🌕 DESIGN: Yuwa Gladia, face concept 1

[NO SPOILERS]

"Hark: I come to thee in peace, I assure thee. To answer thy question, which I know layeth upon thy lips this moment: it is because I have every reason to believe thou'rt special. Thee, myself, little Kaname. Even thy Senju."

our second-to-last girl has arrived in the form of the Poet Wonder Yuwa (癒和) Gladia!

Yuwa comes from a clan in which each member spends half of their life in a "Sun Phase," warlike and soldierly, and half of their life in a pacifistic "Moon Phase." Yuwa is the youngest to have completed the "twelve labors" required to enter her Moon Phase, and so she is now a peaceful, spiritual creative.

(this means she was so violent and effective as a warrior that she had a downright monstrous kill count by age 18. but the clan's elders wipe your memory between Phases, so it's not like she remembers, or even cares. this cultural phenomenon is well-known.)

i wanted her to look mildly beatific, but mostly at ease. her aura is one of comfort and curiosity. nothing about her face belies her past except for the brand on her left eye (well: her left, our right) that tells the world of her new beginning. her dream is to write an epic based on the history of the old Hope's Peak Academy.

"Bwuh? It’s Christmas again? Um, I mean, the Very Eternal Birthday of the Empress Ryoko Otonashi. Or was it the Birthday of the Very Eternal Empress Ryoko Otonashi…? I always try to make a calendar of these things…but then I forget where I put the calendar…and also I can’t write... Awawawa—wait! No time to mosey about thinking stormy thoughts! The students need their presents…! Pip pip cheerio…!"

Something foul and evil and classified as an infectious disease— Oh…it’s from Usami. That’s…better? … …this will be nice when it gets warmer out. The coat I’m wearing right now—you know…the monks, Usami, they’ve told me that I patched and sewed a lot of it myself, but they’re just making fun of me. I know they’re just making fun of me. I can’t hold anything in my skull, but I’d remember if I had that kind of skill—and everyone always has to make fun of me. This place is a frigging circus and I’m the star of the freak show. playing the rain code introductions rn. did you by any chance get inspiration for the character's names in this fangan from that game. just asking/lh

ha! absolutely. Kodaka picked out a few of the Rain Code names for a "stateless" feel, i.e. the vibe that these characters could be from anywhere, or nowhere. and indeed, he's said in Bsky Q&As that characters like, for example, Fubuki or Aphex come from far-away mystery cultures. i've always liked Fubuki's name in particular: Japanese + fantasy English. Fubuki Clockford. absolutely stellar.

similarly, in the world of AWD, a lot of state lines don't matter anymore, and cultures have mixed and merged and changed. other characters were born so poor they never had real last names at all. while many of the names i've chosen may change, they still reflect that idea.

for example:

as mentioned, Six's first name is literally the English word "six." in-universe, it's just spelled out in katakana: シックス Shikkusu. her name in-universe is not 六 Roku or anything similar. her siblings all have names like Four, Five, etc too. but her last name is in fact 篠田, Shinoda.

similarly, Wisteria Ito is literally the English word wisteria (don't ask me for katakana on that, i need to sit with an expert on that one if i keep it. obnoxious) + the Japanese family name 居藤. fun fact, though: 藤 here actually means "wisteria" so her name is basically something like Wisteria Wisteria. this is intentional because i think it's funny. in-universe, i do believe Wisteria is not her real name and she came up for it herself based on her...escapades. but any future fanfic can do what it wants

Latin names are popular in AWD's time, so you end up with something like Veritas Yobiyama. again, his name is actually Veritas (something like ブリタス Buritasu but don't quote me on that, i have to tweak it with my manager's help if i end up keeping that name) and not a Japanese name with a similar meaning.

