The Assembly Picnic Incident

           First semester at Norwegian Wood New Age Learning Centre (N.W.N.A.L.C.) would start in just two days. Over the summer Priscilla had purchased all the books from the summer reading list (which were promptly stacked on a shelf and forgotten), found a spelling tutor (but never contacted him), bought a new uniform (she had grown two more inches), and made plans with friends (they all fell through). She was ready.

Her best friends Carl and Clarence, however, were not. Carl had yet to buy school books and supplies, he needed a haircut, and he wasn’t sure if he was technically re-enrolled or not. Clarence needed to buy new glasses and find someone to carpool with.

The three friends were standing under a tree eating lunch - pizza for Carl, a sandwich for Clarence, and candy for Priscilla - along with Oliver, Henry, and Ridge. Oliver was silent, preferring to observe, while Ridge, who was very fond of the sound of his own voice, was telling Henry about his latest summer adventure.

Priscilla zoned them all out and looked around at the other students present. Lilly and Hannah were walking around arm-in-arm, singing “Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da,” Mary and Regina were playing flashlight tag underneath the new building, and Rodney was texting his newest lady-friend. Sadly, Ivan was not present; he never came to these kinds of things.

Suddenly Ivan was forgotten. Someone had just arrived that Priscilla didn’t recognize. He must be a new student as she knew everybody at N.W.N.A.L.C. She tried to remember names from the student enrollment list her father had gotten – he taught The History of the American War Between the States and Reconstruction from the Canadian Perspective at N.W.N.A.L.C.

Mark. It must be Mark, the only new male 10th grader. Priscilla knew immediately that he would be popular, especially with the girls, what with his easy smile and eyes bright with intellect and a spark of mischief. The real question was would he be popular with Priscilla and her friends?

Mark was making his way to the group under the tree. Introductions were made. He stood across from Priscilla and easily conversed with Carl, as if they were already friends. Clarence grinned and raised his eyebrows at Priscilla. She hit him.

Mark then left to meet everyone else. Priscilla knew he’d be back. She could tell he would fit in well with her friends. Also he forgot to pack a lunch and they were the only people with extra food.

Honestly, Priscilla thought, who forgets to bring food to a picnic? She wasn’t sure about him just yet.

A snowflake fell on Lilly and she screamed. Everyone ran inside. Everyone ran back outside when they realized it was just a drip from a tree.

Lilly screamed again when she heard thunder. Everyone ran inside. Everyone ran back outside when they realized it was just Mary burping.

Mrs. Whynd, the upper school administrator and chairwoman of the board, announced the beginning of the school tour, and everyone ran back inside. The group walked into the first classroom, but Priscilla, Clarence, and Carl didn’t follow. It was their third year at N.W.N.A.L.C. and they already knew where everything was. Mark noticed and hung back with them wordlessly.

As soon as the group was out of sight, the friends ran down the hall, trying different doors. Classroom, closet (they pushed Carl in so he’d have to “come out”), locked, classroom, classroom, bathrooms (already been explored), playground.

Playground.

           A silent challenge was accepted and they raced to the two swings. Clarence and Priscilla got there first, leaving Carl to sit on the slide and Mark standing. No one spoke. They didn’t need to. In Priscilla’s case, she didn’t want to. A summer spent in seclusion had done wonders for her spirit, but she had missed her friends, and just being in their presence was a comfort. Even Mark. He really did fit in with her and her friends and it felt like he had just always been there.

Suddenly there were raised voices from inside.

“Do you think it’s the apocalypse?” Priscilla asked Clarence.

“Or the rapture,” he said with mock concern.

“I hope we don’t get left behind,” Mark added.

Carl frowned at them. “They’re probably just looking for us.”

Wet blanket, Priscilla thought, rolling her eyes.

“We better go inside then,” Clarence suggested.

They went inside and joined the group which was heading outside for N.W.N.A.L.C.’s annual Australian football game.

Clarence – who couldn’t play due to his failing eyesight – and Priscilla – who didn’t believe in sweating unless she was getting ice cream afterward – were the self proclaimed cheerleaders. Out on the field it was girls against boys – another reason Priscilla didn’t want to play.

Lilly threw the ball, but fell asleep before Hannah even caught it – she was narcoleptic. Hannah picked up the ball and tripped. Honestly, who wears wedge sandals to play football? Mary and Regina were in the corner of the field making snow angels.

Mark threw in for the guys. He threw the ball and it flew straight, hitting Hannah right in the face. Priscilla lost it. Clarence had to help her up off the ground as she laughed at Hannah’s misfortune.

Mrs. Whynd walked out onto the field and made an executive decision to forever end the Australian football tradition.

After Hannah was checked out by the school nurse – she was fine – and Lilly was littered off – she wasn't – Priscilla sat under a tree and looked around. The girls that weren’t sawing logs were playing a strange clapping game. Henry, Ridge, and Rodney were playing bloody knuckles. Carl and Mark were swapping contact information. Clarence was talking animatedly at Oliver.

This was going to be a good year.
