their wealth she often has a hard time trusting people and always second guess their intentions she also has constant fear that people are judging her and constantly side eye whoever she suspects is judging her

That's one of the reasons why she befriended and eventually feel in love with facet I headcanon that facet is someone who wears his heart on his sleeve and doesn't ask for anything and is also a bad liar he Also doesn't judge anyone for being emotional , she found comfort in the fact that she can always get the truth out from facet and that he would never use her and he didn't care that she is from a wealthy family

Her favourite sweet is chocolate cake with strawberry cream and facet got her one on their first date

I headcanon that district 1 has a program to help poorer citizens of the district and Velvereen is a volunteer in this program she helps making food for the poor citizens and bake for orphans

Was closed off from friendship for 2 years when she learned that her friends only befriended her for her money when she was a kid

Is suprisingly a good Baker she Also plays tennis she is a average student her personality is more athletic than academic

People assume she is a tomboy but really she just keeps her dresses for special occasions she Also DESPISES eyeshadow satina can beg her to put some all she wants she won't add eyeshadow

She fidgets with anything around her neck wither it's her collar her zipper and even though she is not a accessories person she always has a necklace on because it's her go to for fidgeting

She absolutely hated Palmyra first it was her being late to bring food then it was her getting angry at Velvereen for sharing with facet and telling her to abounded him then throwing the biggest fit when she saw facet comforting Velvereen and making it clear she is acting that way because she hates livia and so Velvereen should hate facet wich started a shouting match another one happened when Palmyra suggested that Velvereen act more "Capitol like " and that the Capitol viewers could relate to her if they saw her like them wich Velvereen wasn't having it how could they relate to her when they don't view her as a human being and gawk at her like an animal and have delightfully watched as d1 children were murdered she called Palmyra crazy and delusional right to her face

She gave Leo's friends a hug at his funeral and the next day bought them food and toys and new clothes and they shared their memories about Leo

Her nickname is venny and she rides a bike

She was weary of panlo and terrified of lamina because it was the boy from D9 who killed jade and the girl from 7 that killed Leo despite remembering how terrified both kids were when they killed them and facet reminding her that none of the tributes are their enemies

She has a bit of temper and might unintentionally lash out and scream if someone got on her nerves

When the hunger was taking over Velvereen started biting her hand and at some point facet had to pull her hand away because she was close to breaking skin

Kinda assumed that she could fight if she grabbed a weapon and wacked people over the head with it like a tennis ball and facet was looking at her like:😑😑😑😑that won't work, and she replied with: I KNOW BUT WHAT ELSE AM I SUPPOSED TO DO?

Also ofcourse she and facet cuddled every night at the zoo she was going back and forth between being like: I have to kill to survive to stupid teenage girl in love who is happy her boyfriend finds her beautiful even at her dishevelled and dirty state (sorry)

I was once doodling her and accidentally made her very tall so headcanon that she is rather tall don't ask about her hight I am bad at measuring it

A/N: Continuing my insane 10 years of posting fanfiction, may I present a oneshot! Years before there was the behemoth that is the Outside Chance universe, an Anonymous traipsed into my inbox with a very specific request: "Katniss and Peeta are dating but go to separate schools. Peeta goes to private school so his friends (or enemies) doesn't believe Katniss exists. Maybe some sexy time when she tries to cheer him up. Then she shows up at his school or their schools are at the same sporting event and she makes it clear that he is hers."

This is the result! I followed the prompt fairly closely on this one so it features the secret dating trope. Weighing in at a mere 6,350 words, it is a snack of competitive athlete/college au Everlark. Parts of it may be cheesy and I really do wish I'd given Johanna a Bingo card (much more realistic goal) rather than a Bucket List, but oh well.

Since it is such a short piece, I never considered expanding it. If anyone has a suggestion that tickles the muse, I'd be more than happy to revisit this world. If not, enjoy a read/re-read!

my elaborate mags headcanon

eta: lol i have edited this like five times to add details that I forgot.

Sixteen-year-old Mags Flanagan lives with her elderly grandmother who suffers from dementia, one-armed uncle (he lost it in the war but made the mistake of telling Peacekeepers a shark bit him) and cousin and is Reaped for the 11th Annual Hunger Games. She strongly suspects the Capitol-loyal Mayor of choosing children from Rebel families on purpose (he is naive in thinking eventually the Capitol will be appeased). Her Uncle feels incredibly guilty about her predicament. Her lobsterman cousin must race back from waters near District 13 (aka Maine) to look after the grandmother who should not be left alone. We learn the people of District 4 have always known District 13 was not destroyed (they can see it from their boats).