Yuwa has the opposite kind of name as Veritas: Yuwa Gladia. 癒和 (Yuwa) + gladia, from gladius, a type of Roman sword

Melville comes from someplace that is not Japanese-based at all, so his name is Melville Poine.

of course, you still have full-on Japanese names like Kaname Yoshida (由多 奏雨), Hikari Seki (関 七色), or Yaeko Togami (十神 矢枝子).

many characters come from poorer backgrounds, and so decided on their own surnames when they came to the Monastery, like Fubu Fuselage or Reika Boulevard (she took one look at her street of birth and was like yeah sure)

Senju is special in that she always called herself Senju the Excellent, and when it came time to fill out paperwork as a little kid, Suzuran just wrote down Senju Excellence for her before Senju could read or write. she would answer to both

and of course, there's Suzuran. her birth name was not Suzuran Dustcrawl. Usami (probably) gave her Suzuran (涼蘭) when she came to live at the Monastery as an infant. Dustcrawl is a half-insult referring to her status as Monastery librarian, but she's so used to people calling her that, she's just accepted it as a "family" name.

bonus: all names can be read in a Western (first + surname) or Japanese (surname + first) style. both would be considered normal in the Empress's country

can you believe we're almost done introducing the Beta Profiles of our student characters? just a handful to go! and today, we have...

...🌕 the Poet Wonder!

an ex-warrior from a far-off spiritual clan where it is tradition to spend one "Sun Phase" of your life as a holy soldier and the other "Moon Phase" as a pacifist. this Poet Wonder was so good at killing that she exited her Sun Phase before the age of 18. now she is a gentle creative and unusually sociable, though peaceful to a fault—by the laws of her clan and her gods, she will not intervene violently even when innocent lives are at stake. 

design-wise:

one of my "firstborns." in fact, the Poet Wonder may be the firstborn, next to Kaname. i conceptualized and fleshed them out before we even had a setting or a fully-fledged protagonist.

(we were totes always going to have a Poet Wonder, because that's my academic background.)

she's going to be our game's Big Person! every Danganronpa needs one.

likely beta name: Yuwa (癒和) Gladia. she originally was going to be beta-named Shiori (詩織) but i decided we had too many potential S names going on. i still love "Shiori," though. i'll have to save it for another time...

alongside Kaname, Suzuran, and our Speed Wonder, she's one character with a divine device. hers replaces an arm lost in battle.

in-universe:

her birthday is Sept 30th, making her a Libra!

her blood type is A!

likes: nature

dislikes: non-believers

in my design document, her keywords are GENTLE, SPIRITUAL, and NAIVE.

mildly Shakespearean mode of speaking: thees, thous, thys.

her clan "shades" the minds of Moon Phase folk, so our Poet Wonder doesn't recall much of her time as a soldier. or perhaps those memories are only suppressed...

I'm reading up on Yuwa, and the brand on her face looks painful as hell (I suppose ALL brands are, but right over the eye?? Damn that had to hurt) so, was she conscious or awake when it was given to her? And was getting that brand the last of her mandated "twelve labors?"

Also, Teisuke's mask gives him significant Cutie Patootie Energy; if he were to receive a very gentle boop on the snoot how would he take it

OBLIGATORY VERITAS QUESTION: do you have any dialogue from him you'd be cool with sharing — even just conceptual stuff that's absolutely not making it into the final game? I'm trying to figure oul the cadence of his speech, so I can internally put that man into situations of varying silliness, but with only like three snippets to work with, l'm coming up a bit blank lol

yes and yes! the brand is the only thing she recalls from that part of her life, which is normal for those in her clan who finish their Sun Phase and "shadow" themselves.

