TUM Autonomous Motorsports Wins Third Annual Autonomous Challenge @ CES

The Technical University of Munich's (TUM) Autonomous Motorsport team has been crowned the winner of this year's Autonomous Challenge @ CES, a component of CES 2024, by the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), a trailblazing force in high-speed autonomy. Modern autonomous driving technology was on display at the competition, as TUM Autonomous Motorsport's racecar reached speeds of over 150 mph in spite of difficult weather. The TUM team beat University of Virginia's Cavalier Autonomous Racing, which finished in second place, in an exciting race to earn the victory.

The TUM and KAIST teams raced alongside each other during the semifinal, a first in the field, in an amazing demonstration of high-speed autonomous racing. The vehicles made history by navigating turns with just 1.5 meters between them, setting a new standard for autonomous racing.

The victory of TUM highlights important developments in autonomous technology as well as the dedication of the upcoming generation of inventors. After TUM's win, three IAC racecars—equipped with the Next Gen Autonomous Vehicle Platform (IAC AV-24)—ran on the course simultaneously, creating a historic occasion. This was the first high-speed autonomous racing event in history.

Touted as the fastest and most technologically advanced autonomous racecar, the IAC AV-24 showed off its skills under track lights before going completely dark. The racecars' AI driver algorithms allowed them to operate in complete darkness, demonstrating the ability of autonomous vehicle technology to perform well in difficult environments.