The small, redheaded girl has little hope of winning, especially compared to her tall, athletic District Partner, Tack, who is surprisingly easy to talk to and willing to team-up with Mags. She had thought him a bit of a jock. Tack's family were also Rebels and he has A Lot of Opinions on how the Capitol uses terror to keep the districts down. He would prefer to die at Mags' hands, or any other tribute than the muttations like the snakes that got Coral the year previous. He knows several District 4 kids who had nightmares about the snakes. He is very high minded, so obviously he will die. (Tack is blonde and has a polisci major vibe.)

Mags is more like Katniss in that she just wants to get back to her grandma. (She's old and might wander off a cliff!) But she does see his points.

Locked in cages, the tributes are interviewed by "the Gamemaker boy" (Snow), and Mags watches him very carefully as he charms some of the other tributes, particularly the female ones. Mags is, for once, grateful to be a lesbian because she forms a bond with Tigris, who is hired to make the tributes look presentable for the interviews, instead--both queer, both raised by their grandmothers and close to a cousin. She comes to realize Snow and Gaul never intend to stop the Hunger Games. She sees darkness in him and thinks he distrusts women (reader will know this is baggage from tbosas), thinking they are manipulative.

The Tributes are thrown into the ampitheater arena (same as 10 and prior) but it has been gutted and circus-themed, then filled with freakish muttations. There are different "rings" where different mutts are located. Mags and her partner work together and survive the lions, bears and--finally--an electric eel (as seen at the end of TBOSAS movie) which Mags evades mainly due to her ability to hold her breath for several minutes thanks to years of freediving in District 4. She is greatly affected by Tack's death.

When she emerges from the arena, she finds Snow made himself (the Ringmaster)--not the tributes--the star of the show, for political advantage. Mags is rarely allowed to speak in public--though her image is widely used for publicity purposes (see Capitol Couture) though Mags thinks it is Tigris who really made her striking. But she has a falling out with Tigris because she takes a dim view of Coriolanus, whom Tigris still thinks will stop the Games once he has more power.

Mags returns to 4 determined to spend as many good moments as she can with her grandmother (who no longer recognizes her, but that is okay because they are together) and hopes to prepare the children of 4 for the ongoing "forever war." She speaks out about her experience in the Capitol at events in 4 and eventually over the shipboard radios (mags basically goes on a podcast). Most people in 4 don't have TVs. Snow has her silenced with a poison that immobilizes much of her face. She helps her cousin run for Mayor in the hopes of finding a "better way" to chose kids for the Hunger Games--though she does not think any child should go only knows that it's not going to stop.

Slight Mags/Tigris but it doesn't work out. Epilogue set after the 70th Games, where Annie's disorientation reminds her of her grandmother. Annie very much wanted to be like the Mags of the posters the Capitol produced when she volunteered. But Mags knows that version of Mags was just an illusion. And Mags understands why the death of Annie's district partner nearly destroyed her. Themes about perception and reality, dementia, psychotic breaks etc.

Even though Mags' grandmother didn't know who she was at the end, it didn't matter so long as she felt safe and happy. Annie and Finnick give her a sense of family that she thought she had lost when her wife (who was not Tigris but that is okay) was killed by Snow. She is happy in this moment.

OKAY HEAR ME OUT NOW FOR A SECOND.

I’m literally obsessed with this pair at the moment and I don’t even know what’s going on between them. I didn’t even know who that man was… I still don’t have a clue

BUT I’m pretty confident that this could be easily turned into an Everlark AU.

Katniss is the singer, obviously because she can sing, and Peeta is the athlete because yes.

She doesn’t even like sport, but Prim does, and begs her to find someone that could make them go. Katniss is a famous singer so it doesn’t take much effort, but she really doesn’t want to go because she hates being stopped in public or being filmed when she isn’t aware of it. At the end she does go because she doesn’t want to hear Prim complain (and also because we need to make Katniss and Peeta meet).

I don’t really know what happens after a match, but Prim is obsessed with a specific player, and guess who it is? I think you guessed it right. Now they are being escorted out, but Prim asks Katniss to please make her meet him because he is her idol.

They meet him when he is leaving the locker room and well…

Peeta recognizes her, not just because she’s mad famous but because he is literally obsessed with her voice from the first moment he heard her debut song on the radio. He doesn’t know what to do, because he doesn’t want to appear like a creep but he is also staring at her like she is the most beautiful women in the world (he thinks that she is)

He would like to say something but he’s the same Peeta that didn’t say a word to her for eleven years or so in hunger games, so he just gives them a weird smile and an autograph on Prim’s shirt without saying anything.
