i think part of the reason emily is so determined to show garrus the right way to go about things is because she was a lot like him when she first joined the alliance, she hated all the rules, she hated not being able to just go after whoever the fuck she wanted (coughbatarianslavers/mercscoughhackwheeze)  bc she was so angry bc anger is much easier to deal with than sadness and grief and pain

luckily she had a good co (and a good mentor in anderson) who helped her work through everything (well sort of, she still straight-up refuses to show mercy to slavers, but she doesn't risk herself and her squad to go after them anymore)

so when she meets garrus she realizes how alike they are very quickly

and she hopes she did half a good a job mentoring him as that co and anderson did with her
