Just saw someone compare Wesley's betrayal to Dark!Willow, saying it was unfair for the team to cut him off for a much smaller crime.
If Dark!Willow had flayed Dawn, she'd have been toast. No matter how many crayons she cried over. Who Willow targeted and why she went off the deep end is as important as what she did in terms of the characters accepting and forgiving her actions. She tried to destroy the world, but didn't.
Her only real victim was Warren, the only objections to that are based on abstract moral arguments rather than an a true concern for Warrren. On an emotional level, he deserved to be killed. The Scoobies (or at least Buffy) just don't feel they have the right to actually make that call.
Connor was Angel's son. He didn't deserve to be sucked into a hell dimension, Angel didn't deserve to have his son taken from him. The betrayal here is much more personal, so the characters have a more difficult time getting past it.

I can’t make up my mind whether I hate all the romances in ats s3 because I have no connection with the characters or because they’re just very badly written, but I strongly suspect it’s a bit of both.
The whole angel/cordy romance seems very poorly conceived. Angel’s love for buffy has always been built up as this incredibly pure soulmate thing (excuse me while I throw up), so that should be the very obvious elephant in the room, but it’s never addressed by either of them. Also, if Angel were to bang Cordy, is he going to experience that moment of pure cringiness that turns him evil? Can he just bang whoever he pleases as long as it’s not buffy, is that the standard now? Again, not addressed. Also, the chemistry between Angel and Cordy? I’m not feeling it.
The whole love triangle between Cordy, Angel and Gross Slug, ehhhh, so predictable and paint by the numbers, uninspired dreck. Cordy and Gross Slug somehow have even less chemistry than Cordy and Angel, and their ‘romance’ is incredibly shallow. Also, the way Cordy fawns over Angel so much is not cute. This lack of self awareness actually reflects very poorly on her.
The other love triangle between Wesley, Gunn and Fred was equally poorly done. First of all, Fred is a cute and nerdy girl and as such is a character I should like, but... she’s just so poorly written. She has the personality of a goldfish and after more than a season I still barely know anything about her, her drive and motivation, she’s just... there. Also her nerdiness is so poorly written, either by someone who either hates nerds or just doesn’t get them. And because Fred is so poorly written, it’s very hard to understand what actually draws Wesley or Gunn to her, aside from her just being eye candy. And if you were to ask me what draws Fred to Gunn, I honestly couldn’t tell you. Again, this ‘romance’ is skin deep.
The only interesting relationship that picks up towards the end of s3 is Wesley/Lilah. And that’s despite how badly written Lilah is. Would it actually HURT you writers to make her at least a LITTLE competent? Can you give her at least ONE WIN to make her feel like a credible villain that actually poses a threat? I guess not. Everyone at Wolfram & Hart have one collective brain cell and that one cell is by now seriously malfunctioning too.
This is a bad show and by this point I’m hate-watching it, and also I want to get to the point where Faith reappears in the story.

Okay, this opening scene (3.07 Offspring) has somewhat solidified my suspicion that James in 3.01 Heartthrob was kinda full of shit.
He was massively salty about Angelus selling out Darla and Elisabeth, used this to accuse Angelus of being incapable of love. The episode seems to support this accusation, suggesting that despite prior moments of tenderness, Darla and Angelus would have no problems letting the other die.
And yet - Angelus saved James in that episode. He warned James against attracting attention, but didn't leave James and Elisabeth high and dry when their reckless behavior put them all in danger. Angelus and James were outnumbered and surrounded by experienced demon hunters. Using Darla as bait allowed he and James to escape.
A bit cold, sure. But all four of them survived the encounter. Darla was Angelus' sire. He was 14 at this point, she was 161. There's literally no reason she wouldn't have been just as capable of defending herself as Angelus. If Elisabeth or Darla had been hurt in this encounter, James definitely would have mentioned it. So if Holtz and his men found the girls, it stands to reason they managed just fine.
And if Angelus does not believe he's actually putting Darla in real danger, how is this a callous display of his lack of care towards her? How is it a betrayal?
I was on the fence about what that episode said about Angelus and his relationship with Darla, then along came this episode. Four years after the Heartthrob scene, Holtz says he doesn't trust Angelus to actually give up Darla. This furthers supports the idea that Angelus' actions in the prior flashback was actually either an outright trick (Darla and Elisabeth didn't go to the docks) or a strategic manouever of some kind (luring Holtz and his men somewhere it was easier to fight/escape).
Darla also comes to save Angelus, showing that they will come through for each other - if there's actual saving that needs to be done.
