Gulabo Sitabo: Shoojit Sircar shows the wreck for cupidity in the finest way possible

Amazon Prime’s Gulabo Sitabo will make you experience the beauty of Lucknow and strong performances by the leads along with boring and slow-pacing screenplay and ineffective dialogues. Though the makers wanted the film to get a theatrical release,but during the lockdown, they decided to go with the OTT platform. Ayushmann Khurrana worked with Shoojit Sircar in his debut in Vickey Donor. On the other hand, Amitabh Bacchan paired-up with Shoojit Sircar in movies like Badla, Pink, Piku, etc. Now talking about this movie, it starts with a doll show. The name of the dolls are Gulabo and Sitabo and the show is about how they are fighting for their sake. Then the camera moved on a ragged haveli named Fatima Haveli,  which is more than 100 years old. The begum, who is the owner of the haveli married Mirza(Amitabh Bachhan) who is 17 years younger than her. There are some tenants who live in Fatima Haveli, give negligible rent to Mirza. Baankey (Ayushmann Khurrana), who is the leader of the tenants, has quarrel relation with Mirza. Mirza always wants to repulse the tenants but on the other side, Baankey wants to live there giving Mirza a very low rent or get a flat or money instead of living there. Now you have to watch the film to know how their fight turns into a tragedy for them.

Now coming to the performances, the leads are the show stellar. As usual, Ayushmann was extraordinary as Baankey, and Amitabh Bacchan delivered one of his finest performance once again. The prosthetic of Mr. Bacchan was looking quite artificial but the good news is Mr. Bacchan completely overshadowed it. The supportive characters especially Vijay Raaz and Brijendra Kala made this film worth watching. Avik Mukhopadhyay leads the cinematography. He explored Lucknow as never before, his work is appreciable in this film. But the makers didn’t try any kind of experiment what we wanted to see in this genre of film, maybe the makers wanted to give this movie a more realistic look. But still, Avik Mukhopadhyay proved why he is the 4-time national award winner. The background score is good too and matched with the situations of the films. But the screenplay is the thing where this film fails to impress the audience. Juhi Chaturvedi, who is the screenwriter of films like Piku, October, wrote a slow pacing screenplay for Gulabo Sitabo. Though the dialogues were trying to recover the concentration of the audience, but still the not so impactful and weakened dialogues can’t able to make the audience’s patience to sail through the film. The editing part could have been a bit shorter. But if you like the way Shoojit Sarkar is directing, you won’t get disappointed that much. Though the climax of the movie is amazing, it has a great message put up by its end. Final verdict: In spite of boring screenplay and defected execution, the performances by the casts and amazing message through its climax make this movie a one-time watchable.