i have a new tidbit i just posted, but other than that i don't have much i'm comfortable sharing quite yet. nonetheless i can give some pointers:

the obvious one: he'll start yelling at the drop of a dime, but also will stop at the drop of the same dime

when he does stop yelling, he often self-soothes by saying "serenity now" or counting down from 10 or chanting "namu myōhō renge kyō"

he cusses up a storm (and, sadly, is not averse to using gendered insults. however, if fanon wants to remove that, then by all means)

if he threatens violence on you, it's usually so comical it's hard to even take seriously ("I'LL FUCKIN POISON EVERY LAST GRAIN IN YOUR MULTIGRAIN GOD DAMNED CEREAL, BITCH. I'LL FUCKIN DO IT")

he does not seem to want to admit he ever lost his cool and will gaslight you about it. master projector

he often gets defensive and assumes people are accusing him of lying

he likes to quote percentages, numbers, dates a lot. he is known for quantifying insane things that have never been quantified before. he quite literally made parties a science

he uses first names if he's comfortable with you, "man" or "dude" (gender-neutral) in general

if you can keep up with him and dodge all his extremely loud attempts at putting up a wall, you can have a pretty normal conversation with him. of our cast he is, when calm, one of the few who speaks closest to something you'd hear in real life

he likes money. things are very transactional for him. ha

every character has at least one specific verbal tic, but sometimes many. i wanted to ensure their dialogue felt dynamic and that you could parse out who was talking even if you couldn't see them. maybe in a few weeks i'll talk more about this specifically and do a little post on everyone!

1. Which character is the tallest? Which is the shortest?

this is extremely tentative as the design process is still ongoing, but at the moment Yuwa is our tallest character, while Fubu is our shortest.

2. Which character is the womanizer?

Wisteria could seduce the bark off a tree. Six used to be a womanizer, which is a story in itself. Senju is a tease, though that's not quite the same thing: she's definitely monogamous at heart. and Reika...um, gets all her wisdom from an ancient (c. 2014) PUA book. so there's the spectrum. enjoy

3. Which character looks physically weak, but is surprisingly strong?

Izumo is a seemingly delusional shortstack who's been on the run most of her life and plays with works with dead bodies, so while it's not unusual that she's tough, it is strange that she could toss the gigantic Yuwa over her head if she wanted to do so. she calls this "princess strength." it comes from "fairy dust" and "the royal guns." to be frank, most folks just assume she huffs formaldehyde like bath salts until she becomes Florida Man mighty. the truth is both more and less strange, if you can believe it...but that's a revelation another day, no?

1. Which characters would get good grades?

Reika, despite being the warlord (lady?) of a post-apocalyptic biker gang, is surprisingly responsible, if absent-minded. Yuwa is a slow but steady learner. Veritas would probably explode his heart with uppers if it meant staying up long enough to study and beat everyone out on an exam.

2. Which characters have disabilities?

i hesitate to answer "Identity" questions about AWD, because i like to leave things up to fan interpretation. but! as a disabled person myself, this one is important to me. and the answer is...

it depends on what you mean by disability, because most people in AWD are casually disabled: this is a post-apocalyptic world with many half-fatal things and not a lot of consistent medical care. (and just so many weirdos who get themselves fucked up. so, so many.)

nonetheless, it's not a big deal, and unremarkable unless the disabled person in question has a divine device. in the world of AWD, you probably know quite a handful of blind or mute or limbless folks, and everyone has multiple mysteriously sickly siblings or cousins.

so! we'll stick with the visible or obvious ones, or disabilities you'd notice in the modern world:

Wisteria is constantly bleeding from the mouth or nose, as well as hiccuping, coughing, and vomiting at random intervals. she will flat-out tell you she is dying, but does not elaborate.

you, reader, might consider Fubu's "gremlins" after his military service accident something like a disability. in-universe, others might assume he really sees them. does the truth matter?

Senju has a divine device in the form of cyborg legs created from an old vending machine. she was a paraplegic after an injury as a kid, but her neighborhood pooled money to replace her legs, which is a very rare, very unusual occurrence, esp considering they're all poor down there. she's something like a local hero, though

Yuwa has a divine device in the form of a cyborg arm, as she lost the flesh one in war

Suzuran, according to Usami, had brain damage after a childhood fever, though the monks at the Monastery say Usami actually dropped her on her head as a baby. her divine device, attached to her ear, just barely soothes her insomnia and keeps her memories intact, but she has wide gaps of pure loss whenever she thinks back on her life. her insomnia and forgetfulness also get worse when she tries to leave the Monastery...

