SEX boutique

Ran by Westwood and Mclaren in the 1970s, the “SEX” boutique (formerly named “Let It Rock”) functioned as both a clothing store and a hub for the punk community and social outcasts alike.

SEX offered a range of fetish and bondage wear, supplied by specialist labels such as She-And-Me, London Leatherman and Atomage. Designs by Westwood and Mclaren were also sold within the store. 

The store boasted a striking and iconic aesthetic- the sign outside read SEX in large, padded plastic letters giving the illusion of latex, alluding to the wares sold within. The interior was decorated with graffitied excerpts from Valerie Solanas’ (the radical feminist artist who famously shot Andy Warhol) “SCUM manifesto”, a scathing critique on how men have ruined the world. 

Further decorations included chickenwire, rubber curtains that covered the walls and a red carpet.

Some of the most notable customers of SEX included the 4 original members of the Sex Pistols, Adam Ant, Siouxsie Sioux and Steven Severin. Johnny Rotten performed his audition to be in the Sex Pistols in the boutique, as the store was a haunt for the band members.
