On this day, 7 December 1928, Avram Noam Chomsky, activist, linguist and author was born in Philadelphia. Chomsky came to prominence as an activist as an outspoken critic of the Vietnam war, for which he was arrested several times and placed on President Richard Nixon's official list of enemies. He has since become one of the world's leading critics of US foreign-policy, and one of the most cited scholars alive. Politically Chomsky usually identifies with currents including libertarian socialism and anarcho-syndicalism. Chomsky contributed a foreword to our first book, Working Class History: Everyday Acts of Resistance & Rebellion, which is available here along with some of Chomsky's other works: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/collections/all/noam-chomsky https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/2154482238070248/?type=3

Hey! I'm a huge fan of your art and have a question that I've wanted to ask for some time. In a few of your posts you have mentioned your OC Noam-- and since this is a Hebrew name which I usually only encounter in my very Jewish environment, I wanted to ask if there is any specific reason for choosing it? (Just because this is a beautiful name that usually doesn't come up much and it got me curious)
i actually decided on the name noam because of avram noam chomsky (the jewish linguist/philosopher/historian etc.) after reading some of his writing for a class! hebrew names always sound very beautiful to me as well & i believe my given name (hester) is derived from it too 🤔
tbh there are so many lovely names from all over to choose from and im really glad i came across noam..

If not, you might be surprised to hear that he is one of the most quoted scholars in history. The NY times also described him as the “top intellectual alive”.
Considering his groundbreaking theories on linguistic psychology and politics, why haven’t the majority of the American population heard of him?
The answer is simple. He goes against mainstream thought and has frequently criticized the actions of the US government and mainstream media.
As most of us consume our information through mainstream media, it’s easy to see why he isn’t as popular as he should be.
Below are some Noam Chomsky quotes:
“Debt is a trap, especially student debt, which is enormous, far larger than credit card debt. It’s a trap for the rest of your life because the laws are designed so that you can’t get out of it. If a business, say, gets in too much debt, it can declare bankruptcy, but individuals can almost never be relieved of student debt through bankruptcy.”
“The more you can increase fear of drugs, crime, welfare mothers, immigrants and aliens, the more you control all of the people.”
“Globalization is the result of powerful governments, especially that of the United States, pushing trade deals and other accords down the throats of the world’s people to make it easier for corporations and the wealthy to dominate the economies of nations around the world without having obligations to the peoples of those nations.” — Profit over People: Neoliberalism and the Global Order
“It is important to bear in mind that political campaigns are designed by the same people who sell toothpaste and cars.”
“[The US still names] military helicopter gunships after victims of genocide. Nobody bats an eyelash about that: Blackhawk. Apache. And Comanche. If the Luftwaffe named its military helicopters Jew and Gypsy, I suppose people would notice.” — Propaganda and the Public Mind: Conversations with Noam Chomsky and David Barsamian

And despite dark times, Chomsky believes that we have to face our challenges with optimism: “Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, it’s unlikely you will step up and take responsibility for making it so. If you assume that there’s no hope, you guarantee that there will be no hope. If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, there are opportunities to change things, there’s a chance you may contribute to making a better world. The choice is yours.” Yesterday, WCH was very happy to host the launch of Chomsky's new book with author James Kelman, Between Thought and Expression Lies a Lifetime: Why Ideas Matter.
