. You know, most people don't like to be seen. They're afraid. Because you have to be comfortable with yourself. You have to stop performing. I never hide who I am.

"Woman of the Hour" a thriller directed by Anna Kendrick, is an effective look at the creepiness of a serial killer, who gets chosen for the Dating Game tv show, and gets picked for the date, by Ms. Kendrick. You might notice Autumn Best, only her 2nd movie/tv acting job, who turns in a terrific performance as one of the killer's victims. Needless to say you'll be telling the girls on the tv run, don't go with him.

Movies watched in 2024
Woman of the Hour (2023, USA)
Director: Anna Kendrick
Writer: Ian McDonald
Mini-review:
This is a surprisingly hard-hitting movie. It uses the bizarre real life story of a serial killer to put on display the different aggresions (both macro and micro) that women face on the daily, and the way many things have barely changed over the last 50 years. While I already knew Anna Kendrick was a great actress, here she also proves herself as a talented director on her first try. I can see some people being unhappy with the way she handles the most violent moments, but I think it was the right choice for this particular story and message. Beyond that, Daniel Zovatto's performance is genuinely unsettling and terrifying, which makes the whole thing work even better. So yeah, Woman of the Hour is not an easy film, but it's pretty powerful. I'll be looking forward to Anna Kendrick's future directorial works.

The very smart actress Anna Kendrick has done a very smart job directing Ian McDonald’s well-written script for WOMAN OF THE HOUR (2024, Netflix). She’s also been quite generous in keeping her part, though the female lead, only one aspect of the career of serial killer Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto) rather than turning the project into a star turn. In fact, you probably need to drop any assumptions you have about stardom to appreciate the film fully. It would be a mistake to expect her presence to be a key part of the story in narrative terms rather than part of the tapestry in its depiction of misogyny.
The film starts with one of Alcala’s murders before taking up the career of actress Sheryl Bradshaw (Kendrick). Scenes of her problems booking a job alternate with Alcala’s criminal career at various times (pay attention to the dates superimposed whenever a new chapter starts). Kendrick and Zovatto’s paths cross when her agent convinces her to appear on THE DATING GAME for the exposure, and he turns up as the most charming of the three contestants.
The misogyny of Alcala’s murders is played against the issues hampering Kendrick’s career. At the start two men for whom she auditions critique her body in front of her (most of the bad audition stories were drawn from her own experiences). Although the details of the murders stick fairly closely to the facts of the case, the DATING GAME scene is highly fictionalized to underline the film’s themes. This provides a particular showcase for Kendrick as she tries to play dumb and then rebels against the vapid questions she’s been handed, instead quizzing the contestants on their reactions to quotes from Einstein and Kant. And the show’s host has been given a fictional name to prevent any confusion between actual host Jim Lange and Tony Hale’s very funny portrait of a more egotistical, chauvinistic figure. To counterbalance the misogyny in the story, Kendrick is given surprising moments of connection with the show’s makeup and hair women (Denalda Williams and Karen Holness) and even one of the more chauvinistic contestants (Jedidiah Goodacre).
Kendrick’s direction astutely maneuvers between the horror of the murder scenes, the comic interlude of the game show and a taut suspense sequence after she mistakenly goes out for a drink with Alcala. The framing of their bar scene is especially fine. Before we’re even aware of her reaction to him, Kendrick eschews standard two shots in favor of over-the-shoulder shots and profile shots that place only one of the actors on the screen and toward the side, emphasizing the space between the two characters. She also showcases Nicolette Robinson as a woman who lost a friend to Alcala’s murder spree and the three main on-screen victims — played by Kelly Jakle, Kathryn Gallagher and Autumn Best — so that the humanity of their characters is never lost. By the time the film focuses on Best, who’s positively luminous as a resourceful runaway, you’re aching for her to get away.