Kaname's divine device is attached to her jaw and replaces it, though it is not immediately obvious why she has it.

in her view, that's someone else committing the violence: she just pressed a button that could mean anything. one forced onto a jury where the Death Sentence is in question (she tells Suzuran) cannot be helped. she could kill herself to avoid it, but that would be the ultimate act of violence, no?

i suppose you could call it Hypocrisy, or just a Coping Mechanism of SHSL Mental Gymnastics. or maybe she's right. up to you.

every week, i'll answer 2-5 questions about the student characters in A WONDERFUL DANGANRONPA, generally taken from various "OC quizzes" etc. (you can also send asks!) this is one way to get to know the characters while the visual design process takes place.

(note: these questions will focus mostly on the student characters, because throwing Usami and other figures into the mix makes things complex fast.)

1. Which character is most likely to get kidnapped?

Yaeko has been kidnapped, multiple times. as a Togami, it's old hat for her. she's generally released not because the Togami Congomerate pulls up the money to break her out, but because she's taught herself to shoot off her crossbow with her "particulars." that's according to her, by the way. i don't know what that means and neither should you. i think she's probably just Too Annoying to ransom for long.

2. Which character has the biggest family?

in terms of immediate siblings, Six is...well, the sixth of thirteen. the runner up is Yaeko, as the seventh and final daughter of a seventh and final son.

3. Which character eats the least? The most?

Veritas overeats until he forgets to breathe and passes out like Gram-Gram at Thanksgiving and you have to wipe the turkey off his precious, angry little unconscious face. good night sweet prince.

Kaname eats the least: in fact, no one's seen her eat at all, and she dislikes doing it. many assume she pulls the "Trick of Saint Shinguji" with which she can presumably slight-of-hand a meat bun or something past her divine device. others (like Senju) figure she's been touched by the gods and no longer requires sustenance at all. only Yuwa's gotten close enough to her to know the truth.

4. Which non-related characters have known each other the longest?

Senju and Suzuran are childhood friends. while Senju may live a day's run from the Monastery way down at the bottom of the mountain, she's stayed with Suzuran often over the years. Suzie even has a place in her dorm for Senju to sleep (stuffed into a hope chest at the end of the bed) though Senju usually elects to just flop next to her instead. this leads to a lot of cold-ass robo-legs against the back of Suzie's in the middle of the night. the future is metallic goosing

5. Which character is the "dad friend"?

Teisuke will make sure you're fed whether you like it or not. now put on the protective earmuffs so the blast don't getcha

an ex-warrior from a far-off spiritual clan where it is tradition to spend one "Sun Phase" of your life as a holy soldier and the other "Moon Phase" as a pacifist. this Poet Wonder was so good at killing that she exited her Sun Phase before the age of 18. now she is a gentle creative and unusually sociable, though peaceful to a fault—by the laws of her clan and her gods, she will not intervene violently even when innocent lives are at stake. 

design-wise:

one of my "firstborns." in fact, the Poet Wonder may be the firstborn, next to Kaname. i conceptualized and fleshed them out before we even had a setting or a fully-fledged protagonist.

(we were totes always going to have a Poet Wonder, because that's my academic background.)

she's going to be our game's Big Person! every Danganronpa needs one.

likely beta name: Yuwa (癒和) Gladia. she originally was going to be beta-named Shiori (詩織) but i decided we had too many potential S names going on. i still love "Shiori," though. i'll have to save it for another time...

alongside Kaname, Suzuran, and our Speed Wonder, she's one character with a divine device. hers replaces an arm lost in battle.
