"WASHI OF SAKURA"

Projecting the memory of Cherry blossoms into washi paper. For Japanese people, the four seasons are respected and celebrated with Springtime’s Sakura (cherry blossoms) an inseparable part of their lives. However, I realised people respond differently to this seasonal icon; some may feel happy, some sad while others experience other deep emotions towards the blossoms. Within this artwork, the washi essentially draws the viewer in, invites them to slowdown and then contemplate the work as if they are experiencing Springtime Sakura itself.

桜の記憶を和紙に投影する。記憶の中の過去の桜。

四季を楽しむ心を潜在的に持つ日本人にとって、桜という木は切っても切れない存在だが、それは人によって感じ方が違うのだと気付いた。心が華やぐ人もいれば、別れや切なさを感じたりと、桜に対して様々な感情を人々は観ているのだと。しかし、やはり桜は純粋に「綺麗だ」と心が浄化される特別な木なのではないかとも思う。

自然から成る“和紙”と“藍染”の素材の魅力を引き立たせつつ... 一枚ずつ、それぞれの場所で、個々に想い耽け・まるで花見をしているかの様な気分を味わうことのできる空間を演出する。

My Zelda x Mucha inspired lino print ♡ designed, carved and handprinted by me. Using vegan oil based inks on Japanese masa paper from the awagami factory.

Testing out new papers from Awagami Factory. The first one with the girl in water is hakuho paper and the second one with all the pink flowers is bamboo paper.

I'm not used to how watercolor behaves in Awagami's papers because it tends to bleed all over the place and blending is a nightmare, but it has a children's book effect that I find charming. I just need to figure out how to make it work.

Hakuho is 220gsm, 45% kozo (mulberry) and 55% cotton; whereas the bamboo paper is 250gsm, 70% bamboo and 30% recycled washi. Both are postcard size (6" x 4"), painted with watercolors.

Has anyone else tried these papers? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
